  • (Temporary) Movie Monday! We have officially made it through our sixth straight Star Wars movie! What a streak! (Now say that five times fast). Revenge of the Sith was a strong way to finish the prequel trilogy, and it was a fun, meme-worthy experience. Sure we poked fun at it, but I promise, the mocking is all in good fun, and I will voice my unpopular opinion...I liked Hayden Christensen. I think he did exactly the job he was given, and he looked great doing it (at least since he got rid of the tiny pony tail). I'm now really curious to watch the Clone Wars, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the seemingly endless list of Star Wars IP that is apparently necessary to round out my fandom knowledge. Stay tuned to see if I make it! May the Force be with you! ❤️Jacqui

That's not entirely true about lack of planning for 6 films. George DID have an idea about how Vader became Vader. That is why A New Hope was eventually numbered #4. He didn't have it written, but a loose idea.

Ya that's sort of correct, except George kept flip-flopping his ideas. The original script for Empire Strikes Back, Anakin and Vader were two different people, which means Obi-Wan's words to Luke in A New Hope about Vader killing his father were true at that point.

It does make sense, to a point, with Anakin. He's been traumatized his whole life, then he finds out he's the chosen one. Everybody hypes him up, and then he's constantly told the things he did wrong. Then someone praises him and acts like a father figure and says all the right things; it's not that hard to see. Plus, the Jedi have been hypocrites in his eyes. They left his mother in slavery. They've been doing things they've told him not to do. Had the Jedi tried to heal his mind and maybe saved his mom, there wouldn't have been as much fuel to go down the path of the Dark Side quite so easily.

It’s not that Jedi can’t use blasters, it’s that lightsabers were designed to be defensive weapons.
Sending Jedi to kill generals and participate in a war is already a major breach in Jedi ethics, which is relevant to the “hypocrisy of the Jedi” that the movie calls attention to

I enjoy sidious's campiness as a villain when he's revealed. Unlike Vader and tyrannous who became Sith for good intentions. Sidious is truly evil, and he enjoys being evil
Chancellor palpatine was a disguise for him which he hated putting on, he hated having to act nice to the public and the jedi who he despised. That's why when his plan finally works, he becomes emperor and the revenge of the Sith is executed. He's ecstatic, he can finally be his true self in the form of Darth Sidious instead of pretending go be sheev palpatine
Then in return of the jedi, he has everything that he wants. He rules the galaxy, the public fear him and love him, the jedi are extinct and to top it all off the supposed chosen one to destroy the Sith is his Sith apprentice

Only for a Jedi to still stand in his way and galactic domination.

It often strikes me how Anakin was blinded by love and the fear of loss. Literally minutes after Palpatine pleads: "I have the power to save the one you love!", he 'pivots' and says: ".... if we work together I know we can discover the secret."
Anakin either doesn't 'catch' the lie or doesn't care (blinded by fear of losing his wife). If it were up to me, I would have had Anakin 'turn' at that moment due to pure rage. ("You told me you HAVE the power! LIAR!") Et cetera.
So then there's a huge duel and Anakin is beaten down, forced into submission to Palpatine's will. That would go well with the moment he tells Luke years later: "You don't know the power of the Dark Side. I MUST obey my Master."

The prequels were criminally underrated, the people who reviewed this years ago are the now older generation. The kids who are now grown up bring a lot of attention to how good it actually is. It’s my favorite Star Wars movie along with Empire and Rogue One. Hayden’s acting was perfect considering he had no father figure he was taken away from his mother after he could become attached to her which is why Jedi are taught not to be attached. He then loses Qui Gon and his mother in violent fashion and Padme was another attachment he had before being told with the Jedi not to be attached with her. Palpatine ends up being a father figure he never had and what Obi-Wan should’ve been as opposed to a brother. Also I don’t think there were that many plot holes. Regarding Mace it makes sense he wants to kill Palpatine, palp was beyond evil and it’s technically hypocritical that Anakin said he should live since he killed Dooku in the same fashion. Also the 2nd Death Star wasn’t fully completed in the 6th movie that’s why they thought it wasn’t operational. Great reaction though 👍

As someone, who grew up with the original trilogy. I was critical of episodes 1&2. But this film was the best way to end the prequels.
It completes the saga perfectly. Not only does it shows the tragedy, of Anakin's downfall . But also the beauty of his redemption. His love for his wife caused him to fall. But the love for his son, saved him.

    • @leethasen
      @leethasen ปีที่แล้ว

Though Dooku was obviously 100% proven a leader of separatists and a war criminal. So there was a reason in executing him at the place during the battle mission. And the Palpatine's fault and his role in orchestrating the whole civil war still had to be proved at the moment when Mace tried to kill him. So there is a significant difference between Anakin's and Mace's actions.

I love the climactic lightsaber duel on Mustafar between Anakin and Obi-Wan. The music, the fight choreography, the special effects and the audio design were also top notch and hold up really well. It's supremely more tense than any of the other lightsaber duels. Also, the fight choreography between Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor is at real time. Not at all slowed down or sped up. They just got so good during rehearsals for the lightsaber duel, that they kept the speed of the movements in real time.

I mean, who hands the angry emo guy a laser sword?! Honestly! Heavy wool robes no less (seriously). Fun fact: The lava floes at the end were mostly a practical effect. They built something like a 30'x30' platform, tilted it by 10°. They then stacked up huge blocks of some kind of modelling foam that they shaped into the terrain. The platform had a clear bottom so they could put lights underneath, and then poured gallons of methacel which is normally a very pale orange, but when they lit it up with the lights, it had a nice reddish-orange glow to it.

I also liked at the end when Yoda and Obi-Wan were deciding where to hide Luke and Leia. Yoda suggests Luke goes to Tatooine and (in the book) Obi-Wan says that he'll stay on Tatooine as well to kinda look after Luke. Yoda asks "You mean like a father figure?" and Obi-Wan says "More like a crazy old uncle". I like those comments like that

A cool character around this time:
"As a Jedi, we were trained to be keepers of the peace, not soldiers. But all I've been since I was a Padawan is a soldier."
Anakin's lived experience is a total hypocrisy of the Jedi. But worse, he sees himself as the chosen won destined to kill the Sith and bring peace to the galaxy and, of course, he is correct.
This galaxy spanning war bringing so much suffering, every second it goes on is a personal failure of his.
And in the end he actually is the one that wins the clone wars and brings peace.
He only lost everything including himself to achieve this partial victory.

The premonitions where the very act of trying to prevent a premonition is exactly what causes the premonition to be fulfilled. When it comes to premonitions, the very first question to ask is "should anything be done about it." Then just take things as they come and don't try to force things to happen.

Yes, I’d love to see your reaction to Clone Wars series!
Personally I think Star Wars is better as a tv series than it as movies because tv series allow Star Wars to take their time in telling stories whereas the films do feel like either they introduce things that we don’t get any resolution to or they rush through situations or character developments that if it has been a series would have felt more natural. It’s one of the reasons I like the fan theory that the films are just R2D2 or some other droid telling us about what happened. A droid would rush passed moments that built romance or skip over moments that helped build friendships and just get to the important moments. We see this when AI are asked to write scripts/screenplays/books whereby it skips over the kinds of things a human writer would want to develop and give more to it. I know that Lucas wanted to keep the film’s run times limited and by naming the original sequel Episode 5 thus making the original film Episode 4 he basically locked himself into the prequel films having to be a trilogy. Though technically I feel like they could have done like some shows whereby they label some episodes as part 1, part 2, part 3 but it’s the same number and fans would’ve been fine with it. As for the sequels, those didn’t have to be a trilogy except out of tradition. A friend of mine was just complaining about the lack of Star Wars films being made and the focus being more on tv/streaming series. I pointed out that other than the original films he didn’t like them and had said on multiple occasions he liked the tv/streaming series more because they feel more developed. He then asked what my point was and I replied: “You’re literally complaining that LucasFilm isn’t making the kind of content you claim to not like them to make while they announce yet more content you claim you like them making. Are you just trying to be unhappy?!” To be fair, I feel like I know or meet fans in other fandoms like that, too. Who seem to just want to be unhappy and so nit-pick whatever so they have some reason to complain. Seems strange to me considering I’m used to so many things I enjoy and am a fan of just abruptly getting cancelled or not getting a sequel (or having to wait almost two decades for a sequel with no indication any more are forthcoming) that I, for one, and thrilled for fans of things I’m not a fan of who do get more of the things they love. And I’m willing to take whatever I get of the things I love because for a long time there wasn’t anything new really for fellow fans to enjoy. Though admittedly I now find myself unable to keep up with all the entertainment industry is pumping out, both things I’m a longtime fan of as well as new stuff being introduced. We are literally living in a time when there’s no shortage of entertainment of any kind of medium: films, tv series, music, video games, books, etc, etc, etc. What a fun time to be alive!!!
Space Peace: the branch of LucasFilm that tells stories from the Star Wars universe that’s about the times in its history when solutions were solved without violence. I can see a promo ad now: “In a time before there were battles between armies, there were battles in the Senate. Senators wield words as they strive for victory at trying to get their bills out of committees and before the full Senate for a vote. Meanwhile, Jedi diplomats help resolve disputes peacefully between peoples and assist the galactic judiciary at dispensing justice.” And basically episodes are a mixture of political intrigue, ambassadorial negotiations, and court trials.
“Pick up a guitar not a gun.” I kinda want Star Wars to have an emo character who has a similarly sad back story as Anakin who plays some Star Wars equivalent to a guitar and performs in venues across the galaxy. I think the character, if LucasFilm were to do it, should be named by you both out of honor of coming up with the idea. Maybe his like famous slogan could be “pick up a (name of instrument) not a blaster.” That or introduce the character in a series as an Alan-a-Dale type character similar to Alan-a-Dale in Disney’s Robin Hood. :-)
Great video! Thanks for making it! Also love that we got a quick reference to Emperor’s New Groove and got some Eddie Izzard a la LEGOs as well. I remember watching those LEGO videos some years ago and enjoying them. The only thing I kinda wish Star Wars would do is have a Pink Five. I loved watching the fanmade Star Wars Pink Five videos. I think she needs to become canon!

I think you both touched on this, especially Sam, but I think the biggest problem with these prequels writing was it didn't fully commit to the anti-hero. I get to do the things necessary and to really make Anakin/Vader a great anti-hero would be extremely difficult for such a mainstream, "family" series coming out late 90s/early 00s, and probably impossible given how many executives, lawyers, marketing teams, etc. would be looking after/have a say in the production. Just watching back on these, I think if the writing was going to be right, Vader should have been more of a Michael Corleone, Daniel Plainview, heck even Han Solo. We know they are arrogant, self-serving, and sometimes, maybe evil but they're such interesting, entertaining characters we can accept it.

    • @Filimaua13
      @Filimaua13 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I agree. Anakin in the prequels never felt like Vader at all. The seeds were there such as his motivations and his negative traits of clinging to personal attachments and lack of acceptance with death and loss, but it wasn't executed well. Vader was cold, intimidating, intelligent and in control. Something Anakin never really showed himself to be in the prequel trilogy. The comparison to Michael Corleone fits the most and should have been the template for Anakin's character arc.
Both characters started out as men who wanted nothing more than to live a normal life but through circumstances out of their control were brought into a way of life they didn't desire but accepted anyway in order to protect their loved ones. Both endured war and hardships which turned them cold and emotionally distant. Betrayals and constant threats to their loved ones turned them into paranoid individuals desperate for power and control. But through their quest for power to protect and ensure they don't lose their loved ones.. they became cruel, fueled with hate and lost everything, ending up totally alone.
I would have been fine if Anakin was only wide-eyed, naive, emotional, and reckless in episode 1. Would've been a better and more consistent character arc connecting Anakin to Vader if throughout the trilogy he becomes more calm, calcuating and ruthless. The desperation to bring an end to a devastating war and the fear of losing a wife and unborn children are excellent motivations for a hero to become a villain.

In the Republic, Dark Red is the coulour of Constitutional Duty, the Jedi's ship in Ep 1 was a Republic ship with no weapons. Lucas took that purple Red as a reminder of Roman and Byzantine Emperors.
Dude, of course Jedi are not supposed to use blasters, why do you think Obi Wan says "so uncivilized..." afterwards? That's why the line is funny. Why would it bother fans?
You wanted to see the Jedi at their height? That's what Qui Gon Jinn was supposed to represent.
Windu as an executioner? Excuse me; despite the hypocrisy, he's technically right, Palpatine had control of every Republican organ, did you think that he would have left himself be arrested and convicted of treason and imprisoned (unless it served his goal but that close to it?) ? I tend to think that the Jedi phylosophy stops to apply once the Sith are involved. Palpatine had to be killed one way or another. Windu was a jerk and Jedi became arrogant but Palpatine also did everything he could to sneak upon them until the very last moment when he had them at his mercy. Jedi were reckless and arrogant but you got to give credit to Palpatine for his cunning as well. Reacting to that the Jedi pretty much had no other choice and it was in Windu's intentions to put Palpatine to trial at first he refused to comply, from that moment on, it was off to be executed. Despite his flaws, I can't possibly believe Windu would have taken over the Republic as a supreme leader especially with Yoda at his side.
So I don't see the problem.

The novelization suggests that wrinkly Palpatine was his true self and the younger, fit-for-the-public-eye face was a ‘mask’ he wore using the force. When his force lightning reflected back on him it destroyed the façade and revealed his true self, wrinkled and corrupted by the dark side. At the very least, the eyes were definitely something he was able to change, since one of the hallmarks of the Sith is yellow eyes.
This is why I don’t think Dooku/Tyrannus was an actual Sith. He never had the yellow eyes. He may have worked with Palpatine/Sidious but he was never anything more than a tool.

I agree with you 100% Jacqui. Also, there actually were some people, at the time this movie came out, who were genuinely shocked that Palpatine and Sidious were the same person. I wasn't because, even though the novels coming out at the time, including the Episode I novelization, tried to make it look like Palpatine and Sidious were separate people, I had figured it out the first time I saw The Phantom Menace, in theatres. For three very simple reasons. 1) they dress exactly alike, 2) Sidious had influence within the Senate, which he couldn't've had if he wasn't a senator, and 3) the structure of Sidious's jaw poking out of his hood was exactly the same as Palpatine's in Return of the Jedi.
Also, I would like to point something out about Padme. I loved her in Episode I because Leia is one of my favourite characters in the Original Trilogy, and Padme reminded me of her, and I was disappointed that Lucas had sidelined her in Episode III and kept her there just so she could give birth to Luke and Leia. Excuse me, but Leia is pregnant with twins in the Legends novels, and she's kicking all kinds of Imperial butt the whole time. But George sucks as a writer and didn't bother to have someone else tighten the script. Especially since Padme was supposed to be involved in a subplot cut from the movie, where she and Senator Organa (Leia's stepdad) helped to form a group of senators who were opposed to Palpatine's subverting of the constitution, which led to what would eventually become the Rebel Alliance.

@11:35, Remember, "Any crash you can walk away from is a good crash!" - Launchpad McQuack, DuckTales (1987).
@14:05, To be fair to Yoda, people often confuse jealousy and envy. Jealousy is fear of loss. In this situation, Yoda is saying that the fear of losing Padme will lead to Anakin acting, or not acting, to prevent that loss. He needs to focus on the situation as it is, not what he fears the results might be. Anakin's failure to understand this distinction is what leads to his downfall.
@18:45, This is really subtle, but an apology admits fault while saying you're sorry is a feeling. If a person is sincere, both are good. If not, as appears to be the case here, Anakin is basically saying that he admits to his faults, but doesn't think he was wrong.

46:36, Mace Windu was taking action as a Jedi master. In an age of war, one must do whatever means to stay alive. This holds true in the case of the Jedi order. Many of the Top members of the Jedi Council, such as Mace Windu, already sensed an imminent threat to the orders survival. I think you two skipped over the scene in ROTS where the Jedi perceive a plot to destroy their order. In the briefing, they acknowledge the atomizing power that surrounds palpatine, and are adequately prepared to act on their intuition.

the symbolism in this movie is tremendous. the lava planet and ankinn burning is symbolic of anikin decending into hell.
    sidious is literally the devil.
shortly before that when anikin looks up at the sun and it is blocked out by the volcanic clouds. it is symbolic of the light side in anikin being blocked out by the dark side
you did notice 66 is short for 666
the fight in the senate destroying the pods and the room was symbolic of the govnerment being destoryed.
also, i don't know if either of you ever dealt with or had to deal with and learn a lot about covert narcisists. but sidious/palpatine is the ultimate covert narcissits and phsyocpath.
they are very highly manipultive people,
they are very charming in appearance,
    they groom you
they seeminly give you everything you wanted at first.
even when you know they are wrong you hold on to what you think yo hope, if they have froomed you enough.
and when his face chnaged, it was like the narc gonig into narc rage and their mask ocming off
in fact, satan/the deivl etc.. hwo lucas has indeed said he is the evil basicall. is literally the ultimate narc and phyopath. things to think about

    Hey Jacqui and Sam,
I do admit that the quality IS better in Episode 3 vs Episode 1 & 2, but Sam is correct in that there are SO many inconsistencies, plot holes, and retconning that made it still worst than the original 3, imo.
One of the worst ones that bugs me the most is the death of Padme after birth. This went against Leia's line in 6, "She died when I was very young.", it wasn't "She died when we were born. Why don't YOU remember?".
Now there are people that try to find loopholes and jump through hoops to try to explain it, when all Lucas needed to do was keep her alive but uncaring to her children. Depression could have led to eventual death, not eating, not exercising, just not caring to live.
But, nope, death on birthing table.
Have no opinion on Clone Wars, heard that it was good, never took the time to watch it all.
I'll have to wait till you get to the Disney take over to add any additional commentary. Won't say anything more till then. No spoilers from me! (And hopefully from no one else either...)

    • @mikeblatzheim2797

Do give Clone Wars a shot, it's some of the best Star Wars out there, and introduces some of the most fleshed-out characters. Depending on your tastes the first couple of seasons might not be to your liking, but even then the character development is good, and from season three onwards it gets properly excellent. Do make sure to watch it in chronological order though, as especially in the beginning it diverges significantly from the episode order.
As for Leia's statement, I assume that she was thinking about her adopted mother, Bail Organa's wife. Neither she nor Luke have been shown to be aware that Padme was their mother, and I also don't know wether she's aware that she's adopted.

    • @xThronex
      @xThronex ปีที่แล้ว

@@mikeblatzheim2797 when he asks her about her mother, he does specify 'your real mother'.
It's possible that Bail had at least 2 wives while she was growing up and Luke knew about that, but the implication I got from it was that they both knew she was adopted.

Also, once Palpatine fails to prevent Padme’s death why would Anakin still want to work with him?
