With your mercury mouth in the missionary times,
And your eyes like smoke and your prayers like rhymes,
And your silver cross, and your voice like chimes,
Oh, who among them do they think could bury you?
With your pockets well protected at last,
And your streetcar visions which you place on the grass,
And your flesh like silk, and your face like glass,
Who among them do they think could carry you?
    Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands,
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes,
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums,
Should I put them by your gate,
Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?
With your sheets like metal and your belt like lace,
And your deck of cards missing the jack and the ace,
And your basement clothes and your hollow face,
Who among them can think he could outguess you?
With your silhouette when the sunlight dims
Into your eyes where the moonlight swims,
And your match-book songs and your gypsy hymns,
Who among them would try to impress you?

Are waiting in line for their geranium kiss,
And you wouldn't know it would happen like this,

Should I leave them by your gate,
Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?
Oh, the farmers and the businessmen, they all did decide
To show you the dead angels that they used to hide.
But why did they pick you to sympathize with their side?
Oh, how could they ever mistake you?
They wished you'd accepted the blame for the farm,
But with the sea at your feet and the phony false alarm,
And with the child of a hoodlum wrapped up in your arms,
How could they ever, ever persuade you?

And your saintlike face and your ghostlike soul,

In about 10 years from this year, all these gems, all these wonderful singer, songwriters and talented hippies that changed this world will sadly die off, never to be replaced. The songs that were made in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s changed how people think and how they challenged social order as it was. Nice job!
There’s good music still being made but too much is manufactured junk by billionaires who push weak talent to the top of todays charts. Money machine factories unlike yesterday’s great and talented people who again made statements never to be replicated.

When this song came out on Blonde On Blonde, it was in the era of 2 to 3 minute singles. That anyone would devote one side of an LP to one song was stunning, but it flowed along like a river of metaphors. Dylan is/ was very good at creating melodies for his poetry. His melodies are underrated. Joan is wonderful on this one.

Today we see there are tremendous forces that only concern seems to be holding onto a power that was earned on the backs of those enslaved. The fight continues! In 1964 I was often in front of the White House when we picketed the White House and singing all those old civil rights songs In support of passing the 1964 Civil Rights Bill. One day it was bigger rally across the street in Lafayette Park. I was just standing around and all of a sudden, Joan Baez stepped out of the crowd. She was there to support Civil Rights, not to sing. I was stunned by how beautiful she was. A few years later she was singing to a huge crowd gathered on the Mall in an anti Vietnam war protest. She was singing from a stage erected on the west steps of the Capitol exactly where the January 6th riot took place. Around 4 years ago I saw her perform at the Kate Wolf Festival in Mendocino county. Her son was playing percussion. She looked great and sounded great and got a standing ovation. She turned 80 last January 9th.

I grew up listening to Joan Baez, my mother had several LPs of hers and played them very often. I soon loved her music. I had the opportunity to see her twice live, my heart warmed with deep emotions, also the memory of my late mother.
Now I am reflecting on how the ideals of a generation that inspired hope for a better world have degenerated into a dark ideology. Or is it me who has changed? Or both?

I'm seventy now and this song takes me back to my youth. Joan Baez, what a Voice to speak out for justice, equality, civil rights on behalf of those who were never given a voice. What great American, what a wonderful world citizen she is!!! Happy and proud I was on several of her live concerts in different places in Europe over the years she was performing there. Her voice, her ambitions to fight for human rights, her political engagement and bravery to shed light on the wrongs to turn some - and if possible more - toward what's right, her message to spur peace, to ask for engagement, to dare more and true democracy, to reject and defeat wars and autocracies, to overcome bigotry, all this had a great impact and helped together with many other artists to change an entire generation and with it many things more to the better. Nothing was done in vain, even it may at times appear as such!! Joan is and was always hope for better days in a future to believe in to become true!

Christian, well-said and passionate. I randomly came across Baez-Dylan-Paul Simon collaborations this morning and am immersed in them to great joy and a few tears. The photos of Bob and Joan, the look on their faces, especially Bob, he was transformed, I have never seen such vulnerability in him, it is beautiful to see -- he loved her, and then they played Diamonds and Rust and you knew it was mutual. They were with Paul Simon and did a hypnotic, 3-guitar version of Sounds of Silence, all slowed down and dreamy, about 7 minutes long -- if you didn't feel that it just wasn't your era. It was mine and I'm grateful. Yes, Baez, Dylan and others were great Americans, stood for humanity and authenticity and beauty -- too bad so much of the rest of the world wasn't up to it. Today, it's sunk pretty low and I'm not just talking about Washington DC. But we know what the ideal is, we have looked in their faces and seen it, so we raise out children with love and freedom and we walk the walk, and hope that it pays off.

I am 74 also and my husband and I lived in San Francisco until 1975 when we moved to Marin Co. Joan has always been an elegant woman - her hairdos, her modest and very stylish and feminine clothes, her elegant choice of jewelry and never smoking or holding a glass of alcohol - with the voice of an Angel. I wasn't into Bob Dylan or Joan Baez concerts then and learned from You Tube videos that she and Bob were engaged until he left her to marry Sara. I am so thankful to the person who posted her life story in photos. All the photos made me aware that this song isn't just about Sara, but is about Joan also. Confusing because in song "Sara", Bob stated that he wrote "Sad Eyed Lady" for Sara. Learned from the You Tube posting of Joan singing her composition "Diamonds and Rust" that the song was about Bob, who I read was irritated at the time, but reunited with Joan in his Rolling Thunder tour and later expressed his lifelong love for Joan.

Song coupled with the photomontage is deeply touching to me. Makes me think of listening to Bob and her, together and separately since 1963. Only got to see either of them in in concert in recent years. Just gives me shivers to think of how much of heir music I have incorporated into my soul all these years.

I am convinced through the amazing photo essay put to Joan's other-worldly vocals that Dylan was in love with two women when he wrote this

@@lisayee2362 Interesting comment. You could be right, yet I don’t sense that Dylan ever really loved Baez. They had some great times together but he was more interested in his career than he was in her. He basked in her adoration and “rode” her until she carried him to fame. He used her and he admits it. How much did he love his wife? I don’t know about that.

Bob wrote it to his true love that was Sara, their divorce really broke him. The tragedy in Bob's romantic life is that he connected with Joan on a musical, artistic level but didnt love her. With Sara it was the opposite,he was in love with her but didnt connect, bond with her on an artistic level.Sara wasnt an artist. Bob said that when he started taking painting classes in NY he couldnt share it wih her,it didn't interest her,its not like they talked about it for hours, she wasnt nourishing him on his artistic life. He always felt incomplete in relationships,i believe he is a deeply lonely man,a hermit soul deep down

Great art is often rooted in deep pain, this song is proof. Dylan wrote the song for Sarah Lownds, then proposed to and married her, leaving his former love Joan Baez behind. Thus Joans other classic, Diamonds and Rust, which tells of how betrayed she felt. Dylan is the worlds greatest living poet and songwriter, but he sure did hurt those women who loved him, and he knows it. Thus his song of guilt and repentance Every Grain of Sand, another masterpiece.
