    Road construction is frustrating, but it is necessary. As mentioned the city is being proactive for the population growth. As a lifelong El Pasoan there is also another reason for the road construction. Decades past our community was repeatedly short changed for road funds by the state. It took a lawsuit and going to court to correct this inequity. The funding formula was revised and now we get funds to build and/or improve our roads, so we are still playing road repair catch-up due to the intentional state-sanctioned funding discrimination that took place for many years.

    Thanks for your channel!! I will subscribe. We moved here to El Paso from New York City in 2017. I love it here and so did my husband before he passed away on May 5, 2022. When we first arrived in El Paso, we lived out in the far east (right off of Rich Beem). It's a beautiful area. But, we moved to the west side in 2020 to be close to my husband's job at Providence Hospital. Although my husband is gone, I will probably remain in El Paso for the rest of my life. Peace.

    My family was in El Paso on Sept 4 and 5th, I found El Paso to be a very clean city. I explored a lot of El Paso on the 5th, I was impressed, my wife and daughter who are both extremely picky were impressed! My wife and daughter were so impressed they have already made arrangements to transfer there! One of the things he talks about is service, John and Oscar provide 5 star service! Labor day weekend was a very busy time for them, they had a lot of clients still Oscar found time to give us a tour and John who had a stacked schedule met us at The Rib-hut{ excellent food If I may say} he spent quite some time with us. They make you feel extremely comfortable like you've known them all your life, they are more than real estate agents they really care. The industry should follow their example of customer service

    The silver lining to dust storms is the fact that they are NOT blizzards.
    As far as service, I found it very hard to be upset with slow service, missed appointments etc. because I felt most people were inordinately friendly. Really hard to be angry with someone who is smiling at you.
    For me the worst thing about El Paso is the narrow selection of restaurants. Especially healthy options.
    I spent over a month in El Paso this year and found few good vegan reastaurants. No authentic Sichuan, Cantonese, or Hunan. No Ethiopian. Hopefully as El Paso grows, this will present a great opportunity for some restaurateurs.
    At least there is Korea House, a great Korean place rivaling any in the San Francisco Bay Area.
    Fortunately, I can cook most of the Asian and vegetarian food and there are deceny markets for all ingredients.
    I will have to learn Ethiopian cooking.

    • @jamesmedina2062
      @jamesmedina2062 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You focused on two cultural foods but in just about any category, healthiness is not possible because there is zero locally grown foods.
      I think it may never happen that El Paso improves to the level of other cities especially because I doubt food will ever be grown here. Growing food takes a commitment to hard work and also better climate for plants. Its so dry here. Over five years I still cannot find people wanting to exercise because laziness abounds. I offer hiking, tennis, trail-running, basketball, soccer, and more options and nobody wants to exercise. The air quality and local pollution due to no emissions testing of vehicle contributes to this. People want to drink and breweries are one of the latest trends that is a good investment. What is interesting on topic of exercise is that I see hundreds of gyms everywhere. Perhaps thats the only way people want to exercise here. I would say so.
      I make Ethiopian food but still not injera. I make some Asian foods like Indian, Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, and Filipino. I would like to make it as its lovely and thought of opening a restaurant with it but if money is in short supply no one can introduce a novel restaurant without big pockets and 5 years to give it for slow going. All new restaurants will fail unless they have big money to invest and/or more time and consistency to build a name. People here have never tried any ethnic foods, thinking they have tried Chinese or Italian when they have not ever had the real stuff. They have tried Americanized Chinese. Notice the Korean places would close down unless they also made "Chinese food" for El Pasoans.
      I am afraid we will continue seeing wings, burgers, fries, and burritos and none of these will be in a healthy category.

  • @ll7165
    @ll7165 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Customer service currently is lacking at restaurants because of a shortage of workers too. With that being said you must pack patience and understand that things move slower here. If you have a strong sense of entitlement and expect a sense of urgency from staff you WILL have problems. If service is really sub-par then it has to be within reason and that is when I recommend you speak to the manager. Be strategic if you are in a hurry or have some leisure time. Don't expect quick service at a sit-down restaurant if you are in a time crunch, for example, you are on your lunch break during work. If it's the weekend and you have two or three hours to spare with family then go to a sit-down restaurant and just enjoy yourselves.
    Also research any company/individual that you want to hire for landscaping or home improvement. What I see is that a lot of people want a stellar job for minimal cost. As the old adage goes 'you get what you pay for' and this is very true here. Watch out for contractors/individuals who ask for the entire amount up front. You never want to pay the full quote before work commences. If they insist then do not use their services and instead go with someone else. The local Better Business Bureau is a good resource for researching.

    • @kellygreen5556
      @kellygreen5556 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've found multiple businesses with one price on the sign out front or the item on the shelf and a higher price when you buy it. This may happen anywhere but only in El Paso I've had to argue to get the advertised price. And they still won't bother to change the sign. They act like they are doing you a favor not to cheat you. I don't know if they are just stupid or crooks.
      And speaking of "entitlement" the bums who demand your attention to get "change" even when you are at a restaurant table are too much. I guess the people handing money to obvious druggies feel better about themselves.
      There is a strong sense of identification with the lowest here. I've had someone tell me " You never know when you will be in that position" to justify handing money to a drunkard. This same " giver" is behind on his rent and can't manage money. No, I do know I would not be in that position.

The drive thru fast-food restaurants are always crowded, and you have to wait in line all the time. There are always people with attitude whether your rich or poor hear in Los Angeles. Im in Auburn,WA and i was planning on moving to el paso affter i finished my Degree to look for work. About the Service thing heres how ive always done it. If i like to eat at a place (1-3 times a month) i ALWAYS make sure to leave a decent tip because i can already see just by observing everything that these restaurants are understaffed which creates pressure on the employees thats been having to pick up the slack. Im not saying tip a crazy amount just enough a decent amount (usually $10 i tip) and i noticed anytime i ever went back i was always treated very well and had very fast service, im not saying that was the only reason because im sure poeple just down right disrespectful to some of these waiters/workers. Thats just my 2 cents sorry that was kinda long lol.

    Horizon? Duh dude you were in the desert. I used to go hunting there back in 70's - 80's.
    It's dry heat compared to so much humidity in east Texas. Road construction... that's infrastructure repairing our roads. We don't get Hurricanes, massive Tornados or extreme Earthquakes. We do get occasional flooding in some parts of EL PASO but not everywhere. It's a safer place to live in regards to catastrophic storms. We're on an upgraded power grid not like east Texas ( ERCOT).
    We also have the largest Inland Desalination water system in the World!

Since I got here to El Paso TX. every bathroom doesn't have a solid frame in the corners for showers. I’m not getting any feedback to observations and questions but I’ll try again. I KNOW you are extremely busy making a living. But, when buyers are expected to pay 20 to 30 thousand dollars above asking price for home, are the appraisals then raised to the sale price? Has anyone ever seen their property taxes lowered? Paying a premium above what a home is valued at in this market shows poor judgement and impatience. The last boom we had caused many homeowners to be underwater and lose them. That might not be the case with this market but it could take years to get back into the black with that home value. People should just wait this out. When the market corrects there will be plenty available at the right prices.

      There is little or no cultural diversity in El Paso and cultural amenities and arts are all about the hispanic experience. This should come as no surprise given the overwhelming hispanic demographic here and, in fairness, it is probably unreasonable to expect it to be otherwise. If you are hispanic and attached to your culture, you'll love it. If not and, like myself, you have no interest in immersing yourself in the culture you will struggle. I'm not a fan of hot weather which means I find the summers to be extremely long and oppressive. The novelty of the desert landscape will wear off quite quickly. I'd rather be almost anywhere else, but it is not possible for family reasons for at least the next four years. Sixteen years of desert penance served, four more to go. My mother still lives in El Paso. When I return to El Paso I go to Taco Cabana and the State Line (right outside of El Paso). I think Bella Napoli is still open, but Jaxon's is not. I visited every few years and noticed the strippers were getting scarier every year - and that is enough to comment on the night life since there isn't much else to do once you've seen all the movies - the theaters are nice. Hueco Tanks is no longer free range romp, but that might be for the best. The highway aggression is pretty bad, but most large cities are still worse. The testing center I went to for a certification three years or so ago was staffed by a pro, so that's a plus. The pay for software engineers was at least $40/hr less that other places in the country for the same experience. Fireworks on July 4th at Wet and Wild is awesome - even if you're parked on the side of the Interstate off ramps. Cops could have been better ... or worse. Still in the belt buckle of the Bible Belt - take that for what it is. It doesn't have a Waffle House. Weather is good for motorcycles, but the traffic isn't. I came to El Paso in Spring 2020, was excited to call it home for the long-term, but moved out this Fall 2021. Lack of good-paying jobs, overpriced housing (especially for renters), lack of quality housing, and annoying monsoonal thunderstorms & floods just about everyday during the past summer were the main reasons I left. I found housing and a good-paying job out-of-state in one week's time, something that couldn't be accomplished in the 15 months I was in El Paso. There is some institutional racism/discrimination against blacks and some non-Hispanic people there too, but not enough to be as concerning as the other reasons I listed.
    Another issue is that some people lack respect and consideration for other people's space, property, and peace. This is how some conflicts occur, people leaning or sitting on your vehicle, putting dents on your vehicle from parking too close, and blaring loud music or revving custom truck mufflers that sound like a thousand bullfrogs with chronic bronchitis, etc. The crime that does occur here revolve mostly around shootings, assaults, domestic violence, and vehicle thefts.
    As far as the worst things list, my take: 1. Dust -- it is the desert after all, but the dust storms are manageable. Just pull over and turn off your lights if caught in one on the interstate. 2. Heat -- it too is manageable. Mostly, it's a dry heat, but limit time outdoors between noon and sunset. It doesn't get much hotter than 105°F many days when it exceeds 100°F in the summer. Your biggest issue is the year-round high winds and seasonal floods anytime it rains, not the heat (the winds can get strong enough to cause property damage). 3. Traffic -- it is getting worse by the year city-wide, particularly in the fast-growing East El Paso area toward and past Loop 375. I-10 is consistently congested all over town, as is West El Paso (limited by geography, Franklin Mountains, compressed road network infrastructure). El Paso, the farther east of Airway Blvd you go, the more congested the roads get and the more road construction you will encounter. It won't end anytime soon, given the unsatisfactory pre-existing condition of the pavement, etc. It's not only El Paso residents that congest the roads, it is also citizens from Cuidad Juarez (a city of 1 million+ population) who regularly commute in El Paso, so there are some long, slow commutes (not as bad as Los Angeles, et. al.). 4. Service -- Video is spot on here, although I have witnessed or been subjected to some bad customer service, that is believed to be isolated perceived work ethic issues and lack of common sense on the behalf of the employee. Most, particularly teen-aged employees, have demonstrated the best customer service I've seen. 5. Property taxes -- highest in the whole state, and it goes up every year. This affects renters as well, because the increases get passed on to them. These taxes are one of the main reasons that even El Paso-born or long time residents split from the city for places like San Antonio, Texas.
    As usual, nice job with the videos and content.

      Your comments are very spot on, and thanks for revealing the reasons behind some of the issues that plague El Paso. I'ld like to add something or at least throw it out there... I had lived in the central Florida area for 20 years... Until a physical problem completely derailed my life and I was forced to move back home. All of Central Florida is very multicultural. And.. Moving back I thought I would be coming back into a comfortable life.. Where everyone looked like me, spoke and acted like me.. (people from Mexico aside) instead.. (politics) El Paso is growing in ways in which does force El Pasoans to feel trapped. My blood like has been traced back 5 generations.. To this northern Mexico and New Mexican regions. There is a culture here... And.. Honestly.. It feels like it's being eroded... If taken the time to speak to elderly people... That might be the number one complaint... (I don't like the people anymore..)
      Anyway, thanks, my two cents. Peace.

    Service: they are racist. I am from there and tried to move back in 2013. Out of almost 80 applications not one interview. My application did not make it past the front desk.

      Or perhaps it could be your attitude, educational background or something else? Also employers now look at social media so if you post a bunch of dumb sh*t you are probably not going to get hired. You should look at yourself first before blaming everybody else.

      L L, first of all you have know knowledge of me. Therefore your assumption of me are totally wrong. I don’t have to explain myself to you or anyone else. But I did not have any social media accounts up until about 1 year ago. So that’s out!!! Second of all that is my home town an before I moved away I had applied for a job, I was considered bilingual. There was only one white person working there. She personally called me and said I am trying hard to get you on. Well low and behold they hired someone who was not bilingual and did not pass any of the testing as I did!!! But since she came across the border they could hire here for cheaper than what they would pay me. So yeah I’m pulling the racist card big time. Same thing happened in 2013! Do before you go placing judgment on anyone, get your facts straight. Go look in the mirror and judge that what you see looking back at you! I’m done with you! .

    Damn so if i buy a $200,000 house i have to pay 6k a year in taxes? Damn lmfao 🤣

      I’m good a rather rent and pocket them 6k in my savings since I’ll live there for bout 20 years but not going to be the place i will retire. Then those 6k a year for 20 years meaning 120k could easily give you a good down payment elsewhere and live well… Other than that El Paso is the perfect place to live 👌🏼
