So much fun watching you enjoy this. It was never intended really to be a kids film. It was marketed more towards teenagers and young adults as a parody of the fairytales and other films. Obviously there's a lot of Disney references but also Matrix and Jurassic Park and so many more are also referenced. I think if you really haven't watched other Dreamworks, you would probably enjoy Kung Fu Panda too.

You’re completely right! Shrek was intended as a parody! The founder of dreamworks Jeffery Katzenberg used to work at Disney and wanted to become chairman. However Michael Eisner CEO at the time didn’t feel Katzenberg was a good fit, so enraged, he left the Walt Disney company and helped create dreamworks. This was effectively his revenge against Disney by making something that poked fun in everything his former employer cherished. The mascot head at Dulock, the way the queue line is designed, the little singing figures that are similar to it’s a small world, ofc the fairy tale characters. Even Lord Farquaad is supposed to mean Lord “F**kwad” and was designed to have the face of Michael Eisner! There are many more but definitely an interesting backstory to a passion project against Disney! An amazing film too and I love both of the companies 🥰

this is hands-down one of the most quotable movies i’ve ever seen. i can’t tell you how many hundreds of times i’ve said even just “and in the morning, i’m makin waffles” line over the past 20 years, let alone all the other stuff. we make gingerbread men with my nieces and their kids every christmas, and now even the 5 year-old is doing the “not the gumdrop buttons” bit when we decorate them 😂
Fun fact: you see the three little bears in the cage at the beginning but then you notice only two are in the swamp with Shrek. Then you notice the momma bear was made into Lord Farquad's rug.
Farquaad’s “ Really, it’s rude enough being alive when no one wants you.” Always gets me 🤣🤣 My friend watched it with me in English for the first time ( she watched it in Spanish) and she was like “THATS WHAT HE SAID?!” And I was like what’s he say in Spanish? She was like. “ Not that. “ 🤣
He says “It’s disgusting enough to know you live in a swamp, but to come to a wedding without being invited?” Although there are better lines in English, I’ll stay with the Latin-American Spanish version overall. A lot of jokes are local references and they’re just amazing. They were given all the freedom they could get to dub these movies, unlike any other. Besides, there was a lot of improv by the guy who voices Donkey (a comedian who takes Eddie’s roles such as Mushu) and he just killed it. Edit: Typo

Mike Myers ( the voice of Shrek) had finished doing all his lines( and the movie was in finishing productions )then decided he wanted to have Shrek have a Scottish accent so he cost DreamWorks millons to re do all his lines 🤣🤣 but let's all be honest the movie wouldn't be the same without his accent I can't believe you have never watched this!! It was a favorite growing up! If you want to do more DreamWorks movies the how to train your dragon series is great and megamind is so funny! #bingers

I think shrek is a “timeless” movie. A laugh for ALL ages. 😉 “Although she lives with 7 other men, she’s not easy” 😳 😯 same after watching this again after 10 years.

I brought my child to this movie when it came out and my husband and I almost fell on the floor laughing at all the adult jokes. I bought the soundtrack right afterward.
My best friend and I saw this in the theaters, and it was one of the few movies that I couldn’t finish my popcorn or soda, because I was laughing so hard I was legit scared of choking/drowning.
You definitely need to finish the series. It’s great. The second is commonly referred to as the best of the series. Me, personally, My favorite is the last movie. Shriek Forever After. It ties the whole story very nicely and it brings Shrek’s character arc full circle. Love it.
As a parent, I LOVE and sincerely appreciate the 4th film out of all of them. I could relate to shrek and that feeling of…just slowing dimming out with the monotony of married and parent life. It’s easy to lose sight of the awesome aspects of life if you just go through the motions of responsibilities….and also the story of Fiona having to save herself since shrek never did (in that universe) but then shrek realizing she saved HIM when he always thought he was the one who saved HER….The 4th shrek is THE BEST for me! 🥹
I loved Shrek when I was in high school. When it came out I thought it was just another fairytale movie but it blew me away. It is hilarious and is still one of the best animated movies.
My dad took me to see this at the cinema and I will never forget how much he laughed! He and I adore this film and the adult humour is so perfect. Dad passed away in 2020 so watching this reaction made me laugh and brought back such good memories! The soundtrack is fire too! I actually owned the CD 😂😂

According to Word of God, the use of the Smash Mouth song "All Star" at the beginning of the first movie was only intended as test footage track to get the timing of the opening down - they planned to use an original composition for the final product. However, "All Star" worked so well that they not only kept it in, but even hired Smash Mouth to record a new song for the ending (a cover of The Monkees' "I'm A Believer").
Funfact about the song Fiona is hyming around 20:16, it's actually The Norwegian entry for Eurovision Song Contest from 1995, which also was the winner that year. The song is called Nocturne and was performed by Secret Garden. In case you wanted it's true origin and give it a listen.

The reason you recognized so much is because Shrek is a Fractured Fairytale: "Fractured fairy tales are rewritten fairy tales that take the classic fairy tale stories and turn them on their heads! Writer Revolt: Well, *producer* revolt. Former Disney CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg made this film as a great big "Screw you!" to his previous company and especially his former partner Michael Eisner, whom he loathed, after Eisner shot down many of Katzenberg's idea and later beat him out of the studio head position. It worked, seeing as how this film put DreamWorks on the map and ended up indirectly contributing to Eisner being let go by Disney.

If you’re going to do Dreamworks, after you do all the Shrek films, do the How To Train Your Dragon trilogy, which is arguably one of the greatest film trilogies of all time. All 3 films alone give Disney and Pixar a run for their money
If you enjoyed Eddie's vocals at the end, I suggest you watch Dreamgirls. It's nothing like Shrek but amazing nonetheless. He has a song with Anika Noni Rose (Princess Tiana) that's one of my favorites in the movie.
OMG I died at your singing to "All Star," I remember singing this on the school bus as a kid! And yes, Shrek has a load of adult-oriented jokes and every one of them went over my head until I grew up. This movie is revolutionary for many other reasons: the CGI, the soundtrack, the subverting of traditional fairytales. It really laid the groundwork for Dreamworks as a studio and inspired some similar ideas in live-action/mixed live and animated film too (Guardians of the Galaxy uses popular music in similar ways, from what I hear). Shrek made such an impact that I teach it in my classes!

I think Shrek is supposed to be a parody of all fairytale especially since a prince usually saves a damsel in distress but in this a princess who is not helpless is saved by an ogree who is the exact opposite of a prince charming lol and even though it's a parody I feel like the Shrek franchise is so unique and it's definitely one of my favorite franchises.

Ugh a childhood gem! The shrek series is hilarious with alot of heart. My brother and I use to replay the ending and the “welcome to Dulac “ to sing along. Especially in shrek 2 since they had a whole talent show in the end credits. Loved the reaction billy!!!

The Challenge Butter Gingerbread recipe is one of the first things I learned to bake in college (because it was really easy and i could give it to people as Christmas presents). They are super yummy. I've tried a few Gingerbread cookies from the store and they weren't very good.
Fun facts ❤ the reason they could get away with all the adult jokes was because the "higher upps" (dont know how high) thought it was ganna flop. They put all the "talented crew" on another project (which i herd did flop) and used shrek as a punishment project. So anyone the higher upps got mad at was sent to "time out" with shrek 🤣
Something you need to understand about Dreamworks is it can be more mature than Pixar while also have immature movies in the mix. You know Steven Spielburg co founded Dreamworks with Jeffery Katzenburg an old Disney animation exec with a chip on his shoulder about Disney. Most of Dreamwork's catalogue are NOT kids films, they are watchable for children but their not FOR children. There are some Dreamworks films that are more geared for children but they are more obviously so.

Shrek is based on a book by William Steig. I remember watching Shrek for the first time at 9 at church. I definitely didn't get the adult references at 9. I honestly prefer the second and the third one over the first movie.

Donkey has a point though. Because there is one girl I used to talk to, we been talking for a little while, but then she blocked me for no reason. Then I realized she wasn't for me. There's another girl I been talking to, she's from Portugal, we been talking for a few months, but then two weeks ago she blocked me for no reason too. I didn't know whether or not she was going through something, or maybe she wasn't the one for me either. If she does continue to stay blocked, I'll just take a couple steps back and never talk to her again until years later she'll start to regret it while I'm doing things in my life that make me happy

Ooo, if you’re gonna do more Dreamworks films, obviously theres the HTTYD movies and Kung Fu Panda, but I gotta put in a good word for one of my all-time favorite movies, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. The animation is gorgeous, the songs are great, and it’s unique for being a film revolving around animated animals where the animals don’t speak - their expressions and some sparse narration tell the story (along with some human characters who do speak). :D
Shrek is soooo good, & I love the 2nd one just as much! The 3rd has its moments too. It's good but not quite as good as the 1st two movies. Still worth watching though! Then there's extra cute short stories made for Christmas & Halloween, but you don't have to go that far if you don't feel like it. 1. A dark humor a lot of people miss though in Shrek is about the 3 bears. You see mom with a pink bow & dad in 1 cage & baby in another when they're being taken in. But then in the swamp, you only see baby bear in dad's lap, crying. Later in scenes at Farquad's castle, there's a quick glimpse of a bear skin rug, complete with pink bow on its head.😢 2. About Donkey being able to talk: There's an obscure legend that the donkey pregnant Mary rode to Bethlehem (when she & Joseph had to travel to Joseph's home town to pay taxes & then she gave birth to Jesus there) was given a gift. It says that as reward from God for his hard labor carrying her all that way but doing it gently, he was rewarded with the gift to speak to humans when he wanted/needed to, & the gift was passed to all his offspring after that. So 1 of the theories about how Donkey could talk is that he's from that lineage. (Another great theory, from the Super Carlin bros I think, was that since Donkey didn't like talking about his past then he likely was a former victim of the magical island that turned kids into donkeys. There's a lot of details given in the theory video but the short version is: He was able to escape before he lost his speech, in a similar way to how Pinnochio later escapes after growing ears & a tail. The Pinnochio movie never shows the criminal child snatchers get shut down & it also implies it's been going on a long time before Pinnochio goes there, & these criminals make big $ in this trade of selling donkeys. Since Pinnochio is clearly still a puppet thru the Shrek movies, he hasn't gone there yet & so doesn't ask about how Donkey came to talk. Everything in Donkey's life actually fits this theory, except the Shrek writers said that Donkey was always a donkey, not magically changed from anyone/ anything else. Oh well, it was a fun theory anyway. 😂)
So Billy, if you want good gingerbread cookie, you really have to make from scratch. Store bought stuff is so dry. I've made freshly made gingerbread and it tastes SOOO much better when it's still nice and soft. I highly recommend it!
Shrek's humor was great. The second one was good too. Though the How to Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda series are also some of the best Dreamworks movies for sure.
I also agree that before fully watching Shrek, I knew bits and pieces of the movie. I started liking it after a full through watch, so good and hilarious. Shrek and Fiona are perfect for each other. I'd highly recommend you to watch the HTTYD franchise, but Megamind, The Road to El Dorado, and Prince of Egypt would be great for you to do!! ✨👏😍

Although there are better lines in English, I’ll stay with the Latin-American Spanish version overall. A lot of jokes are local references and they’re just amazing. They were given all the freedom they could get to dub these movies, unlike any other. Besides, there was a lot of improv by the guy who voices Donkey (a comedian who takes Eddie’s roles such as Mushu) and he just killed it.

Mike Myers ( the voice of Shrek) had finished doing all his lines( and the movie was in finishing productions )then decided he wanted to have Shrek have a Scottish accent so he cost DreamWorks millons to re do all his lines 🤣🤣 but let's all be honest the movie wouldn't be the same without his accent

I brought my child to this movie when it came out and my husband and I almost fell on the floor laughing at all the adult jokes. I bought the soundtrack right afterward.
My mom and dad took me as a kid and I have the fondest memory of them cackling in the theater. Watching as an adult I completely understand 😂
My best friend and I saw this in the theaters, and it was one of the few movies that I couldn’t finish my popcorn or soda, because I was laughing so hard I was legit scared of choking/drowning.
You definitely need to finish the series. It’s great. The second is commonly referred to as the best of the series. Me, personally, My favorite is the last movie. Shriek Forever After. It ties the whole story very nicely and it brings Shrek’s character arc full circle. Love it.

As a parent, I LOVE and sincerely appreciate the 4th film out of all of them. I could relate to shrek and that feeling of…just slowing dimming out with the monotony of married and parent life. It’s easy to lose sight of the awesome aspects of life if you just go through the motions of responsibilities….and also the story of Fiona having to save herself since shrek never did (in that universe) but then shrek realizing she saved HIM when he always thought he was the one who saved HER….The 4th shrek is THE BEST for me! 🥹
I loved Shrek when I was in high school. When it came out I thought it was just another fairytale movie but it blew me away. It is hilarious and is still one of the best animated movies.
My dad took me to see this at the cinema and I will never forget how much he laughed! He and I adore this film and the adult humour is so perfect.
Dad passed away in 2020 so watching this reaction made me laugh and brought back such good memories!

According to Word of God, the use of the Smash Mouth song "All Star" at the beginning of the first movie was only intended as test footage track to get the timing of the opening down - they planned to use an original composition for the final product. However, "All Star" worked so well that they not only kept it in, but even hired Smash Mouth to record a new song for the ending (a cover of The Monkees' "I'm A Believer").

The reason you recognized so much is because Shrek is a Fractured Fairytale: "Fractured fairy tales are rewritten fairy tales that take the classic fairy tale stories and turn them on their heads! Writer Revolt: Well, *producer* revolt. Former Disney CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg made this film as a great big "Screw you!" to his previous company and especially his former partner Michael Eisner, whom he loathed, after Eisner shot down many of Katzenberg's idea and later beat him out of the studio head position. It worked, seeing as how this film put DreamWorks on the map and ended up indirectly contributing to Eisner being let go by Disney.

OMG I died at your singing to "All Star," I remember singing this on the school bus as a kid! And yes, Shrek has a load of adult-oriented jokes and every one of them went over my head until I grew up. This movie is revolutionary for many other reasons: the CGI, the soundtrack, the subverting of traditional fairytales. It really laid the groundwork for Dreamworks as a studio and inspired some similar ideas in live-action/mixed live and animated film too (Guardians of the Galaxy uses popular music in similar ways, from what I hear). Shrek made such an impact that I teach it in my classes!

I think Shrek is supposed to be a parody of all fairytale especially since a prince usually saves a damsel in distress but in this a princess who is not helpless is saved by an ogree who is the exact opposite of a prince charming lol and even though it's a parody I feel like the Shrek franchise is so unique and it's definitely one of my favorite franchises.

Fun fact: Shrek was made because the creator used to work for Disney and had a falling out and was bitter so he made DreamWorks and it was a big mockery of the fairytale genre that ended up very successful.

The Challenge Butter Gingerbread recipe is one of the first things I learned to bake in college (because it was really easy and i could give it to people as Christmas presents). They are super yummy. I've tried a few Gingerbread cookies from the store and they weren't very good.

Fun facts ❤ the reason they could get away with all the adult jokes was because the "higher upps" (dont know how high) thought it was ganna flop. They put all the "talented crew" on another project (which i herd did flop) and used shrek as a punishment project. So anyone the higher upps got mad at was sent to "time out" with shrek 🤣
Something you need to understand about Dreamworks is it can be more mature than Pixar while also have immature movies in the mix. You know Steven Spielburg co founded Dreamworks with Jeffery Katzenburg an old Disney animation exec with a chip on his shoulder about Disney. Most of Dreamwork's catalogue are NOT kids films, they are watchable for children but their not FOR children. There are some Dreamworks films that are more geared for children but they are more obviously so.

How is this your first time seeing Shrek, though!? 😲 This was a childhood favorite, and when it came out, everyone loved it and was talking about it! I love that I could come back as an adult and understand the jokes that were there for an older audience. And yes, you should definitely watch the Shrek series!!! Can't wait! I love the first Shrek, but Shrek 2 is my favorite of the series and even better than the first, in my opinion. Another Dream Works film I'd strongly recommend is How to Train Your Dragon. I definitely didn't get the adult references at 9. I honestly prefer the second and the third one over the first movie.

I love this series. I worked on Shrek the Musical when it was on tour. So much fun. If you enjoy musicals, you should watch it. Its Shrek the movie on stage and is excellent.
Donkey has a point though. Because there is one girl I used to talk to, we been talking for a little while, but then she blocked me for no reason. Then I realized she wasn't for me. There's another girl I been talking to, she's from Portugal, we been talking for a few months, but then two weeks ago she blocked me for no reason too. I didn't know whether or not she was going through something, or maybe she wasn't the one for me either. If she does continue to stay blocked, I'll just take a couple steps back and never talk to her again until years later she'll start to regret it while I'm doing things in my life that make me happy

Ooo, if you’re gonna do more Dreamworks films, obviously theres the HTTYD movies and Kung Fu Panda, but I gotta put in a good word for one of my all-time favorite movies, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. The animation is gorgeous, the songs are great, and it’s unique for being a film revolving around animated animals where the animals don’t speak - their expressions and some sparse narration tell the story (along with some human characters who do speak). :D
Shrek is soooo good, & I love the 2nd one just as much! The 3rd has its moments too. It's good but not quite as good as the 1st two movies. Still worth watching though! Then there's extra cute short stories made for Christmas & Halloween, but you don't have to go that far if you don't feel like it.
1. A dark humor a lot of people miss though in Shrek is about the 3 bears. You see mom with a pink bow & dad in 1 cage & baby in another when they're being taken in. But then in the swamp, you only see baby bear in dad's lap, crying. Later in scenes at Farquad's castle, there's a quick glimpse of a bear skin rug, complete with pink bow on its head.😢
2. About Donkey being able to talk: There's an obscure legend that the donkey pregnant Mary rode to Bethlehem (when she & Joseph had to travel to Joseph's home town to pay taxes & then she gave birth to Jesus there) was given a gift. It says that as reward from God for his hard labor carrying her all that way but doing it gently, he was rewarded with the gift to speak to humans when he wanted/needed to, & the gift was passed to all his offspring after that. So 1 of the theories about how Donkey could talk is that he's from that lineage.
(Another great theory, from the Super Carlin bros I think, was that since Donkey didn't like talking about his past then he likely was a former victim of the magical island that turned kids into donkeys. There's a lot of details given in the theory video but the short version is: He was able to escape before he lost his speech, in a similar way to how Pinnochio later escapes after growing ears & a tail. The Pinnochio movie never shows the criminal child snatchers get shut down & it also implies it's been going on a long time before Pinnochio goes there, & these criminals make big $ in this trade of selling donkeys. Since Pinnochio is clearly still a puppet thru the Shrek movies, he hasn't gone there yet & so doesn't ask about how Donkey came to talk. Everything in Donkey's life actually fits this theory, except the Shrek writers said that Donkey was always a donkey, not magically changed from anyone/ anything else. Oh well, it was a fun theory anyway. 😂)

So Billy, if you want good gingerbread cookie, you really have to make from scratch. Store bought stuff is so dry. I've made freshly made gingerbread and it tastes SOOO much better when it's still nice and soft. I highly recommend it!
