- Before you go all crazy in the comments and say this isn't the onboard for his pole lap the point of this post is not to show lap times but to show two of the best drivers to ever drive in F1 and how different the cars were. The level of skill for each is different. In 1990 Senna does some of the fastest parts of the track with only one hand on the wheel while shifting with the other (in a car with no power-steering). Hamilton is traveling at a much faster constant pace while coming within inches of the walls.

You guys get so fooled by shaky cameras it’s hilarious. I said this in another comment. I hate Ham, I think he’s overrated and lucky. But you guys need to realize the modern cars are very difficult to drive. I’m not comparing to older cars, but the cars today have no traction control or ABS. The throttle input out of corners is much much different to the days of traction control. If you look at the head vibration in the two vids, it’s similar. The main difference is that the actual camera on Senna’s is shaking because they didn’t mount it as firmly as with the modern cars. It’s an optical illusion.
With this being said, I’m not saying Senna’s car was easy to drive. I’m not saying it was easier to drive than Hamilton’s. Clearly, it had less technology and most importantly, a manual transmission. However, you fools have to stop thinking that driving a modern formula 1 car is a piece of cake. The g forces alone are enough to make modern ones very, very difficult. Watch a video called “what it’s like to drive an F1 car” where an average guy drives one and then you’ll know what I mean.
@@mikemoggerson6651 Actually the cars back then were really stiff even Scott Mansell who drove several years of F1 cars even said it, driving a older car was much harder than driving a more modern car even the different levels of refinement alone was enough to make a difference in drivability. Tire technology was far inferior back then as well even to the Pirelli’s they use today.

I am a huge Hamilton fan, but driving a manual without any assists one handed is mad and that too in Monaco. I can't even finish a lap in Monaco in a game. No wonder everyone has such massive respect for Senna, he was on another level.
Well current f1 cars are much harder to drive as said by Alonso with all the controls in steering wheel.

Not having a steady camera also shows how difficult a street track can be too. The Hamilton one doesn't give any indication of what the track surface is like with the stability that is built into modern cameras.

Senna's driving is insanely fast and fierce, you feel all the bumps and the engine screaming like a rocket, multitasking, changing gear at such high speed... Hamilton's video is like flying in a fighter plane, he's getting so close to the bareers, his control and reflexes are madly incredible...
Not forget that the width is very different, the F1 today are so much slimmer but still more grip and downforce
todays car have computers which can control everything. I think it was much harder before to drive

My god the violence in those old cars is insane. We’ve traded excitement and violence for lap times which is some incredible engineering but man does it really show how much skill it takes to drive these cars

Na verdade Ayrton Senna nos anos 80 pilotava carros com suspensão rígida (que incomodava os pilotos, deixando os carros desagradáveis de pilotar), esses carros da F1 de hoje em dia são mais fáceis de pilotar, mas com o regulamento de 2022, a suspensão rígida vai voltar, ou seja os novos carros serão desagradáveis de pilotar novamente

That's the turbo era of F1. I think peak HP was close to 1k hp with no power steering.

Career pole positions:
Senna - 65, Prost - 33 == Senna had almost twice the PPs that Prost had
Career fastest laps:
Prost - 41, Senna - 19 == Prost had more that twice the FLs that Senna had
Ayrton would go crazy in the qualifying and risk everything for 1 fast lap, but during the race he didn't have the pace.

I can only imagine how terrifying it must feel to take one hand off the steering wheel to shift gears while the car is going at a gazillion miles per hour. I believe current F1 drivers take for granted just how much assistance their cars give them in a race, I don't think any of then would be able to drive a car like Senna's McLaren in a real race.
Todays cars have no driving assists apart from power steering
You need take into account that F1 cars nowadays are monumentally faster, you could argue maybe the older guys won't even be able to perform well in the newer cars simply due to how much faster they are.
@@OwO-dw8ox I'm pretty sure a peak Senna, Prost, Piquet etc. would really have no trouble adjusting to modern day F1 cars. Someone like Senna would positively be buzzing at the potential to drive at an even faster limit.

Definitivamente Senna fue muy superior a Hamilton, en el video se ve que el auto de Senna va revotando y vibra como sonaja, el de Hamilton tiene casi 30 años adicionales de tecnología, por eso va tan suave y aun así la diferen ia de velocidad no es tan grande. Que gran piloto fue Senna.

Não é demérito do Hamilton, é que hoje o piloto faz menos diferença pq o carro foi muito mais controlado pela tecnologia. É uma comparação injusta, mas o piloto ainda tem que fazer sua parte, Hamilton faz melhor que outros. Mas no ritmo que as coisas vão daqui a pouco os carros vão se guiar sozinhos com inteligencias artificiais. O Senna pegou a melhor época, em que os pilotos eram mais exigidos e faziam mais diferença, os carros já eram muito potentes mas o único controle era a habilidade e coragem do piloto. Não se engane época do Senna pilotavam com controle de tração e freio abs, ambos banidos pq a FIA queria que os pilotos controlasse mais o carro. Além disso, o carro do Senna é muito menor, o que ajuda pra contornar as curvas. Em contrapartida, o carro do Hamilton é mais estável pra fazer uma curva, mas não por causa da suspensão, mas sim pela aerodinâmica que gera mais pressão.

Senna was incredible, so were all those guys from the greatest era of all time mid 80's into the 90's. They have it so much easier these days. There is absolutely NO comparison. Hamilton drove one of Senna's cars at Silverstone and got out scared, he could not drive the thing. I had the privilege of seeing Senna in Adelaide, Australia from 85-94, (his last race win). @@B..P.. So physical ability of the past was more important than cerebral thinking of today. Kinda, but also F1 cars are much faster today- reaction times are reaching superhuman levels. And the athleticism of drivers today is kept under check far more stringently than before.
As on levels of human performance, drivers today have to think a lot more. They need to juggle a lot more information in their head, whilst simultaneously driving a faster car and having less time to react in case of an issue or mistake.
Of course, the big difference is safety- however unfortunately deaths have occurred even in these “safe” modern cars. Bianchi and Antoine (and almost Grosjean) come to mind. People are still risking their lives every time they race.

senna's car has more hp and less grip. it's like comparing a soap box to a train... I wish to see both drivers on the same car, not to compare the talent, I would be glad to have half of their's, but just to enjoy the show. No, it didn't. The MP4/B had around 685bhp and the Merc 950-1000bhp. True is though that the McLaren depended on mechanical grip (e.i. tyres) way more than a modern F1.

In the 90's, every driver was on the verge of collapse after every race. This shows how much more the drivers had to work with the car. I think 93', Mansell collapsed at the award ceremony.

Acho que a estabilidade da camera influencia muito em sua opinião. Olha bem os movimentos do capacete do Hamilton..a câmera da a falsa impressão que tá tudo muito tranquilo e não é bem assim kk. Agora só a diferença de câmbio manual para automático, e as suspensões essa sim são enormes. Não acho que a intenção do vídeo era colocar em votação quem seja o melhor mas sim mostrar a diferença entre as tecnologias.
Ahn, só para matar sua curiosidade, o Hamilton já dirigiu a McLaren de Senna, por diversão claro.tem vídeo por aí, ele disse que ficou surpreso de quão difícil era dirigir aquele carro..Ayrton é o grande ídolo de Hamilton.

I respect both Senna and Hamilton, Senna has 3 peddles and drives with one while shifting with the other, with respect to Senna, 11 seconds, Hamilton is every bit as close to the wall and the reflexes required to handle the lap 11 seconds faster, is epic talent. Legends in their time. Forza Michael.

The audio alone had me from the jump, let alone the manual gearbox, limited tech and telemetry.
No one will ever be able to legitimately hold a candle to Senna's ability. If Lewis was as naturally gifted as Senna, he would be qualifying over a full second faster than Bottas...which he never has.

@@Fabbie4 Verstappen would’ve set a lap to close that gap but spun at the end. Hamilton wasn’t 1.2s faster than the field that time, he was just slightly more consistent when he needed to be. Not an entirely representative comparison.

Senna's car and head are shaking all over the place, its like taming a wild bull, just being manual gearbox requires an outrageous level of skill, there's no way to compare this two performances, it's like comparing hell with paradise with 11 seconds difference.
