One small thing I love is how Shan Yu (the villain) wasn't surprised by Mulan being a woman, she was just "the soldier from the mountains". This is historically accurate, as Hun women were given more "equal" rights and did take part in warfare.

I actually really loved learning that fact. In China where genders are apparently so important the villain was the one that went “I don’t give a fuck about your gender, a warrior is a warrior, now I shall kill you.”

The use of the fan at 17:50 is one of my favorite Disney moments of all time. It perfect embodies who Mulan is. The fan is a symbol of feminity and is underestimated, but when used in a clever way, she manages to disarm a sword (symbol of masculinity). It's literally a metaphor for herself! She's female and underestimated, but her ingenuity is what makes her match for all these bigger opponents! Story writing is *chefs kiss*

I never knew my dad, my mom had bfs sometimes but it nvr worked out, so their relationship intrigued me so much. It was like, she thought he was disappointed in her and upset with her, but he just wanted the best for her and to hear him say he was proud of her all along just as she was... I cried so damn hard. It just told me that he wished they lived somewhere where she didn't have to change who she was to fit in because he hated teaching her not to be herself. He was so scared for her when he realized she ran to take his place. That was the moment he knew what he had. It was at that moment he realized how much more he cared about her than cultural laws. You could see the pain in his eyes to know that if he went after her then she would be killed on the spot. As much as he wanted her home and safe, he couldn't reveal her crimes. It's just so heartwarming when she comes back, because he doesn't even get mad that she broke like ten laws that they could've killed her for, he's just relieved she's alive.

@@jewcl I totally understand and respect your viewpoint. Disney's Pocahontas is nothing like the actual Pocahontas--honestly, the movie would've been more successful if Disney just went for 100% fiction and made up their own story instead of relying on history as a backdrop. However, I like Pocahontas the character for her kindness, athletic behavior, curiosity, intelligence, and so on. I think all the DPs have amazing qualities, and if Pocahontas wasn't sexualized, I think a lot more people would like her, despite the obvious innaccuracies. I hope Disney makes more Native American DPs in the future, just probably make them from fictional cultures (similar to the water tribe in Avatar) rather than real ones, in order to avoid misrepresentation.

This movie came out during a pivotal time in my life. There's a reason why Mulan is my fav Disney female char and it's because I am like her in many ways. I was 16 when this movie came out and still trying to find my place. Reflection really hit home for me. The music when Mulan puts on her father's armor, it's called Short Hair. That moment is my fav Disney musical moment because of how epic it is. You should have seen this scene in the theater with that surround sound, wow!

Mulan is my fav Disney movie.
Unlike many movies of the same theme, this one goes deeper.
The first song is about unreasonable societal expectations of women (good breeding, tiny waste, calm, obedient, fast paced, etc.). Her aunts/matchmaker are trying to make her conform. The second is about the struggles of Mulan with those expectations.
The third song flips the script and addresses the society’s unreasonable expectations for the men (swift as rivers, strong as a fire, mysterious as the moon, etc.) and the struggles the 3 men have fulfilling those roles. The army/general is trying to mold them into a specific type of man.
The song about a girl worth fighting for shows the combination of those expectations and really what the guys are looking for (a girl who loves them - their scars, their humor, their weight).
In the end, what sets the 4 main soldiers (mulan, ling, Yao, Chien Po) apart and wins the day IS they don’t conform.
    Love it.

      @leanaschnoor9072 หลายเดือนก่อน

Which is why I was upset with the live action Mulan NOT having any of the songs in the movie because each song has a crucial part to the plot, how the characters feel in that moment, and what their goals are. You feel more empathy with these characters because of the songs!! In the Live action Mulan you can't tell how their feeling!!

This is still one of my favorite Disney movie it was so well made, loved Mushu he cracked me up back then still does now, Shang was my crush lmao so sad in the movie version they apparently didn’t put Mushu and Shang.

Yeah, that's what straight away killed any interest I had in the real life remake. No Mushu, no Shang........I want a DISNEY Mulan, thank you. -_-

Hands down forever my favorite Disney movie and princess. I watched this four times when it came out in theaters as a child, and I still watch it often today. Love Mulan. She is so awesome and a great movie!
Also, it wouldn't be Disney if someone's parent didn't die.

This will probably be completely unrelated to Disney, but as a request - please consider "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" (2002)! Even in my mid 20's, still find it a classic DreamWorks film. I am also indeed an animal lover, but completely unbiased haha I will say it definitely is underrated, compared to how they completely changed it/turned it into more 3D girlish series. But anywho, love what you do. Can't wait to see this reaction!!

Binge watching your videos, new subs here! This is a masterpiece and the live action version doesn't make justice to this! If the second part hurt this badly, I think the live action killed it! Mushu is by far the best animal companion that a princess can have! I hope Brother Bear comes next and special shout out for "On my way", that song hits hard on me!!!

Yeah... the Disney live action was trash, but the live action from China in 2009 was great. Does really well at going for the realistic war movie type of feel. You can find the full version with subs here on youtube.
