I read that poor Robin Williams was indeed "mad". He is a good example of a mentally ill person who was able to adapt to his mental illness SO Well that he made a living with it. Robin apparently had a psychiatric diagnosis that included Mania, and what you see on stage with him is a literal Maniac in action. I am in no way demeaning Robin because of this. In fact, he is a Poster Child for the view that being Disabled doesn't mean that you must Stop Living. Robin didn't let his Mental Illness defeat him. In fact, he got his Mental Illness to work for him. He was a Much Better Person than his Manic Comedy would lead you to believe. RIP, Robin !!!
After Watching all the Rodney Dangerfield's on Carson and going to all the Robin Williams my shirt is soaked in tears from laughing! Nothing compares in decades to the 80s-90s comedy, haven't laughed at ANY standup after those years passed. No swearing just pre comedy, we will never see anything like this again just every single comeback and line just gold!

When I was a kid my siblings and I all wrote a celebrity I was the only one to get a response I wrote robin Williams he sent me an autograph and a letter the autographed picture is on top of my dresser right now I cherish it
Back in 1975, I think it was right before Mork and Mindy got on the air, I had the pleasure of talking to Robin for about 20 min. to half an hour. This was in Studio City, California in the McDonald's parking lot. He was driving the new Jeep that the producers had bought for rhe show. I was thinking about maybe buying one and so I was admiring the car and we chatted a while. He told me hiw excited he was to get to be on TV and how they had 'discovered' him doing his stand up in a local comedy club. He was EXACTLY how he ALWAYS was; hyper, funny, dramatic AND VERY CUTE. I hardly got a chance to talk but I didn't mind. When I broke off the conversation (stupid me) Robin said, "Oh? So you're dismissing me?" I don't have a photo but that is one if many great memories I have from living where there were so many ppl in show business. I cried when Robin decided to leave the Earth but he was sick and REALLY tired. He gave so much of himself for so long we should all be very grateful we knew him. So we both left and as I looked back at him walking to his new Jeep the last thing I noticed was that he had a great butt. Ha!! 😊
Same here. We wrote celebs for a class assignment in grade school. I wrote Robin and told him I had heard he had a parrot, and asked if I could have a picture with him and his parrot. He sent it to me and sadly I lost it. I'd give anything to have it now. He was a comic genius. His mind was faster than a hummingbird. No one could ever come close to him, and he can never be replaced.
When I was a child I wrote a poem for Mr Williams and he read it on live radio and laughed but it wasn’t meant as a comedy poem and I was sad and years later he committed suicide.
Think about how many times he said, "don't be afraid." It's touching how he transforms his intense vulnerability, humanity, and fear of failure into humour that uplifts. He was a profound and hypersensitive human being. Such a love for his fellow man and woman. I miss him so very much.
Love seeing people actually enjoying each other. The older I get, the more I seek out humor , whether it’s, nonsense, well constructed, slapstick anything.

I used to live for Williams on Carson. In the early 80's I was only allowed to watch it on Friday nights, due to school. But if I knew Williams was on I'd sneak into the family room to watch him. The day he died I was driving home from work, listening to NPR and it came across. I cried in the car.
What I love about this clip is the fact that it's not about Robin's genius... we all know about that ... it shows what a great comedian Johnny was ... and how he sensed right away that he was talking to a genius!

I am not trying to be negative. I never found him funny. I always knew something was wrong with him. What happen was as an empath i always saw his real truth sadness. Other see a funny happy man i only was able to see how unhappy and sad he was 😔. A beautiful kind human being but really sad and lonely inside 😥. Now he is free of pain 🙏.
He had the quickest wit I've ever seen and could totally turn a joke into a whole segment. Johnny was always a joy to watch. I wish there was another Johnny out there but I don't think there ever could be. As there could never be another Robin. He's brought me so much laughter and entertainment 🤣🤣

One of Johnny's best qualities is he knew when to help a guest along and when to sit back & ride it out. He was the King of Late Night. Letterman was really, really good but nobody has ever been at Carson's caliber.
I remember watching this the night it first aired. I was already a fan of Mork & Mindy - and RW just brought down the house that night. Laughed so hard I had tears that night. 40 years later I can't help but think about the irony of his coke joke. But sadly we lost a comic genius, great actor, great human being. He was one of a kind.
I've never seen this. Thank you for sharing it with us. It's pure comedy gold. I loved Robin. When I was a kid, I had an older brother who purchased the Reality What a Concept record. I listened to it constantly, memorized large portions, cleaned it up, and "performed it" on the playground at school during recess. He was a legend in the comedy world.....and an amazing actor. It devastated me when we lost him. There will never be another comedian like him. R.I.P. Oh Captain, my Captain.
I love this, he was so so funny. Back in the 80s we went to the Improv in New York City one night. Robin Williams showed up, and did a 20 minute bit. I was actually crying, slapping the table and gasping for breath. None of us could breathe and our stomachs hurt afterwards. He was such a genius and so quick.
Read an article once where the director of Mork and Mindy said, "After trying to direct Robin for a while, I just told the crew, to hell with it! Just let him run, we'll edit later!" lol Robin Williams was an unregulated dynamo! RIP brother.
My dad was the still photographer on that show... And yes it was a free for all with Robin...just let him run... And I saw Robin at the Pasadena Comedy Store just as he got the contract for "Mork and Mindy"... I was sitting at a table by the side of the stage and it was dark... And Robin howned in on me and asked because it was so dark was I in the witness protection... Later after the show he came up to me again and asked if I was... And I said yes...now I have to move because of you... He thought that was funny... Then I said it again and he didn't know now if I was kidding or not... But I started laughing...he was great... Later my dad told him during filming that I was his son...and that the FBI had relocated me successfully... He got a kick out of that... When ever I'm down...I just watch Robin... Thank you ..."Mr. Williams"... By the way...the relocation is going great...thanks it couldn't of happened without you...lolololol
@@tall1sobay Can you imagine how much money Disney could make if they would just release a 10 episode hour long series with the best of the unreleased recordings from Robin's Genie recordings. It's been said that they have dozens of hours of unreleased content and for Robin and they animated all of the genie's scenes after he did his recording session which is highly unusual because they normally do it the other way around (often with a rough animation sketch) so that the actors can see the scene and read their lines to what they see on the screen.
Absolutely brilliant. He just came grab a microphone, get through whatever nerves he has because he is a human, and then put together some of the funniest material ever performed live
Not to disagree too strongly here, Williams is great but Carson gave big laughs to nearly EVERY comic on his program. He was their best audience and the comics loved him for it.
Genius of an inexplicable nature. He was the master of every form of comedy: verbal, physical, improvisational, impressionistic, jokes. No wonder nobody is watching Kimmel et al, we're all watching this late at night because it's a million times better.
This was a once in a lifetime talent, and as others have stated, Carson had an innate sense to just let Williams go and do his thing without trying to reign him in.
Innate sense not to try to have anything like a conventional conversation with him. In those situations, everyone around Williams became part of his routine. It wasn’t a competition, but did anyone else ever dominate a stage that Robin Williams was on?
When Johnny invited a comedian over to sit down after his act and chat, that was seen as his seal of approval and a very big deal to all comedians. It was Johnny telling the world “I like this guy, go see him.” Johnny just sitting and laughing uncontrollably for 15 minutes straight was equal to him saying “I LOVE this guy!”
The undisputed king of comedy!! He took over the tonight show, with absolutely no effort!! A true master, a great guy and I am truly sad that He is gone now. Thank God we have these videos to look back on.
Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon certainly had a ball with the Tonight Show...but this appearance with Robin Williams, that is pure platinum of entertainment who was never afraid to bring a smile to our face and bring joy to our hearts. All three are certainly missed!
I'm lucky I had the pleasure of meeting Robin when I was 16 years old, back in 2004 at a music shop, then called jobys, in North Lake Tahoe, CA. I was so shocked, he shook my hand, I couldn't find words to speak. He had one arm full of CD's he was buying. It was awesome, i was the only one out of my friends, that had the courage to walk up to him that day.
Man, I miss Robin. He became such a great actor that one can slightly forget how hilarious he was in person. Depression can be extremely real for some folks.
From what I understand, he had Parkinson's and Lewy Body Dementia. His poor mind didn't know what was going on anymore. What a gift he was to this world.

I was very lucky that I was in college and grad school during Johnny’s hay day……Tiny Tim’s wedding etc.
It's worth watching every rerun of Get Smart just to see Johnny Carson's occasional cameo's.

I remember watching this the night it first aired. I was already a fan of Mork & Mindy - and RW just brought down the house that night. Laughed so hard I had tears that night. 40 years later I can't help but think about the irony of his coke joke. But sadly we lost a comic genius, great actor, great human being. He was one of a kind.

I've never seen this. Thank you for sharing it with us. It's pure comedy gold. I loved Robin. When I was a kid, I had an older brother who purchased the Reality What a Concept record. I listened to it constantly, memorized large portions, cleaned it up, and "performed it" on the playground at school during recess. He was a legend in the comedy world.....and an amazing actor. It devastated me when we lost him. There will never be another comedian like him. R.I.P. Oh Captain, my Captain.

I love this, he was so so funny. Back in the 80s we went to the Improv in New York City one night. Robin Williams showed up, and did a 20 minute bit. I was actually crying, slapping the table and gasping for breath. None of us could breathe and our stomachs hurt afterwards. He was such a genius and so quick.

Read an article once where the director of Mork and Mindy said, "After trying to direct Robin for a while, I just told the crew, to hell with it! Just let him run, we'll edit later!" lol Robin Williams was an unregulated dynamo! RIP brother.

My dad was the still photographer on that show...
And yes it was a free for all with Robin...just let him run...
And I saw Robin at the Pasadena Comedy Store just as he got the contract for "Mork and Mindy"...
I was sitting at a table by the side of the stage and it was dark...
And Robin howned in on me and asked because it was so dark was I in the witness protection...
Later after the show he came up to me again and asked if I was...
And I said yes...now I have to move because of you...
He thought that was funny...
Then I said it again and he didn't know now if I was kidding or not...
But I started laughing...he was great...
Later my dad told him during filming that I was his son...and that the FBI had relocated me successfully...
He got a kick out of that...
When ever I'm down...I just watch Robin...

@@tall1sobay Can you imagine how much money Disney could make if they would just release a 10 episode hour long series with the best of the unreleased recordings from Robin's Genie recordings.
It's been said that they have dozens of hours of unreleased content and for Robin and they animated all of the genie's scenes after he did his recording session which is highly unusual because they normally do it the other way around (often with a rough animation sketch) so that the actors can see the scene and read their lines to what they see on the screen.
Absolutely brilliant. He just came grab a microphone, get through whatever nerves he has because he is a human, and then put together some of the funniest material ever performed live

Yep. Johnny also so appreciated Jonathon Winters. Of course Robin acknowledged Jonathon as the great one.
Not to disagree too strongly here, Williams is great but Carson gave big laughs to nearly EVERY comic on his program. He was their best audience and the comics loved him for it.

Genius of an inexplicable nature. He was the master of every form of comedy: verbal, physical, improvisational, impressionistic, jokes. No wonder nobody is watching Kimmel et al, we're all watching this late at night because it's a million times better.

This was a once in a lifetime talent, and as others have stated, Carson had an innate sense to just let Williams go and do his thing without trying to reign him in.
Carson and Williams, simply the best of the best.
Innate sense not to try to have anything like a conventional conversation with him. In those situations, everyone around Williams became part of his routine. It wasn’t a competition, but did anyone else ever dominate a stage that Robin Williams was on?
When Johnny invited a comedian over to sit down after his act and chat, that was seen as his seal of approval and a very big deal to all comedians. It was Johnny telling the world “I like this guy, go see him.” Johnny just sitting and laughing uncontrollably for 15 minutes straight was equal to him saying “I LOVE this guy!”
There was a reason he was Johnny's last guest.
Smiles and laughter are Robin Williams legacy.
The undisputed king of comedy!! He took over the tonight show, with absolutely no effort!! A true master, a great guy and I am truly sad that He is gone now. Thank God we have these videos to look back on.

Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon certainly had a ball with the Tonight Show...but this appearance with Robin Williams, that is pure platinum of entertainment who was never afraid to bring a smile to our face and bring joy to our hearts. All three are certainly missed!

I'm lucky I had the pleasure of meeting Robin when I was 16 years old, back in 2004 at a music shop, then called jobys, in North Lake Tahoe, CA. I was so shocked, he shook my hand, I couldn't find words to speak. He had one arm full of CD's he was buying. It was awesome, i was the only one out of my friends, that had the courage to walk up to him that day.

Man, I miss Robin. He became such a great actor that one can slightly forget how hilarious he was in person. Depression can be extremely real for some folks.
From what I understand, he had Parkinson's and Lewy Body Dementia. His poor mind didn't know what was going on anymore. What a gift he was to this world.
