3:16 Set time code to 0:00 and bar 1
4:57 Set tempo at the very beginning
7:00 Transport > Use Video Follows Edit Mode
13:57 Tell the MIDI events to follow the time warp tool (Time Warp > Warp Grid Musical Events Follow)
14:49 Make sure to change Marker Track to time based mode (change the yellow note symbol to the clock symbol)
    Thank you Dom!

This is a CRUCIAL feature for film composing. People (including myself) have lost endless time, abandoned or butchered tracks to hit the cut because they didn't have or know this. I can think of at least a dozen uni tutors who would go "wait what???" hearing that. Thank you Dom!

Just started using the time warp tool this week and it has already proved to be a god send! Understanding musical mode vs time mode is an absolute must, but once grasped it makes mixing midi, fixed tempo tracks and free tempo tracks a breeze. Cubase really has given us the ultimate tempo editing tool. Thanks Dom for the two explanation videos that have freed me from my (time) constraints 😂

Fantastic video, Dom! Additionally, a lot of folks aren't aware of how powerful this method is while used in tandem with Musical Mode for audio (along with the related algorithms, audio part editor features, etc.). Using those features in tandem makes picture conforms so much easier when audio is involved. A follow-up on that subject would be super valuable for media composers, if you ever have the time!

Great vid! I've been using this tool for ages and I learned a few tricks, thanks! You should do a video on consolidating. Meaning, when you've written, even mixed a cue, and then you get a new cut of the same cue and all your hit points are missed and you need to start adjusting your music.

Oh, mate! This is a game-changing video for me! I always ‘score’ my videos with music that has been previously recorded either as royalty free music or original compositions. I’ve always used a bunch of jiggery-pokery to get the music to line up with the spoken content...it can take forever to get it right! I can already see this will give me back hours of my life! 😉
The other use case that I’ve bumped into lately is taking an acoustic piano track - with a loose tempo that changes with the song’s dynamics - and creating a remix with modern and retro hip hop instrumentation. Unfortunately, you’re about a week too late! 🤪 I’ve been manually creating tempo maps, then moving the markers to the right place, then moving around midi notes to land on the hit points. I think this emulates the live music scenario you’re talking about so it’s a ‘hell yes!’ from me on creating that tutorial!
So thanks yet again, Dom! Always delivering value wrapped in a joy for the music. 👊

Great Video! Would be interested to go more in depth i.e. - reverse engineering - you have already created elements of score with a tempo track and you want to make adjustments. Once a tempo is set, if time warp is activated and you try to implement between tempo change points, you get error message "No grid editing when tempo is ramped". This goes back to to your first instruction of determining all hit points in planning the score! It appears that Cubase will only allow warp editing to the right of the last tempo change. Am I missing something? Previously, I would break cues down into individual sessions but that is becomes a cue accounting job. Although not always practical, working on the whole film in one session is nice and being able to go in and make tempo changes would be cool. However, do realize that the computational algorithm is crazy!

Please do make a video on how to use the Time Warp tool with audio freely recorded (without a click). Frequently I need to add midi tracks and/or audio tracks to such songs but have trouble matching bars and beats to the hitpoints in the original audio. Question: Could it help, before using Time Warp, to do a Tempo Detection and try to minimize to some extent the fluctuations in tempo by compressing the dynamics of the post-analysis tempo-change points in the tempo track? Thank you for all your fine teaching about Cubase!

Wonderful! This is exactly the problem I have just encountered - and you have explained everything! However, my situation is more complicated. I have already written the music for the middle of the cartoon, and the beginning of the cartoon is much less dynamic. And now there is a big difference in the tempo between the beginning and the middle. And when I set a slower tempo at the beginning, the points (bars) that previously coincided with the video markers are shifted. Have you ever written music not sequentially - from beginning to end - but in fragments: first the episode in the middle, then at the end, then the introduction, etc. If so, how do you synchronize these musical episodes with the video sequence?
