Was helping build a house today and literally had an issue with the M18 Fuel quick release collet someone else brought. I gotta say, despite being an old underdog, my DeWalt 885 has been great and the quick insert collet has no issues. :D
Yes! I'm also a proud owner of an 885 and that impact has served me well for a long time. It's ran thousands of fasteners and never gave me any trouble. She'll get hot enough to cook an egg at times but never developed a smoking problem 😂
My Makita impact had trigger capability of running marine-grade stainless fasteners flawlessly. Survived multiple hurricanes. Worked for years and years in a saltwater environment. Dealt with extreme temperatures sand and dirt on a daily basis. Makita for Life 🤓
I’ve been on the Makita platform for 10 years as an HVAC professional. And the new Makita XDT16 is by far the best I’ve ever used. The many options on it help to keep me from stripping screws. I don’t need the most powerful, the xdt16 is by far more than enough. Awesome product.
I'm with you, Makita has the best power to weight ratio. They're usually lighter for the power and a smaller head to get in spaces. They're longevity and durability are awesome as well. When crawling in an attic and the drill falls and hits drywall your happy for the smaller size
i have a makita and i do drywall and when i use my impact goes right through the drywall use it for heavy Gauge only but i have drop my impact 6ft+ a couple times there good tools and battery are cheaper than Milwaukee
@@chrisx5127Nope,they are all made in china. I have a cordless 18v makita drill, hammer drill, impact, angle grinder and a small vacuum and they are all made in china. And i have some 220v grinders,a big 220v vacuum and they are also made in china. Best tools you can buy to use and abuse every day in my opinion. And 90% of people i see on construction sites use makita tools,no one even bothers with DeWalt or Milwaukee. The other 10% use Bosch.
I've been through Hitachi and Milwaukee.. both had big issues more with the drill. I'm running Makita and I've put it through hell! It's full of concrete and I can barely twist the drill setting. Still running perfect! The impact driver is by far the most comfortable to use out of those 3 brands I've had experience with.
Makita used to be amazing when they were made in Japan, now they are in China and going downhill fast thats why your seeing less and less in the trades.
Awesome review, I am also a Makita fan myself, that impact driver you talk about did not ever let me down when I used it during deployment in the Middle East, it outshined all the others on our construction job site in a combat environment where weather and other factors played a major part, it performed flawlessly!
Straight and to the point. Milwaukee, are you listening? From this video forward people are going to be reconsidering their purchases/platforms. Man up and address the problem before you lose anymore customers. Had I seen this I would of purchased the Makita.
I'll take the Makita every time. They have been doing cordless longer then any other brand and I have never retired a Makita cordless because it broke. Matter of fact I can probably find most of them still in my shed in working order but I doubt the batteries would hold a charge any more. I recently picked up Makita's brushless 1/2" drill and driver combo to replace the ones I've been using professionally for the last 10 years without a flaw and I was wholly impressed. The drill has some real heft to it and can output some real wrist breaking torque and is likely why it came with a side handle. The impact driver is the best I have ever used and I suspect it will be just as capable 10 years from now. With the 5 amp hour batteries I can go several days some times before having to put them on the charger and I'm building decks. The programmable speed settings on the driver comes in handy because the max setting can be a little much on some work. The LED lights on both are great too. Anyone using these types of tools on a day to day will eventually drop them and we all want to them to survive the impact and I can attests that the Makita's that I have owned have taken dives off second story roof tops to concrete and survived. With my latest purchase I have only one complaint and that is the soft case that it comes with, (AKA: A bag), is to small to fit everything. There is no way to fit the side handle for the drill in the case no matter what angle or direction I may try. The case is to small. I don't even bother trying to zipper it up. Give me a hard case for my tools.
Vince, Your video also helped a lot of people (Home Owners, Contractors, DIY, New & Older Carpenter) on picking which tools to invest their money into. Thank You
I feel left out. I purchased the M18 gen3 impact when it came out. Im a commercial sheet metal worker and use this impact everyday. Self tapping screws, concrete anchors, and drilling with a uni bit are what I use it the most for. I’ve never had this issue...
Hi Vince l love your tool testing.. I lost my right hand in a job accident. I look at all of your tool testing videos and they have helped me make well informed decisions about with my tool selection keep up the good work...
He’s brought this up many times in multiple videos and to multiple people at Milwaukee. I’m sure he’s frustrated from the response of them doing nothing so he made this video.(I would’ve done the same) he is one of Milwaukee’s best sales rep out there that doesn’t work for them. He reaches millions of people at the click of a button. They need to fix their product and if not I’m glad he’s telling us to switch to makita for the better tool.
@@Yeabuddy720 I started out with Makita and the batteries just don’t last long enough. Now all of my tools are Milwaukee and I have some Dewalt but Milwaukee is by far the best I’ve ever had. Never had any problems with the Collet. I use them all day almost every day.
Im a canadian redseal I.S.M using my 2 dewalt 885s for 7 years and my 2 887s for 3 years , in winnipeg in -40 C to + 40 C the 885s have both been dropped from scissor lifts 30+ feet onto concrete and still run fine , the 887s have taken baker scaffold drops , a new shaft later , they run in all conditions ( -30 C being my limit) and have never failed me . i do like makita triggers more . but out here my dewalts are bullet proof , and apprentice proof. love the videos , thanks for making them.
My 888 has lasted for years based on your recommendation of not using it as a drill, if I have more than two holes to drill I will get one of my drills. I am grateful for your insights and advice. Thank you Vince (crew)!
I bought my first Makita impact drill 8 or 9 years ago and use it every day, all day long . It's still working great although I've gone through several batteries. Makita had a real battery longevity issues with their early LI Ion batteries but the new designs seem to hold up well. I've dropped all my drills multiple time onto hard surfaces from one and two story scaffolding and they have always survived.I just can't seem to kill them. I used Dewalt for years but every one I owned failed due to some switch problem. I see a lot of tradesman with the Milwakees so I know their a great drill, and I think it comes down to these two. Naturally you tend to get locked into a brand of cordless tools once you start buying the more expensive higher amperage batteries. I've found Makita makes a line of cordless tools that are durable and long lasting so I've stuck with them, but truthfully I'm not knocking any other contactor grade brands because I've just stuck with the brand that treats me well.I'm 68 and when I was younger I remember the first cordless drills and I said what a joke ; I just never thought they'd make a significant "impact" on most jobs. Was I wrong.I bought the Makita cordless impact wrench and I can take all the wheels off both my trucks and reinstall with a fully charged 5 amp battery. Amazing.
Vince @vcgconstruction your videos were the catalyst for my first power tool purchase. I went with the Makita Driver over a year ago because of your tests and it’s been nothing but a joy. I love the platform, but I’m smart enough to know that I’m allowed to have other tools too. I keep some Milwaukee and Ryobi, because I like them. They get the job done, they work for my applications, they’re consistent and reliable, and I like them. Your channel is a respected buyers guide for homeowners, subcontractors, and tradesmen. We appreciate your years of service and love supporting you!!
Just what I wanted to hear. I have been shopping the Makita tools to replace all my DeWalt. However, I was torn between Milwaukee and Makita. Makita was leading only because my favorite color is Teal green. Now I have an actual reason to go ahead and switch my tool collection over to Makita. Thanks for the video.
I have two battery platforms Dewalt and Makita, I take only the best tools from these brands. Thank you very much to your channel for telling the whole truth about tools and warning against unnecessary purchases.
I started plumbing 9 years ago. I did some research and decided early on I was gonna choose mikita even though most plumbers either use the yellow or the red brand. Countless job later and 9 years my compact saw all went to heaven last week and today so did my impact. I use it mostly to drill holes with a paddle bit to reroute water and gas lines so this review is perfect for me. I'm really hard on my tools so it's nice not having to buy new tools every other year.
Am on the m18 platform but i agree with you about makita its the best one of impact drivers. I want to say thank you for professional performance of your tool testing and revieving!
Ive got a Makita Impact. Its awesome. Its not the one in this vid, its a step down, but it's still brushless and has the variable speed trigger AND I picked it up WITH a 3 amp hour battery for 80 bucks, thats a bargain.
I've got a Makita 12 volt and that thing kicks ass, even on big lag screws. I love Makita, De Walt and Milwaukee and have all three platforms. They're all good depending on the tool. Some are way better than others.
Thanks Vince from a common DIY/newbie in the power tool world who wants to “experience “ your world for a brief time I appreciate your honesty on the tools you show on your channel. I learn a lot from your channel and from your buddies..”let’s go baby...😊”..it has help me make decisions I would not have known without your help and other tool reviewers. Thanks again..👍👍
Being a fan of kobalt. Im just happy they are up there with the big guys. Everyone i work with loves dewalt. I always thought they were over priced for the quality. Whenever they would use my kobalt tools they would be impressed. I also ran a 12v milwaukee line. Kept a 12v impact and 12v wratchet in my tool bag at all times.
Kobalt has def stepped up their game. I have a couple of their tools. I brag about them any chance I get. I was actually surprised how well they function, and also their durability.
Huge Makita guy here, love my tools, never owned the Milwakee. That said, my impact driver has issues with collet retention too after 3 years of moderate to light use.
I was going to purchase the Milwaukee gen 3 Fuel impact driver, but thanks to Vince's several videos demonstrating the shortcomings of the faulty collet and Milwaukee's disinterest in addressing this issue that has been known for several years, I went in a different direction. Thank you Vince for holding Milwaukee accountable.
Dave have a real world question. I live in a condo and do not have a compressor. can these drivers remove the tires off my car with their torque?? could really use a way to do stuff on my car sometimes?
@@tcseacliff for car work I would go with the impact wrench instead of these impact drivers. I use the m12 3/8 drive for work and it has a lot of torque. I paired it with the 3/8 drive ratchet.
@@tcseacliff in a pinch, yes some impact drivers can get lugs off a wheel, but like someone else already said.... best to use the tool that's really meant for the job
Am a joiner from Edinburgh Scotland and bought the makita one cause of your review. It brilliant, never had any issues and it runs like a dream. Cheers bud.
Thanks for this vcg. The bickering over brands is stupid. I run dewalts cause I'm on the batteries but you helped me avoid the 887 which potentially saved me money and time. You guys aren't shilling a brand just giving us information to help us. Have a good holiday season
The 886 is the last good impact they made. I sold mine in 2016 to get the xdt12 and last year I traded my xdt13 for an 886. The 887 is complete garbage that I ended up putting in the trash. Bought several of them and had issues with all of them.
I started on Milwaukee’s platform from watching you. Then I jumped on makita when they had those killer saw deals recently. Then I found myself picking up the xtd16 and I have the gen 3 impact and m12 fuel impacts but when I need an impact I grab my makita xtd16 every time. If I ever have to drill lag after lag then I might grab gen 3 but you can control the makita and use different settings for whatever your drilling. It is definitely the best impact on the market
I've had Makita's phatty XPH07Z brushless hammer drill for 2 years. It was a monster but it's getting weaker. Found myself often reaching for a Ryobi impact driver because it's so much lighter. No where near the quality or power of Makita, but different tools fit in different situations. My neighbor has Milwaukee tools and they're honestly impressive and affordable considering long term battery costs and tool sales.
Iloveapplefritters, you obviously aren’t on Milwaukee’s M12 or M18 platforms and it’s obvious you don’t know what you’re talking about. When was the last time you owned a Milwaukee power tool? Milwaukee has had many innovations in the past 15 years, e.g. 18V lithium ion platform to name one. How can they be going down in quality when they have record year over year earnings? They make great tools, tools built to last. I know because I own and use them. When was the last time you called Milwaukee’s customer service, 1-800-SAW-DUST? They have service second to none, with the exception of Hilti or Festool. The6 are courteous, knowledgeable and responsive. If the tools been used and there’s an issue, Milwaukee will most likely honor their 5 year warranty (5 yr on most tools), unless the tool of course showed signs of abuse, then I suppose it would be subjective. You say down hill in the last 15 years...compared to what. Give examples and be specific! They have had all new innovation into brushless, then their Fuel platform within only the last 7 years or so. I really think you’re talking out of the dark side.
Hey Vince...Over here in the UK...I've got a Hoop tunnel to construct, some dahlia beds to make up, greenhouse benching, and a few other jobs around the house to do, so needed to replace my old cheapo power tools...Over the last 2 weeks I've been doing my research, and honestly don't think I would have been as able to make anywhere near the right buying decision, without the help and advice your vids have given me...So just wanted to say a big thank you! Keep up the great work buddy....
When your bit jumps out of that Milwaukee when you are up 2 stories on a ladder will change your mind about it being the best. I have seen an employee slam it on the ground the second time down the ladder out of frustration.
I'm a DeWalt guy, only tool I've had smoke is the 20v brushed drill/driver DCD771. I was drilling into a stump with spade bit to get the copper pipes outs (that's a long story). Had it get really hot & started smoking. Let it cool, about 5min. Kept going, few more holes, smoking again. Let it cool, and so on. Had that thing hot & smoking 3 times. Still working great. Love my DeWalt tools. Yes I know I was over working my tool, but you all know how we get when frustration sets in. I hate that damn tree.
I own a cabinet shop! I have used all the big name drills. I have makita drills that are over 15 years old that still work great. I absolutely love the way makita has transformed all their corded power tools to battery. It sure makes installing cabinets a lot more convenient!
Honestly your tool tests and raw streams are the best. Yeah its great to look at mosfets and engineering but I would rather see the tools drive, drill, hammer and gauge for myself what I think. When watching you guys go head to head and seeing one tool is only .5~1 second faster driving a lag, it puts it into perspective that it might be more important to look at other factors like price, availability, combos or if you already have the battery line. Keep up the good work.
Smoked my Dewalt and upgraded to Metabo HPT triple hammer. Very impressive in my non-professional opinion. Would love to see how it stands up to these four. Keep up the great work!
Stands up well!!! I have two Hitachi versions and the internals are every bit as good as my Makitas!! It should be a reliable upgrade for you!! It also has the best ergonomics/grip IMO of the impacts I own, followed by Makita.
Project Farms video was strictly testing performance. That is how he does his videos and testing, and it works really good for a lot of things, ex: drill bits, utility knife blades, etc. But for tests with tools, it is something you need to take with a grain of salt because it doesn't always relate to real world performance and potential issues with the tool, ex: milwaukee's quick release issue. That's why I'm subscribed to both VGC and Project Farm. Both channels are thorough in their own way and are looking out for their viewers regarding what products to buy/not buy.
Ave, VCG, Project Farm, Concord Carpenter are the channels I am subscribed to. At the end of the day though, my batteries and chargers are DeWalt so 9 times out of 10 I am buying DeWalt.
@Leopold I don't think he was trying to defecate on ole Makita. I remember one video he showed off his collection of angle grinders with different wheels, about five of thwm were Makita. Clearly invests his Canadian pesos in Makita
Can’t say it enough VCG is awesome . I’ve always been a DeWalt good quality tools never needed a reason to buy anything else. With that being said after watching your channel and many videos and so on . I bought the Makita combo set and I’m very happy thanks for all the info you guys are great
I have nothing but love for Makita tools they are awesome but I'm on the Milwaukee platform and regardless of any other platform have a Surge and I wouldn't trade it for anything, it's nice and quiet and it has low vibration and runs nice and smooth.
I use Hilti now but for many years I used Makita. Makita are superb tools. I have four Milwaukee tools and they are all unreliable. I personally think that Hilti is best and you pay for that quality but you won't go wrong with Makita. They will work all day every day for many years. All our work supplied drills are Makita. 👍👍👍. Dave.
“Experience is the best teacher" You remind me so much of my Dad. He has years & years of experience. Sometimes he gives me some advices, and all of them come from the same place, his experience all over the years. He's 57 years old and as far as I know, he has been into this business since he was 15 (more or less) It nice to see the scientific test & all of that but at the end of the day, we can only determine the reliability of our tools in one way: Using them in the real world
Just want to say First and foremost that I Love your videos. I find real world testing to be the best & I honestly watch your reviews before purchasing anything Milwaukee. I am on this platform & don’t see myself changing anytime soon. Now I haven’t read many forums on this issue so I can’t speak on the volume of this problem, but 4 of my coworkers & myself have the fuel m18 & we absolutely love it for its power! Only one of my co workers have had issues but it’s been with the trigger not always engaging. He’s now had two Fuels with the same issue. We build Rvs for a living so the amount of screws we run daily in my opinion is unmatched by most. I myself run 1,200 to 2,000 metal screws daily for the rafters on the roofs I build. We do 21 units a day. My partner has the Makita from this video and my driving power is unmatched, he can’t keep up. I’ve had this impact for about 2 years now & have been through many cycles on my batteries with zero issues. That’s real world testing at its finest. Even if I do have a problem I still have 3 years left on the warranty! That in my opinion is a no brainer. Milwaukee all the way!
@VCG Construction. Thanks Vince for your honest opinions on these impacts. Over the years, I've learned that every company makes stuff that's at least works and maybe isn't the best when compared to others. It really depends on our experience. Milwaukee is really trying to innovate and get into the different trades like Dewalt. It's a real shame that Milwaukee hasn't figured out how to fix the collet issue with their GEN3 impact. Hasn't it been about three years so far? I don't have that impact so I haven't had to deal with the problem (I have three different Makita impacts and a Ridgid with no problems). Ridgid made things right replacing the chuck and motor twice on my 12V drill driver (the chuck keeps loosening and dropping bits). And Ridgid made that model drill where the chuck is riveted to the motor. A impact collet can't be that expensive to replace with one with better retention. Hope you and your family stay safe and well.
I absolutely appreciate the overall testing and result sharing of this information. I'm a new home owner and DIYer and the information you'll provide is priceless... Thank You!!
NOTHING beats years of real-life experience. Thanks for your honest review! No need to justify your recommendations. People who want a more "scientific" review can go to those channels. Thanks man!
Great point!! I have two Hitachi versions and they are excellent, IP56 rated, and a very underappreciated and overlooked impact likely due to the lack of other offerings in their lineup compared to the competition.
Hell yeah. This makes me want to holster my makita and carry it around with me 24/7. Need something tightened? There you go. Need something screwed in? There you go. See how light it is? See its ergonomic design? That's right. Subscribed 🤙
Thanks Vince -- excellent video, and you what you're hitting on is, I think, a critical point for tool evaluation in general. Manufacturers can jack up a particular feature that they know drives sales - but wind up neglecting others that are at least as important but maybe not "hot" features that drive sales. In this case - the XDT16 might not have quite as much high end torque as the Milwaukee, but in real world use it's a great tool for many reasons - AND has a fully functional collet that won't accidentally drop a bit. SO important to consider all the features that are part of real life experience in real jobs, not just the ones that grab marketing headlines.
Been running a makita xdt13 for 8 months for hvac and love it sometimes i want to change to Milwaukee because of the batteries but i feel like im just better off teal and stick with one battery setup
Great vid! For me the platform is more important than a single tool, and I'm not a contractor that needs to have the best of each tool. But yeah I'm on the Makita platform and love this impact driver. Always been impressed by Milwaukee's power in all their tools though and almost went team red, but ultimately the range and quality of Makita's tools won me over. I'm still looking for an excuse to get on team red lol I'm eyeing out the cordless table saw since Makita just doesn't seem like they'll release one.
I'll take real world on the job experience working with a tool over an n-lab scientific test any day of the week. Thank you for this video, I was on the fence but it helped me make my mind up on the Makita. It's coming home.
Damm i know Vince loves his milwaukee tools. To say Makita is the best speaks volumes. Love your honesty Vince Awesome keep up the hard work VCG love you
I started a job near my old home before quarentine and i forget my skillsaw. I found at my father garage a 35 years old 7"1/4 Makita skillsaw He used to maneged and old carpenter where they make carved furniture and they used it like a table saw and that thing still working perfectly well.
I like Makita for being lightweight and durable. Even though I know it doesn’t have as much torque as the other big brands. Plus it always seems to stay cool and the battery lasts longer.
My Makita's have never let down, do their job well. Being using them for well over 12 years. Only upgrade to brushless models and bigger AMP batteries.
Same for me. I was given an 18v Milwaukee set buy my boss and they barely lasted a year, were repaired and went down hill quickly from there. Meanwhile all the company Makita drivers keep on going.
@hotrodd100 Each brand has a good lineup. Milwaukee and Makita focus more on the commercial side...but if you want a good all around brand with an excellent line, check out Ridged
Glad I saw this video. I have some M18 tools but not an impact driver. I'm tired of the "We're going to unbox this..." videos where they don't know what they have. I'd rather ask a guy who's used the stuff on the job.
I have been doing construction for ~15-16 years, I’ve used skil, Bosch, makita, Milwaukee, DEWALT, hitachi, b&d. I am a makita fan as my number one all day every day and Milwaukee is my second then DEWALT in third(the rest I wouldn’t waste my money on, unless you’re just trying to get by for a few small things or around the house)
Vince, you're fantastic! Some of us humans are asked if "we are the way we are all the time", and personally, and it makes me wonder what it must be like to be boring. You have swayed my decision to buy a Dewalt, thank you for the info! Keep on, keeping on dude 😁
I used that dewalt impact every day for a few years before recently switching to bosch (dewalt still works though) there is no protection on that dewalt, so its easy to smoke if you dont regularly let it cool off... any time mine started to get hot I let it cool. if you arent stressing the drill or if you let it cool off when needed (or dont use nonstop) then it wont be an issue
I'm a Millwright, and I've gotta say Milwaukee will always be my cordless tool of choice, thats just me. I have respect for the other cordless, like Dewalt, Makita, and Rigid. Rigid has the best battery warranty out there today! I've always favored the Milwaukee. I have yet to experience the "quick" connect. Still have my manual connect, and have no issues. I understand the engineers wanting make things easier for us and to make the job go faster, but you know the old saying, "if it aint broke"... Thank you for this video! Hope Milwaukee gets it resolved soon. FYI, you're not a dumb contractor! 😁 Stay safe brotha!
I actually have the M18 Brushless as a beater-tool for construction, but my heart is with my Metabo 18V SSD LTX 200 BL and a compact 4Ah battery... I LOVE my Metabo triple hammer impact for everything that requires some precision.
When I bought my first makita tool, I did so after watching these vids. I got the xdt16 and haven't looked back. I never pick up my 787 dewalt anymore. It's just in a different league. The many settings it has makes it a great tool for about anything I need to drill or drive. I feel like it was built just for me lol. I also got the xdt08 1/2 impact and it's a true beast.
I fixed my deck with my 20v dewalt impact driver when they were brand new. Actually i used it to screw underwater that was 6 years ago and its still working today. I actually had it underwater. I bought a replacement set 2 years ago on sale... the new ones dont work anymore...and they were a lot less abused then the old ones.
Dude i have 3 fords with 240 to 370k on them still going strong and have seen 500k miles fords dozens of times. Toyotas do NOT last any longer. I know guys who work at toyota as techs and they drive fords and chevys because toy's arent what they're made out to be. No reason to buy foreign at all.
Bro I believe you I know, I understand what do you mean with years and years of work and use, that's the best way to test any equipment because use allow you to meet the the product performance, reliability, endurance and some another characteristics of it. 👍
Another great and honest video Vince! Im a DIYer and watching you VCG guys the past 2-3 years and really appreciate your work, honesty and willing to bring out the best tool review that will really make sense on the user at any level and field regardless brand favorites. I watched loads of your videos (almost feels like i met you lol) and learn lots of stuff, and also help me take decisions on tool buying...Well done guys, keep up the great work! P.S. regarding m18 collet issue, i really expected millwaukee to provide a proffessional reply/alternative fix or small kit after your reviews/raw videos, recommendations and contact efforts you did the past ~1.5 years.
Amazing response... People don't understand life isn't based solely on science. You can't quantify feel, ergonomics, etc... Plus the TTR is to see how the tool perform with a person, we are not robots and everyone works a little different. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the show. People get too emotionally attached to a brand. They re just corporations trying to get your money.
Ford! Chevy! No, my Dodge is better! I buy tools and equipment for the job and more importantly, the budget at that moment. However, I also prefer buying once and crying once.
@@jmackinjersey1 some people don't understand why I have multiple brands of tools. Simple, I get the best one for the job... Yes, there's a little drawback of not having completely interchangeable batteries, but that's what an adapter is made for. Also buy once cry once too, good tool are not expensive in the long run because they last.
@@free2chasehappy I've seen a few battery adapters, but I don't use them. Then again, I don't have any power tools right now, as a while ago, all of my tools grew legs one day and I haven't seen them sense. I had an older Ryobi kit, but I was tired of buying replacement batteries that only lasted a short amount of time when I would try to use them on jobsites. Anyway, I'm about ready to dive into the Milwaukee tools, because that is what I had before, and they never let me down. So as soon as I see the next installment of the Milwaukee tools Pipeline and they tell us some more info on the tools they plan on releasing, I'll go out and begin replacing. I mean, if they are releasing a new impact and a better collet, then it is worth the wait.
@@jmackinjersey1 sad that it happened to you. Tools are not cheap. Yeap, milwaukee has never let me down too. I used the m12 line for installation... Compact and powerful. I'm really happy with them. For woodworking side, I use dewalt 20V line, that's where milwaukee is still playing catch up. I will say makita has the best fit and finish, and what I believe to be the longest lasting of the big three brands, just a little pricey.
@@free2chasehappy Well, I learned the hard way that it is worth the extra dollars to get the HD Extended Warranty on the power tools. I'll pay $100 dollars for an extra three years, no question asked replacement on a $500 miter saw, on top of the manufacturers warranty. 8 years in total.
@donkey ass reviews and do's Makita did not invent the cordless drill. Black and Decker did that in 1961, YEARS before Any other brand. Yes, I've owned the Makita in the past, but they were stuck in first gear and everyone else blew past them in performance and they continued to produce the same old tools. Eventually they came out with new and improved tools, but they were and still are in a catch up mode. Are they good tools? Of course, I'm not taking that away. But we all have different needs, and we all know that when it comes to power and performance, Milwaukee dominates in that part of the market. Longevity? Milwaukee is also a leader in that arena, and I will also give a nod to Makita in their longevity department. Where are these "false figures" that you make claim to?
@donkey ass reviews and do's Also, when you are using Any power tool, you should be using ear/eye protection. When you are on a job site and there are a lot of things going on, you should be wearing safety gear any way. So if one tool makes 2 Db more than another tool, it really isn't a big deal.
20 yrs of commercial work and never had that problem, that extra power makes a big difference in a commercial job. But one thing of you never notice about the down side to milwaukee is the batteries, with great power comes great battery draining. Milwaukee, Dewalt, bosch, makita,
As an engineer, I strive to design parts to be robust and durable. Sometimes the testing of prototype parts can be difficult because of the way the end user will handle the part but that's where the scientific theory comes in to play. I appreciate hearing from users of products that are designed with the user in mind. It gives great feedback and helps to influence future designs and even improve existing designs. I'm not a tradesman, I'm a homeowner/diy type of guy and although I don't use the tools nearly as often, but I do admire a good tool that's dependable and one that can be passed down to my kid. That's why I appreciate the videos from VCG Construction.
I use the Surge as my go to and the Gen 2 as a backup. I have a peeve with the noise and I luv how nimble the Surge is. No issues with either except a trigger smoke up on the Surge a while back. Replaced under warranty no problem.
@@jdmoores28 I commented a few days ago wondering this.. I need a new line of compact but strong tools. After hearing the issue of the m18 collet i decided to hold off on the m12 line until someone responds... it seems because all the liked comments get pinned to the top, us small guys will never be seen.
I am a Makita fan too. 🤓 My LXT Impact Driver was my first investment. My second one is Makita Combi-Drill. These tools are ergonomically suited to my fingers/hands. Other makers are too bulky to hold. Yes, as a woman I admire the esthetics of my Makitas. They just look good.😉
I am finding the batteries are as important to me as the tools. Yes I like the high outputs but I like the Bosch batteries best, I think maybe dewalt even has a similar size 4ah compact 21700 battery. That’s important to me, small but powerful. Might go skil too at those prices I can just replace them when they break
I have an old bosch cordless tool set ( 10 years old ) that has never given me any problems. The batteries still charge to maximum capacity, whilst delivering a decent run time.
i recently switched from dewalt to bosch (hammer drill, freak impact, and recip saw) and love them! the batteries even work with my dewalt heated jacket with an adapter. no longer a black and yellow fan boy
@@Fee.1 I have dewalt 2.0 batteries that are pretty small that I use most of the time, but when I need the jacket on high for a long time the 4.0 are nice. the bosch adapter has a belt clip so its not bad.
I worked in the gutters for some time we use 6 inches lags screws we have milwaukee and after like 2 hours your hand hurts. I recently bought makita it's a pleasure to hold it in my hand 😍
Was helping build a house today and literally had an issue with the M18 Fuel quick release collet someone else brought. I gotta say, despite being an old underdog, my DeWalt 885 has been great and the quick insert collet has no issues. :D

I used to be a nobody until I used a Makita impact driver.
I’m a plumber and have all Milwaukee. But they can pry my Makita impact driver from my cold dead hands.
Was the new one still made in Japan?
@@chrisx5127Nope,they are all made in china. I have a cordless 18v makita drill, hammer drill, impact, angle grinder and a small vacuum and they are all made in china. And i have some 220v grinders,a big 220v vacuum and they are also made in china. Best tools you can buy to use and abuse every day in my opinion. And 90% of people i see on construction sites use makita tools,no one even bothers with DeWalt or Milwaukee. The other 10% use Bosch.
Going on 8 or 9 years with the Makita 18v impact. Still goes hard and has never failed or been serviced yet! Makita is hands down my favorite still!

Vince,
Your video also helped a lot of people (Home Owners, Contractors, DIY, New & Older Carpenter) on picking which tools to invest their money into.

He’s brought this up many times in multiple videos and to multiple people at Milwaukee. I’m sure he’s frustrated from the response of them doing nothing so he made this video.(I would’ve done the same) he is one of Milwaukee’s best sales rep out there that doesn’t work for them. I started out with Makita and the batteries just don’t last long enough.
Thanks the Truth, we appreciate it!
Thanks for the video.
...If you like the "teal blue" colors, there is an alternative to the Makita...Harbor Freight calls it "Hercules".. :)

Yeah, being on multiple battery platforms does suck.

You’re my go to guy for tool reviews period. Makita is my favorite platform. it’s not always the best, but it’s never the worst.

I was actually surprised how well they function, and also their durability.

ive experienced this only on the 2016 era lxt brushed. all my new ones have been much better im in the 40v models now though
Every milwuakee I have ever bought has broken the head off completely. Snapped clean in half between the motor and gear set.

The 886 is the last good impact they made. I sold mine in 2016 to get the xdt12 and last year I traded my xdt13 for an 886. The 887 is complete garbage that I ended up putting in the trash. Bought several of them and had issues with all of them.
I love my makita tools for 18v, but I also love the Milwaukee M12 line. Both outstanding tools👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
I have the 16 also and it's my go to.

Thx Vince. Appreciate your honest no bs approach and as a Diy’er I value your opinions and experience.

Thanks Roger we appreciate it! 👍🏻

“Experience is the best teacher"
You remind me so much of my Dad. He has years & years of experience. Sometimes he gives me some advices, and all of them come from the same place, his experience all over the years.
He's 57 years old and as far as I know, he has been into this business since he was 15 (more or less)
It nice to see the scientific test & all of that but at the end of the day, we can only determine the reliability of our tools in one way: Using them in the real world
I remember seeing that collet issue with the Milwaukee when Vince was facing Nick and the DeWalt. I think it was during the spaddle bit tests.
Hmm...interesting, since Ridgid and Milwaukee are owned by the same Chinese company...so is Ryobi....
Lab testing is great, but real world experience is also just as important. Thank you for your video.
I absolutely appreciate the overall testing and result sharing of this information. I'm a new home owner and DIYer and the information you'll provide is priceless... Thank You!!

Love the vid. My Friend had Dewalt impact and when i started working construction he said better get Makita and i got one plus he later got one to.
I have both the Mil gen 3 and the Makita XDT16.. I find myself using the Makita every time! The Makita has quicker trigger response also!
I've used my DeWalt almost every day for three years with no problems... maybe I got lucky and got the one good one.
Makita for the win!! Great video. Love the none bias view
I bought a replacement set 2 years ago on sale... the new ones dont work anymore...and they were a lot less abused then the old ones.
makita is the best!!! it’s like toyota doesn’t have much power like ford mustang 5.0 GT but run longer with no problem
Jamibry! Watts 💯
@@jamibrywatts8378 except your precious Milwaukee tools are made in Vietnam.
@@mrbuddha5263 own 0 Milwaukee tools.
@@jamibrywatts8378 I'm only in the m12 line, other than that i'm Makita for my 18v platform
What this man said were pure facts. Quick release collet designs tend to wear out much faster than the manual release collets.
This video is the reason why I have been watching your videos and continue to watch. Thank you.
Makita feels better in the hand than Milwaukee as well.
I can say that Milwaukee seems to be made for those of us with larger hands.
@donkey ass reviews and do's thank you for your words they are correct.
@donkey ass reviews and do's Power comes at the expense of control? Well, then I suggest you tighten up your wrist.
This is a great video!!! Thanks Vince!!
After watching your videos I went with the makita xdt16, really nice piece of tool.
Thanks.
Major team Red here but the collet is a VERY AGGRIVATING issue. Seems to happen at the worst moments as well.
Yet the m12 fuel impacts collet works perfectly
Justin man those 4ah batteries don’t feel too big for a jacket? I wouldn’t want anything but a cp3.0
@@Fee.1 I have dewalt 2.0 batteries that are pretty small that I use most of the time, but when I need the jacket on high for a long time the 4.0 are nice. the bosch adapter has a belt clip so its not bad.
Justin oh yea 2.0’s are nice especially the 12v
Thanks man. I was considering if I should get the Makita. Now, I'm pretty confident that I will go for Makita DTD171 (aka. XDT16 in US).
Grab dtd172, it is better
