    Is a 100% keeper rate possible? This video will take you through two examples demonstrating just how good the Nikon Z9 is at tracking a Snowy Owl. I am using the Nikon 500PF lens in this testing. The first series of Nikon Z9 images are in full sunshine. The next series is in very low light. The Nikon Z9 tracks this Snowy Owl in both cases from lift-off to right in front of the lens with 100% success in both cases. I'll also show you during this video how I make decisions on which image to select as the one for printing or posting to my website.
    If you set up your Nikon Z9 per my two settings guides for birds in flight (links above), you will be all set up to capture your best birds in flight images ever. If you are interested to more about high ISO performance for the Nikon Z9 follow this link to my High ISO Field Test

    Nikon Z9 is still the best camera on low auto-focus sensitivity in the market today. It goes down to - 8.5 EV. There's no camera in the market yet with that capability. That in itself is really impressive.

      @@Coolwildlife1 I have a D850/power grip and on the fence about updating to Z9, but the FPS, eye detection and AF are nice features to add to BIF. Doesn’t help the trade in vale is half of new!! The FTZ makes it affordable in that the F glass works as good or better. A friend used my 500f4g on the Z9 and I was very impressed with the photos! Has been my experience as well - the biggest issues I have seen with others is using 3d tracking, but not putting the focus point on the subject, or inability to keep the subject in the frame or in the focus area they are using. You may want to to try Auto/Area with single subjects it works quite well, and is very fast in finding locking on. Thanks for your vid.

    • @Coolwildlife1
      @Coolwildlife1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John, you are bang on, whichever AF mode you select getting the focus point on the subject's eye from the start is key. I tried Auto-area and if it locked on it was great but when it lost focus I could not get it back on the subject so I bailed on that mode. Wide area was just too good.

      @@Coolwildlife1 In due course, I expect so. I have no Zed equipment yet and did add a D6 and 500mm PF in the last 18 months so managing my transition into the Zed world with existing lenses will be my priority. Frankly, my biggest challenge the last six months has just been getting out. With retirement happening this spring, that should ease. Also, I’m trying to practice the philosophy of adding a piece of equipment only when it specifically helps me solve a current photographic challenge…not just for the sake of a new piece of kit, however sexy it maight be. It’s a great time to be a photographer…so much great gear.

      @@marcusslade9804 You're retiring this Spring -- I have to pieces of advice: 1. Get the Z9 immediately upon retirement, and worry about what you'll eat later. 2. Make it clear to everyone (especially your wife) that you have a pretty rigid shooting schedule, so as to not fill up your calendar with 'Honey Do's' and projects for other family and friends. Take it from one who knows, after you retire you will wonder why you had more time back when you were gainfully employed full time!

    Very informative video. Keep up the good work Bill. This is awesome. I have recently purchased a Nikon D780 (extremely satisfied) because I do not want to go ML. I have too many Nikon F lenses (about 15) and three Nikon bodies (D780, D500, D7200). As I am not a professional and a retired person , the budget would be too high for me to switch. Another new concern seems to arise as the keep rate is now almost 100%. The dilemma is what shot to choose from, there are so many good shots. Also so many good shots for what purpose? Printing? Then where could I possibly put all those prints, I do not have enough walls :-). In the film days, when I first shot in the seventies with my Pentax Spotmatic F, with only 36 exposures per film, the concerns were much fewer! In the end, I might add a Z9 sibling (Z8 or whatever) when they arrive in 2-3 year time, because, according to the excellent recent video from Steve Perry, the Z adapter does not slow down the autofocus of a Z9 on F mount lenses, at least those opening at f2.8 (300mm, 70-200, 24-70).

    Enjoyed your video, Bill, you lucky man! The Z9 and a snowy owl all at once. Just wondering why you shot at 1/6400 when the light was waning...couldn't you have gotten away with 1/3200? It might have cut down on the keeper rate but looks like you could have cut out some noise and still had some great keepers. I am very envious! Thanks for the guide!

      Hi Teri, I could have gotten away with 1/3200th for sure but ISO of 1600 is very clean so I pushed the shutter speed up just to make sure I froze the action. The shutter speed was dropped to 1/3200th when the light began to fade along with an adjustment to f/5.6 from f/8 to grab more light. As a rule I like how you're thinking, go with the lowest ISO possible while maintaining a fast enough shutter speed for good results. My motto is that it is better to have an image that is noisier but sharp than not noisy and not in focus. I can not recover an out of focus image but I can recover from noise with www.topazlabs.com/denoise-ai/ref/414/

    The image at 8:44 appears to have a fair bit of motion blur showing on the catch light. Looks like vertical lens motion, but perhaps just TH-cam effects. Great images and good to see solid low light focussing. Try pushing the iso a bit more too.

      @@Coolwildlife1 I don’t have a Ninja 5 and can’t record myself, but I have pretty much the same problems like shown here th-cam.com/video/r17fzyJ4oSs/w-d-xo.html - I tested the Sony a1 with the 200-600 5.6-6.3, the subject and eye detection works perfect also on birds sitting in bushes throughout the branches and it sticks to the eyes and head in case of bird turning head. The firmware of the Z9 is not there yet. My a3 settings are are blocked shot set to 4 and subject motion to erratic. But that’s not the point, subject is not detected at all. Dogs running towards me, each 2nd image focus plane is behind the head, even if eyes are perfectly detected and the square sticks to them during shooting, lossless compressed, 15 fps, Wyse 256 GB CFexpress, 70-200E FL ED VR on FTZ2. On the a1, the same thing results in 100% picks. Don’t get me wrong, I’m totally Nikon fanboy since I’m shooting with my first Nikon, the FM2n mid 1980s. And I don’t like the Sony colours, this point alone is reason enough to never switch. I just want to adjust the hype a little bit. For movie guys the Z9 is a must, ProRes directly to the card, for outdoor tasks as good as it gets, no bulky gear to carry.

      @@rolandrick I was interested in the experience you shared and video. I have not noticed the eye detect jumping around like that with the snowy owls I have been shooting, but that could be because their eyes are so much more prominent and yellow. I also did not observe that behavior with the mallard ducks. I'm sure we will be seeing additional firmware updates that hopefully address this issue.

    I wanted to love the 500pf and switch to it but I have the 500FL and it just couldn't compete, and unfortunately I couldn't justify keeping both. I would have bought the 180-400FL at the time I bought my 500FL, but it was sold out and even NPS couldn't get me a USA lens. So I got the 500FL and my friends all have the 500pf. Comparing the two, 500pf owner's love to say the 500pf is just as sharp, but look at their MTF charts and that is not true, especially if you stop down the f/4 to f/5.6 it's absolutely noticeably sharper to my eye and I am blessed with 20-10 vision, right eye dominant and tested the highest ever for peripheral vision as well. I can read the bottom lines of eye test charts and can read in near pitch darkness lol. I am a weirdo as far as vision so maybe I see more of a difference? I am not here to brag or boast and I am saying all of this to ask or say...is it the TH-cam compression or just me? Are these not all sharp? They look good, some are quite sharp, but many appeared much less sharp than I know my lens and D850 can do. I'm honestly curious and wonder if it is just me or what? I wish I could afford to have the 500pf too, but I can't afford that, lol. I am however very happy with my 500FL copy and my TC-14E III that lives on it.
