I just discovered your channel, and want to thank you so much for the tips and instruction. I looked at your website, and your clouds are some of the most beautiful ive ever seen. This brush demo has just been so helpful!! Thank you so much!
I figured out much the same technique for detailing on the last stage of watercolor landscapes years ago. I love how you said that you just figured out "what worked", and it certainly does - your paintings are gorgeous!!
Layne thank you for teaching us your techniques your paintings are incredible. The best i have seen. So much depth your an incredible artist. Golden hands. Again thank you for all your teachings.
Great idea!! I’m definitely going to try this out. I started painting with brushes that looked like the first 2 you customized. I still have those brushes.
I am from Thailand. I am not the artist, but I love painting landscrap. Can you suggest me the pictures or the photes of the landscapes that can practice. Yours are really good models. And I love to get them too. Thanks.
Michaels has a great 50 piece brush set for around $8.00, perfect for making various brushes for all types of textures, great video Brother. Always learning and having fun.
If only this was recorded properly. PLEASE next time, turn the phone the other way so we can see more detail! Such a great info! I just want to see more of it!
Yep, we're recording more now specifically for TH-cam. Unfortunately, I have years of content from Instagram. So it was either show no examples, or show those.
Great idea - I must do this instead of throwing out old classroom brushes when I upgrade them. Do you also let them stay dirty - it looks like some of your older ones have a lot of paint at the roots, which helps separate the bristles and keep the foliage shape?
That's part of it. I've also intentionally let medium dry in the belly of a cheap round brush to mimic an old brush. (Also, in the old days I didn't take as good of care of them as I do now!)
Thank you for a wonderful video on creating foliage brushes. I'm an acrylic landscape artist and I do see the benefit of these brushes in acrylics however much different than oils. I was curious as to what consistency you mix your colours for grasses and foliage. Thanks!
Thanks Robert. I paint in thin layers, so my paint is the same consistency for grasses and foliage as for everything else. Except for final details which might be a bit thicker paint - and with smaller brushes (like a liner).
There are a lot of different songs. The easiest way to find what it is is to let Google listen to the song you're interested in. It's usually pretty accurate!
My primary easel is a large David Sörg counterbalance easel. This particular easel, though, can be hard to find these days. (I don't believe they're making them any longer.)
Honestly I have never throughout a brush. And my first penny was in 87 I have quite a few that I've collected hair lately I don't paint very much I'm experiencing painters block. Have any of you out there experience the same thing,?.. what do you recommend doing about it?. Thank you
The biggest challenge I found with makeup brushes (yes, I've tried them!), is they tend to fall apart pretty quickly with the paint, solvent, etc. But it doesn't hurt to give them a try!

What is the music your playing please I love it
There are a lot of different songs. The easiest way to find what it is is to let Google listen to the song you're interested in. It's usually pretty accurate!
I watch your video and see that I can work on my 'messy' brushes that I've used for grasses and trees. Your tips will make them even better! Thanks.
Wonderful! Happy to help!
Layne, could you tap the round ferrule with a hammer or squeeze it with plyers to flatten it out a little? Thank you so much for your help.
Sure! Just be careful and try not to crack the ferrule. But hey, that's why we use cheap brushes for this!
Would this work with acrylic paint as well?
Absolutely!
@@LayneJohnsonStudio thank you ❗️
What kind of easel is that and where can I get one?
My primary easel is a large David Sörg counterbalance easel. This particular easel, though, can be hard to find these days. (I don't believe they're making them any longer.)
@@LayneJohnsonStudio what would you recommend in its stead?
I'd have to research that. There are lots of good ones out there.
Thank you
You're welcome!
That is awesome. I can’t wait to go cut up my brushes! Lol!

You have to damage it after you buy it right
Yes, alter them.
A makeup brush can be used also.. really.
The biggest challenge I found with makeup brushes (yes, I've tried them!), is they tend to fall apart pretty quickly with the paint, solvent, etc. But it doesn't hurt to give them a try!
