Seriously good video. Best one for this mirror I've seen in my search for information. Short, detailed, and easy to understand.
Couple of things to add. If your handy you can hide and route wires better with a plastic trim tool kit plenty of videos on how to do that. They also sell universal hard wire adapters to you can plug it into your fuse block and you don't have to have a cord going to your cigarette lighter. I have no special training in anything and I was able to complete hide and hard wire this myself

On the reverse rear camera I just took the red wire and remove the light and remove some of the plastic covering off an attach it with one of the light bulb and it work fine.

You can get a hard wire kit for these for under $20. So you don't need the cigarette lighter. And if you flip the tilt on the bottom of the factory mirror when the cam is on. It gets rid of the glare from the rear and just use the rear cam as your rear view
Great Vid! What i heard works is tilting the mirror down to completely negate the light, and then using the video input itself as your view of the back of the car, as opposed to reflections. I hear the angle is wider and you can actually see more than trying to just use the reflection. I'm going to try that when my unit arrives.
That would certainly help, and yes the angle is much wider. But it's effectiveness as a total replacement for your rear view mirror depends on where you mount the camera.
hey i wondering if you could help me when i connect sd to mac i can see video but if i try too download the video wherever i save it it wont play it just gives me the sound and video is stuck on a frame
Thinking about purchasing this mirror and I’m grateful even after years later your still responding to peoples questions. My only concern is there anyway to stop the recording to save space and battery, when my car is off or parked. Ive heard that it stays recoding 24/7 so i’m just a lil worried. I’m also purchasing a car diffuser that’ll plug into my car jack or whatever will this all significantly drain my battery? My car when off or parked doesn’t consume any batter nor is anything else running. These would be the only two things in my car that I would have plugged in and I guess running. A lot of questions there... do ur best to answer them thank you 🙏🏾
So can I still install the rear view camera just for getting a better rear view without messing with the electrical of the car?

Hey there thanks for the great review, so my car has a factory Auto dimming mirror, I am pretty sensitive to light I want to add a rear view camera and I already have a dashcam but I can put it in my other car so the dash cam would be nice, do you think I will be bummed because I will miss normal Auto dimming, and putting a piece of anti-glare coating on the screen I already know won't suffice thoughts? i was given one of these. all excited to hook it up. it powers up at full volume, but no menu. basically just a view from the front camera.....any idea how to get the menu working so i can use it?
I just got this thing for Christmas and I can’t figure out how to use the time lapse feature. I click time lapse, go back to the main screen, and it starts recording, but it only records regular video and not a time lapse, and the manual has no information on this???
I've been through 3 of these cameras and they all have the same problem. The screen flickers, after it flickers it automatically switches between cameras. Even when I turn off the display it comes back on by it self. Often when backing up the screen turns black and white with rainbow strips. Checked back today and the Amazon listing vanished.
Great review, I installed mine yesterday and am very happy with it. I agree with everything you say. My thoughts on the reflections in the mirror whilst the rear camera is on is to decide which you prefer and opt for that one only. in my case I prefer to see the dash cam view, and therefore I tilted the mirror up so that I do not see any reflections. Perfect ! That way you don’t get a mix of the two, you only see the dash cam view.
Also, I already had a dash cam wiring professionally installed for the front, so I don’t need to use the cigarette lighter cable.
One thing which I forgot when I purchased this cam is that it doesn’t have gps, so you won’t get any location or speed information, so it’s not as useful for insurance purposes should you ever need it for that as they usually want/need that kind of information.

Can anyone comment on how to attached the camera itself on the outside of the vehicle? I noticed the type of bracket used is similar to other cameras and in those cases, it is required to drill a hole in the car. Any other suggestions? Any way to fit a license plate bracket ?

Thanks for this review, I'm convinced on buying this. Although, Im going to remove the cigarette lighter outlet and instead connect mine to an open fuse slot that operates only when the ignition on.

Just installed a very similar mirror dash cam in my Dodge Caravan yesterday, hiding the wires was easy with the included tool. The wires easily slid behind the edges of panels and under door gaskets,etc.

Very good review video. Question about the rear cam, when you going to park in reverse, always show STOP in the camera or is if you are very close to the object on the back? If you change the angle of view of the rear cam, like looking straight to the ground or looking far away, always show the same image STOP and the color lines?

I had one of these and the weird thing is the 2K one has only a 1 minute, 3 minute and forever timer and the 1080p one has a 30 second timer and 1 minute timer which is significant because sometimes you want it to shut off quickly so you can use it as an actual mirror. I don't know why they did this and I rather have the 2k one but may switch back to the 1080p just because of that reason
Thanks for the review. I am pretty sure I am going to get their 12"" 2.4k model - a lot cheaper & more useable then just a rear view camera with a touch screen stereo.

You just need to mount the rear camera upside down.

Hello, thank you for the great video. I have a question. How about the battery life when the engine of the car is off? Will it last 24 hours? I recently purchased a camera (different one). The batter cannot even last 3 minutes after turning off the engine. I've had the camera for over a year. The battery has worn out.

When the yellow light starts flashing does this mirror mounted camera record small clips all the time ?
From what I can tell, the yellow light means the g sensor was tripped and that's what caused it to start recording.
Can it be powered without having to plug into cigarette lighter?

Being high quality do you lose Fps while recording or playing back recorded video ?
You can change the fps to 30, 15 or 7ish fps if I recall to save space on your ad card if need be. Your playback should reflect whatever setting you choose.
What’s the best SD card ?
You can use VLC Media Player to play anything

If you wire it so it will automatically switch to rear view when you put it in reverse, it will show the rear camera. You might be able to change it, but not sure. Don't have it anymore.
The list states a 400MA/3.7V battery is that already installed in the Mirror? If so, how do you replace it if needed?
I don't think the battery is replaceable.
Had an audio shop install this tints and headlights they fucked up everthing except the backup camera which is this one right here I just recently put in the SD card make sure to put it in then go into setting and format in there. You can then swipe left to access the videos. I admit it is a pain sometimes with the recording system it will record when I swipe to see the videos and back or when I start the car and go into reverse immediately but I’d have this thing triggering whenever then not at all. The videos are easily deleted not a problem at all. This thing has survived severe rain to where the camera will go dark for a majority of the drive that night then next day when it’s not raining it will come back to life. I do wish for a better view so I’m interested in just finding another mirror and just connecting into the usb plug n play.
How do I prevent it from resetting the date every time I shut down the vehicle and turn it back on? :(
The internal battery might be dead. Might contact their support.
I meant to add love pointing to the cam if person's think they can try and sue if I allow them to walk into my car.
The rear camera has to be installed upside down so that the image on the mirror is right side up. There is no control to switch the orientation of the image. I have an actual VAN and unfortunately the mounting location is upright on the roof, which provides an upside down image. Anyone has a fix for this pls post.
You can remove the camera from the mount and flip it over and re-attach it so it will fit correctly.

Hi, thanks for the video, a couple of questions: if you are recording and then press the power button to turn the mirror into a "real mirror", I guess the mirror will continue recording, right? But do you have some hint (e.g. a led light) indicating that the device is actually recording, or do you need to press the button again to check that?
Also, if you need to drive in reverse, the mirror automatically will show the rear camera, even if you are using the device as a "real mirror" at this moment? I ask because in some circumstances, maybe you need to reverse a little bit, but not necessarily for parking, so it could be somewhat confusing to see the display from the rear camera if some time I only want to see the real reflection from the mirror.

Yes if you turn off the screen, it will still record. There isn't any indication that it is recording though if the screen is off.
If you have the reverse wire attached to the reverse light wire, it will show the reverse screen even if the screen was off.

Great video ! I'm not a fan of installing the rear camera inside the car behind the back glass nor drilling hols in the back of my car, do you think replacing the original rear camera with a licence plate frame rear camera is practical? I'm afraid of incompatibility issue..
I'm not sure if a 3rd party rear camera would be compatible. It would have to at least have the 1/8 Jack the vantop uses.. but then, even if it does, there is no quarantee the vantop would even understand the signal.

i got a 2013 mustang gt dont really want to splice my reverse light wire, will the rear camera be useful if i just mount it exterior of the car top of the license plate? how come you coulndt find a mounting spot outback?
The reverse camera still works without wiring the reverse lights, but it won't auto switch to reverse when in reverse, and you won't see the reverse guides (the effectiveness of those reverse guides is debatable).
The biggest reason I ended up not being able to find a spot in the back was because I couldn't find a good way to route the wire. Didn't want to drill a hole... or that sort of thing.

Oh they don't turn or move at all. They are static. If your camera is mounted at a bad angle or in a terrible place, they won't line up or help at all. Dunno, I just don't find them to be very helpful.
My son had this one and offroading he ripped off the rear camera.. now I am trying to replace. Question. I don't want to have the rear view camera only in reverse - I want it all the time as we have a truck camper on. Where should I power it from? Still the reverse lights? THANKS in advance
It'll show the reverse camera as much as you want. Power it with the cigarette lighter. Just unplug it when not in use.

Uses both. You can swipe to change which one you see, or see both.
My touch screen does not work, there is no sd card inserted but when i do it, it says "the micro sd need to be formatted", i did but the message is the same
You could unplug everything from the camera and then plug it back in to see if the fixes the screen. If it doesn't, then you might need to contact VanTop support.
Are you having the dash cam do the formatting? If you are, you could have a computer format the card, or perhaps try another card.
Will this drain my battery while the car is off? Does it stay on the whole time always just on using it up? And I have two cigarette ports is there always one better than the other ? Also would I have to keep disconnecting it from the cigarette port so it doesn't drain the battery Everytime in not gonna use it or I'm parked when it's in no harm?
Possibly, there are a few "if's." If your cigarette lighter provides power even when your cat is turned off, and if you leave your car unused for a long enough period of time, it could drain your battery.
i just bought this and i like it; however, I notice the reflection from the back windshield. It gives the effect of having a screen being a layer on top of my normal rearview. It's very large distraction because I can see the headrests of my backseats through the screen. Do you have that problem? I have the unit position angled to where I can shut the screen off and use it as a regular monitor. I feel this is necessary because during bright daytime hours the glare is too strong to rely simply on the screen
Yeah. If you angle it to act as a mirror when the screen is off, then sometimes they screen and reflection can both be seen and it's a bit annoying.
@@BudgetNerd Its really annoying. Guess I have to purposely angle the mirror lower toward the backseats to avoid seeing the back windshield and duck my head down when I need to use the actual mirror when its extremely bright..thanks for the response

mine is frozen it just says entering parking mode the on off switch won't work and the touch screen won't respond it did this a month ago but the next day it restarted fine I hate this thing any ideas ?
There is bound to be instructions in the manual to reset it. Otherwise I'd call vantap support.
I am also experiencing same problem, it just switch on off, for no reason. I am not using anymore.

Do you HAVE to wire the reverse sensor? Or can you just manually switch between the two?
You don't have to connect the red reverse sensor. You could manually change to reverse if you would like.
You can also change the "Streaming Media" setting to one and it will default to the Rear View Cam, so as soon as it powers on, it will always go to the Rear Facing Camera View :)

You have to run the Red Wire to the Power Wire on one of your Reverse Lights(White Back-Up Lights). That's the only way to get the Parking aid Assist.

My vehicle is being vandalized almost each night.
The suspect is the neighbor and everyone knows he is a troublemaker in the neighborhood.
We have tried everything on this earth but to no avail. He will cover up the dash cam on my veh before he vandalized my vehicle
Wre even have trail cams he does the same thing.
This is my 5th vehicle he is vandalizing. Could you tell me what type of dash cam i can get or anyother ideas.
I had tried several dash cams but to no avail. Hard wired with parking mode too. Per the police we have to see his face but he covers up very well when he goes out at night to vandalized cars.
He is almost 80yrs old and stole a bunch of box cutters while he he used to work at stop and shop.
He uses the box cutters to vandalized cars around the neighborhood .
He sleeps during the day and vandalized vehicles at night. He gets a high from doing that.
I need help...any ideas to catch him? This had been going on too long.

No but they may be captured on audio. There is a picture showing the range the front and back can see and the side doors are not in view.
For some reason, the camera is displaying the raw image, rather than the mirror image. Is there any way to toggle that?
What do mean by raw image? And what do you mean by mirror image?
@@BudgetNerd when you look in a rearview mirror, the image is reversed. On the VanTop, the image is not reversed like a mirror.
Ah.. I don't think there was an option to change that, that I recall.

It does need an sd card that can record at a certain speed. Just grab a faster one.

I see the mirror that is attached seem to vibrate a lot when driving. Is that something that is distracting
It actually doesn't vibrate much at all. I thought it would do it more, but it was minimal.

There wasn't a setting. I'm pretty sure it was because my cig lighter in my car always gives power, and as long as the camera is getting power, it records.

It didn't destroy the battery, but it did drain it enough where the car wouldn't start. Once charged, the battery was fine.

Yeah you can just turn the screen off.

Buy a new Dash Cam lol. The Files are on the Micro SD card only.

Not sure how having it without it doubling as a mirror would be illegal. Are commercial trucks that can't see out the back with a rearview mirror breaking the law in Wisconsin?

You could use it as a backup camera of sorts without a sd card, but you couldn't record anything.

I worked fine for me at night, but I can't comment on the tinted windows part. My car doesn't have tinted windows.
If the camera is mounted so it’s not looking through any tint, like outside, or remove a small amount of tint if you want to mount it inside, it will be fine.
when wearing polarized glasses, does mirror screen turn to shit?
Very good question. I do have polarized glasses and haven't noticed any issues with this screen.
Is cigarette lighter the only option to turn it on?? There's no USB way or other way?
There are other ways to power it, but the only official way is the cig lighter..
Does it continue to record if the screen is turned off?
If the screen has just timed out and it was recording when it was on, yes it will keep recording.
So if you press the button off, it will stop recording? I had the same question lol. For the screen to time out, how long does that take ?
