    Point 4 is very validating to me :) I’m very curvy and plus-sized, and when I was first coming into my masculinity I felt insecure because I *couldn’t* wear men’s section clothes and still look good. Like it made me less masculine or something. Silly stuff, but it got to me as a baby butch.

    I used to have confidence to dress like you do, but I gained weight after getting clean. Now I just wear big shirts and hoodies. I never want to shop because I hate being my size. You give me hope to what I wish to get back to. You’re extremely inspiring, so please keep doing what you’re doing. Some days when I’m in the deepest part of my depression, I can watch your videos and get a smile on my face every time. Thank you for being you!

    Men’s wear is not boring IMO. American men’s wear is boring lol. I’ve seen Asian, European and African brands killl men’s wear lately. I rather shop foreigner men’s wear/ street wear brands than buy women’s clothes. For one the quality of women’s clothes is in general not as good as men’s and also I’m shaped like a dude and women’s clothes lot of the times makes extra room for hips, boobs, etc stuff I just don’t have lol

    what you said about menswear being kinda boring and incorporating feminine stuff to make it a bit less boring resonated with me. throw some colour or shape or patterns in there. I had a guy friend who was wearing like a floral button up and he was saying how he had to go to the women's section because the men's section was too boring and never had any real colour or fun patterns.

  • @Androgynary
    @Androgynary 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    Totally agree! For me, I can’t really shop in the men’s section since I’m on the shorter side. I’ve found that some of the best “masculine” pieces in my closet (like blazers, trousers & button downs) are ironically from the women’s section at the thrift store. You’d be surprised how many masc stuff are there if you know what to look for. Best of all, they actually fit my frame.

    Thank you for mentioning privilege when it comes to clothes shopping. I love watching lgbtqia+ fashion videos, but I often find that the recommendations for clothing are totally out of my financial ability. Would you consider making a fashion video for broke people? People like me consider it a splurge if I spend more than $20 on a pair of jeans, and with the pandemic, going to resale shops aren't really a great option.

    Honestly, this advice is mostly about doing inner work than it is about style. It's not really that XYX is a bad way to dress. Its interrogating WHY you wear what you wear. And if you're actually expressing yourself or if you're expressing who you think you're supposed to be.

    That last point is so important. No one should really be dressing the same way at 40 as they did at 25 or at 16. Styles change, personal preference changes, people's understanding of their personal expression changes. And really, wearing the same stuff for decades with no change is boring. I came into my butchness/started dressing as masculinely as I had been wanting to instead of trying to force myself into a traditionally feminine presentation relatively late (in my late 20s/early 30s), and while it was stressful trying to figure out what "butch" looked like for someone my age with a grown-up job who needed to be taken seriously and not look super costume-y or too much like a teenage boy, I think it saved me from getting trapped too long in some of the more common clichés you mention in this and the other video. I definitely did some of them (I blame gay puberty), but it did help to look in a mirror and have to think, "Okay, but can I go to a Serious Work Meeting dressed like this?" And of course, being more established as an adult also meant that I had more disposable income to spend on things like tailoring, which definitely wouldn't have been the case when I was younger.
    I just found your channel yesterday and have been watching all the videos, because they have so much good advice and just food for thought!

    • @madeofcastiron
      @madeofcastiron 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      true true. i remember dressing very conservatively when i was a teen, only wearing solid colour t-shirts and layering it with a jacket/long-sleeve shirt because i was very insecure with my body and afraid of standing out too much, but now that i'm in my 20s and more comfortable in myself, i find myself drawn to bright patterned shirts, and i don't mind clothes that expose more of my collarbone area. it's amazing how styles could change so drastically in just a few years, and i look forward to how my style could change when i reach my 30s.

    You're always so articulate about something as difficult to describe as style. I really liked what you had to say about maturing your style as you get older, and doing a refresher now and then to update cuts and silhouettes. That's something I've been trying to be very conscious of: balancing feeling like I've found my signature style and I've intentionally minimized my aesthetic, with keeping current and age-friendly so my style doesn't become stale or dated (in a non-cool, not-vintage kinda way). I think I've nailed it rn, but it's def something I stay conscious of, as you say.
    I love your look here, btw. 3GP, totally. And the "set," so to speak. It's so nice to see some personality instead of cookie cutter Insta minimalism (which is a pleasing look, but it doesn't allow much in the way of individuality). Just wanted to share some love.
