I’m actually baffled by the fact that I’ve found another human with as much unadulterated nostalgic affection for Wengen as I have, I’d always thought it was a treasure that only me and my family knew about! I’m so jealous you got to go during these abysmal times, thanks for the nostalgia Karl!

Honestly I didn't notice the difference too much between this and your other videos, still top quality stuff. Only thing is it was condensed in terms of only covering a couple days. Man the views up there are absolutely stunning, I haven't seen the best of Switzerland yet. Good reason to go back, when possible.

@@karlwatsondocs Sounds good. I could use some real mountain adventures. Tried in Croatia but got rained out. Might head for the Theth mountains of Albania which are comparable to the Alps. Should be a little cheaper too.

EPIC. I just wanted to post and say that I returned from two weeks in Switerland yesterday (October 2023). When planning my trip, I decided to replicate most of this journey. It was the highlight of my trip and one of the most amazing days of my life.
I came in early from Geneva on a gorgeous warm day. Dropped off my overnight bag at the hotel. Got back on the train to Wengen. Had an early lunch at Crystal Bar. Then I caught the cable car up to Mannlichen. From there I hiked up to the 360-degree view and sat on the same bench and was overcome with emotion. Then I did the most amazing downhill "hike" (which was more like a walk) from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg. Had a beer in Kleine Scheidegg while staring up at the Eiger. Then caught the train back to Wengen. Went to the white church and sat on the same bench overlooking Lauterbrunnen at sunset with the beams of light radiating across the mountains above Lauterbrunnen. Then walked down from Wengen to Lauterbrunnen during sunset. All in less than a full day.
If you are going to this area, have a day, and the weather is clear (Spring is probably even more epic with flowers) I cannot recommend enough doing this circuit. The way I went covered much of the same ground but was physically easier and almost all downhill (I was still recovering from Gornergrat in Zermatt, which is another epic experience). The one exception was the hike up to the Mannlichen 360 degree view which was no joke, espeicallly at over 7000 feet.
So yes, PLEASE do not just stay down in Lauterbrunnen (which is is of course beautiful). Get up high in Wengen / Mannlichen / Kleine Scheidegg. The experience you get for the effort (my route) has got to be one of the best tradeoffs in the world.
PS - If you are looking for the white church in Wengen, it is at the end of the main street that Crystal Bar is on. Just keep going and it will turn uphill and to the left and there you are. Also, the best view of the Lauterbrunnen Valley from the benches is actually a little hidden behind a row of hedges. Take a beer (or two) with you and just enjoy that moment of life!

We stayed in Wengen a few weeks ago for a week. It’s such a good base and we had a fantastic time. We did the walk you did and all we kept saying was ‘wow’. We’ve properly fallen in love with Switzerland - Wengen, Mannlichen, Jungfraujoch, Mürren, Grindelwald, Gimmelwald, Lauterbrunnen and so much more. Can’t wait to go back, you just can’t beat those stunning views!

When I see Switzerland these days I get very emotional, unexpected nostalgia. I worked briefly in Switzerland many years ago, didn't enjoy working there (the city gets boring after a couple days), but definitely some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever explored on the weekends. Been lucky to have seen a lot of the world and gone to many amazing places, but Switzerland may still be the most beautiful country I've ever visited. The accessibility via quick train rides is also unparalleled. So much left to see and do there. So glad you got to spend a perfect day there and share with us! ❤️

I just love, LOVE your passion for the mountains...your eyes just LIT up when you first spotted the Alps as you left Zurich after your stint working there...tired and exhausted, you quickly recovered after the three hour train ride, too, when you got to the mountains.!!! LOVE IT...I find my whole demeanor changes when I'm up in the Rockies (Canadain), it's like nothing I've ever felt!!! I totally relax, totally, and my heart just sings. I went up the Icefield Parkway by car, and stopped at the Athabasca Glacier...walked along, sooo happy. Later that same week, (I'm also a pilot) I had the chance to fly through the Rockies, over Jasper National Park, Followed the SMokey River around to the Fraser River (British Columbia) and then flew past the talles peak in the Rockies ( U.S. or Canada) Mount Robson. I was at 7500 ft...the view, simply took my breath away. I was Pilot in command (PIC) my navigator is an experienced mountain aviator, he knew what to look out for ( large down drafts, losing altitude because of a whole down draft of air over the tops of the mountains...etc...it was my first mountain flight. He couldn't fly because his medical had to be renewed..so...that gave me flying priviledges...lol...but...damn....I couldn't fly the plane with the crazy views around me...occasionally I had to ask him to 'take the controls' it was just so overwhelming, the beauty. Anyway....to be honest, as much as I loved flying by Mount Robson, actually being ON the mountains is what really stole my heart...it was there that I felt so much joy. So.....I perfectly get why you 'woke' up so quicky, and got on with your amazing passion for the Alps....why not move to Switzerland!!!???!!!

LOL @ 7:13 and the Swiss train times. I remember getting my ticket in Lauterbrunnen for back to the airport in Zurich. The super nice woman who spoke amazing English explain it fully, "Here at 9:13, platform 4, stop at XXXXXX at platform 5 at 10:13, transfer to platform 1, leaving at 10:17....and it continued like 4 lines. Once done, I questioned a 4 minute stop where I had to transfer platforms, and perfectly straight forward and with a swiss accent of course, "Yes, it is not even a 1 minute walk." I thought she was mad, but I watched the whole way to Zurich as each stop was timed...like a swiss watch. It still makes me smile and how amazing perfect it was.

Karl, thank you so much for this travel video! Exactly one year ago today was my first trip to Switzerland and I was staying in Lauterbrunnen doing mostly the same adventures that you did. I took the train all the way up to Jungfraujoch and explored the top of Europe, Sphinx station and had some hot chocolate. It was also the perfect weather when I was there. In Lauterbrunnen, theres a path that leads you to a cave which brings you just behind the waterfall that you see there. It brought back good memories for sure and It is now one of the most breathtaking and unforgettable place that I've ever been. I was glad that I did my Europe backpacking trip in 2019 not this year lol. Cheers!

Thanks for the great video. I appreciate your love of the area. I still remember Grindlewald and the Jungfrau train fondly from 1988. We are hoping to return in the next couple of months.

What a pleasant surprise to find this! :) We were thrilled with the CEO for One Month videos. I'm so glad you got a chance to head to Wengen. I'm headed there this weekend and stumbled upon this beautiful video while doing some research - so thank you!

God that stired a feeling in me I had almost forgotten existed in 2020!
I'm taking this as an opportunity though to not just default traveling as much as possible but remind myself WHY I love traveling and what it is I miss about it so that when it's back in my life I will apreciate it all the more!
I'm so glad you got this moment of joy in a year that has been like no other

Watching your videos brings me peace; it really takes one to another place. You're the only one that can deliver a humbleness; a homely feel that other travel vloggers fail to do (for my personal taste at least).
I'm unable to travel due to health and financial reasons - regardless if there was Covid or not - so binging your vlogs has been the closest thing to accomplishing my dream of travellng =). You've a gift, good sir. Thank you.

Awesome video. Switzerland is top of my list for places to go once I can travel again. I stayed in wengen and interlaken back in 2018, and it wasn't nearly enough. I think I could spend a couple of weeks there and not get sick of it.

Thank you so much for this amazing video. It actually made me and my wife cry a little when it got to the scene of you sitting on the bench in Wengen watching the sunset. We are going to be at that very spot in September of this year. We cannot wait. We will spend 3 full days in the Jungfrau. One night in Lauterbrunnen and 2 nights in Wengen. 2 full weeks in Switzerland. We are going to hike some of these trails you mentioned because of your video. We are so excited. Any other tips you could give would be awesome. Keep up the great videos!

My dad has a chalet in Wengen we try to go as much as possible, it is one of my favourite places in the world it’s away from everything and I feel so free and happy there. Seeing you in Wengen brought me back the memories when I was there in Christmas I miss it so much, seeing the Jungfrau every morning. I hope to go back soon. Thank you for this video

Oi Karl cheers for the vid mate. I’m a chef, and had to put off my huge backpacking trip I was going to start ( was going for 18 months) because of covid, after 3 years of saving. I had a huge day in the kitchen and I smashed lol, but I got home and saw this vid was up up and it totally made my week. It’s stuff like this that you do that has and still does get me fired up to get out and see the the world even if I’m still stuck I’m my little Aussie town. Cheers brother
