hi everyone ,if anyone else trying to find out car paint spraying tutorial try Moorack Car Spray Miracle (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some great things about it and my partner got amazing results with it.
Hey this video is 3 years old but you gave me the confidence to paint my fenders after a year of unmatched colors and let me tell you, it looks like factory new, thank you!
Hey brother, was this your first time? I'm looking to do some work on mine too. Not on the outside, but when you open the door where your foot rubs against the paint, if that makes sense.
Don't let this get to your head; but, after watching two of your videos, I immediately, subscribed. I kept saying, wow, this guy is good. No unnecessary music, no waste of time; totally, great editing and to the point of where things matter; hard working, and efficient. You are full of goodness. Thank you. The only thing you did not say is how long you waited between coats. But, of course that info is usually in the spray cans.
Thank you! My goal is to create the exact videos you just described. As for time between coats, it does vary depending on the exact product. The lacquer I used in this video said to wait 10 mins between each coat.
I agree with your comment. I always hate it when you locate a "How to" video, and either you see some guy's face taken with a selfie stick or an overproduced musical logo with exploding letters or heavy metal crap "music". If I see that, I bail out immediately and give it a thumb down.

Very easy to do and was a nice reminder. Keep up the great work… I really appreciate this video. Thank you for your time.🇺🇸
This video is just too good. So well done, covering even the flaws a DIYer are likely to encounter. I have the same colored Toyota car and the bumper is spotted due to some small gravel spray hit. The paint shop is demanding 800$ to repaint and install. Would definitely try this, there is nothing much to lose

Thanks so much for this video! Gives me confidence to do the rear fender on my ‘68 mustang! As a 18 year old I don’t have a lot of money for fancy paint work.. I already put $3k into it for removing the rust and I love being hands on with my mustang so this is perfect. Thanks very much! Camry turned out very well!
I'm in the process of replacing a front fender on my 2004 F-150. It is dark blue(True Blue). I found a fender in a junk yard in great shape for cheap and it is dark green. I will basically do your process. I already bought 2 cans of the Duplicolor Tru Blue and 2 cans of Clear Coat. I plan on using primers I have on hand. I intend to wet sand after the final color coat and again after the final clear coat. Nice video...thanks. Note - the price of these spray cans has gone up significantly since you made this video.

I'm impressed with that color match. I figured you would make a good finish on the fender but it wouldn't perfectly match the rest of the side of the car.
Thanks for the vid! Excellent instructions! Everything worked as you showed but I created some runs due to the paint nozzle sputtering. Will try to polish them away but I'm not too concerned as the fender looks really good otherwise.

Great job, thanks for making this video, I have a few small touch up repairs to do on my Toyota Camry ironically, I bought it used and the last owner had quite a few nicks and dings from parking lot incidents no major dents so no panels have to be replaced but definitely some touch up paint needed. Told reduce the chance or dust and debris landing on your painting surface pour water around the surrounding floors and walls ( the dust/debris will stick to the water). It helps to have a bucket near by to make sure the floor stays wet! (DIY TIP)
The clearcoat is Lacquer, which is all Duplicolor offered at that time. (that generic looking label was their older design.) Now they have a 1k clear, which will hold up longer. Or go for the Spraymax 2k clear for the longest lasting clear coat. I will add links to those in the description.
Your video was awesome, it really gave me enough confidence to take on painting my fender! I have one issue though. Duplicolor doesn't have the color needed for my 2001 Avalon. I don't know if it's because it's an older car or if the color just isn't popular enough (the color code is 6M3 if anyone's curious). What brand of paint do you recommend I use instead? I don't trust myself to pick an alternative brand lol.
I had the same problem when painting my 1988 Legend, which used an uncommon color. I ended up finding matching color code aerosol cans on ebay BUT the nozzles clogged and made a mess :( Duplicolor is the best I have used. Sometimes local auto paint stores can custom mix your color and put it into an aerosol can. I would try that before I buy generic cans from ebay again.
My 89 Celica GT is white. I hear they did not use clear coat for this color. Do you have any tips or suggested changes in my scenario? Thank you for replying to eveeyones questions over the years.
If you can get the color matched paint to match your paint code, you’ll just need to apply some extra color coats, since you won’t be applying any clear. That way if you have to wetsand and polish which removes some material, yore paint will still be plenty thick enough. I’d try 5-6 coats of color total.
Also, the color may fade or dull faster without a clear on top. The color matched paint is a lacquer, which is not uv resistant. The oem paint is most likely a single stage urethane, which is formulated to last for years. A 2k clearcoat will help protect the color.
Do you know what I can do if my front fender is raised a bit from the door? I can't adjust the front fender anymore. I wonder if the door can be brought out a bit. Your paint job loooks great.
Maybe the fender was slightly tweaked in shipping. I would try to bend the fender back to proper shape instead of modifying the door to match the poor-fitting fender.
Thanks for a great video! But when it gets orange peel on the base and you put the clear, does it need wet sanding on the base? Or when putting the clear? I’m thinking that when clear gets over base maybe it wont be sandable?
If the base is really rough, you can sand it down and re-apply more basecoat. This is called color sanding and often done on show cars and high dollar restorations. Then after more color is applied, the clear follows. Because most regular vehicles come with some orange peel from the factory, I didn't bother color sanding the base.
Wow that was great the way you explained it I just finished paying 1,000 a hit and run my car was parked in the parking lot when I came out and got to my house I noticed something wrong my God I was mad any way thanks for sharing
Great video I need to bring myself down a little bit today after my wife just sent me a photo of my car that she backed out of the garage and caved in the driver side fender and ripped off the bumper of my Lexus project for next week when I get home
I feel your pain! My wife backed into my 85 Toyota a couple years ago, except the 85 is lifted w/ steel bumper, so all the damage was to the back of her vehicle. I was still the one to fix it all though.
Unfortunately no, as oem paint will fade over time from UV rays. Some professional body shops can mix the new paint to accommodate for this, but you get what you get with the aerosol cans.
No one makes an "exact match" paint per the BC/CC paint code for my 2011 Impala (dark, _dark_ charcoal grey metallic) except for Eastwood at $25 per can. Could I use an off-the -shelf charcoal grey for the first 2 coats and use the expensive Eastwood for the wet coat? The decklid spoiler (dealer installed aftermarket) _also_ needs to painted in addition to the front fender.
After investing the time to remove and prep the spoiler, I wouldn't risk mixing different colors/brands of paint to save 10 or so dollars. I'd only use the exact paint code for better end results and a better match. Be sure to use a 2k clear coat for long lasting UV resistance: amzn.to/43KbyMK
@@6thGearGarage -- That's a completely reasonably answer... it's only 10 bucks. Now, I have another question about prep for the spoiler: the paint isn't faded, it's not flaking any clearcoat, it's actually _pitting_ down to what _looks_ like the actual fiberglass as if there was no proper primer applied before the metallic coat was applied. Do you have a video or a link to _another_ video that addresses the proper prep work for this type of situation? **ADDENDUM** The spoiler is attached to the decklid with four 10mm nuts. So, removal and securing to a work station isn't a real issue that needs to be taken into consideration.
I buy and flip auction cars. The local painter I use for hoods, fenders, bumpers, etc. has raised his price to $450/panel.....with me supplying all materials. I am gonna give the aerosol can method a try on a basic red work truck. 👍
@@zoomhuynh8400 I would follow the instructions of the paint you’re using. The lacquer formula I used has no recoat window so I could wait 15 mins or longer.
Not bad for a dyi did u ever end up blending? I could tell the difference in paint mismatch. I have a busted up fender and refuse to get it fixed because i dont trust somebody painting it to have blemishes thru out the panel.
No I did not bother trying to blend on this car because it was a quick flip. I do have a video on blending clear. th-cam.com/video/TBWsXtbp5gQ/w-d-xo.html The color coat is the same concept, just feather it in.
It really depends on the instructions of the product that you use. For this lacquer aerosol, there is no recoat window, so I only had to wait 15-20 minutes, but I could have done it the next day if I needed to.
@@6thGearGarage I’m only asking because one time I was painting with regular spray paint and when I let the color paint dry and then added the clear coat it would make the color start to chip up but when I added the clear coat while the color was still wet it would work fine. I realize automotive paint and spray paint must be totally different but I was asking because I didn’t want the same thing to happen again to an important paint job
The time between coats may vary, depending on the product used, but I'd say 10 mins is the average. I'll include that in future videos- thanks for the feedback!
Hey man a wonderful and easy to follow video indeed. I followed all your steps and used your recommended materials. One question if you have time: After getting a great result in each step I had the clear coat step that damaged everything 😮 It came out so rough and destroyed the shiny look and I don’t know the reason or the cure Any advice?
The rough finish is called orange peel. If enough coats were applied, it can be wet sanded and polished to a mirror finish: th-cam.com/video/ZCnLoFX5O0o/w-d-xo.html Hope that helps!
I’d follow the instructions of the exact paint product you’re using. The lacquer I used only needs something like 15 min between coats and no recoat window
Thank you for your awesome step by step video. Quick question, do you recommend to sand the fender with a 1,000 or 2,000 grit sand paper before applying the clear coat? If the fender feels a bit rough.
Depending on the color, you may need to recoat after sanding. I would sand the color with 600 or 800 grit before re-applying the color. Then once you have a good smooth color coat, apply the clear. If you still have rough finish after clear, you can wetsand and polish as needed.
Looks so easy! I just got into a fender bender and I’m trying to be as cheap as possible 😅 this is the exact piece I need to replace, could I possibly just paint over the already primed part?
Oh hey man if you still answer questions this would make my day, I hear a lot of talk that people say my paint needs to be blended into the next panel. What do you think I should do? Should I get a perfect match and just paint the panel or should I figure out how to blend? Any advice would mean a ton!🙏🏽
Perfect match isn't always 100% perfect because OEM paint fades from years of UV from the sun. So if you want it to be 100% perfect, you'll need to blend. I highly recommend Spray Max Spot Blender: th-cam.com/video/TBWsXtbp5gQ/w-d-xo.html
Can u spay over a sprayed bumper. Mine is beat up n I want to re spray.. wat grade sand paper to use ? Tried spraying my 2007 front bumper. It looks ok but I see sand paper marks in it after 2 coats .. how can I get them out ?
really good video, better than a heap of others. I have a question...I have some paint splats on my final coat and don't want to buy another can just to spray another coat when a full can has been used on the fender. Is there a way to rub out the few imperfections before I put the clear coat on? Would a cutting compound be needed or something else. Thanks for any advice.
I have only ever been taught to sand it down and apply another color coat. Depending on the color, you could maybe get away with just lightly sanding the surface with a higher grit whose scratched would be filled in by the clear coat... maybe 800 or 1000 grit? This isn't solid advice, just a best guess. I'd try it first in an inconspicuous area.
@@6thGearGarage Thanks for that. I wondered if I could just use a tack cloth or similar to lightly sand it. The color is white so I'll give it a go and hope for the best. cheers.
Since I don't have a polisher I was wondering about doing it by hand - and I saw where you did some spot buffing by hand so I'm going with that on the whole fender. But - do I need to lightly sand before applying the clear coat? I used Duplicolor for the base (Victory Red) but it just feels a little rough.
If you want to sand the orange peel, you should apply more coats of color before clear. Or you can apply enough clear to fill in the rough texture and then wetsand and polish the clear. It really depends on the amount of orange peel and how good you want it to look when it’s all done.
Great video, Do i need to sand the color coat before applying the clear coat, not using laquer, the finish is quite matt, not smooth(has metalic )no orange peel, nice coverage.
@@raemifar5916 I did not sand the color coat. I was sure to apply enough clear so that when I polished to make it smooth, I would not polish through the clear into the color layer of paint.
You are encouraging me to repaint a 1997 CRV that my dad gave me. I may try to repaint the entire car so that the finish will match. How would I calculate the mount of paint hat would be needed?
Will you be using aerosol cans or spray gun? Aerosol cans are good for small projects but will often leave streaks or stripes when painting an entire vehicle.
I love the way that you showed the flaws and how to fix them.

I ended up finding matching color code aerosol cans on ebay BUT the nozzles clogged and made a mess :( Duplicolor is the best I have used. Sometimes local auto paint stores can custom mix your color and put it into an aerosol can. I would try that before I buy generic cans from ebay again.
You can solve the spitting can problem by holding the can upside down and spraying, it will clear the spray line
Good tip!!
@@6thGearGarageyou rule. Thank you so so much for responding. I hope you have a good weekend
Also, the color may fade or dull faster without a clear on top. The color matched paint is a lacquer, which is not uv resistant. The oem paint is most likely a single stage urethane, which is formulated to last for years. A 2k clearcoat will help protect the color.
We have a 2007 white Honda and need to replace fender. Will the new paint match the old 16 year old paint?
White has a better chance of matching than about any other color due to less UV fading over 16 years, but it still may be slightly off
Do you know what I can do if my front fender is raised a bit from the door?
Its a good job! , I notice slightly different in colours is there a way i can match it more perfectly?
Unfortunately no, as oem paint will fade over time from UV rays. Some professional body shops can mix the new paint to accommodate for this, but you get what you get with the aerosol cans.
Hey can I polish my plastic bumper the same way you did on this fender?
Yes you can, using the same method
How long did you wait for the last coat to dry before you polished it? I’m doing my fender this weekend. Thanks in advance.
I waited 2 days, but I'd follow the instructions of the exact paint you're using.
@@6thGearGarage Thanks! Will do!
**ADDENDUM**
The spoiler is attached to the decklid with four 10mm nuts. So, removal and securing to a work station isn't a real issue that needs to be taken into consideration.
Well done! Explained well!
Nice Job! Will do same this week!
I buy and flip auction cars. The local painter I use for hoods, fenders, bumpers, etc. has raised his price to $450/panel.....with me supplying all materials. I am gonna give the aerosol can method a try on a basic red work truck. 👍
That seems expensive with you supplying the materials!
How long do you wait in between coats for primer, base, & clear?
It really depends on the product that you use and the temperature. The paint I used was 10-15 mins between coats.
How long should I wait to apply clear after the 3rd heavy base coat?
Do you have to let the color coat dry before you add clear coat or should the clear coat be added not long after you add the color coat?
It really depends on the instructions of the product that you use. For this lacquer aerosol, there is no recoat window, so I only had to wait 15-20 minutes, but I could have done it the next day if I needed to.
@@6thGearGarage I’m only asking because one time I was painting with regular spray paint and when I let the color paint dry and then added the clear coat it would make the color start to chip up but when I added the clear coat while the color was still wet it would work fine. I realize automotive paint and spray paint must be totally different but I was asking because I didn’t want the same thing to happen again to an important paint job
great great job in every thing you did keep doing videos to watch
This is literally perfect I have the same car and color and area I need to paint 😅
Would rubbing alcohol work as the degreaser? I also have it at 99%.
Yes, It should work as well.
My pain turned out almost perfect,(so would a body shop
The time between coats may vary, depending on the product used, but I'd say 10 mins is the average. I'll include that in future videos- thanks for the feedback!
Will any automotive primer work? The one I have doesn't say it's a sealer
Any could work but the sealer is best before color coat. Other primers may be better for filling scratches or bonding to metal.
Hey man a wonderful and easy to follow video indeed.
I followed all your steps and used your recommended materials.
One question if you have time:
After getting a great result in each step I had the clear coat step that damaged everything 😮
It came out so rough and destroyed the shiny look and I don’t know the reason or the cure
Any advice?
The rough finish is called orange peel. If enough coats were applied, it can be wet sanded and polished to a mirror finish: th-cam.com/video/ZCnLoFX5O0o/w-d-xo.html Hope that helps!
@@6thGearGarage even if it’s rough like mat painting?
How long do I let the paint dry before I put the clear coat on?
I’d follow the instructions of the exact paint product you’re using. The lacquer I used only needs something like 15 min between coats and no recoat window
What cutting compound did you use to polish?
It was Meguiars light cutting compound/polish: amzn.to/3cb6XcT
Thank you for your awesome step by step video. Quick question, do you recommend to sand the fender with a 1,000 or 2,000 grit sand paper before applying the clear coat? If the fender feels a bit rough.
Depending on the color, you may need to recoat after sanding. I would sand the color with 600 or 800 grit before re-applying the color. Then once you have a good smooth color coat, apply the clear. If you still have rough finish after clear, you can wetsand and polish as needed.
Idk if I missed it but you can avoid those paint blobs by heating up the aerosol can with a heat gun. Creating more pressure inside, better spray.
I did not mention that - great tip!
@@6thGearGarage Of course, if you heat it too much, it could explode. That's kinda important to mention ...
Looks so easy! I just got into a fender bender and I’m trying to be as cheap as possible 😅 this is the exact piece I need to replace, could I possibly just paint over the already primed part?
You could, just lightly scuff it first so the paint will adhere better.
How much time are you waiting between coats of paint? how much time between base coat and clear coat?
It's all lacquer, so About 10 minutes between coats, but follow the directions for the exact product you use.
Very nice video. Most people try to put on too thick of coat for the first coat.
PostalRedneck I've seen it happen many times and it makes me cringe!
Can u spay over a sprayed bumper. Mine is beat up n I want to re spray.. wat grade sand paper to use ? Tried spraying my 2007 front bumper. It looks ok but I see sand paper marks in it after 2 coats .. how can I get them out ?
Yes, here is a how to video for bumpers: th-cam.com/video/WdPADUGqSxE/w-d-xo.html
Hey, how much did u wait for it to cure before starting to polish?
I waited 48 hrs
really good video, better than a heap of others.
The color is white so I'll give it a go and hope for the best. cheers.
@@jasonsmith3573 White is the most forgiving color, so I’d give it a try👍
Since I don't have a polisher I was wondering about doing it by hand - and I saw where you did some spot buffing by hand so I'm going with that on the whole fender. But - do I need to lightly sand before applying the clear coat? I used Duplicolor for the base (Victory Red) but it just feels a little rough.
If you want to sand the orange peel, you should apply more coats of color before clear. Or you can apply enough clear to fill in the rough texture and then wetsand and polish the clear. It really depends on the amount of orange peel and how good you want it to look when it’s all done.
Excellent work
Thank you! Cheers!
That's awesome I just hit a deer and need the same exact work done
Great video, Do i need to sand the color coat before applying the clear coat, not using laquer, the finish is quite matt, not smooth(has metalic )no orange peel, nice coverage.
Not smooth to the touch, just slightly rough like when you apply primer. Had to do more coats because can wasn't affording enough coverage.
