The 120fps in 4K is a game changer for me! I just posted a video today where I shot pelicans and a bald eagle at 120fps. Grey Owls are on my bucket list. I'll make it out west in the next couple of years. Maybe after I pick up the new 400mm! But then again, if I buy that, I probably won't be able to afford to head out west! Awesome work! I especially enjoy that you are doing it right...letting the owl do its thing with wild prey and using solid interpretation of animal behavior in the field! It makes the experience and the imagery that much more powerful! Excellent!

Ive normally shot Nikon, but is the Z9 worth that extra money over the R5? Id really appreciate some input, thanks. I would be using the Nikon 100-400mm Z or the Canon 100-500mm RF on either camera.
I am currently using the D850 and D500. I'd really love to get the Z9 for video due to the fact that the DSLR can't handhold video or even autofocus right in live view. I'm just not sure which camera I should keep if any and if I should wait to make the mirrorless transition. I can do 4k videos of stationary wildlife with a tripod, but nothing moving or in flight.

At 148 it did go off the eye and up to a contrasty tree limb. But like you said it did recover in a few seconds. But it's the hit rate that matters. Excellent preliminary review and nice shots.
Excellent, loved the tracking of the owl. Would you be let us know what your settings were for tracking (wide, 3D etc..) and also what you have set for A1 (release or Focus) and A3 (Blocked shot and subject motion) ?
If you're a Nikon shooter and bought into the Nikon Ecosystem the Z9 is a no brainer if you have the bucks. I feel both Nikon and Sony need something more in the R5 price /performance bracket as well. Nikon may deliver at that price point but it's a big jump from an A9II to an A1 and Sony seem intent on forcing A9II owners up to the A1. Meanwhile, Canon doesn't have any serious competition to the R5. The R3 is just to niche for me to consider it for my needs. Good to see Nikon back in the mirrorless game. Great video btw.
I think we will get a z8 at these prices and it will be a smaller version of the z9, with basically same sensor and expeed 7, but smaller buffer, perhaps not same viewfinder tech and some cut down tech like 30p 8k and no internal prores for video. For me, either they will keep a z7iii at lets say 3k and z6iii at 2k that will both at least get the expeed 7, but with different tech, or get rid of the z7 line. They can't continue for long with this lineup. I mean it is too much of a technological jump between the z6, z7 and the z9. It creates envy and frustration because the others have in between cameras at different price points with different tech for everyone.
I think nikon will drop Z8 later this year, it's likely going to inherit a lot from the Z9 without the grip at $3800 price range. It will be the true replacement for D850.

I wish you all TH-camrs would pay as much attention to sound as you do on image quality. I’m here talking about sound levels. I constantly have turn volume up and down because you all play the music much too loud and/or speech too low.

I was on 3D tracking pretty much the whole time! I tried the other areas too out there but had the most success on 3D

Owls fly pretty slow so just about any camera can capture a good photo of them.
Not true at all. My d850 really struggled with the owls flying towards me
