Oscar Wilde once remarked that the definition of loneliness is someone who can't stand their own company. I'm persuaded that the biggest problem for many expats might be loneliness - a sense of social and cultural isolation compounded by the pernicious effects of constant, cheap alcohol. I've always traveled solo. I'm happy with my own company, completely tee-total (for most of my life), pretty creatively minded, and keen on physical exercise. But occasionally on some of my extended travels in SE Asia, I have felt a vague sense of creeping isolation. At one point (in Vietnam) I even had a resort manager come and have a chat with me, doubtless because he was concerned at this strangely aloof, somewhat singular fellow who seemed to do little but go for long walks, swim in the rooftop pool, and read on his bungalow porch, with only an implacably indifferent gecko for company. I was perfectly happy, though. It's a funny world.

“No matter how far you travel, you can never get away from yourself. It’s like your shadow. It follows you everywhere. - Haruki Murakami, After the Quake. One can try and reinvent oneself in a foreign country, but you will always be there. I hope Ed doesn't think life will suddenly be better from now on as he's now in SE Asia.

Most vlogs about Pattaya are actually commercial vlogs. They invite people to come to Pattaya, like its the escape of a boring life @ home. But living in Pattaya, and going out every night, is not only financial impossible, it will shorten your life. ( fatty liver). In his next destination Ayuthaya, Eddy will notice that in those sleepy towns, without nightlife, streets are after 10pm deserted like in western country's.

A positive retirement is very much a state of mind I think. I retired on my 54th birthday on the tiniest of budgets . As long as I can get travel to a new country every couple of months I’m golden.
The time in between is spent doing yoga, sitting in my favourite coffee shop researching up coming trips, seeing family and friends….Time passes quickly and I’m never bored.
I drink/get high just twice a week (a difficult but vital discipline)
If I was retired overseas I’d be on Ko Phangan in a beachside bamboo hut spending next to nothing, I’ve met quite a few authors who claim that the island is very conducive to their creativity…. Somewhere like Pattaya would bore me senseless within a week.

I have always enjoyed your videos. What struck me in this one was 10 days in Thailand and you have hit the beer again, hmmm, definitely don't feel guilty but practice saying no to yourself every time you find an excuse to down a pint. It's a slippery slope and one I have learnt to scramble off from. After 9 months living in Jomtien/Pattaya I venture to say a perceptible majority drink here, many at breakfast 😂...this creates a social peer pressure to also imbibe for expats. At any rate as they say here 'up to you'. 555.

The problem of filling your time in a healthy and fruitful way when you retire exists wherever you end up living. It's arguably easier to end up drinking too much during retirement in the UK because half the year the weather keeps you inside. If you can't work out things to do at home it's unlikely you'll change if you move elsewhere.

I live in Bangkok and spend 75 percent of my time writing my book, caring for my pets and socializing with my neighbors. The other 25 percent of my time I like to travel, check out downtown and Chinatown and enjoy the nightlife. Good luck Eddy and hope it all works out for you. I like being busy myself and I don't think I could pull off being retired just yet as I think I'd miss working and a bit of hustle. Too bad it takes so long to get to SE Asia, if it was under 6 hours I'd go for a couple of months twice a year. But unfortunately it's a hike from here in Canada to BKK

I too spend a fair bit of time during the day in the bars, but usually drinking coffee or soda water, just watching time and life go by, been traveling there for 15 years and have learnt to find things to do, I'd say I might have a few quiet beers each week. maybe a Bender once every couple of months.

hi eddy i dont often comment but in my opinion being in the bars is something i would hope to do for my first few weeks as a holiday, then settle into a lifestyle routine, a hobby or pastime away from the bars is a must which one is up to you and your budget golfing 2 or 3 times a week can be expensive and walking on the beach is free, most people will be in a condo as opposed to a house they own, so there is no garden or maintenance as most people would have outside pattaya, having social interaction is a must for some people and solo life is for others , there are pool dart and quiz teams but they are in bars of an evening, getting out of the late night drinking is also a must as late nights mean sleeping day time, get up make your bed shower and breakfast sets your mind in the right direction, then something to do, laundry, exercise or read a book by the pool but do something, out of your condo. you will meet like minded people at the places or things you do most are regular people doing regular things at regular times, getting out of holiday mode is probably the most important thing to do, cheers and thanks for sharing

Good morning brother I am in the Philippines now retired and I love your topic today because I’ve seen the same things here and you gotta have a plan when I came here I didn’t really have a plan just to kick back and enjoy life and I don’t drink I don’t hang out at bars and it seems like a lot of times. I just kind of chill out at home, so making a plan is an excellent idea and I’m so glad you finally retired and came to Thailand. Good luck enjoy your retirement brother excellent job on the drinking. Have fun.

I know we don’t come to Thailand to watch TV, but a firestick with an IPTV that gives access to virtually every station in the world and 10000s of films and series on demand is a must for me and cost about £50 a year. So handy if you can’t sleep and want to watch familiar TV or want to watch a sporting event you’re interested in, or in Eddies case instant access to about 10000 films

" alcoholic" simply means to be dependent on alcohol.....once you no longer drink alcohol its really not advisable to give yourself this label in my opinion....just say " I don't drink".
It's the same with drug users who say " I'm an addict"...the word comes from the Latin meaning to be enslaved....but of course once you no longer use drugs then by definition you are no longer enslaved.
Another thing people say is " I've had a relapse" 😂.......which is nonsense....you choose to drink or use drugs....its happens by you...not to you.

Having lived in Thailand full time for 10 years ,you do need a hobby .I had a few , Gardening ,house /flat renovation and and tinkering around with motorcycles .Brining my 2 Lab dogs for walks was another .As regards changing money you should have a Thai bank a/c by now .Then you can use a CO. such as Wise ( formally Transfer wise ) to send money directly and immediately from the UK on line to your Thai a/c at low cost .They are making it harder to open a Bank a/c on a Tourist visa but a visa agent can do it for you for a fee of B5k ....About your quote that >its a long day to get through when your retired < I found it the opposite .I found the days too short for what i needed to get done . PS ,i hate Sports especially Golf .

Previously a tourist, now retired in Pattaya, I spend my days by walking (21km in one day is my record), gym, reading, learning Thai and Spanish, sudoku, lying in the sun by the pool and swimming at my condo, watching a bit of TV. A big night out 3/4 times a week.

"miserable old bastard" brilliant 😂😂😂 I have been that for fecking years.
You are definitely right about the alcohol when you retire anywhere around the world it's too easy to turn to the beer in an afternoon to get rid of the boredom of doing nothing.
Me personally if I retired to Pattaya or anywhere around Thailand I would go back to school and learn to read, write and speak Thai for a starter I would look at taking up gardening there's nothing better than fresh veg and fruit from your own garden.
I can't wait to retire to Thailand I'm not a city boy I like the peace and quiet of village life I would go to Pattaya or places like it as summer holiday getting very drunk every night then going back home and living the village life style.

In relation to everything you have said no matter how much you keep busy it is extremely difficult to not drink cold ales pretty regularly. You have proved you’re not an alcoholic not because you didn’t drink for 9 months but the fact you are able to have a few beers without getting smashed but be warned your mental health will not benefit by waking up every morning regretting and feeling guilty you had a few beers yesterday.

Eddie, having looked at your 10 pound note, it is a new polymer note and thankfully not a paper note. Try the following with a water damp cloth with a small amount of liquid soap on it. Gently rub the number written in ball point pen or felt tip and you may find surprisingly, that it will remove the ball point pen/felt tip ink, (it may take more than 1 attempt). If it was an old paper note you would be knackered from the off. Please let me know how you go with my advice. Cheers Aussie1, Perth, Western Australia. "The Famous Five Get Creative"--- to remove ink from a Polymer Bank Note. (We have had polymer notes for many years in Oz. Infact, The Bank of England purchased our Polymer technology).

Everyday I exercise, haven’t been to a bar for the 4 years I’ve been here, except when a friend came for a short visit. Pratamnak is home for me now, have a Thai girlfriend for company. We do the normal things together that you would do anywhere! Meet up with expats at a restaurant, it’s a great group, some have been living here over 25 years. Love to play Badminton, another group of around 16 or so regularly. Then there’s the gym, different set of people again. Still love to travel around SE Asia. Though recently it’s just Thailand, that’s about every 3 months. Always something to do, keeping active is more important as we get older! As for music I keep in touch with You Tubbers in the vinyl community. Will be meeting one or two who will be coming to Thailand! Oh and where I live there’s a massive swimming pool, use it at least 3 times a weeks, love it!
