  • A first flight in the Carenado Waco YMF5 Bi-Plane in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Wonderfully modelled, fun to fly, and sounds gorgeous - what's not to like?

    being an OAP - any aircraft born around my time in the 30s is a must for me - and these 2 you have flown in the last 2 days
    are in my hangar - plus the brilliant Stearman - flown by thousands of budding U.S. pilots - and not forgetting the ubiquitous
    Tiger Moth - the very first aircraft I flew in - in Blackpool - round the Tower - and I'm older than that one as well😃

      Love the Art Deco design cues.

    I get the impression that both the Staggerwing and the Waco would be ideal planes to use in VR. I don't use VR myself, but I've noticed that the Carenado planes have little to no impact on frame rates despite looking gorgeous.
    As I only have the Waco I can't say how the Staggerwing holds up, but the Waco even has some really nice rain and icing effects.

    Nice review of a gorgeous airplane. BTW, it’s pronounced “wah-co”. The name comes from the Weaver Aircraft Co. and has nothing to with the city in Texas.

      Corrected! I know what it stood for - didn't realise how it was supposed to be pronounced.

    I have flown in the real deal, I must say I am stunned at how well they did modeling this beautiful plane. It does land fast..but the real one tracks very well on wheel landings. And its not as tippy on breaks as the this model. Loops, rolls, hammer heads are done with ease.
    Great video my friend.

    Loved the video. The Waco is just amazing for those short vfr flights. If you like old planes the A1R Design Ryan STA is worth a look. I'm not sure about the sounds but it looks gorgeous and it's a hoot to fly.

    Out of all of the planes i've got in multiple simulators - this is ironically probably the one that brings me the most actual joy to fly. The only other thing that gives me the same pure grin value is mig21/f14 in DCS. Its incredibly simple and amazing in VR for VFR flight. The only thing I don't like is the mph gauge.
    What I love is I can just jump in and fly this. No mega checklist, no huge amounts of flight planning - a quick VFR plan and off. No complicated systems, that i have to remember after maybe six months of not flying.

    When it comes to biplanes (and i too have the Beechcraft you tried out in the previous video), i don't think i've ever had more fun than with a craft called the Stearman, the sounds and overall feel of which would really surprise you. It gets criticism for not being quite perfect or fully realistic in the way it flies, (too fast for the real thing is what i hear), but it just leaves me with a giant grin on my face every time i fly it.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the Stearman - I recorded several videos with it when it first came out :) The only downer about the Stearman (which is a huge shame) is the developer themselves. I keep hearing absolute horror stories about DC Designs being abusive to customers. Indeed - they were incredibly disparaging here about a video I put out comparing their aircraft to the DCS counterparts - essentially flat-out lying about the fidelity and accuracy of their aircraft.
      I know several people that have sworn never to touch any of their aircraft again after being treated horrendously by the developers themselves in their Discord server. Like I said - it's a shame because the Stearman is good.

      @@jonbeckett That's a pity to hear. I'm actually more of a simple gamer than an aircraft enthusiast so i'm not really in the 'thick of it' as it were, when it comes to the MSFS community. My only real point of contact with people who actually know what they're doing regarding aviation in general, is TH-cam, so a lot passes me by, and as a result a lot surprises me on the boomerang end, as you can imagine. There is one other small plane i would like to mention for your possible perusal, and that would be the Zippy Sport. It's a tiny little ultralight that nobody seems to know about, and which i feel is a pity as i really enjoy its smooth and uncomplicated flying. No idea what the developers are like for that though either. Thanks again for all the wonderful videos, i always look forward to watching them.

    Definitely among Carenado's best efforts - wonderful modelling, good flight dynamics, sound and just generally well worth the money. I do like their aircraft quite a lot - do you believe the PC-12 is really as rough-edged as people say it is?

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes - the PC-12 is quite poor. It has issues with frame rate.

    Carenado makes pretty aircraft but they have a bad habit of putting broken stuff on the market and a lack of transparency when it comes to development updates, fixes and release notes

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep - I wouldn't argue with that. I think all the developers struggle to meet the expectations of the community when it comes to communications though - some people seem to think they should get immediate and direct access to development updates, and a priority line of dialogue with the developers. Disclaimer - I'm a software developer :)
