Robin really was a force of nature! It's like a great jazz musician riffing and improvising, going off in all sorts of directions but always coming back to the original theme. What a great man, much missed.

Clive Anderson is actually criminally underrated, comically but here he couldn't cope with Robin but the best thing was he just went with it, and got in a couple of great quips at the end too.
Possibly my fav ever Robin interview this!!

What most people don't know is how dedicated to his friends Robin was. He paid ALL Christopher Reeve's medical bills. And his last phone call was to Billy Connolly to say "goodbye". If you believe in heaven, after all the laughter and joy Robin brought to the world, I'm sure Robin is there.

You can see that he put so much energy into every ounce of performance... its no wonder that it sadly, admittedly left him dry. You can tell he felt alive during making other people happy - just sad that he went the way he did and not many people knew or could do anything about it. Just goes to show, when you know what deep unhappiness looks like, all you want to do is put the people around you anywhere but in that place.
God bless you Robin, may your soul now find the peace it deserves.

I've suffered from depression and I've a fair idea of what he went thru but it must have been much worse for him because he was famous. ***** Hi ya I was young too! 13 years old! He was adorable in that!
Don't we all wish we could have helped Robin, talked to him, listened, understood, helped him, loved him. Trouble is we did all love him, he just didn't know............ I honestly don't think he truly realised, despite it being blatantly obvious by audience reaction when he was on stage/doing interviews, he always seemed surprised by the demonstrations of affection towards him.
I also believe that he saw a very bleak dependent future for himself, and simply could not bare the idea of not being to do what he does best - make people laugh.
I truly believe in his depressed state he could not bare the thought of his wife and family ending up his carers............................

hi Patrick. thanks for the comment. I was there also and was gonna say the same thing. I think he was on for 30 mins or so? When I watched it on tv the next week I realised they'd edited a lot out to make it fit into the show !

@@melita65 - We will never know, sadly...but I've heard similar suggestions before. All that's certain is that he was suffering from Lewey Body Dementia, which can easily affect a person's thoughts and emotions. For someone as already energetic as Robin, his disease probably accelerated his mind and heart beyond his own control.

I actually did have the opportunity of meeting Robin in 1981. We were on a business trip and it was the last night and so we were doing what all over promoted 22-year-olds do we were hitting the clubs and getting loaded. And we were in the comedy club, and he came out Walked right off the stage and into the audience and started going to the table as he chose and making comments and he got to our table and he asked me where I was from and I said Joliet Illinois to which he replied, not quite the end of the world, but you can see it from there. To this day and I am 66 years old. There is not a time when anyone in our family is asked where we’re from that we don’t reply Joliet Illinois not quite the end of the world but you can see it from there. It was one of the best nights of my life. it broke my heart when he died. It was just a year after I lost my dad and at that point I don’t think I ever felt so alone.

@ Mark O'Sullivan I first saw this on the above date when I was 13. It was my little friend's 6th birthday that day too. I had been waiting in anticipation for this show on BBC1. This particular episode! And I wasn't disappointed! I had recorded this on my video recorder that time, but due to circumstances beyond my control, the recording (& a lot of my recordings) was given to various charity shops. Boy, was I unhappy about that! But I am soooo happy that at least someone out there decided to put this up. Thank you very much for putting this up, I have been looking for this episode for YEARS on TH-cam, hoping that someone, a fan, would've put it on.And at last, it is here! Thanks for sharing this.Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!!!! :-D

4RedDwarf3 Paul Merton is actually funny. Robin Williams had a few voices that he used in rapid fire which fooled dumb people into thinking he was funny. Programs like Family Guy got wise to him and he knew it. If you actually listen to the jokes he's making they're usually weak. He also stole other comedian's jokes for his stand up act.

I've wondered what Robin Williams was doing in a regular conversation with people who have. to. ponder. ev-e-ry. thought. and... think... slow-ly. before.they... speak, when his mind was racing at Mach 5. It must have been painful for him to wait for other people to stop speaking. The man was an absolute talent, a master at his craft. Imagine how painful it must have been for him to realise that his illness prevented him from operating at that speed of thinking when it had always come so easy to him.

Anderson used that on Roger Moore once, but Roger being the gentleman he is, took it in his stride and dealt with it with extreme class. Robin is hilarious and it's GOLD to see him dominate on this show lol. Putting someone down is a cheap way to get laughs and it shows a lack of talent.
