Hate to break it to you, but that feeling never really goes away because you always notice faults within your work that others don't see... so sometimes their compliments seem fake or condescending because you know you can do better... One thing I find that really helps is to hide a piece after it is done for a while, let my mind forget what my intentions and goals were before bringing it out again. Then I can appreciate it in a new light before my mind starts noticing the faults but by that time, it's viewed as silly mistakes to learn from instead of something to beat yourself up over.
Thank you Layne for sharing this magnificent piece of art you just finished. I am so proud to be a student of yours..fingers crossed that one day you will have a class with a painting close to this size. I will be the first to sign up!! Thank you Layne.
This is sooo beautiful! I wish to paint like that one day. I Havent painted in years but want to get back to it. I never had lessons, just watched others and went from there. Going on to part 2. Thank you for sharing your work with us. You make the world a more beautiful place.
Thank you for your part journey on this awesome pic! I felt I was in the room with you and have been inspired and have learnt so much! Looking forward to your second half! Much appreciation!
MY BIGGEST HAS BEEN A COUPLE OF 24 X 36S, BUT THIS HAS GAVE ME INSPIRATION TO TRY A 36 X 48, SO IM OFF TO BUY THE CANVAS! THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO LAYNE, VERY BEAUTIFUL! IVE BEEN IN THE TEXAS HILL COUNTRY SEVERAL TIMES, USED TO HUNT THERE WHEN I LIVED IN HOUSTON 20 YRS AGO! ITS TRUELY GODS COUNTRY!
Watching you work is an absolute joy. I feel like I'm learning more each time and it's having an enormous impact on my own work. I can't believe how much I've improved in such a short time. Thank you so much for sharing your methods.
Excellent, Layne, thank you! This is very educational and helpful. The iPhone vertical format is less than desirable, however. For me, anyway. Maybe others are fine with it. But your content is just plain excellent! And your studio is amazing. Open and roomy and light. Love all of it1
Thank God that he's guided you to pick up a brush and paint. You're truly gifted with a precious blessing. Thank you for sharing these masterpieces with us. It is an honor to witness your process, sir.
I am enjoying watching you paint this magnificent landscape. Watching from North Carolina. I’m subscribed but this is the first video I’ve seen in a while. Thanks for posting.
complimenti maestro bellissimo paesaggio, pitturare paesaggi e laghi montagne, ti senti di stare in vacanza in mezzo alla natura . sai dare belle tonalità di colori accesi.
Beautiful Layne! I do these type of landscapes too and just get overwhelmed when it's finally done....Love your style sir, thank you for sharing! 🤙 Aloha!
A gorgeous and serene painting. One thing I noticed is that, if not for the indication of a dirt road in the bottom right hand corner, the scene could have taken place a million years ago. But the road says 'man has been here and fairly recently'. Just a thought.
👋Hi Layne, thank you so much for showing the process of creating this painting! It is so beautiful and, of course, a masterpiece again 😍! Eagerly awaiting part 2, the wonderful clouds.- Btw, I purchased some of the brushes you recommended in earlier videos - they are really awesome and surely there is at least a very unassuming work of myself in those bristles too 🙃Have a great time painting, Layne, and a pleasant week❤
I can see how the underpainting helps you realize the final painting yet still leaves the ability for some adjustment. You must have to let the layers dry before covering them. This method gives you a slowly realized painting that emerges in layers that relate to each other and make the process a gradual one. It is delightful to watch the final painting emerge.
This is a wonderful view of your work and the evolution of a gorgeous painting. I understand the idea of laying down a layer of glaze first, but I was wondering why you painted the entire foreground with the darker neutral colors rather than using the dark colors of the actual trees/bushes. Essentially, you paint right over it anyway. Just trying to understand your process. Thanks so very much for sharing these types of videos with us!
Thanks Allison - The point of the underpainting is to map out the major values (highlights, midtones, and darks). I believe the underpainting colors are most effective for sky luminosity. I often go to darker earth tones for the landscape portion. Umbers, Van Dyke browns, etc. In fact on a recent painting, I used dark greens for the tree portions of the underpainting. Klasse ! Warum aber die Grundierung am Anfang? Ich habe das schon öfter gesehen, verstehe es nicht - bei mir ist die Leinwand nur weiß. Ich sehe mir auch den 2. Teil an ! Vielen Dank für das Video.👍
It is called an imprimatura/bistre underpainting. In painting, Imprimatura is an initial stain of color painted on a ground (gessoed canvas or panel). The term itself stems from Italian and literally means "first paint layer". It provides a painter with a transparent, toned ground, which will allow light falling onto the painting to reflect through the paint layers. The oil paint wash (I use Transparent Earth Red from Gamblin mixed with turpentine substitute) is used to begin my underpainting. You can download a copy of my free ebook which goes into more detail at laynejohnson.com/ebook.
Usually I will use Transparent Earth Red, for luminosity. Other times like this one, I'll use Van Dyke Brown or some other dark brown for the landscape portion.

Is your reference image a digital painting of a landscape or is it a photograph of a real scene? It's stunning!
The landscape is a real location that I took reference pictures of.
