- Joan Baez sings 'Mary Hamilton' from her self-titled 1960 Vanguard album. This song, perhaps the most popular folk ballad (Child #173), originated in Scotland in the 1500s. Mary Hamilton, an attendant to the Queen, is to be executed for casting her baby by the King of Scots out to sea. Its possible historical antecedents are not clear, but Baez' version places it in Glasgow with the king called the "highest Stuart of all". Though finding images for the people, places, and actions of such a song is problematic, the emotion of the woman's narrative on her impending doom and the quiet, but intense, feeling of Baez' singing likely overcome any failings. The song is also known as 'The Four Marys' and has been recorded by Peggy Seeger, Robin Roberts, and others.
Voice of an Angel. Person who exemplified in her life the voice that was gifted to her, developed through hard work, and bestowed on a generation which could record it and remember her through the years.
Where was the baby gone ?
been a fan of hers for 60 years........ever since I first heard her so long ago
Same here, i first heard Joan in 63 and her voice still moves me.
I'm the toughest guy I know, because I can make it to just before the first chorus without crying.
Sad Scottish story
Beautiful. My father, who loved all things beautiful, pointed out to me the beauty of Joan Baez' voice.
So did mine
Amazing Lass.
That's the first time I've ever heard it.
Thanks again.
Lol and
I am from Hamilton Scotland

And have been all my life 57 year old guitarist
And that's the first iv heard it. 🎸😁
My Dad’s favorite woman singer. He just loved her voice.
And he always wanted to go see Scotland.
He loved the history and the culture of the Scots.
A more strong proud independent and passionate group the world has never seen.
My favorite singer too! She was the star oh my generation. Now I listen to Lorena McKennet, another voice to the heart.

Beautiful !
I will definitely check her out !!
Thanks So Much

I have ancestors from the Isle of Arran, which has close ties to the Hamiltons. I would love to go there sometime.
Lyrics:
Word is to the kitchen gone, and word is to the Hall
And word is up to Madam the Queen, and that's the worst of all
That Mary Hamilton has borne a babe
To the highest Stuart of all
Oh rise, arise Mary Hamilton
Arise and tell to me
What thou hast done with thy wee babe
I saw and heard weep by thee
I put him in a tiny boat
And cast him out to sea
That he might sink or he might swim
But he'd never come back to me
Oh rise arise Mary Hamilton
Arise and come with me
There is a wedding in Glasgow town
This night we'll go and see
She put not on her robes of black
Nor her robes of brown
But she put on her robes of white
To ride into Glasgow town
And as she rode into Glasgow town
The city for to see
The bailiff's wife and the provost's wife
Cried Alack and alas for thee
You need not weep for me she cried
You need not week for me
For had I not slain my own wee babe
This death I would not dee
Oh little did my mother think
When first she cradled me
The lands I was to travel in
And the death I was to dee
Last night I washed the Queen's feet
And put the gold in her hair
And the only reward I find for this
The gallows to be my share
Cast off cast off my gown she cried
But let my petticoat be
And tie a napkin round my face
The gallows I would not see
Then by them come the king himself
Looked up with a pitiful eye
Come down come down Mary Hamilton
Tonight you will dine with me
Oh hold your tongue my sovereign liege
And let your folly be
For if you'd a mind to save my life
You'd never have shamed me here
Last night there were four Mary's
Tonight there'll be but three
T'was Mary Beaton and Mary Seton
And Mary Carmichael and me.
I think it was the wedding Mary attended the infamous kirk o field murder....
Thank you 💖 ❤🎉
I'm Shehu, from Nigeria. Thanks for the lyrics. Thank you very much. Oh. We had education. First came across this beautiful poem in 1976 in my English Literature class.
This song is not a mere song but a sad mind-slashing and tragic epic with harmonious melody.
Beautiful. My grandad told me the meaning to this and it’s tragic. Lyrics are powerful in this
one of my faves
Lovely words n song.........
Very sad story 😢
beautiful such a clear voice
I think so that too.
Fantastic song/performance. Joan Baez amazing voice ... this is almost as good as the vs I knew 50 years ago as a child on an old 78rpm disc which was just unaccompanied voice. Would love to find out who by ... but that old record is long gone now.
Have to say however - that some of the visuals are well naff and don't suit this dark and beautiful song. But then that's just my opinion.
Thanks for uploading.
One of her bests. Goosebumps !
absolute perfection
So haunting.
Beautiful song

One of my favorites. Surely the original woman's cry against sexual harassment, the double standard, etc. etc.

So very sad.
Apparantly Bob Dylan used this tune as the template for His song The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Caroll.
No he didn't. The songs sound nothing alike. They are both great songs, and they both stand on their own.
@@johnshea4436 I agree but others have mentioned that there was a direct
link between the 2 songs......
Wikipedia
"The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" is a topical song written by the American musician Bob Dylan. Recorded on October 23, 1963, the song was released on Dylan's 1964 album The Times They Are a-Changin' and gives a generally factual account of the killing of a 51-year-old African-American barmaid, Hattie Carroll (March 3, 1911 - February 9, 1963), by then 24-year-old William Devereux "Billy" Zantzinger (February 7, 1939 - January 3, 2009), a young man from a wealthy white tobacco farming family in Charles County, Maryland, and of his subsequent sentence to six months in a county jail, after being convicted of assault.
The melody is largely taken from a folk song called ”Mary Hamilton”. The lyrics are a commentary on 1960s racism. When Carroll was killed in 1963, Charles County was still strictly segregated by race in public facilities such as restaurants, churches, theaters, doctor's offices, buses and the county fair. The schools of Charles County were not integrated until 1967.

@@thetrevorosborne That is true, Wikipedia does mention this. I think Wikipedia is wrong in this case. There is a whole wikipedia page about songs that Bob Dylan supposedly based on other songs. Some of them are correct (e.g. Bob Dylan's "Song For Woody" is almost identical musically to Woody Guthrie's "1913 Incident", with new words); some of them are specious, in my opinion.
@@johnshea4436 I think the early songs melody wise fall into 2 categories
1 songs which are straight copies of a older melody (eg masters of war ,
with God on our Side etc ) then there are songs while obviously influenced by older sources are more creative adaptations examples being Hard Rain /Blowin In The Wind /Girl From The North Country. I think by Blonde on Blonde Dylan composing abilities had developed to the point where older sources were no longer relied on so much
Like everything else the old fraud did. He stole it.
You should show Joan Baez' album cover when Ms. Baez is singing. Your own photo is inappropriate.

Another scottish tragedy.
It’s a 16th century fictional ballad
@@jimmymacGoa Been one of my favourite songs for 70 years and this is the very best version I've ever heard. The facts confirm your statement: though: Fact 1 - Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded in 1587, but had four Marys -
Fact 2 - Mary Hamilton was potted by a King and after being convicted of drowning the kid, was beheaded 1719 - If she was indeed one of the four Mary's, she would have been around 150yo then, probably a wee bit old to be having a kid.
You can't let facts get in the way of a great story
@@mitchellbill103 It happened in Russia, there was a Mary Hamilton who was mistress of the tsar and lady in waiting to the Tsarina. So its not even a Scottish story
