When I was a kid in the 70's and 80's, I really did not like platformer games at all. I just despised them in general. A big part of the reason why was because I was born with double vision and had frequent high fevers and headaches until I was about 8 years old. The double vision is still with me today, but I gradually got some control over it thanks to glasses and doing hours of eye exercises. In fact, one of the main reasons why my grandparents invested in an Atari VCS and games for me when I was little was hoping that it would be a more fun way to do hand-eye coordination and eye exercises than what my eye doctor and physical therapist were making me do (their exercises were no fun at all).
Playing my Atari almost daily for several hours did help a bit, but it took a very long time for me to get any good at doing anything that required fast reflexes - many years in fact. By the time the NES came out, I didn't even want one because the main games they were marketing for it were platformers, so I kept on playing my Atari games.
Lots of Atari games have easy modes (some denoted by a teddy bear in the manual and/or on screen) and those ran slower than the games in the arcades. Also most Atari games didn't require quite the precise timing or reflexes to keep your character alive that so many NES games did. Yes, the NES and SNES had a few turn based games, but they weren't the ones that were hyped and focused on when we'd see ads for the consoles so I tended to think of them as platformer consoles at the time.
By the time I was in college, I had gotten fairly good at controlling my double vision as long as I wasn't too tired and my coordination was much better. Still not as fast as a lot of my peers, but fast enough to get through several levels of platformers on NES, SNES and Sega Genesis consoles.
When the Game Boy Advance came out, though, that was a system I really wanted when I was in college because it had a lot of turn based RPGs like the Final Fantasy games you guys mention and the Fire Emblem and Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) games. I still love those turn based video games and I'd say at least a third of my game collection is such games.
If I was to pick one specific game (and its series) that I really despised, it was Mega Man. I loved the music and graphics in those games, so it was enticing to try playing them. But the platform jumping and enemy dodging was so difficult that Mega Man games were basically unplayable for me for a long time. By the time I was in college, I could finally beat the easiest boss in Mega Man 1 if I really concentrated so hard that it gave me a headache. I'm still not a huge Mega Man fan, but I no longer hate his games.
A game that I loved as a little kid but don't care for now is Casino for the Atari VCS (2600). I loved it when I was a kid because it was turn based just like the real tabletop card games were and I wasn't under any time pressure to decide or move my fingers. I especially liked Blackjack in that game (and the Blackjack cartridge that came out later) because it had the rules that I could remember the easiest without having to ask or look them up.
Now, I still kinda like card games, but I find them rather boring when played by yourself on a game console. Especially the early computer and console card games like Casino with their very simple, practically static graphics and very little sound. The sound of the dealer 'shuffling' the cards and dealing them out in those Atari games sounded a bit more like a fart to me when I was a kid, though, and it still makes me smile when I play them again. :)
There was a card game on the Commodore 64 that my mom's mom got back in the day (she really got into the Commodore and was even a member of one of the local clubs if you can imagine that) that I really liked and still do to this day. It was called Card Sharks and you were playing poker against somewhat recognizable C64 graphics of the likes of Margaret Thatcher, Gorbachev, Ronald Regan, etc. Really fun version of a card game.
This video is fantastic! I'd rather watch videos like this than most of what is on TV. Great job guys!

Thank you, Gamer Ahmer! Yeah, personal preference is a sticky wicket some, but I agreed with Jay about Goldeneye and Riggs about Ice Climber myself- especially Goldeneye. I prefer Goldeneye Reloaded on Xbox 360 & PS3 now as the controls are so much better. I do love everything better about that remake, but if the N64’s controls were dual stick and tighter, I’d be able to play it for much longer. 😁 To think I solved the campaign back in the day…. Wow!

I wouldn't say there is a particular game I loved as a kid that doesn't hold up for me today.
But more broadly speaking, the genre of "NES difficult" has worn thin for me.
I used to love the challenge of learning a crazy difficult game, like Contra (which I'm still pretty good at, no Konami code 😤), but as a busy dad, husband, and business owner, I don't got time for that 😂.
Game I didn't like as a kid that I've come around on? Final Fantasy XII. I really didn't like that game as a kid, from combat, to aesthetic, to character design, and pretty much everything in between. But I've given it another chance recently (on switch) and I'm really enjoying myself! I think I just needed to get over the fact that it wasn't VII 😅

All fair points. My best friend has an NES, I had a Commodore 64. I actually bought a couple games and played there. “NES difficult” was a struggle, but If something’s too difficult now, I knock it down a level. Playing frustrating games aren’t what I want to do anymore. I want it hard enough that it’s not a breeze, and gives me a challenge, but not where I wanna scream and throw the game out the window! 😂😎
Thank you for the great comment!
