    Hi Ben, This video does not quite cover what I'd like. I simply what to be a lecturer using PowerPoint slides ie. a split screen to illustrate what I am saying; also a second 'control' or presentation screen. It would also be useful to be able to flip between full screen slide to slide + lecturer. In short the problem is reducing the full shared-screen slide to allow me to 'squeeze in'. I find it amazing that Zoom does not allow this as easy and standard.
    For clarity I restate: I have 2 screens; I want to record a series of lectures. For each lecture I have a file of PowerPoint slides. No participants.
    On screen 1 (which I want recorded) I want a screen split (or side-by-side, call it what you will) between a slide and my zoom/ presenter view. When I go to share-screen the slide hogs the lot (attach. 1). This is the problem as I want the screen with the slide halved and my pic taking the other half (attach 3 is trying to get there).
    On screen 2 (the presenter view) I will see the slide (reduced in size), screen controls inc. button for moving to next slide, notes, and next slide. Obviously, this is the screen I shall work from but I do not want it recorded. (This screen is shown in attachments 2 and 4, probably 4 as the thumbnail will have been slid across to screen 1 as the view of myself.)
    This should be simple. It is a basic lecture requirement to see both lecturer and slides. BUT I cannot find a way to do it. Zoom.us is no help as it will not answer questions 'due to covid' from the like of myself.
    What have I missed? Can you please help me here? Have you an algorithm/ protocol that achieves what I wish? Mike

    • @BenFinio
      @BenFinio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Mike - to be honest if you just need to record yourself giving a lecture and do not have a meeting with live participants, then Zoom is probably not the right tool to begin with. You would probably be better off using a screen recorder like Camtasia or OBS Studio instead of an online meeting tool like Zoom (or Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc). As you've discovered, controlling the layout of the resulting recording with Zoom can be prohibitively difficult and annoying. Either of those tools (Camtasia or OBS Studio) will record the webcam and screen separately and allow you to drag and resize them as you wish. Camtasia is both a screen recorder AND video editor and I have a tutorial for it here (note that it's expensive - over $200): th-cam.com/video/83hn6tlZRIA/w-d-xo.html. I do not have an OBS Studio tutorial but they are all over TH-cam. It is JUST a screen recorder, so in that case you would still need a separate video editing program. Also, I think Microsoft Powerpoint even has a built-in recording tool now, but I have not played with it and I'm not sure if it will simultaneously record your webcam.
      Alternatively, if you really want to stick with Zoom and do not want to deal with the learning curve for a new program, I believe there is a way to get what you want but it involves a second computer. If you screen share the slides from one computer, then the OTHER computer will let you view the slides/webcam in side by side mode. You can record there and adjust the relative size of the slides/video. There appears to be a severe lag when adjusting the size, but if you only need to do it once at the beginning, it should be OK: th-cam.com/video/z8xRiOPqE9U/w-d-xo.html
      Finally - if you have a Zoom Pro account, you could do a cloud recording with the "record speaker, gallery, and shared screen views to separate files" option. That would give you a separate file for each, which you could then combine in whatever size/position you wish using a third party video editor.

    • @BenFinio

    Hi Ben...It's Leslie from McGill. I loved the video but am having a difficult time getting one screen to be the presentation and the other to be the gallery (Mac!). • @BenFinio
      @BenFinio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Leslie - you can turn off "Presenter View" entirely in Powerpoint (that's the screen with the preview and notes), which prevents it from hogging both monitors. Not sure where the option will be on a Mac, but on Windows I click the "Slide Show" menu at the top and then there's a little check box for "Use Presenter View" that you can disable. Hope all is well!

  • @juliaevans9521

    I was really enjoying the video and so liked it ...... but I got totally lost when the PowerPoint presenter view wasn't used on screen 1 to show the slide slow and control it along with viewing of the notes and using annotation tools.
    Before realising the benefits of Dual Monitors (the reason I searched and found your tutorial), I had been shown that I needed to use Zoom's Advanced Sharing option to select the area of the Presenter View that I wanted my viewers to see, allowing just me to see the rest of the features like Notes, etc.
    I was hoping that turning on Dual Monitors in Zoom would make the above setup (Monitor 1 - Presenter View with selective sharing) and Monitor 2 for seeing Gallery View, Participant List and Chat List and the Zoom Toolbar for any room management. Is that the case?

    • @BenFinio
      @BenFinio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on what exactly you want your monitors to show, you can also change which is your primary monitor in your Windows settings and from within Powerpoint you can choose what you want to show on which monitor and/or disable presenter mode entirely.

  • @SylviaAdamsEP
    @SylviaAdamsEP 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Ben! Thank you so much for this tutorial. I don't know if you've answered this already in another video. I did a search and I could not find it. I know you can let multiple participants share their screen and you can toggle b/w the two "shared screens" under but what about "co-hosts" being able to share their screens side-by-side at the same time? I found the setting under "Security" where you can keep participants from sharing their screen and I have found where "only the host" can share their screen but what if you ONLY want the other "co-hosts" to share their screen and at the same time?
    I even looked for it in the settings when you log into your account online and in their knowledge base but all I could find is how you can toggle between 2 shared screens for participants. Sorry for the long comment and it seems like everybody is asking for this feature.

    • @BenFinio
      @BenFinio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sylvia - good question -they just released a "multi-pin" and "multi-spotlight" feature which I know a lot of people have been asking about for student group presentations. Apparently this update was actually at the beginning of August, but it wasn't an automatic update so you need to update to Zoom 5.2 manually. I just found out about it a couple days ago, and haven't had time to try it out or make a new video yet. However, as far as I can tell from the description, this feature will JUST be for participants' videos and not simultaneous screen sharing: blog.zoom.us/teachers-top-features-for-securing-virtual-classrooms-enhancing-student-learning-experiences/ (scroll down to the "Enhance class management" section).

      Hi Catherine - yes, as long as your camera is on, people can still see you, even if you minimize Zoom or open other programs on top of it. Unfortunately if you want both the Powerpoint slides and presenter view open, powerpoint will hog both monitors - if you still want to see the Zoom meeting easily, you'd need an extra laptop.

      Hi James - I have another video on the multi-spotlight feature but I don't think I tested it with two monitors: th-cam.com/video/RZIn9AxSRrU/w-d-xo.html. Honestly my best suggestion is to try and replicate the setting you want - join a meeting with multiple computers, get some friends/family to join etc, and then try it out to see if you can get the layout you want to work.

    First of all, THANK YOU. I've been fighting with my Zoom settings trying to do this for far too long. Secondly, when I teach, I like to have the chat merged to the meeting window, so I can always keep an eye on it, but when I share my screen (even with using dual monitors), it hides the chat. I can still access the chat in pop out mode while I'm screen sharing, but it's annoying to have to move it around and resize it - I want it attached to my gallery view meeting window. Do you know if this is possible?

    • @BenFinio
      @BenFinio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately I'm not sure if that's possible. I agree it's annoying! The best option I can suggest if you have an extra laptop is to have that open nearby, and then you can have a "regular" meeting view with no screen sharing.

I am now able to see the presentation on the laptop and see everyone in gallery view in the monitor, and now know how to find that if the PP takes over - massive leaps! But, ideally I would like to have the gallery view on the laptop and the presentation on the monitor, otherwise it looks like I am gazing up into space when I am looking at the participants - is that possible? Hi Emily - this video should help: th-cam.com/video/g0z2i_Na3Uo/w-d-xo.html. Independent of Zoom, there are controls within Powerpoint that allow you to control what appears on which monitor. On the Slideshow tab in Powerpoint there is a checkbox that lets you turn presenter view on/off (I recommend turning that off otherwise PPT will try to hog both monitors) and a drop-down menu that lets you select which monitor you want the slides to appear on. I am forced to use zoom. Therefore, if I have my IMac as the main computer in which I activate presenter view without notes showing. I know how to do this, but my picture is very small and not easily seen.
    MY QUESTION: If use my MacBook pro as a second Monitor, can I switch to the second monitor can the audience see a large live picture of me speaking, and when I want to go back to the Powerpoint switch back to the iMac? and switch back and forth.

      Hi - whether you are on dual monitors or not doesn't really affect what the audience sees. If you want the audience to also see a large picture of you, you should encourage them to use side by side mode, where they can adjust the relative sizes of the Powerpoint and your picture. You cannot force them into this view mode though, they need to do it themselves. This video may help: th-cam.com/video/v3IPAbpVjd4/w-d-xo.html

    (Scenario, if it helps: I have a person zooming in to in-person classes. I'm trying to set it up with one monitor facing the in-class participants and one monitor facing the teacher, both monitors viewing the zoom participant full screen. And I want to share screen with a second camera so the zoom participant see the teacher from the built-in camera and sees the rest of the class with the 2nd camera.
