As a librarian, I just want to point something out. Most libraries no longer use physical card catalogs, with many having switched to electronic records over 20 years ago. I can barely remember when they had a physical catalog. I had to be in maybe junior high when I had last saw one which must be almost thirty years ago.
Even when I was in high school in the 90s my school had done away with physical card catalogues. I remember the day we were taught to use the computer catalogue to find the books we wanted. It was an exciting day. Now it would be mundane. lol.

I'm in my mid 30s and hung out in libraries a lot as a small child. My only exposure to a card catalog was my highschool library that had recently converted to digital, but hadn't gotten rid of the old cards so I would go look at them for fun sometimes

Asking how many genders there are is a bit like asking how many temperatures there are. You can broadly categorize everything as hot or cold, but there's a lot of nuance inbetween.

Cute, but no I'm not. Gender and sex are synonymous in the context of biological and physiological traits. They're only differniated so it won't sound like we're talking about fornication when the word "sex" is used.
Also you're conflating societal standards with biological factors, hence your misunderstanding. The two are as different as night and day. Biology and physiology help differeniate the genders of every living creature. Societal standards were crafted to establish a sense of order, and thus shouldn't determine how boys and girls behave, or what they enjoy so long as it's within reason. Hell you wanna know how B.S. societal standards are, I'm a heterosexual guy, yet my second favorite anime franchise is Sailor-Moon. Sailor-Moon is aimed at girls 12 and up, yet I've watched the series on Toonami back in 1998, and collected the manga. Another series I enjoy is My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, as I used to enjoy the original My Little Pony as a kid, though Friendship Is Magic is a vast improvement.
Such examples are a nice contrast to the boy centric material likeBatman, Power Rangers, and DragonBall Z that I also enjoy. Meanwhile these individuals who consider their gender indulge in that which is socially acceptable to the genders they identify with at a given moment. But that's expected from a sheltered lot who haven't lived in this world, and don't know how unnecessary that is.
Plus, you haven't done what I've asked in giving me features to identify these alleged genders by. So how am I supposed to trust what you say...? Take you at your word? Please, doing that has always ended poorly for me.

Why do we make babies by sexual reproduction? Can we pray to the sun?" And the most creative types came up with answers. However, ALL of those answers were wrong. Now in cultures where education for girls is deemed a basic human right...as it is for boys, those cultures have better quality of life, economy, health and stability.
Adults pretend they know what kids are or want based on their own subjective and arbitrary opinions...like those gross and ignorant parents who believed girls should not have a right to education because they are girls. Now days we still have cruel parents who force kids to conform to their subjective opinions of arbitrary and ever changing social constructs like gender not knowing what will happen to the child for a couple of decades to come. It's interesting that you compare it to 'Babylon' when Babylon was used as an example in the bible of the gods of christianity openly demonstrating hatred and condemnation of knowledge, human cooperation and ingenuity. And when it comes to the Devil in the bible...he's the good guy of the story who wanted humans to have knowledge, free will and stood up to tyrannical, abusive, genocidal and morally depraved authoritarian gods. So no, the church doesn't worship the devil. He shared statistics for suicides amongst teens in 2017, but failed to include the statistics showing home environment/religious affiliation as pertaining to a contributing factor. How many of our LGBTQIA+ youth have we lost to suicide because of the rejection from their fundie parents?? Christians and their cherry-picking...
Not to mention rejection from their peers as well. A lot of us grew up with that viral YT video showing a child coming out and being bullied to the point where they committed suicide. That, at least, was my first introduction to what being gay even was as I didn't know what it was before watching. I think the video resonated with a lot of people because they are so often ostracized. It's exactly people like Allen that contribute to people in the community harming themselves.

As a Christian crap like this makes me want to focus on raising my kids to be independent and critical thinkers. But that deters me from wanting to have kids, because if I do that, I'll have to deal with them possibly being critical of how my parents raised me, which would make family get-togethers hazardous.

I’ve heard from grade school teachers that ‘text style’ slang writing is often infused into formal writing these day. Apparently kids often have difficulty distinguishing the difference. Decisions about education should not be left to the students, for many reasons, among them is that they can’t really evaluate their own problems objectively. [ps Aim a lot higher than Starbucks, or you’ll sabotage your own future. Cheers.]
As someone who recently learned they have autism. This feels like it might fit. Are you dyslexic like me or do you have some other mild learning disorder. I'm high functioning learning disorder on the spectrum. I've learned to let go. I'm on a phone so punctuation nah.😂😂😂
@@allensparks4734 Hi Allen. One of my college roommates was a very brilliant mathematician with dyslexia. His rule was that if he couldn’t log onto a computer within 10 tries for his simple password, he would figure that a day on the computer would be a waste of time. In the end, this became a great strength, since he would solve problems completely in his head, and then write down his reasoning and answer only after completely solving the problem. [It was amusing and instructive to see this process in action.] As for autism, if you are reasonably satisfied with yourself… embrace it. Be thyself. Cheers.

When I was a PhD student I literally spent a large proportion of my life in the windowless bowels of my university's academic library. I am so glad now that technology has saved today's students of that ordeal. That's what I call progress...thank you technology.
I have a 14, 16, and 18 year old. None of them thinks texting language is the same as other written communication. They play tons of video games. My oldest is a freshman honors Chemistry major. Oh, and we are atheists. This man is ridiculous.

I would carry around a pocket sized note book and a pen all the time in order to make a note to myself to look something up during my weekly visit to the library. I dreamt of a future where information would be so easily accessible (like in sci-fi novels and tv shows). I guarantee you that this guy uses technology just like the rest of us and he doesn’t thinks it’s “from Satan” when he does it. This guy is just listing how tech and attitudes have changed since he was a kid. The funniest thing is he’s listing “issues” that have always been said about kids. His lack of self awareness is very sad really.
We took the approach with our kids that regardless of Internet limits and browser safeguards that we simply couldn’t control their access to information because of friends, etc. and if we couldn’t filter it, then we should arm them with enough positive facts and context to make good choices about how to process information they received when we weren’t present to put it in context for them.

That is exactly what we did. Parental controls blocked so many things that were not harmful, didn't block things that could have been, and constantly sent me notifications that something had been blocked or that my kids were requesting it be unblocked. It was a mess. You just have to tell them to be careful and that a lot on the internet is not real or not healthy.

Okay for one thing, ADD/ADHD (and autism) is NOT a mental illness. It is a neurological condition where our brains perceive things differently.
Also, I have physical mobility issues, so technology has been extremely helpful and especially this past year so that I don’t have to find arrangements to get to places, and it allows me to be more social within my physical limitations.

when i was in middle school and texting was becoming ubiquitous, but many cellphones didnt have keyboard and texts were pricy so kids actually used hardcore texting grammar to be as efficient as possible. there was a lot of uproar about txt speech, but even then kids only did it on purpose to be funny or "cool," none of us thought it was how the english language is typically written. its so silly to see that same fear 15 years later. like if text speech was going to destroy our written language it probably would have done so by now, especially cause we're way past its heyday anyway.

As a Christian, I think that a lot of the bad things that go on on a societal level are more from our own sinful nature than directly from satan.

I grew up in the 60s and 70s. In those days a computer would fill a room and the idea of having one at home, much less in your pocket, was unimaginable. That didn't stop me from being bullied though, nor did it prevent the several occasions when I was sexually harassed and even assaulted. I don't think Satan was involved, just the individuals who actually hurt me.

I am a Christian, and in case you didn't already know, the *fear* *of* *hell* tactic that is commonly preached to "win" people over, doesn't stop at conversion. Typically, it continues in a weekly rebuke in Sunday services of how we are still not meeting God's desires and are probably disappointing him. I lived for almost 20 years with the idea that God was just waiting for me to screw up or was looking for a reason to excommunicate me from His family. I'm still a believer, but have a very different outlook on things now.
I can't get over how polite you are towards others in the two videos I've watched so far. Your kindness surpasses what I've seen among many of my own "brothers" and "sisters"... towards EACH OTHER. I feel so much more open to listen to what you have to say because of that.

@@twiggledowntown3564 It was the method of looking up books before computers. Small cards that had a hole in the bottom so that a rod could go through them all and hold them in place in a draw. For fiction you would need to know the authors name and for non fiction they were sorted by the Dewy Decimal system (could have also had multiples that were other ways of searching too). It let you know if the library owned a book on a topic that you were researching and then you would have written down the title, name and dewy so that you could find it on the shelf. If it wasn't there then you could ask the librarian to check if it was borrowed and to get a hold put on it if you really wanted to borrow it.

Which is a fear tactic that only works with those who already believe. I saw a picture on I think Facebook of people now on their phones looking very similar to an old black and white photo of people reading newspapers not talking to each other. So the method ad technology is different, the attitudes are still pretty similar at the least.
I am very late to this video, but just discovered the channel (loving it by the way, Emma you're a very sharp and funny person). As a student in a social science, the mental health part (let's call it mental health instead of "illness") triggers me, since it's so much more complicated than "the devil did it". As you already mentioned, our understanding of mental illness grows over time, so we can identify more people who are struggling and help them. This is a positive thing if you ask me.
The thing I would like to add though is the changes in our society. The demands that are put on youth are higher than they were years ago, with a more specific/idealised set of skills that is highly valued. This means that people who deviate even a little are already at a higher risk of being "too different from the norm", getting negative feedback loops from their environment and thus developing issues with their mental health like anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, etc. Sometimes being too different is already enough for a diagnosis (AD(H)D, autism, etc.). So the increased amount of diagnosises (that ain't proper English XD) might reflect a narrowing concept of "normal" in the changing society. That being said, there is also a trend to be seen where the new generation is a lot more open about their mental health and struggles. This means that people who have problems actually are more open about it and don't suppress it, so it's hard to say if the problems have increased or have just become more visible.
That ended up being quite long, sorry for that. Comments on old videos like these probably aren't read anymore but I still wanted to add my two cents. Thank you for this video! (And for reading all of this if you got through the whole rant XD)

And while I do agree that there is pressure, why do you think that it's more pressure compared to previous generations? @@vahidebrahimi9750 That's a very good question to ask, don't worry about misinterpreting and being offensive in any way. So again it's a bit long (woops XD), but I want to add the disclaimer that my studies are not complete and I'm typing this comment from the top of my head.
It's hard to explain, but a child was sooner said to just be troublesome in "the old days", while we now default more quickly to a diagnosis from the DSM V (like labeling a child with a conduit disorder or ADHD instead of calling the child troublesome). And this is a double edged sword due to misunderstanding of DSM V diagnostic; it may give the message across that there's something inherently wrong with a child, as if it's a physical disease (called reification). By diagnosing quicker than before, we label them as "not normal" quicker. On the other hand though, these labels are merely meant to describe behaviour and not an inherent "wrong" of the child (a misconception). It has helped us deepen our understanding, get to the root cause of behaviours and get more accurate treatment. Mental health got a lot more attention this way, which funnily enough made mental health and behaviour both more normative (due to quicker diagnosis and the stigma and misconceptions around these) and more open to talk about (due to us actually understanding our mental health and behaviour better). So yes you're right, that could very well alleviate the pressure of normativity. Maybe the open talk about mental health is a reaction on the quicker diagnostics?
Honestly, I don't know how it all balances out, it all seems a bit of a mess of contradicting movements at the moment. Personally, I hope the stigma and misconceptions around mental health, behaviour and diagnosis can be resolved, since a lot of normative standards revolve around this I feel like. Pet peeve: did you know that most people (I believe it was around 70%? Don't take my word for it though) actually would have a DSM V diagnosis if they would go through it and see where they check the boxes? That should say enough about what's normal and what isn't. Anyway, not very relevant, just a pet peeve of mine.

@@TheBlackfall234 I think the biggest mistake is believing old stories and tall tails from a book that was translated retranslated and retranslated and copied and copied etc to the point it's impossible to actually determine what it's actual message is or was, and that the people who claim to believe in these fairy tails lack the ability to critically think about and analyze these stories and just accept them as true with no evidence and nothing to back up the claims the stories make. That is the biggest mistake, teaching children religion and not critical thinking skills.

So, on the texting thing, this (switching between text speech and formal speech) is called "code switching". Younger generations are actually getting better at code switching because their social circles are growing (largely due to technology), and they have more variety in the types of groups they socialize with. So switching between how you talk with your friends vs classmates vs teachers/parents/pastors, is teaching kids to be more socially adept and increasing their language proficiency. This is part of why there are so many more young writers than in previous generations.

- Ouija boards, Tarot cards, and other occult items

It's because the target demographic of these videos are middle aged women, who live in a home, in the suburbs, with their kids and have never really seen the ugly side of cities, you'll be surprised how much of such women exist. So the biggest "problems" for them are things like "my child may be using too much phone" and not about poverty or unemployment or corruption.

I have seen on television and TH-cam enough that questions from a “person on the street” are 9 times out of 10 meant to construe me to look stupid. If I am ever approached with a question on the street, I’ll just answer “potatoes, definitely potatoes” and walk away.
I work with an editor and I get to see samples of submissions for contests and even traditional publishing that uses text-speek. Every time we put out a call for new employees several aps go in the bin because they used text-speek. Unfortuantely, it's an issue. Maybe it's getting better, but it's still and issue.

In my Interpersonal Communication class, we are learning about online communication and text and email communication as well as in-person and face-to-face communication.
Ooh, I remember how big of an issue it was that teenagers texted each other while hanging out at youth group events instead of speaking face to face. We had our phones taken away constantly. But then we just started using pen and paper to talk to each other. :D Because the problem wasn't that we had no interpersonal skills etc., we just had things to say that we didn't want the adults to hear or know about (and the moment they left us alone, we dropped the phones and talked out loud xd).
Yeah kids have been passing notes to each other in situations with an adult authority, especially school, since forever.

Y not C a film together?" was almost certainly written by him, because it shows an innate lack of understanding of how text language actually functions (no kid would have written it this way, with all the caps and formal punctuation); and C) the idea that kids cannot switch between written communicative styles (e.g. text speak vs. formal essay writing) is as bizarre as the idea that a person couldn't switch between spoken registers (e.g. speaking politely to your boss vs. casual slang and laughter with friends), especially since text-based writing actually encodes pragmatics as well as semantics (i.e. it communicates things such as shouting, whispering, facial expressions, body language, sarcasm and other tone of voice, emotion, etc.)
TL;DR this guy doesn't understand language (which includes texting language) at all and he really shouldn't be critiquing something he doesn't understand lol XD
EDIT: To be clear, my point here isn't that everyone knows formal language (which, as Becca correctly pointed out in the replies, is a priviledged concept) but that those who already do know formal language can still use it even if they also use texting language. In other words, texting language doesn't affect access to other communicative styles or registers at all.
Although the idea that everybody automatically knows/is taught well enough to be competent in formal language is a privileged one and would apply to written language as well.
Not that it invalidates your point, but it's worth keeping in mind for people who are judgmental about language use.

However, my point wasn't that everyone has been taught and is able to use formal language but that those who *were* taught in formal language aren't losing the ability to use it due to texting, and are still able to switch between those communicative styles/registers.
Additionally, even if you aren't taught in formal language, you still have access to registers within your own social group (even if they aren't the same registers found in academia). Such people are still able to switch between those registers, so in a way, my initial point still applies to them. Language is innately human, and all language (even that which isn't seen as "academic" or "formal") has value :3

I'd say it's dumbing down language. It's effectively boiling down language to it's most basic level. It leaves little to no scope for nuanced expression of thoughts, ideas and conversation. It's effectively the same as trying to have a conversation using just one word questions and answers.
@@jaysmith2858 On the contrary, text speak encodes every layer of linguistic communication, from the basic phonetic level all the way up to pragmatics. No other writing system encodes pragmatics like text speak does. It's highly complex and multi-layered, and even influences spoken morphology and semantics. If you're not picking up on that nuance, it's likely that you're a millienial or (most probably) even older ;)
I really appreciate this video in every way. Emma, you picked up on almost every point I wanted to respond with. I have just turned 50 yrs and no longer feel old after listening to Allen! But it must be handy having Satan to blame for the results of inadequate parenting. Personally, I take responsibility, accountability and have a conscience, rather than scapegoating the devil.

I'm a high school teacher. While I've never seen students use text speech in assignments, many do misspell things endlessly. I think it's the fault of autocorrect. They're used to their spelling being automatically corrected, and the website used by the school for posting work purposefully does not have autocorrect. And of course, it's worse on paper. Honestly, I just wish English was an easier language to spell. A lot of students refuse to even try to sound out words when reading a new word or guess the correct spelling. In other languages, sounding out a word is not a thing. In Spanish, every letter makes only one sound (with a small amount of exceptions that follow consistent rules) so you don't need to sound anything out. You just read it. You don't have to guess at how to spell something.
Yeah, because of autocorrect I'm not constantly recalling the words I've memorized, cuz that's all we're doing when we spell :/ cuz sounding out the word doesn't help all that much with English, I write down like three versions of the word in the corner of my paper and see what looks right 😅 visual memory sometimes helps more
Also I don't think cuz is formal language 😅😅 but most people don't talk formally either, so in normal conversations whether it's text or speech I don't usually bother trying to be formal
Autocorrect & predictive text was definitely my downfall. I have forgotten how to spell the easiest words. For some reason, it works horribly on my new phone (no spaces, keeps correcting to=tio). Luckily, I have 2 teenagers so, I just ask them how to spell something that I've forgotten.
I have always had trouble spelling, I’m dyslexic, so autocorrect is honestly a lifesaver for me. Before I had access to it I used a spelling dictionary but autocorrect is so much easier. My dyslexia isn’t bad enough in that area that I get an adjustment for it in exams though so I practice by writing letters on paper to a friend of mine (also so they’ll have them when we go off to Uni in a year) but I regularly use the autocorrect on my phone to check. However I never had much of a problem spelling in Spanish because it’s phonetic. English is just a nightmare Frankenstein’s monster of a language with more exceptions than rules.
Yes, I think spelling erodes a bit for most of us who primarily write on a computer or device. It’s interesting to think of the situation for kids. They are likely writing more than before outside of school (social media, texting,…) but via electronics instead of analog pen on paper). I can imagine learning spelling in this environment could provide a bit of a unique challenge. Thanks for sharing your experience of what you see in your classroom.

My mom kept me from so much stuff that I didn't become exposed too until she was forced to put me in public school when I got to middle school cause she couldn't afford the expensive private school anymore. Thanks for sharing this! I feel like we ignored the fact that his attitude towards mental health is extremely dangerous, given the high rate of suicide in children. Parents who think their children's mental health concerns come from the devil are not usually the most supportive and helpful. Also, we are ignoring the fact that a lack of acceptance for LGBTQ+ youth directly affects suicide rates. :(
People like this made my childhood & especially adolescence a living nightmare. I was a generally good kid/teen, but my parents were listening to people like this and thought I was just terrible and destined for hell. I've mostly forgiven my parents (thanks to over a decade of therapy) but can never forgive those horrible people in their ears telling them how to raise me "properly". These folks do SO much damage. This happens to countless kids/teens and that is heart-breaking.

I find the family disfunction thing sort of funny because I’ve never met my biological father and I barely speak to my mother. My mental state has actually been better since the day my mother and I stopped talking to each other so often
When I finally came around to living in the modern world and took up texting, I resisted abbreviations, not because I thought it was the devils work, but because I felt that it simply wasn't proper English. Then I learned that 'text speak' wasn't a new thing. When morse code was the best way of communicating long distance (from the 19th century and into the 20th), 'text speak' was used to keep messages as short and as economical as possible (you were charged by the character for messages). If it was good enough for them, It is certainly ok for me, I use it all the time now. Whenever anything new takes off, there are people who worry that education will suffer. It never does. Education in fact improves with new developments such as the printing press, radio, television, the computer, phones. Perhaps this is the basis for his worries. We know that higher levels of education lead to reduced religiosity. Has he realised this link?

As someone who texts like im illiterate, but im literally getting my PhD in English Lit, i find his issues with text language incredibly funny.
People like Allen Parr using Fear Tactics is one of the main reasons why I started pulling away from the church. I couldn't deal with the mental abuse that I was getting all the way up to my 20s. At it's worst, I nearly took my own life over it. Its sad to see that they're still doing this to this day and others are suffering metal anguish just like I did.
I left for various reasons. One was that the normally pretty liberal Protestant church in Germany (I'm German) released a number of papers arguing that homosexual couples shouldn't be allowed to adopt children, because...? I don't know really. "Sola Scriptura" seems to be largely forgotten but "we defend family values" - not that Jesus was ever much of a family man, or Paul for that matter. If you scratch the surface both denominations are largely the same. I still consider myself a Christian but I don't belong to any church even though I studied theology actually. I make up my own mind what the Bible wants to tell me. I have studied for exactly that.
And homosexuality isn't in the Bible. No matter how often the clobber verses get quoted.
I'd loved if these extremists (I don't call them fundamentalists as they don't know what the "fundamentals" are) would quote the verses about forgiveness and love for your neighbor a bit more often.

As to your question; its a combination of both. I wanted to justify my faith and have facts to back up what I was saying, so I started looking for evidence that supported the bible. I didn't find any. Combine that with a list of people both in my family and in my congregation that were some of the most hateful people that I know and I started losing my faith really quick. The final straw for me was when a minister at my congregation not only forgave two convicted child molesters, but also asked a local judge for clemency for them based on their 'good christian nature', I fucking lost it and renounced the religion right then and there.
the reason why you and see, were shortened to just U and C back then was because we typed on horrid to click keypads, with a 250 character limit. Typing you and see would take 8 character presses, as well as require waiting 1 sec when typing see, because you had to use the same character twice.
as for resume, i haven't had to write one in many years. Most companies do not ask for one, some don't even ask for CV, just fill in an online form. Many companies will literally turn you down if you show up with CV and a Cover Letter, and tell you to go online in staid.

He said if young people were wandering the streets and doing the things he was as a kid, theyd get arrested. and he's not wrong. young people standing around chatting outside or walking around usually summons a squad car after a while, and the kids are told to break it up and go home. also why cant we just drink, hit our kids, and ignore our mental health like our parents did.
