      Can't stand those belt clips. I've been trying out those spider tool holsters from Amazon for a few weeks now and I'm a big fan already. Easier to clip than the included belt clips, and no accidental drops.

    I was approaching a stop light when it turned green and a pick-up truck in front of me took off. I heard a thump and stopped to find a bruised DeWalt 885. Picked it up, hit the trigger and it purred like a cat. That was 4 years ago and it has been used regularly and it still is working great. I love the DeWalt 885.

      The cheapo DeWalt tools are garbage, it's immediately obvious if you use the both of them. I have, it's night and day. XR is always a solid option for any task while the brushed shit seems worse than the cheap brushed ryobis or at least about the same

      I think this seems kind of biased too. The 885 is basically the equivalent of The black and decker version of the same tool. Also know that wouldn’t surprise me if they pre-drilled holes 885’s side. You pre-drilled a hole even if it’s small enough on the fastener to make it look like you’re not cheating it’s still going to go through faster than it should.

    DCF887 Brushless all the way! $10 is well worth the extra battery life I get from my 887 over my old 885. The brushless motor is way more battery saving than the brushed 885. I’ve done multiple tests my self running 4” deck screws all day at work and I can easily run 100+ more with the 887 vs the 885 with the same 4 or 5AH batteries. It’s a life saver if your up on a ladder and not needing to come down to swap batteries. Plus the 3 mode switch is great on the 887. Just my opinion.

    • @ImaITman
      @ImaITman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's it Gino, brushless gives you longer run times due to needing less energy to do a similar amount of work. Also the 887 (barring any engineering issues) should last longer than an 885. Really though as a pro are you going to wear the tools out before youre ready to upgrade, some do, some don't.

    How do you know, HOW MUCH DOWNWARD FORCE IS BEING PUT ON THE DRILLS, AND, HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT THE DOWNWARD FORCE IS THE EXACT SAME ON EACH DRILL. Doing these tests that you did, the way that you did them, you can not know the answer to the two critical questions. You guys are probably excellent carpenters, but, terrible scientific testers. Please stick to what you know how to do best, which is obviously carpentry, not, scientific testing. Thank you guys.

    I have an 885 that was built in 2013. I probably bought it in 2014. I've never had an issue with it. I actually didn't even use it for years and years because I didn't even understand what impact drivers were and I thought this impact driver was too powerful for my applications so I just used the drill that came in the combo kit instead of the impact. I thought the impact was for driving nuts or something like with need for an extreme amount of RPM and torque. Then I got educated and experienced. I've never had a problem with it and I've used it at home and professionally.

    I was going to get the 887 bare tool for about $130, but came across a sale for the 885 "kit" with the driver, the battery, a bag and an bit kit for $90 shipped. I jumped on that 885. I was just going to use it for home use, not heavy construction like I used to.

  • @ricardocalderon9823
    @ricardocalderon9823 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I have the DCF 885 and its actually really good. When I bought it at the time, there was a dewalt rep at that home depot and he told me the only difference between these two models is the brushless motor technology. The brushless motor creates no sparks and is perfect for work environments that are around combustible materials or fumes. As you can see it held up itself pretty well. The different speeds is really just a gimmick for people that can't finesse a variable trigger.

  • @tsizzle

    Yo, waiting for DeWalt to release a DCF987 to fix the issues with the 887. Even still, Milwaukee M18 Fuel Impact has a bad collet. For most DIYers would you go with a 887 or a bad collet M18 Fuel impact? I do like the 3 LEDs from the DeWalt impacts though.

    I'm admittedly a huge Milwaukee nutswinger... but I have to admit that my very first cordless impact tool was a DeWalt 885, probably 7 or 8 years ago, and I still use it very frequently to this day. It has been super reliable and performs great. When it kicks the bucket, I will replace it with a Milwaukee only because the 885 is my only tool on a non-Milwaukee battery platform. I'm assuming Milwaukee will fix the collet issue in the Gen4 whenever it comes out.

      My stepbrother has the 887 I have the 885. 887 is a bit lighter and slightly more powerful but in use this power is hardly felt or even noticed. Half the time the 885 gets it done faster. How you use the tool had a much bigger impact *ba dum tiss* on the performance. The 887 has less weight density so it feels lighter in the hand although the weight difference is not that much in reality.

    You didn't talk about the 3-speed gear box on the 887 and that's the real distinction IMHO. That gives more fine control at slow speed. I have the 885 and I like it fine. I don't care if it's 2 seconds faster or slower than the 887. I think I'd appreciate the fine tuning the 887's gear box affords but not enough to throw my 885 overboard.

      @Jack Braddell It is true that with a big crew $60,- is a lot. Even a $10,- difference could end up being a big saving. But if a big crew can keep on working longer without needing to come down from the roof to switch batteries as much, you have that earned back in a month or 2. Besides, if you buy in bulk you get a good discount and therefor the price would be better. That makes the difference smaller in total.

    While it is single speed you have a proven no fuss small impact driver. The 887 is a little more tame in mode 1 and has less tendancy to over drive small screws too deep. If you forget that the 887 has the mode selector ( or someone else picks it to to use) it can either over perform or underperform depending on what sppeed it is in.

    Thanks Vince. I would go brushed. Because a brushed tool is quicker and easier to repair. Brushless is all wired to its circuit board, So when the board blows that's the end of your tool. Stay brushed for sure.

      @duncdunc76 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im also curious how ya like the atomic impact? I added a couple of the Atomic drill drivers to the work force a month ago because we were doing some gazebo and pergola display builds at Sams Clubs during open hours and I wanted to try a drill driver for its quieter operation, and it had sufficient torque while being much quieter then my 885 impacts. They actually worked pretty well as long as you were careful about the torque twist. And I really like how compact they are. One of my guys actually said he prefers using the drill driver over the impact. I dont agree with him on that personally, but when ya need a quiet driver it is much quieter then the impact. Haven't needed to upgrade my 885s yet still going strong and plenty of power for the building we do.

      @@duncdunc76 I tend to always carry my hammerdrill with me, I like it for drilling and my impact for fastening. Easier for me to just switch tools then changing out bits but that's just my preference. If I'm just working on delicate work or electric I have sweats gyro screwdriver. But I don't have anything bad to say about the atomic but if your 885's are still running strong then I wouldn't bother.

    Been running an 885 for the past 3 years. Absolutely flawless. I also dropped it from the top of a 12' ladder last year. It fell onto a cement floor, striking the rear of rubberized part of the motor causing the rubber to deform a little. I figured it was a gonner, but it has never skipped a beat. It's like it never fell.
    Great video guys!

    Thing is brushed motors are more powerful than brushless. What you get with brushless is technically the endurance per battery should be better AND the tool motor should last longer due to less mechanical wear and tear. So the performance isn't really hugely different, but longetivty of the tool IS a factor and it's really hard to test for that.

    Great video - made me laugh but learned at the same time. Will be checking this channel out often.
    I started a crew last year with 887’s we work outside so they get exposed to all elements. The 887 hasn’t been as reliable as i would have liked compared to the 18v impacts we were running. Specifically with the LEDs shorting our and Speed 2 being intermittent. Speed 3 always seems to work. Enter 787. Almost identical specs as 887 Speed 2 little more simple design. And easier on the wallet. Bought a couple of those and will see how they last. Thanks again for funny but serious review!

Seems to me with all the bells and whistles the 887 is dragging a lil bit, or is the 885 a more stout perfomer for not havn the b&w? Either way I guess it comes down to how feels in tne hand and how deep your pockets go.

Can't wait to try them out. Mine also does not have a battery level on it. CHEAPER Model. The 3 speed one is faster. Mine Does Not Say Made In the U S of A . Larry Darryl and Darryl comparing tools. Dollar for Dollar Dewalt makes some of the best CORDED tools but when it comes to getting the best Brushless tools NOTHING, Nothing beats the Milwaukee Fuel M12, M18 PERIOD. Coming in a very close second and a little less expensive are the Makita 12v & 18v BL line. That statement has been proven many times in real world job sites and garages, most recently when the cable installer was trying to drill through a poured concrete column with his new Dewalt XR 20v Max Hammer Drill and was struggling big time, told him to hold on and I'll get you a real drill. Came back with my 3 year old Makita 18v BL Hammer Drill took the bit out of the Dewalt and punched through the remaining 6 inches faster than it took him with his Dewalt, wish you could have seen the look on his face oh and btw my Makita had some No Name 4.0 mh battery in it, pretty sure that cable guy returned his Dewalt and bought the Makita. My Milwaukee Fuel drills, impact drivers and wrenches are even better.

    I do prefer brushless but after really thinking it over, brush powered motors have been getting it done since the dawn of electric motors. I have not personally noticed much of a difference “performance wise” or overall durability longevity etc. I own both brush and brushless models and I will honestly say the brushed tools are still working with no issues whatsoever. I will agree that brushless is more a gimmick than anything else.. To this day, I would still put some of my antique corded drills VS any battery powered drill in any race or power test there is. I have some older Montgomery Ward, Craftsman, Black and Decker etc that were all originally made in USA that still work like a dream! Older is better PERIOD!

    Wood can have different structure even in 10 cm area. i am pretty sure you know that because you guys working with wood every day.
    Sometimes people use different piece of wood as well for test. If you dont believe me, test it. Take a 2x4 cut them 5 exact same pieces then put them on a measure. You will get different results. Not much, but still. Then take 5 different 2x5 from 5 different dealer or lumberyard and measure them by weight. You will surprise by the result. Age, location, branch, altitude, humidity level, grain structure can affect hardness, stiffness and so on, which also affects your tool. Sometimes the nail/screw goes in it like into butter, and another them you say "whoa... Whats this?"

I know yall dont do much reviews on pneumatic nailers and I'm guessing its because obviously they're trusty, but like nick I'm a DeWalt diehard guy. But I'd like yalls input on pneumatic tools for all day use trim tools, miter saws, all the works for trim carpenters! Yalls suggestion maybe a trim carpenter specific episode or series of videos to help better my work in the industry. Thanks @VCG !!
