THOR LOVE & THUNDER is a FEVER DREAM | First Time Watching Reaction & Commentary

  • He went full Taika! I think that about sums up Thor: Love & Thunder 😂 Sam and I were very split on this one. I embraced the absurdity, and let it carry me away though the chaotic fever dream that is the mind of Taika Waititi. Sam however, like a lot of people I'm sure, found it to be draining more than anything else, which is fair. We all have different thresholds for ridiculousness, and this movie will definitely tell you where yours is! All in all, I think this worked well as a Marvel movie, because while it was OBVIOUSLY a Taika Waititi film, it still fit stylistically in the MCU, and that is a very tricky balance to strike. So whether you agree with me or Sam, we hope you found something to enjoy in this movie, and this reaction!

A good chunk of the weirdness is based in Norse mythology. Vikings flying around in space in a boat being dragged by goats on a rainbow bridge is actually a thing.

Denmark and Scandinavian "Space Viking" here. What a lot of Marvel fans seem to have missed is, that Thor seem to be a simpler and funnier character in most of this movie, because it's Korg who is the narrator, so everything except from the very "bleak" start and up until the last part, is presented through the mind and eyes of Korg, who not coincidentally is voiced and motion-captured by Taika Waititi himself. A fun fact, Thursday is actually also named after Nordic Mythology, with Thursday meaning "Thor's Day" and coincidentally, Chris Hemsworth was actually born on a Thursday (Thor's Day).

Wednesday is also named from Norse Mythology, after Odin. Friday after Odin's wife, Frigga. Tuesday for Tyr, Norse god of war/combat, who is sometimes referred to as a son of Odin and half-brother to Thor.

I'm able to enjoy this one because I interpret the images we see as what the children imagine as Korg is telling *his version* of the story, and not an accurate cinematic representation of these events. Otherwise, it's completely off the rails. It's like the Zucker Brothers spoof of a Thor movie.

I loved his reaction to the new Thor movie, and there is something that caught my attention... and that is when they said about the golden dust when Jane dies, and that golden dust represents the Gods, because he said this, Well, only the Gods can vanish like this, Odin died and vanished into golden dust, the god who killed Gorr at the beginning of the film too, only half censored, and Jane, despite being human, did die as a Goddess, Because the hammer chose her and when the hammer chooses a bearer, it automatically becomes the god of thunder, as happened with Jane.

  • @cirrustate8674

I am very much of the mind that we aren't seeing the events in this movie as they actually happened, but are instead seeing the dramatization of Korg's retelling of the events of the movie. Korg is a storyteller, and does embellish, so it fits. Just so you know, while the splits scene was very much an homage to Jean-Claude Van Damme, the spin kick in the next scene was ALSO an homage to Jean-Claude Van Damme, as that was a signature move he used in fight scenes. The goats are actually part of true Norse Mythology. They are Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder, and in actual Norse Myth, Thor doesn't fly but is pulled across the sky by those goats, so hitching them to the boat is a nod to that.

I read that Thor's new daughter is actually Chris's real daughter. And his son played you g Thor in the beginning of the movie and his brother portrayed Thor on the stage opposite Matt Damon. Also most of the kids in the movie were the children of the other actors in the movie also.

Thor and Jane's relationship was the best part of the movie for me. Mighty Thor was so awesome. I loved how much we got of Valkyrie, just wish we got more of Gorr. Christian Bale did such a fantastic job. Yes the third act was the best, so much more weight and intimate. I'm honestly excited to see more of Thor and Love. Chris Hemsworth's daughter did such an amazing job. The jokes went way far a bit and a lot was out of place, but overall I enjoyed this. You guys are so awesome! 🥰🙏🏾

I have to say, like Jacqui said this movie should be expected as a… not serious one, as a DC fan that comic series is actually something I’ve read, it is comic based and accurate, but the difference is that the tone in the comics are serious and engaging and horror and general theme of this kind of story, the goats are too much honestly and not in a good way, the story is way too short, you could add another full movie into it, some visuals had room to be watchable, but if you don’t expect much it can be fun, I love seeing you react to every bit of it, paying attention to details and adding your own knowledge to it, I’m really happy watching this with you❤️

To answer some of your questions:
Jane's arc is very similar to the comic run. Gorr's arc is very similar but ridiculously shortened, which is a shame considering how much I enjoyed Bale in the role. Gorr's sword in the comics is actually a Symbiotic god called Knull, but since Sony owns the rights to movie depictions of Spider-man and Venom, they were able to prevent Taika from referencing that part of the character.
Thor does not have a daughter in the comics and fun fact, she's actually played by Hemsworth's IRL daughter here.

Close to the comics or not, I was hugely disappointed by this movie. Ragnarok actually brought a much needed energy and fun into Thor movie, and actually gave him an arc that continued into Infinity war and End game. While there was humor, the stakes were impactful as well
Love and Thunder was force fit with so much humor that it felt like a parody. The stakes felt nothing because of the obsessive need for a tongue-in-cheek remark. Bale's performance needed more screen time and a better story.
This kind of a treatment is fine for a 1st or even 2nd installment in a franchise, but it's the 4th stand alone and 8th appearance of Thor. It felt so pointless. I can never connect to a movie that compromises character arcs for some silly jokes. The entire Zeus part of the movie was borderline ridiculous
