Those dudes had punishing as fuck slams with super low-tuned guitars, killer vocals, and one of the most interesting drummers I've ever heard. They demand attention for sure!

The new format was tight - great improvement! Lisa kept the comment stream relevant, Daniel nailed it as host, and Cam has to be the best co-host yet!
Limiting it to 10 bands seems to be needlessly binding; having 12 or maybe 15 would be better in times like this. Instead of forcing constrictions I think it would be better to let organic conversations fully flesh out instead of saying "oh shit we have 12 bands so let's get rid of 2." Also one band can strongly be rooted in 2 subgenres. Devourment definitely has a place here and as the legends of slam.
Totally agree on the 10 bands argument. Sometimes it gets a bit silly when they are counting the bands and getting rid of a few bands. Although, I also agree that in some previous episodes there was no filter at all, just every band that got mentioned made it to the board, ending up with 20 bands or so ... all of them "essential"...
Defeated Sanity should have been included. They are without a doubt one the most important bands in the genre in the last 15 years. Pushing it's limits even further with technicality and crushing brutality. Personally I would have also included Gorgasm to the list.
There have been genre discussion episodes where i have little knowledge of the music or bands, but i still tune in religiously because i love the discussion. Keep it up Banger.
last.fm says they invented slam so looks like they'd be mentioned if you do a Slam episode... "Slamming Brutal Death Metal (or Slam for short) is a Brutal Death Metal subgenre which focuses on the 'mosh' parts (slams) rather than the blasting parts. The genre started in 1991 by the idea focused by Internal Bleedingbut was not recognised as an official sub-genre until 1995 when their debut album Voracious Contempt was released"
Best Lock Horns episode so far, both are very knowledgeable on BDM and I was very satisfied with the list at the end. Oh, and definitely do a Slam Death Metal Band Debate!
Wormed has to be my favourite BDM band, for many reasons. 1. Instead of the standard affair of gore and blood, Wormed approaches themes of despair and brutality through a Sci-Fi narrative about the last human in the universe, having to fight through a war almost entirely by himself. This is not only unique, but also in theme, and the music properly conveys the darker sides of the universe, as opposed to many other TechDeath Sci-Fi bands out there. 2. They have a massively distinct sound even amongst the genres that they could be classed as. Someone described them as the Car Bomb of BDM, and I think it’s perfect as it’s truly crazy music. Basically, they fuse Technical Brutal Death Metal with Dissonant Death Metal, as well as a little bit of Mathcore, with odd time signatures, tempo changes, discordant song writing and rich atonal riffs. 3. Much like Defeated Sanity, they are the diamonds in the rough, the very few to turn Brutal Death Metal into an art form, much like many bands did in the 90s. If I had to go to a classically trained musician and recommend him something from BDM, Wormed would be one of my recommendations.
I’m not a huge fan of death metal especially this more extreme side but Cannibal Cam is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable it’s hard to not love the episodes he’s in. He reminds me of my dad just switch death w/thrash

Atmospheric Black Metal, one of my favorites! Looking forward to Sam and Blayne arguing over semantics. Legends gotta be either Abigor, Summoning, Blut Aus Nord, or Ulver. They were more ambient, using synths and drum programming to add new textures while still maintaining the traditional black metal tone and aesthetic (usually Satanic or Tolkien-inspired). The second wave are bands that became less blasphemous and extreme, and focused more on a bleak, expansive atmosphere achieved by mixing folk instruments, doom-laden riffs, and less blast-beat-heavy drumming. This includes Agalloch, Negura Bunget, Xasthur, Leviathan, Drudkh, and Wolves in the Throne Room. There are a ton of newer bands taking the style in new directions like Panopticon, Fen, Windfaerer, Caladan Brood, Saor, and Eldamar. What I notice in atmospheric black metal is the similarity to folk metal, post metal, and blackgaze. One could argue that all of these bands could fit into all of these subgenres interchangeably!

Love the guest host and guest Cannibal Cam Schwarz--the dude's super knowledgeable & can actually "sing" some of the brutal metal live. Thanks for mixing it uppppp!
The description of brutal death metal sounds like deathcore, but with more death metal than hardcore/metalcore influence. When people say the word... "breakdown," people immediately think the really slow deathcore riffs. I think Dying Fetus was removed from tech death, so where would they be? Maybe I'm wrong. And THANK YOU for playing songs introducing the bands! Makes the show more entertaining.
Watching in 2020 in the middle of Covid. Really love this episode, and still waiting for the Growl documentary. Shame no U.K. bands included such as Desecration and Amputated (RIP).
I get the argument that "It's all death metal" but if you're doing a show about a "brutal death metal" genre specifically then yes, you have to differentiate the bands and omit some that may not fit specifically into the style you are trying to pigeonhole. If you're going with the argument "it's all death metal" then Lock Horns would have ended 10 episodes back!! So yeah, for that reason alone, bring on the sub-sub-sub genres....
"Brutal death metal" bands played hit people hardcore punk with death metal aesthetics. They and took inspiration from Suffocation and Morpheus Descends, whom the cargo short wearers dubbed “technical brutal death metal” despite them coming earlier, actually playing death metal, and with most of the “brutality” coming from thrash and speed metal. The “brutal death metal” deathcore crowd attempted to become part of death metal in the mid to late 90s by trying to “expand the genre.” The slam ‘tards who ate this stuff up in the late 90s were trying to co-opt their crossover thrash tastes into something greater just as war metal fans attempted about ten to fifteen years later by claiming that the bands they loved to sort of mosh to played “black metal”. They wanted to be death metal as death metal was once great in their own area of the Northeastern United States. The slam bands wanted to co-opt the greatness of Suffocation, Immolation, Incantation, and Morpheus Descends by just calling themselves a “sub-genre” of death metal despite playing hardcore songs that made the Cro-Mags seem as metal as Bathory. They failed miserably. Nobody who didn’t dress like DMX took them seriously for good reason in the 90s. You shouldn’t either today.P
I would say Broken Hope and Suffocation are really the first true bdm bands. Bands like Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation get too much credit though, and soon after that there came more modern bands that were cloning their sound. I just feel like Broken Hope contributed the most to Bdm yet they don't really get much credit imo. But yeah also bands like Morpheus Descends and Baphomet really helped pioneer or innovated that sound as well.
Beatdown HxC and PxVx don't really have anything to do with metal and this kinda is a metal show. Don't get me wrong though I like both genres, especially PxVx
If you guys can make a whole episode out of blackgaze, then you can definitely make an episode about slam hahaha. Slam is a big scene right now and has been very steadily infiltrating influencing the underground deathcore and hardcore scenes. Kraanium, Analepsy, Vulvodynia, Acrania, Waking The Cadaver, Ingested, Pathology, etc. So much to talk about! It's HUGE in the underground scene.
Awesome episode, but how did Internal Bleeding only get mentioned as an afterthought? To me, and a lot of others I’m sure, they were a precursor to slam just as much as Devourment.
Was pleased to see that they put Suffocation first, absolutely the founders. Deeds, Dying Fetus, Devourment, Skinless, Disgorge i all agree with as early innovators. They left out a couple of the early other NYDM bands like Pyrexia though. Mortician I consider death grind. Cryptopsy I consider tech death. Was gonna say Broken Hope, but they got it. Abominable Putridity, while a great band, bit late to be put on that list.
Yous should do an extreme death metal episode next with the legends probably being Malevolent creation or immolation and some main bands aborted, benighted, cattle décapitation, aeon, abysmal dawn, hate eternal, decapitated, severe torture.
It's insane that Incantation- Onward to Golgotha , and Immolation - Dawn of Possession were not considered . Both albums meet the criteria . Broken Hope is too slow all the time
Malevolent Creation's "in cold blood" was and still is one of the most brutal death metal albums ever. I know they are more defined as death metal but this album is way more aggressive, violent and extreme than maybe anything came out that year..
Man, this is my favourite lock horns episode. I love the one with Deathdoom and Blayne but Cam's enthusiasm is fucking infectious, couple that with his insurmountable knowledge and experience and we have a Guru. That and Daniel is a fantastic host.
Been listening to all types of metal, including Death Metal for 17+ years. I could always differentiate Technical Death Metal & Melodic Death Metal from both one another and traditional Death Metal, but never could wrap my head around “Brutal” Death Metal needing its own sub genre. But, after this video, I totally get it now. Although, I always thought Suffocation was a Tech Death band.
I'm a metalhead first and foremost, so I love these things, but LL should totally do a spin-off where she debates over different goth/industrial subgenres. I'd watch that just as religiously as I watch Lock Horns.
Can we have a website that is regularly updated for this ever-changing, ever-growing Metal Family Tree? Fucking love all of you metal fuckers! Cheers! \,,/

I'm a massive Suffocation fan but the same day I bought Internal Bleeding's first album I threw it in the trash. Unlistenable garbage, cant understand why people give them so much respect.
I'm late to the party but Aborted and Mortician are way more deathgrind than brutal and Abominable Putridity is fucking slam! Still a good episode. Glad they're talking about the more extreme genre's more so for the bands getting the recognitions they deserve.

Vocals indescereable, NOT inaudible. Besides that I've learned a bunch in an zone in not familiar with.
Brutal death metal was waaaayyy before deathcore.
Watching in 2020 in the middle of Covid. Really love this episode, and still waiting for the Growl documentary.
Shame no U.K. bands included such as Desecration and Amputated (RIP).
I wish there were more spots for bands.
I’ve re watched this episode more than any other past Lock Horns. Cannibal Cam rules. I hope more brutal music Lock Horns can come about this year
Thanks a bunch, we love doing this and bringing some crazy new tunes to everyone.
Same. If you were new to BRUTAL, this episode would be the primer leading to hours of new research to keep oneself BRUTAL.
The “brutal death metal” deathcore crowd attempted to become part of death metal in the mid to late 90s by trying to “expand the genre.”
The slam ‘tards who ate this stuff up in the late 90s were trying to co-opt their crossover thrash tastes into something greater just as war metal fans attempted about ten to fifteen years later by claiming that the bands they loved to sort of mosh to played “black metal”.
Love Despised Icon! Great guys too. Got to talk to them at a Suffocation concert. They always draw big crowds here in Montreal
Genres/sub genres to do shows on
Noisegrind
Goregrind
Raw Black Metal
War/Bestial Black Metal
Beatdown Hardcore
Power Violence
Beatdown HxC and PxVx don't really have anything to do with metal and this kinda is a metal show. Don't get me wrong though I like both genres, especially PxVx
@@mthgbln6422 although they did an episode on Hardcore Punk so Beatdown it's the farest step, maybe Bradley could be the guest this time :)
I can only imagine Tony from the Killbot and Gorgor Attack TH-cam channel being the guest expert on goregrind, just watch his video on the genre
Crossover Thrash
Blackened Thrash
Death Thrash
Funeral Doom
Technical Thrash
Death 'n' Roll
Black 'n' Roll
Pornogrind
Wtf is war/bestial black metal?!? Would u mind throwin me a couple names so I can check it out?🤕
polls greatly improved the lightning round, great job. daniel and cam were awesome!
nospaulatu Thanks man.

More Cannibal Cam
nwo Razor Ramone Wooooo!! Would love to go back on.
Great video. You missed Decaying Purity and Posthumous Blasphemer.
None so Vile though is outright brutality. Other stuff they've have is tech, but still harder than many good tech death bands.
@@oumgia5643 most of cryptopsys albums are brutal death metal for sure.
Really really really want you guys to do another Post Metal episode! maybe the essential albums debate or something please please please!!! thankyou x
Disavowed 🤘🏼
Kinda disappointed that Extermination Dismemberment wasn't mentioned. They are one sick band from Belarus 🤘🏻and kinda new
There is alwasy the Slam episode to bring that up in. Shhhhhhhh.
Yous should do an extreme death metal episode next with the legends probably being Malevolent creation or immolation and some main bands aborted, benighted, cattle décapitation, aeon, abysmal dawn, hate eternal, decapitated, severe torture.
How is Internal Bleeding not on this list?
It's insane that Incantation- Onward to Golgotha , and Immolation - Dawn of Possession were not considered . Both albums meet the criteria . Broken Hope is too slow all the time
Not brutal death metal. I'd put them in just death metal.
gosh the audio made this hard to watch, but yes Suffocation!!!
Suffocation over CC all day! Cam is right on the ball this whole episode.
Matt Byrne Thanks man. Was a blast doing this episode.
I'd take dying fetus over both
@@hornyconvict These days, absolutely. Saw them at a festival with Suffocation like 10 years ago. Great show.
@@amphibeingmcshpongletron5026 yeah I really love their 2010s output
Don't forget all the fucking pinch harmonics, yebat

Amongst the cataCOOOMBS.
Hahahaha.
This guys pronounciation of words was inspired HEAVILY by either spicoli or Canada or both.
Great analysis of the scene,I also love Acrania, Pathology, Severed Savior.
Franco Barbamazco Thnaks man.
But Acrania is deathcore
Malevolent Creation's "in cold blood" was and still is one of the most brutal death metal albums ever. I know they are more defined as death metal but this album is way more aggressive, violent and extreme than maybe anything came out that year..
Man, this is my favourite lock horns episode. I love the one with Deathdoom and Blayne but Cam's enthusiasm is fucking infectious, couple that with his insurmountable knowledge and experience and we have a Guru. That and Daniel is a fantastic host.
Wooooooo!!! Wicked good times.
“Brodequin from Texas”
Been listening to all types of metal, including Death Metal for 17+ years. I could always differentiate Technical Death Metal & Melodic Death Metal from both one another and traditional Death Metal, but never could wrap my head around “Brutal” Death Metal needing its own sub genre. But, after this video, I totally get it now. Although, I always thought Suffocation was a Tech Death band.
Darth Walshus and so much more.
CRYPTOPSY. first two albums are immaculate. fucking legendary. so sad they've been ruined by their current incarnation.
I'm a metalhead first and foremost, so I love these things, but LL should totally do a spin-off where she debates over different goth/industrial subgenres. I'd watch that just as religiously as I watch Lock Horns.
Broken Hope was one of the first!!!
This is definitely the most enjoyable episode so far. Finally brutal death metal
Can we have a website that is regularly updated for this ever-changing, ever-growing Metal Family Tree? Fucking love all of you metal fuckers! Cheers! \,,/
Hey Ian. Here's a spreadsheet we made to keep track of all the new additions and revisions to the original metal tree. One day there may be a whole website. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HwGEP2N4gS8Qng0pjWlFL-sU61jE-bw8-w46gXentec/edit
Best one so far! Get that guy in to do brutal death album reviews!!
Josiah Russell I totally would love to. Thanks.
I'm a massive Suffocation fan but the same day I bought Internal Bleeding's first album I threw it in the trash. Unlistenable garbage, cant understand why people give them so much respect.
Great debate, the guest REALLY knew his shit - I feel enlightened!
iBrainMedia Death metal is the only genre. Lol
i love your show... but please double check your sound before the show. pretty please!
I'm late to the party but Aborted and Mortician are way more deathgrind than brutal and Abominable Putridity is fucking slam! Still a good episode. Glad they're talking about the more extreme genre's more so for the bands getting the recognitions they deserve.
Night Breed I wish I could talk about way more bands.
