In this video we carry out a full review of the DC Designs PT17 Stearman, published by Just Flight for Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS).
We will be taking the aircraft on a short trip around the countryside of Kansas, departing and arriving into Lloyd Stearman Field.

On the forum for this aircraft at MSFS, there's a suggested tweak for the flight model .cfg. The difference this makes has to be seen to be believed! It has a much more realistic roll, and, on approach, actually sinks properly, instead of floating on forever!
Thanks for the great review, very fair and balanced :) First update to the package will be out on Friday with several fixes for minor errors in my animation / modelling; prop-spin direction corrected, engine crank case shape corrected, wing supports and braces now aerofoil-shaped, elevator shape corrected, exhaust interiors now matt black, and windscreen frames thinned as they were a bit too thick.
I know this is a year late, but, well, this is a beautiful simulation. I have flown in a stearman, and the sounds are spot on, That whine you heard at idle is actually the sound of the propwash going over the flying wires. The sound inside the cockpit is just amazing. This brought back some great memories of the days before 2001 when banner towing around sports events was a thing. Definitely some nostalgia felt here.
Great review, with which I totally agree. There are some textural deficiencies, but overall it's a winner, considering the price. I think the strongest point is the sound. I around 20 mins real-world Srearman time, and, from memory, it's heavier in the roll than the one in the sim. I found it a doddle to land, but, as a Tiger Moth pilot, that could be any other aircraft!
Nice review, it is indeed a lovely addition to the sim, something I was really anticipating. However I am slightly disappointed with the initial version and have reached out to the developers to make some comments from someone who has flown the Stearman for several years. The propeller spins counterclockwise just like a Chipmunk so if that was intended then the aircraft should swing to the right and left rudder should be required, ditto for the climb out. So to me that’s pretty major issue. The stall in the Stearman is very gentle with almost no wing drop. The cruise speed is 15kts faster than the real airplane with same rpm settings and finally the drag needs to be increased by about 20 to 30%. Lastly the roll rate is very very high compared to the real airplane. So although I still enjoy flying it , it really does need some refinement. One hidden feature..,if you click or select your AutoPilot shortcut, the airplane will maintain heading and altitude for you! I hate to sound critical but if you are looking for a really beautiful model that’s been made easy to handle and a lot of fun then I would say buy it, you’ll have a blast, but if you are looking for realism then you will have to wait…

Loved how as you turned on to finals the reflection in the 4 chrome studs changed as I’m sure I saw the sun reflection in each other one and that’s attention to detail, love the spearman anyway and downloaded it as soon as it was available, all we need next is the tiger moth, great video as always thanks
The swing to the left on take off is a realistic trait. A lot of people seem to complain about the swing to the left in MSFS tail draggers - that is how they should be.

I agree entirely with your opinion of the whole soundscape - I thought my Flying Iron Spitfire was immersive with the canopy open but my Stearman takes it to a whole new level with the wind in the wires and the creaks and groans. Undoubtedly my best value purchase to date!

I bought this in the current Christmas sale. I fly small ultralights almost exclusively as for me, MSFS is about the views and lay of the land, so i've never flown a bi-plane before. After a bit of research i narrowed my choice down to between this and Ant's tigermoth (which i can't currently afford lol), so the Stearman it was, and by Jove i'm happy with it. I can't believe how fast it goes, i was doing close to 160 knots, skimming across the sand dunes of Morocco and i felt an incredible rush, hearing the ropes and boards creaking away, it was amazing.
