It's so inspiring to watch this! When I was 12, I broke my femur and severed my femoral artery in a sledding accident. My artery was patched with an artery from my ankle, and they set my femur with a rod and screws. I've got so many scars from the surgeries and the month I spent in the hospital afterwards, but am fully functional now! Cheering for Alex Smith this weekend!

My Mum was in a motorbike accident in the 60's UK. She severed her left foot. Muscle was taken from right thigh and transplanted in her left foot/calf to allow her to raise and drop her foot again. It was exploratory surgery by the UK NHS at that time. There was other damage (too long to explain) she had 17 surgeries and spent 3 years in hospital. Including gangrene. But it held fast until she was in her 60's. Its amazing what a good surgeon and determination can accomplish.

It is sad though that had it been the average joe they would’ve just amputated without going to the lengths they did. Personally if it had happened to me, I would’ve opted for amputation given that I still had the knee and a decent portion of tibia. As a runner I’d take a prosthetic over a foot with foot drop and no toe lift

I had developed MRSA (after a lateral release surgery) which eventually ate away my ACL and most of the Vastus Medialus. The ACL was replaced by a weave of cadaver ligament tissue and some of my won patellar ligament, and the muscle replaced with a similar weave of cutouts from two different quads (one from each leg). The amount of Physical Therapy I went through just to return to a normal life being a musician and college professor was intense, and I can’t even begin to imagine what he went through and continues to struggle with today. The Comeback Player of the Year Award should be changed and be called the Alex Smith Award in my opinion, and I cringe every single time he drops back into the pocket.
