    good review. i just installed mine. to switch cameras quickly, all you have to do is swipe left on the screen. also, swiping up or down on the right side dims the screen for night time, and swiping up or down on the left side of the screen digitally changes the field of view of the camera. pretty nice unit !

    See? THIS is the video that sold me on this brand and model, beCAUSE it was raining and then shot at night in the worst conditions. So, thank you. Everyone else makes their review video in the day time bright sunlight only focusing on the front facing camera and the features menu. My need is the rear camera. Thanks for spending time on that. Well done. Vantop should pay you. They made a sale today.

    FYI. You can swipe left on the main screen to move threw the 3 video modes (front, rear, mixed) You do not have to keep going into settings and changing the streaming option (that is for setting the default view when powering on). Since I'm mentioning swipe features, you can swipe up/down on the left/right sides of the screen to adjust field of view/brightness.

    Very impressive device, the rear view is so much better than a mirror.
    Hopefully the jitter is only when the recordings are changed/recoded for youtube.

    Looks like a nice stealth bit of kit. I imagine having the rear view camera on the driver's side (at least in NA) and the front camera on the passenger side would be a lot more beneficial for switching streaming media off. Otherwise I could only ever see myself leaving that mode on all the time.

    I'm with you on the bright lights! It's like they do it on purpose.
    If I was a cop I would also write tickets for people driving around with their headlights off while it's raining outside. Illinois law Says the headlights must be on while it is raining out so people can see you, but only about 60 -70% of the people abide by it. the cops dont seem to bother people with tickets, unless it is going to be a costly ticket & worth their time or someone's driving like a maniac.

    Awesome review! Wish to have seen more of the installation but my question is, if I leave it on my cigarette port will it eventually kill my battery? Does it always run even if my car is turned off, constantly recording? How do I know which port is better to leave it on? Do I have to disconnect it from the cigarette port each time I am gonna stop using my car, or does it automatically turn off and starts up again when I run my car?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That depends on your car, as some cars turn the power off to cigarette part as soon as you turn off the ignition and others leave it running for a period of time. For example in my GM cars as soon as I turn off the power the 12 volt ports shut off. In my Ford company truck they stay on for 45 minutes and then turn off. This camera is in my work truck so when I get to the job site it will record for 45 minutes and then stop. The power ports also turn back on if a door gets opened and stay on for 45 minutes and then turn off again so if I'm opening and closing my doors while I'm at work the camera will continue to run. No it is never run down the battery not even close the current drain is very low for one of these cameras and you could probably leave it running day and night and it would not discharge your battery unless your battery itself was in poor shape and even then I doubt that leaving it run overnight would kill your battery.

      @@12voltvids After 40 years in the car business, I've found that American cars usually have the 12v plug (used to be for lighters) are hot all the time, that may no longer be true. I'm not sure but I've owned 2 Honda's and 1 Kia and it seems that most Asian or foreign cars the 12v plug is only powered with the key in start mode or the engine is running. It's very simple to check, plug anything that's 12v powered into the 12v socket and see if it powers up, with key off and with engine running.

      I have owned many American cars and the lighter plug has only been powered when the key is on. Some have a delay that keeps it powered for several minutes after the key is turned off and turns it back on as soon as the door is opened. My ford work truck is that way. It stays on for 45 minutes and then turns off. When I unlock my door the dashcam springs to life.

    I found the video from the camera somewhat disappointing. I don't know if TH-cam is screwing with the video quality, however, even accounting for rain on the window, it was really hard to read license plates unless they were extremely close.
    I also found it annoying that putting the rear view video on the mirror appeared to me to be reversed, at least in regards to the orientation one is used to seeing on the rear view.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The video on the monitor is a mirror image exactly as you see looking in a mirror. The video recorded is also a mirror image. The front camera records 2550x1440 but I rendered it our at 1080 as that is what I shot the base shots in. I will be putting up a shootout video comparing the vantop with a bosscam which is another rear view mirror cam. I will render that one out in 4k so you should see a quality improvement after TH-cam recompresses it. The bosscam demo should be up later tonight and I will do the shootout video tomorrow. I took both out today when the weather was better so they should look better.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is excellent in the dark. I put the other one I reviewed, the Boscam in my work truck only because the front facing camera was on the right side of the mirror (this one on the left) and my factory mirror on my Transit 150 work truck has the factory backup camera show as a small screen in the mirror so I attatched it over the mirror with the factory screen visible. They both look great in the dark. I put the rear camera outside attached to the license plate and it has been there since last January, out in the rain, snow and dirt. All good. I use it as a rear view mirror when driving, and when backing I have both views, the mirror cam, and the super wide view of the factory backup camera which makes backing even easier.

    Okay so I bought this thing since watching this review and the front 2k camera resolution is absolutely amazing. The 1080p rear camera isn’t as nice as the front but that’s probably because my rear window is tinted.
    Question: Did I hear correctly that the rear camera can record and display in 2k resolution if you select the switch option? This would be great if possible because I will be using the rear camera primarily for viewing blind spots in my rear view.

    • @12voltvids

      The option in the menu allows for 2k front and 1080 back or 1080 front 2k rear but I dont know of the rear camera that comes in the kit does 2k. I have never tested that option just 1080. I installed the boscam mirror camera in my work truck and put the rear camera outside on the license plate. It looks amazing. Use it all the time to see what is going on behind me because there is no rear window on that one.

      I am currently using the bosscam i reviewed in my work truck. Looks great. The only reason I am using that one over the vantop mirror cam is because the camera for the front is on the right side as opposed to left. My work truck has the backup camera display on the left side of the mirror so I need that side uncovered so i can see it and the second camera. • @SeanBZA
      @SeanBZA 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Might be low spec memory, in frame buffer, but probably encoder is just being overloaded inside the ASIC. Probably best to drop resolution on the recording, which will lighten the load, or change encoder setting, as likely it was optimised for H265 encode at highest resolution, and internal memory and processor is just not enough to do H264 encode in real time, dropping the odd frame when the encode time is exceeded and it has to process the next frame.
      Otherwise a nice camera, would like to see the daylight performance into the sun, as that is likely to be a bigger issue for most drivers, sunrise and sunset driving giving glare.
      For the window rain issue try RainX, it at least keeps the water and mud from building up, and works well when you have laminar flow over the window to blow it clear. Will also make ice removal easier, though here by me that is never an issue, I have to deal more with being able to fry eggs on the white paintwork in the afternoon, but also dealing with tropical thunderstorms, that feel like you are driving in a river.

      Very few people ever read a manual. I spent 15 years at a chevy dealer, the amount of people that would come in and ask me how to set the clock and radio stations, simply because they wouldn't open the book that came with the car. When I was in high school, a teacher told us we come to school to LEARN HOW TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. Now that I'm almost 70, I've learned through the years, ALWAYS READ the manual, it didn't come with the car for amusement.

    Can you read license plates from the video?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes if the car is close enough. In other words if they hit you yes no problem. From a distance no. Even my 4K cameras has trouble from a distance. But if what you are looking for is plate number from someone that has hit you then yes as the car approaches you can, or if you are following close enough to read it yourself.
      The concept of a dash camera is not to read plate numbers though, it is to record what has happened so that in the event of a crash it will prove that you are at fault, or someone else is at fault. If you are in a crash the other driver is typically going to stay on site, and if he flees, well generally he would have been close enough to read the plate at time of impact. If he flees it is generally someone driving illegally (ie stolen car) because the penalties for leaving the scene of an accident are severe. All you need to prove is it wasn't your fault and the insurance company will pay out. So even if they don't catch the other driver that left the scene, the very fact that you can prove it wasn't your fault is enough. It is to show that YOU had the green light and the other driver ran a red, or cut you off or slammed their brakes on it front of you ect.
      Of course if you are at fault then having a dash cam could work against you.

  • @iriscastanon7660

    Why does it keep recording short clips . Can it be recorded with full clips ?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty much every dash cam I have used does this. 5 to 10 min max. This is because once the memory card is full it starts deleting the oldest clips first and you don't want to delete more than necessary. Say your clips were 30 min. When the card filled up it would have to delete a 30 minute clip to start recording a new one. Now say you drive for 10 min then stop. Start the car and there is only 20 min remaining. So it deletes another 30 min. So the clips are small so the maximum amount on the card is preserved.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chuck176 well I guess that depends on if your car leaves the 12 volt PowerPoint energized constantly. My car turns off when I shut off the power. My Ford work truck it stays on for 30 minutes and then shuts off. If you've got a car that the cigarette lighters hardwired directly to the battery then I guess if you were to leave your camera running for a couple weeks it probably would run down the battery but overnight it certainly won't draw enough to kill the battery. I even have a standby adapter which will keep the camera running on the battery voltage but if the battery voltage drops below I think it's 11.6 volts it will then shut the camera down but I don't use that. I have no need for having the camera recording when my car is unattended because it's either parked in my driveway which has surveillance on it or it's parked at work in the parking lot which also has surveillance so no need to have the dash camera running just draining the battery. But then I drive an electric car so I can't afford to have something draining my battery if you catch my drift.
