My Attempt at Breeding Clownfish (Part 1) + Weeping Willow Leather Fragging

  • My DaVinci Clownfish have started to spawn so I’m gonna try and rear the fry! I also needed to frag the weeping willow leather coral.
    Disclaimer: I have never bred clownfish before so if you’ve had success, I would love any advice. My goal is to take you through the entire breeding and rearing process. Ideally, I’d like to be successful in raising 10-20 babies - that’s my goal.
    I haven’t decided what I will do with the other Weeping Willow frags. If you have any ideas, please let me know. I think one of them is going to be a reef-warming gift for another TH-camr but there’s still a couple left! I might have to include some zoanthids as well.

    The book "Clownfishes" by Joyce Wilkerson helped me a lot when I was getting into breeding clowns. I used a 5.5g with a painted white bottom with a sponge filter to rear the eggs. Phyto and rotifers are easy, the sucking out dead babies everyday with a rigid airline tube and making sure you don't shock them with water changes is the hardest part imo. I started doing gallon water changes from my reef everyday or every other day and had the most success. Good luck!

    Up the light and the flow and the weeping willow will take off and grow very fast. I’ve got 4 very large 6-8”+ colonies, and 2 medium to large 4” colonies. Bunch of frags. Indonesian type. Also have the bright neon green Japanese weeping willows. Definitely have keep after fragging these. They can get massive. Original momma was about 16-18” across when open.

      @@BahamaLlamaCoral for real, they are soo cute and once you get over culturing rotifers and the first month it’s smooth sailing. For culturing rotifers and copepods I use ocean nutrition RG Complete phyto, it’s fully intact and live cells and is the most concentrated stuff I’ve ever seen, a few drop of this stuff has more phyto than an entire ounce of oceanmagik phyto or anything else. It also has a built in pH buffer and ammonia neutralizer. Just sharing my experience, hope you find it helpful!

  • @adamkwek5888
    @adamkwek5888 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Remy, I have breed clownfish before . No rotifer no clownfish fry . Most important at larvae stage is u need to keep the water clean . 6days rotifer after that you slowly switch to bbs . Newly hatch is the best to feed . Very fun to breed fish ... good luck !🥳

    • @BahamaLlamaCoral
      @BahamaLlamaCoral  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're saying you need rots or you don't? Also, what do you suggest for water change percentage and frequency in the first 6 days?

    • @adamkwek5888
      @adamkwek5888 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BahamaLlamaCoral hi , you need rotifer to feed for 6 days . Everyday water change 10 % . When you see clownfish lay eggs , 8days later they will hatch . The key to catch the fry is to use red light , the fry will get shock and die if u use too strong light . Dim the light for 24hrs for the 1st day . Cheers!

    Im curently raising some fry. I personally didnt bother culturing phyto since it was too much work culturing rotifers and taking care of the fry at the same time. I used a product called easy roti made by easy reefs. Its basically a mix of phyto in a gel like consistancy. I feed a 2l culture of rotifers with 8ml of easy roti. Its way easier than culturing live phyto.

    Rotifers are easy, you just can't ignore them for long. Before you get anything I would invest in a cheap but not dirt cheap microscope. Since you make youtube videos get one that comes with a phone attachment so you can share what you're seeing. Without a microscope you cannot monitor your rotifer culture. I prefer to catch my larvae with a larvae trap rather then remove the eggs before they hatch. Buy your rotifers from reed mariculture and all your other things, tdo, rg complete or another rotifer food. Don't rush and don't worry about failure if you fail you get another chance in 2 weeks or less. One regret I have is rushing.

    I always wanted to breed my clownfish, sadly one of the clownfish jumped out and died. But Great video

      The mother jumped about 3 months ago and I just happened to walk downstairs a couple minutes after it happened! She swam upside down for about 10 minute but recovered. Silly fish!
