  • In this tutorial we'll model a Tractor Tire by first laying out some guide curves and then creating a tillable pattern and using lattices and a bend deformer to create the final shape.

    @Alex Cheparev
    The bend deformer seems to work best with meshes that have straight ends/caps. The tiling pattern in this case has pointy ends with vertices at varying positions along the z axis . To fix this and get easier results with the bend modifier you can create an axis aligned cut anywhere along the tread mesh and detach the polygons of say the left side. If you then move this segment over to the other side (with vertex snapping) you can create a tread with left and right side having straight edges. Bending this now into a circle leads to almost perfect alignment where both ends touch each other. I'll make a short video when I find the time. But I hope you get the point. Nice video!

    Great tutorial, learned some new techniques and shortcuts, thanks! Just a simple question, I have problems with the snapping tool, it snaps very randomly and probably 1 out of 10 times. Whats the trick to make it work like you make it work in the video - perfectly snapping every time?

    Great tutorial, do you have a set of 'best practices' for modeling that can be applied to all projects? For example the way you use lattice deformers for moving larger parts of your geometry, which can be applied to almost any modeling subject. Are there other general rules of thumb similar to this?

    Many thanks for the hard work man!
    One question if I may:
    How can i change my settings so that my objects have the same color as the one you are using?
    I am using the default ones but i love that dark grey color you are using.

    • @AlexCheparev
      @AlexCheparev  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So, that's because by default, Maya turns on Color Management, and if you don't work in a studio where they control the color profiles, you don't need it on. To turn it off, go to Windows > Settings/Preferences > Preferences > Color Management; uncheck 'Enable Color Management' and at the bottom, click 'Export CM Pref'. Save the .xml file anywhere and name it anything you want. Now Color Management will always be off when you turn on Maya.
      Or, you can always hit the ON button above the viewport on the right hand side, next to sRGB gamma menu, but you have to do it every time you start maya.

    Why? Your adding massive amounts of geometry with your method? Go get a reference to a tractor tire. Make a cube. Extrude one end inward delete the bottom of the object. Crease the bottom of the cube about 3/4 crease the top about 1/2 Duplicate it equally multiple times. Mirror the group of duplicates attach vertices the duplicates for both sides. Use deformation of the fully bridged tire tread to make it a cylinder. Create a tube with co-responding edge loops Delete the outer edges of the tube(inner edges will be used for the Rim extrusion). Unify the tread and the tube bridge and or merge the vertices than start forming the outside of the tire with edge loops. Who taught you this method? The geometry is Horrid for Uv mapping and for bringing into ZBrush or other 3D apps. Terrible tutorial. Good to know topology but if you were to make this in a production environment your boss would wonder why it took you 4 hours to model a tire.

    • @AlexCheparev
      @AlexCheparev  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the tire I used as reference: encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTgLtNpLPlWdx2mkn560ae7-jUbYv8q3bi8hskOPN64ca5acC7lbg
      Why would you take this into ZBrush? This model has UVs, they were easy to make, and it's production ready. The geometry is subdivide-able. Not sure where you are coming from with your comment. You are free to make your own tutorial and I'll be glad to review it.
