I married my wife Barbara in 1969, mainly because she looked like Joan Baez and I looked like Bob Dylan (and played songs from both of them, and I still do: those two, plus Leonard, have been the sound-track of our lives). The first gift Barbara ever got me was a pair of cuff-links. We saw Joan live at the Cambridge Folk Festival in 1982, and we saw her at the Fare Thee Well concert in London in 2019, and a couple more in between. Every time Joan sings "Diamonds and Rust", she updates the years in line with our marriage, so in 2019 it was "Fifty years ago I bought you some cuff-links". We felt it was just for us.
Some things have improved, some things haven't, some things have got worse. It's amazing the amount of people who have died, been institutionalized, and been imprisoned for the ideals of freedom and liberty and love and others have lived independently and free. Surely the Holy Spirit will set us all free and love us all eventually.😊
Had a lucky life: in 62-63 served in the USAF at Mather AFB, Sacramento Ca and got many open-weekends to go to all the SFO concerts and Purple Onion shows I could. Joan Baez was a high note for all those occasions and still is. That you Joan Baez for filling our lives with your wonderful being and voice.

21:14 The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down Virgil Caine is my name and I drove on the Danville train 'Til so much cavalry came and tore up the tracks again In the winter of '65, we were hungry, just barely alive I took the train to Richmond that fell It was a time I remember, oh, so well The night they drove old Dixie down And all the bells were ringin' The night they drove old Dixie down And all the people were singin' They went, "Na, na, na, na, na, na..." Back with my wife in Tennessee And one day she said to me, "Virgil, quick! Come see! There goes Robert E. Lee." Now I don't mind, I'm chopping wood And I don't care if the money's no good Just take what you need and leave the rest But they should never have taken the very best The night they drove old Dixie down And all the bells were ringin' The night they drove old Dixie down And all the people were singin' They went, "Na, na, na, na, na, na..." Like my father before me, I'm a working man And like my brother before me, I took a rebel stand Oh, he was just eighteen, proud and brave But a yankee laid him in his grave I swear by the blood below my feet You can't raise a Cane back up when he's in defeat The night they drove old Dixie down And all the bells were ringin' The night they drove old Dixie down And all the people were singin' They went, "Na, na, na, na, na, na..." 24:36 The River in the Pines Oh, Mary was a maiden When the birds began to sing. She was sweeter than the blooming rose So early in the spring. Her thoughts were gay and happy And the morning gay and fine, For her lover was a river boy From the river in the pines. Now Charlie, he got married To his Mary in the spring When the trees were budding early And the birds began to sing. But early in the autumn When the fruit is in the wine, I'll return to you, my darling From the river in the pines. It was early in the morning In Wisconsin's dreary clime When he rode the fatal rapids For that last and fatal time. They found his body lying On the rocky shore below Where the silent water ripples And the whispering cedars blow. Now every raft of lumber That comes down the Chippewa, There's a lonely grave that's Visited by drivers on their way They plant wild flowers upon it In the morning fair and fine. 'Tis the grave of two young lovers From the river in the pines 28:10 The House of the Rising Sun There is a house in New Orleans They call the Rising Sun It has been the ruin of many a poor girl And me, oh, God, I'm one If I had listened to what my mother said, I`d have been at home today, But I was young and foolish, oh, God Let a rambler lead me astray Go tell my baby sisters Don't do what I have done To shun that house in New Orleans They call the rising sun And going back to New Orleans My race is almost run I'm going back to spend my life Beneath the rising sun 31:03 Mary Hamilton Word is to the kitchen gone And word is to the hall And word is up to Madam the Queen And that's the worst of all That Mary Hamilton's borne a babe To the highest Stuart of all "Arise, arise, Mary Hamilton Arise and tell to me What thou hast done with thy wee babe I saw and heard weep by thee" "I put him in a tiny boat And cast him out to sea That he might sink or he might swim But he'd never come back to me" "Arise, arise, Mary Hamilton Arise and come with me There is a wedding in Glasgow town This night we'll go and see" She put not on her robes of black Nor her robes of brown But she put on her robes of white To ride into Glasgow town And as she rode into Glasgow town The city for to see The bailiff's wife and the provost's wife Cried alack and alas for thee "Oh you need not weep for me," she cried "You need not weep for me" For had I not slain my own wee babe This death I would not lead Oh, little did my mother think When first she cradled me The lands I was to travel in And the death I was to dee Last night I washed the queen's feet Put the gold in her hair And the only reward I find for this The gallows to be my share "Cast off, cast off my gown," she cried "But let my petticoat be And tie a napkin round my face The gallows, I would not see" Then by them come the king himself Looked up with a pitiful eye "Come down, come down, Mary Hamilton Tonight, you will dine with me" "Oh hold your tongue, my sovereign liege And let your folly be For if you'd a mind to save my life You'd never have shamed me here" Last night there were four Marys Tonight there'll be but three It was Mary Beaton and Mary Seton And Mary Carmichael and me 36:58 Banks of the Ohio I asked my love to take a walk, To take a walk, just a little walk, Down beside where the waters flow, Down by the banks of the Ohio And only say that you'll be mine In no others arms entwine, Down beside where the waters flow, Down by the banks of the Ohio I held a knife against her breast, And into my arms she pressed, She cried, "Oh Willie, don't murder me I'm not prepared for eternity." And only say that you'll be mine In no others' arms entwine Down beside where the waters flow Down by the banks of Ohio I started home 'tween twelve and one I cried, "My God, what have I done? I've killed the only woman I loved, Because she would not be my bride," And only say that you'll be mine In no others' arms entwine Down beside where the waters flow Down by the banks of Ohio 39:38 Little Moses Away by the waters so blue The ladies were winding their way While Pharaoh's little daughter went down to the water To bathe in the cool of the day Before it was dark she opened the ark And found the sweet babe that was there And away by the waters so blue The infant was lonely and sad She took him in pity and thought him so pretty And it made little Moses so glad She called him her own, her beautiful son And she sent for a nurse who was near And away by the waters so blue They carried that beautiful child To his tender mother, to his sister and brothers Little Moses looked happy and smiled His mother so good did all that she could To raise him and teach him with care And away by the sea that was red Little Moses the servant of God While in him confided, the sea was divided As upwards he lifted his rod And the Jews safely crossed while Pharaoh's host Was drowned in the waters and lost And away on a mountain so high The last that he ever did see With Israel victorious, his hopes were most glorious That soon all the Jordan be free When his spirit did cease, he departed in peace And rested in the Heavens above

I'm white, English, 6 goot 5, work as a plasterer, have tattoos, drink lager, and swear in pubs. And Joan Baez is my all time favourite artist. She gets played everywhere i go and especially at work. Funny the people you meet eh ?
This is probably a general problem with humans: they are too narrow-minded and many of the species don't like learning new things. They would rather vegetate in their comfortably furnished swamp than think outside the box or question themselves.
Sebagai pewaris musik dunia saya mengenal Joan Baez sekitar THN 1970 akhir/1980 an lewat lagu: Dona-dona.
This is a more than nice collection. No Dylan songs though, except for Forever Young, only Joan's bitter-sweet tribute to their friendship. But say there, wasn't The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down written by a former band member of Dylan's, Robbie Robertson?
I married my wife Barbara in 1969, mainly because she looked like Joan Baez and I looked like Bob Dylan (and played songs from both of them, and I still do: those two, plus Leonard, have been the sound-track of our lives). Joan Baez! Forever in my heart...

Well I'll be damned
Here comes your ghost again
But that's not unusual
It's just that the moon is full
And you happened to call
And here I sit
Hand on the telephone
Hearing a voice I'd known
A couple of light years ago
Heading straight for a fall
As I remember your eyes
Were bluer than robin's eggs
My poetry was lousy you said
Where are you calling from?
A booth in the midwest
Ten years ago
I bought you some cufflinks
You brought me something
We both know what memories can bring
They bring diamonds and rust
Well you burst on the scene
Already a legend
The unwashed phenomenon
The original vagabond
You strayed into my arms
And there you stayed
Temporarily lost at sea
The Madonna was yours for free
Yes the girl on the half-shell
Could keep you unharmed
Now I see you standing
With brown leaves falling all around
And snow in your hair
Now you're smiling out the window
Of that crummy hotel
Over Washington Square
Our breath comes out white clouds
Mingles and hangs in the air
Speaking strictly for me
We both could have died then and there
Now you're telling me
You're not nostalgic
Then give me another word for it
You who are so good with words
And at keeping things vague
'Cause I need some of that vagueness now
It's all come back too clearly
Yes I loved you dearly
And if you're offering me diamonds and rust
I've already paid

Stop complaining, said the farmer
Who told you a calf to be?
Why donв you have wings to fly with
Like the swallow so proud and free
How the winds are laughing
They laugh with all their might
Laugh and laugh the whole day through
And half the summers night
Dona-dona-do-o-na-do-o-o-ona
Dona-dona-do-o-na-do-o-o-on
Dona-dona-do-o-na-do-o-o-ona
Dona-dona-do-o-na-do-o-o-on
Calves are easily bound and slaughtered
Never knowing the reason why
But whoever treasures freedom
Like the swallow has learned to fly
How the winds are laughing
They laugh with all their might
Laugh and laugh the whole day through
And half the summers night
Dona-dona-do-o-na-do-o-o-ona
Dona-dona-do-o-na-do-o-o-on
Dona-dona-do-o-na-do-o-o-ona
Dona-dona-do-o-na-do-o-o-on

Forever Young
May God's bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung
May you stay
forever young
May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong
May you stay
forever young
Forever young
Forever young
May you stay
forever young
May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful
May your song always be sung
And may you stay
forever young
Forever young
Forever young
May you stay
forever young

Guantanamera
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
Guantaname-e-ra, guajira Guantanam-e-era
Yo soy un hombre sincero
De donde crece la palma
Yo soy un hombre sincero
De donde crece la palma
Y antes de morirme quiero
Echar mis versos del alma
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
Guantaname-e-ra, guajira Guantanam-e-era
Mi verso es de un verde claro
Y de un carmin encenidido
Mi verso es de un verde claro
Y de un carmin encenidido
Mi verso es un ciervo herido
Que busca en el monte amparo
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
Guantaname-e-ra, guajira Guantanam-e-era
Con los pobres de la tierra
Quiero yo mi suerte echar
Con los pobres de la tierra
Quiero yo mi suerte echar
El arroyo de la sierra
Me complace mas que el mar
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
Guantaname-e-ra, guajira Guantanam-e-era
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
Guantaname-e-ra, guajira Guantanam-e-era
[faded]
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
Guantaname-e-ra, guajira Guantanam-e-era
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
Guantaname-e-ra, guajira Guantanam-e-era

Only Heaven Knows
Seems we've been to heaven darling
Ah the sad wind blows
But I have lost my way my darling
Tell me how it goes
While the mist is rising darling
Ah the sad wind blows
Tell me how we met my darling
Tell me all you know
Well I am somewhat older darling
Ah the sad wind blows
And you are so much younger darling
That's the way it goes
And we looked so good together
Ah the sad wind blows
Out of all the summer flowers
I had picked the rose
Take me in your arms my darling
While the sad wind blows
Tell me that this pain will leave me
Tell me how it goes
Ah if this pain should ever leave me
Only heaven knows
21:14
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
Virgil Caine is my name and I drove on the Danville train
'Til so much cavalry came and tore up the tracks again
In the winter of '65, we were hungry, just barely alive
I took the train to Richmond that fell
It was a time I remember, oh, so well
The night they drove old Dixie down
And all the bells were ringin'
The night they drove old Dixie down
And all the people were singin'
They went, "Na, na, na, na, na, na..."
Back with my wife in Tennessee
And one day she said to me,
"Virgil, quick! Come see!
There goes Robert E. Lee."
Now I don't mind, I'm chopping wood
And I don't care if the money's no good
Just take what you need and leave the rest
But they should never have taken the very best
The night they drove old Dixie down
And all the bells were ringin'
The night they drove old Dixie down
And all the people were singin'
They went, "Na, na, na, na, na, na..."
Like my father before me, I'm a working man
And like my brother before me, I took a rebel stand
Oh, he was just eighteen, proud and brave
But a yankee laid him in his grave
I swear by the blood below my feet
You can't raise a Cane back up when he's in defeat
The night they drove old Dixie down
And all the bells were ringin'
The night they drove old Dixie down
And all the people were singin'
They went, "Na, na, na, na, na, na..."
24:36
The River in the Pines
Oh, Mary was a maiden
When the birds began to sing.
She was sweeter than the blooming rose
So early in the spring.
Her thoughts were gay and happy
And the morning gay and fine,
For her lover was a river boy
From the river in the pines.
Now Charlie, he got married
To his Mary in the spring
When the trees were budding early
And the birds began to sing.
But early in the autumn
When the fruit is in the wine,
I'll return to you, my darling
From the river in the pines.
It was early in the morning
In Wisconsin's dreary clime
When he rode the fatal rapids
For that last and fatal time.
They found his body lying
On the rocky shore below
Where the silent water ripples
And the whispering cedars blow.
Now every raft of lumber
That comes down the Chippewa,
There's a lonely grave that's
Visited by drivers on their way
They plant wild flowers upon it
In the morning fair and fine.
'Tis the grave of two young lovers
From the river in the pines
28:10
The House of the Rising Sun
There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
It has been the ruin of many a poor girl
And me, oh, God, I'm one
If I had listened to what my mother said,
I`d have been at home today,
But I was young and foolish, oh, God
Let a rambler lead me astray
Go tell my baby sisters
Don't do what I have done
To shun that house in New Orleans
They call the rising sun
And going back to New Orleans
My race is almost run
I'm going back to spend my life
Beneath the rising sun
31:03
Mary Hamilton
Word is to the kitchen gone
And word is to the hall
And word is up to Madam the Queen
And that's the worst of all
That Mary Hamilton's borne a babe
To the highest Stuart of all
"Arise, arise, Mary Hamilton
Arise and tell to me
What thou hast done with thy wee babe
I saw and heard weep by thee"
"I put him in a tiny boat
And cast him out to sea
That he might sink or he might swim
But he'd never come back to me"
"Arise, arise, Mary Hamilton
Arise and come with me
There is a wedding in Glasgow town
This night we'll go and see"
She put not on her robes of black
Nor her robes of brown
But she put on her robes of white
To ride into Glasgow town
And as she rode into Glasgow town
The city for to see
The bailiff's wife and the provost's wife
Cried alack and alas for thee
"Oh you need not weep for me," she cried
"You need not weep for me"
For had I not slain my own wee babe
This death I would not lead
Oh, little did my mother think
When first she cradled me
The lands I was to travel in
And the death I was to dee
Last night I washed the queen's feet
Put the gold in her hair
And the only reward I find for this
The gallows to be my share
"Cast off, cast off my gown," she cried
"But let my petticoat be
And tie a napkin round my face
The gallows, I would not see"
Then by them come the king himself
Looked up with a pitiful eye
"Come down, come down, Mary Hamilton
Tonight, you will dine with me"
"Oh hold your tongue, my sovereign liege
And let your folly be
For if you'd a mind to save my life
You'd never have shamed me here"
Last night there were four Marys
Tonight there'll be but three
It was Mary Beaton and Mary Seton
And Mary Carmichael and me
36:58
Banks of the Ohio
I asked my love to take a walk,
To take a walk, just a little walk,
Down beside where the waters flow,
Down by the banks of the Ohio
And only say that you'll be mine
In no others arms entwine,
Down beside where the waters flow,
Down by the banks of the Ohio
I held a knife against her breast,
And into my arms she pressed,
She cried, "Oh Willie, don't murder me
I'm not prepared for eternity."
And only say that you'll be mine
In no others' arms entwine
Down beside where the waters flow
Down by the banks of Ohio
I started home 'tween twelve and one
I cried, "My God, what have I done?
I've killed the only woman I loved,
Because she would not be my bride,"
And only say that you'll be mine
In no others' arms entwine
Down beside where the waters flow
Down by the banks of Ohio
39:38
Little Moses
Away by the waters so blue
The ladies were winding their way
While Pharaoh's little daughter went down to the water
To bathe in the cool of the day
Before it was dark she opened the ark
And found the sweet babe that was there
And away by the waters so blue
The infant was lonely and sad
She took him in pity and thought him so pretty
And it made little Moses so glad
She called him her own, her beautiful son
And she sent for a nurse who was near
And away by the waters so blue
They carried that beautiful child
To his tender mother, to his sister and brothers
Little Moses looked happy and smiled
His mother so good did all that she could
To raise him and teach him with care
And away by the sea that was red
Little Moses the servant of God
While in him confided, the sea was divided
As upwards he lifted his rod
And the Jews safely crossed while Pharaoh's host
Was drowned in the waters and lost
And away on a mountain so high
The last that he ever did see
With Israel victorious, his hopes were most glorious
That soon all the Jordan be free
When his spirit did cease, he departed in peace
And rested in the Heavens above
Joan Baez has the most angelic of voices...never heard MARY HAMILTON before...I hope I never forget it! Ethereally beautiful...
Beautiful voice
60 years singing and living for peace and love, great
😊😊
Great singer great songs well done
Baez may have aged , but the songs remained evergreen 💕

Also, Love Is Just a Four Letter Word might have been included.

I'm white, English, 6 goot 5, work as a plasterer, have tattoos, drink lager, and swear in pubs. And Joan Baez is my all time favourite artist. She gets played everywhere i go and especially at work. Funny the people you meet eh ?

Patrimonio dell'umanità dell'UNESCO, grande Joan!
Dio ti benedica!
I am so sorry in Italy just few people know about her.... Even if she played for Morricone the song about Sacco e Vanzetti
This is probably a general problem with humans: they are too narrow-minded and many of the species don't like learning new things. They would rather vegetate in their comfortably furnished swamp than think outside the box or question themselves.
Just came across Joan by accident what have I been missing such a wonderful singer.
Voices from heaven for mankind ! The first time I heard of her song Greenwood Side, I was too impressed to utter a single word.
''Voices from heaven'' ? Nonsense, Joan is a faithful Atheist !
Why must I subscribe to your opinion?
@@tklim66 Just an opinion. Nothing more ....
@@timoconnor8520: Actually her family embraces Quakerism, a christian sect.
Sebagai pewaris musik dunia saya mengenal Joan Baez sekitar THN 1970 akhir/1980 an lewat lagu: Dona-dona.
What a tremendous voice!

Beautiful. From Italy.
01. In my opinion, the best song of Joan Baez...
Always and forever
I lived with her music in my heart since the early 1960s.
Bravo!💐💐💐💐 Amazing voice!! Clear brilliant!!
Late night cold wind the feel is so so good
Wonderful Music! Wonderful Joan! 🙂💯❤. But why all these ads between the songs? It´s a pity!
You have to pay to not have these ads…they’re not nice sounding ads at all are they. We pay to not listen to that.
This is a more than nice collection. No Dylan songs though, except for Forever Young, only Joan's bitter-sweet tribute to their friendship. But say there, wasn't The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down written by a former band member of Dylan's, Robbie Robertson?
This is a clearer version. Every melody is so strong that I miss none of it.
Una voce cristallina e calda come poche...un sound intramontabile...thanks you Joan
I've never been able to make it through Mary Hamilton without crying my eyes out
It has done that to me for 60 years
Sooo love this. My brother loved Joan Baez
It's okay to fall.
Be brave and tell the truth.
you are a good person who carries light
for others.🙏
Thank you*~💕
