This scene is incredible, because if you know the killing joke, you immediately know the joke he going to tell and you immediately know who the man is. Jason has built a bit of a dialogue with the man, and our predilection is to trust him. But all of it breaks immediately as you watch Jason realize who hes talking to. Then when Joker realizes who hes talking to, he knows hes probably going to die, but all he does is smile in pure glee. Its haunting and amazing

Jason and Joker seem to genuinely be trying to turn over a new leaf, but as soon as they realize who the other is (in itself is done insanely well), all bets are off. The scene gives me the impression that the Joker was never truly seeking out a new life. He's alone at a diner and someone sits next to and what's the first thing he does? Comment on current events and reminisce on the past like a soldier or warrior who misses the war.
He desperately wants to go back to how things used to be but feels that he can't. The current Batman holds no interest for him so he just declines like a jaded sloth. But Jason is different, he's interesting! Jason Todd gives him a thrill and that's all he needs to light that demented spark of his.

It was literally a masterpiece of a scene.

So fun fact about this scene as well: there are several direct references to past Batman media, but they all have something that connects them; The Killing Joke is obvious in this scene; The Battle for the Cowl is the first time we see Dick Grayson take up the mantle of the Bat for the first permanent time; The Dark Knight Returns is in the eye stab by Jason Todd when it was a Batarang to the eye of the the Joker by Bruce in that comic; and Paula’s Diner from Arkham Knight (I don’t know if it is, but it’s visually similar).
Ironically, all four pieces have a common element: by the end of each, either Bruce or Joker are actually dead or made to seem they are dead both in world or out of it.
In The Killing Joke, Batman seemingly kills Joker in the last panel. Said last panel has been up for interpretation for years and can go either way with it.
In The Battle for The Cowl, Bruce is actually dead because he was killed by Darkseid. Although, this was before the writers brought him back later because no one stays dead in comics except for Uncle Ben.
In the Dark Knight Returns, Joker is either, killed by Batman again or kills himself. Again, this is up for heavy interpretation.
In Arkham Knight, Bruce is seemingly dead or actually dead and Joker has been dead and cremated for months. While the Joker is confirmed dead in the universe, Bruce’s death is hazy at best.
I find it interesting that this scene references four Batman stories that all end in death, much like this scene ends in the death of the Joker, because this was the result of the interactive vote.

Joker always talks about how Batman is his reason for doing what he does, and here we see that all this time he really did mean it. Without batman he hasn't just quit crime, he's completely depressed. The only thing that puts a smile on his face is realizing that he's talking to the one piece of Batman he still has left. Not every single batman is the same and more times than not, batman just hates joker and wants nothing to do with him.
FEW batman villains are worthy of sympathy like mr.freeze, but joker isn't one of them.
And batman's villains don't have "justification" for why they do what they do, they have their OWN reasons, that's entirely different. Being "justified" means their in the right in their actions, which NONE of them are at all in the right for doing ANY of this EXCEPT for maybe redhood and that's it.
Ivy doesn't want "humanity to respect nature" AT ALL, she wants to KILL OFF humans and replace them with all plants, that's a MASSIVE difference.

And a part of it is specifically because it's *not* delivered as the finale of The Killing Joke, but The Joke. The Joke that he wants to tell anyone who will listen, his explanation for why he can't ever fully rejoin normal society. And it's delivered in a moment of incredible tension, building to a point where the punchline becomes his total ignorance of the fact that his audience knows the joke beginning to end.

Then when he realizes Jason was the Robin he beat to death, the smile is Joker finally feeling that old excitement, the thrill of mentally toying with the heroes of the city. This scene makes me realize a few things:
Sometimes I can agree with Jason Todd's methods. I know killing is wrong and against the law but the Joker is a psychopathic murderer who deserves to die. Period. If you put him in jail or an asylum he will escape and kill again. So, in this instance I think taking the low road was the right road. Also, seeing how deadly one of the Robins are, can we imagine how scary Batman would be if he did kill? This was Jason taking out two armed police officers without even trying. And his flawless killing blow on the Joker with a butter knife was actually a lot harder than it looks.

I mean, as a someone in the real world who knows about the character and of the fact that the Joker can never be permanently rehabilitated because it would take away the essence, fun and presence of the character, killing him is the only logical option since no sane writer would just get rid of the Joker by rehabilitating him. That’s one of the reasons I think Injustice goes a bit overkill to villanize Superman since he goes from killing Joker, a supervillain that has committed numerous heinous acts, bombed the entirety of Metropolis, killed his wife and unborn child (which would give him a fair reason to do it without most of his superhero peers judging him too much) and that even most heroes deep down would want to kill to just all of a sudden killing every single supervillain he comes across and establishing the Regime, which frankly doesn’t seem like the logical outcome of just killing Joker
