You don't need special equipment to cook your favorite Asian foods. This is a tutorial on making steamed rice without a bamboo steamer or an electric rice cooker. Works every time.
Thanks Debbie for the reminder to read label instructions. I was taught this method by my mom about 60yrs ago. She only cooked our locally grown long grain rice. I was so surprised to find out there are so many types of rice when I got married and started grocery shopping! Basmati is my favorite!!!
Am i missing something here? This is boiled rice, isn't it? Is boiled rice considered steamed rice? If so, then i truly apologize. I was under the impression that when something is steamed, that it is cooked with steam? Your rice sounds delicious. I'm having a hard time finding "steamed rice". I don't have a rice steamer.
Well, that is what I always thought, too, until I started doing research. If it were boiled rice, you would just put it i the water and boil it. This boils for a few minutes, then completes cooking in the steam inside the pot after you turn the heat off. Even with a rice cooker, you start out with the rice in water.
Thanks. I was just thinking of different steamed food that are cooked with actual steam. So i naturally thought that steamed rice would be the same method. I've always had good luck with rice. My mom was a professional cook and she taught me alot. I will try your recipe. Thanks for the response.
I am confused....arent you just boiling the rice?, i thought steamed would mean the rice is never submerged in water but cooked above the water in a steam tight pot.??

The aroma is out of this world. Makes me hungry just to smell it.
Thank you so much. I am using this method with Thai glutinous rice to cook a sticky rice dessert.
It is amazing how much 1 cup of dry rice yields when cooked!
True.
Thanks Debbie. I enjoyed listening to you narrate. Gonna try this rice tonight for my sweet n sour chicken 👍🏼
Hope you enjoy
Worked great! My daughter and wife loved it
her rice is even better than hunan
Did you turn off the heat after the 20 minutes and let it sit?
Yes. Let it sit in the steam for at least 10 minutes.
I was wondering the same thing thanks!
Me too 😅... Thanks 🌷
I was going to ask that..
Amazing how mNy WAY’S the same kind of rice can be made and still so good.
Rice is a pain in the (?) I use dehydrated rice 1 to 1 let it set for 15 minutes in Tupperware, perfect everytime.
do you use hot or cold water when washing the rice?
Just cool tap water.

As the water cooks down and the rice starts to absorb it, steam forms.
