I would love to see a video on other extreme metal labels like: Relapse, Nuclear Blast, Metal Blade, and Roadrunner. All greats labels with awesome bands, especially Roadrunner for all of the old school death metal/thrash albums they released.

one of the 'key' records ever. surprised that show's hosts never heard of it. it was quite a big hit in eastern europe in early 90s. it's actually very interesting how for the fuck sake metal gurus from north america this record is a blank space. wtf?
But given that, at least they had the openness to include them on the board. And maybe turn on hundreds (or thousands) who haven’t had them in their radar until now. Sam’s so cool.
There needs to be a documentary on Earache, that label brought extreme metal/music to a wider audience and a lot bands wouldn't have a legendary status if wasn't for that label.
Just goes to show, once again, there needs to be a revisiting of the Post Metal episode, or at least an essential albums episode, because Somewhere Along the Highway is a masterpiece of the highest order, and massively influential to every post metal band who came thereafter. PLEASE DO THIS.
Sadly ended up missing the first half of the episode, but you people obviously did well without me. Really like what this list ended up as. Really well-balanced list in terms of genres, showing the wide impact Earache had and still continues to have on metal as a whole.
1. From Enslavement 2. Altars of Madness 3. Realm of Chaos 4. Symphonies of Sickness 5. Streetcleaner 6. World Downfall 7. Left Hand Path 8. The Key 9. Clandestine 10. Necroticism
Yea Vektor is at the top of the thrash foodchain by a loooot. Its thrash and it has death metal elements and its blackened and it has atmosphere to spare and its progier than fucking dream theater and its some of the most extreme music out there and it has some soul fusion on the last record oh and just in case you forget its strangely melodic and cold as deep space and its technical as fuck and it has brilliant songwriting and they threw all that in a cauldron stirred it a bit AND MADE IT FUCKING WORK THE MADMEN. Yea no good fucking luck topping that other thrash bands. Vektor had so much momentum and was going places before the guys left the band, lets hope Dave gets a new lineup together and give us more Vektor. Cuz we all need more space eagle in our lives. Sci-fi or fucking die!
Nocturnus played an awesome gig here in Boston at the old channel club opening for Napalm Death around 90-91??? There were a couple other bands on that crazy bill - one was a metallic hardcore band with a guy and female singer called Nausea.
Great video guys Sam Dunn I just wanna say your a top bloke loved your documentaries metal a headbangers journey and global metal very interesting it's great you include some of the obscure bands as well as the legends my top 15 is in no particular order 1 Carcass Heartwork - Absolute masterpiece they mixed grindcore, death metal and melody all together such a perfect mix love the guitar work too quality solos. 2 Morbid Angel Altars of Madness what can I say sounds so fucking evil and brutal such a tight album from start to finish love the theme and the artwork too 3 Entombed Left Hand Path this album is quality saw these guys live last night in Melbourne Australia amazing played mainly first 3 albums, anyway love this albums atmosphere you feel like your in a horror film or a dark forest
Sorry didn't mean to send that extended list 4 Bolt Thrower Realm of chaos classic so brutal sounds like a tank raging hell causing all destruction in its path 5 Massacre From Beyond old school as fuck love this album every track brutal and straight to the point 6 Napalm Death Scum the legend is born raw, brutal mixing death, grind and hardcore punk all together you'll never get an album that sounds like that again 7 Deicide The stench of redemption this album is one of my favourites of theirs one of my favourite bands love the guitar work on homage for Satan sounds like I'm in the very fiery depths of hell for all eternity definitely one of the best modern Deicide albums 8 Decapitated Nihility what a fucking technical masterpiece really tight album start to finish I love headbanging like crazy to spheres of madness 9 Akercocke Choronzon Love Akercocke they mix black, death, prog so well this album is my favourite so evil love it 10 Terrorozer World Downfall masterpiece perfect grindcore release from start to finish
CATHEDRAL's debut still stands the test of time as one of the most significant albums in the doom metal echelon and paved the way for death-doom bands that would follow. If you think it's "too slow" you need to smoke a joint and sit back for another listen to really let that gloomy horror absorb your entire soul.
So many classic records! For more locked horns you should've gonna for a top ten. :) One I really missed was The Haunted's debut album - what a killer!
it's interesting how people discover bands in their inner circles. I'm a year younger than Sam, grew up in Michigan and Nocturnus was something I found without magazines, internet (didn't exist) and I think it was pretty well known in my area. On the other hand, I had never heard of Sleep and At the Gates until much later, probably my mid 30's.
Glad to see Bolt-Thrower up there!! I just recently heard of them going through a Heavy Metal compilation and heard a couple of their songs and was actually surprised how much I liked them when I'm a picky bastard when it comes to Thrash & Death Metal which I also just got into with finding the band Death!! But seems everybody is wayy more into the later progressive albums of them when I much prefer their 1st 3 albums Scream Bloody Gore, Leprosy & Spiritual Healing \m/ \m/
Nocturnus' "The Key" is a masterpiece, along with their other 2 albums (and debut EP) IMO. Surprised none of them knew about the band but that's cool, there are just too many bands to know them all.
I still have Morbid Angel Alters Of Madness on cassette tape and it still plays good but at that time there had never been a music mixed with so many elements that had such incredible clarity. While I loved when David's vocals got even heavier a little later on, the music on this record is second to none!
@Banger Are you planning an Atmoblack show any time soon? A relatively newer genre for sure but rather big for more recent metal history. I'd totally take a day off work to be able to participate!
BANGER @Banger Well, you could handle it two ways. Go just with atmoblack or since there is so much crossover between the two genres you could do an Atmospheric/Pagan Black metal episode to be able to fit in acts like Agalloch, Moonsorrow, Windir, and Nokturnal Mortum that are too much black metal to necessarily be counted as folk metal. As far as bands definitely Burzum or Ulver as the legend. Especially the Filosofem and Hvis Lyset Tar Oss albums or Bergtatt for Ulver. Some important/great albums would include Weakling - Dead As Dreams, Summoning (which album is very much up for debate), Wolves in the Throne Room - Two Hunters, Drudkh - Autumn Aurora, Forteresse - Metal Noir Quebecois, Darkspace - III, Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II, Aquilus - Griseus, Ash Borer - Cold of Ages, Fen - The Malediction Fields, Fyrnask - Eldir Nott, Mare Cognitum - Phobos Monolith
I would like to see Atlantic/Sanctuary. But some other ones that I know of are Nuclear Blast, Roadrunner/SPV/Limb, Capitol(maybe), Century Media (not so sure about them since somebody else said there aren't that many great bands but they have releases from Iced Earth, NIGHTWISH, and Lacuna Coil), Spinefarm, Sony(Judas Priest), Warner Bros (Black Sabbath and A7X), Megaforce, and Elektra. You could also do essential record labels but that wouldn't be a very long episode.
Not even a mention of Berzerker? Poor Sam, even after he counted to 12 instead of subtracting 3 from 15, he has to count up to 13 twice instead of subtracting 2 from 15. 57:20, 58:45. Hopefully the Metal Blade, Nuclear Blast, and Century Media essential album debates will feature a grid so he doesn't have to count.
Essential Industrial Metal albums: Fear Factory - Demanufacture Godflesh - Streetcleaner NIN - Broken (their only metal album) Ministry - Land of Rape and Honey or The Mind is a terrible thing to taste KMFDM - Angst or Symbols ** Sybreed
I might be the only person who knew about Earache as a youngin' (I'm talking like 8, or so), so I don't think I deserve any flak for calling them EAR-RASH records until my early teens when I had, "wait a minute," moment after looking at the logo properly. Good thing there's no elitists in the third grade; they would have ripped me to shreds.
Necroticizm was that missing link album that you mentioned & dismissed. So many mind-bending transitional riffs [to this day] that drive innovation in ALL of metal. You're free to disagree, but it's the sun of my musical universe... Heartwork was Carcass trying to be Judas Priest, & overachieving it!
thankfully the crowd got it right and SLEEP made the list. That and GODFLESH are outside the norm, but both hugely influential and, honestly, while I owned pretty much all those 80s/early90's albums, the two I listen to now, years later. normally watching these after the fact has me shouting at the tv, but this one ended up about spot on - though i was on the cusp of hurling a cerveza when you removed Sleep... in retrospect amazing the quality and quantity of bands that went through Earache.
A bit late to watch this.... Napalm Death, Carcass, Bolt Thrower and Morbid Angel... All seen together on the Epic Grindcrusher tour in 89. Nothing since, has come close!!!!
When The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza broke up years ago it left a giant hole in extreme metal that was near impossible to fill... Until Frontierer came along. Review Orange Mathematics. I dont care if Im the only one saying it, Im going to keep saying it. It's an incredible piece of metal that's gotten the nod from Rolling Stone already!
I dont get ANY news, that I didnt know. Take "Nocturnus" are mentioned, but dont add its former Morbid A. drummer 'Mike Browning' on vox/drums. I miss the anekdotes not just Band & album. This is subjective opinions, the choices have 4 albums I'd choose too
The most sold DM album ever, is Morbid Angel : Covenant. They chose Metallica producer 'Flemming Rasmussen', but instead of 'Blessed are the Sick, part II, it was a dark album, Azagthoth's guitar has the special sound using Fazer pedal on the entire LP.
Carcass has something for everyone. I cant stand heartwork. Symphonies of sickness is a classic that's my fave .I like Reek but I think Symphonies was reek proper.with its production. I was really pissed when they didnt play their old stuff on the heart work tour
Super happy the audio issues are fixed on this channel. These last few weeks live have been a treat!
Thanks man. So are we! Must be the blood sacrifices.....
I would love to see a video on other extreme metal labels like: Relapse, Nuclear Blast, Metal Blade, and Roadrunner. All greats labels with awesome bands, especially Roadrunner for all of the old school death metal/thrash albums they released.

one of the 'key' records ever. surprised that show's hosts never heard of it. it was quite a big hit in eastern europe in early 90s. it's actually very interesting how for the fuck sake metal gurus from north america this record is a blank space. wtf?

REDSIN1000 They even show their logo in the beginning...

But given that, at least they had the openness to include them on the board.
And maybe turn on hundreds (or thousands) who haven’t had them in their radar until now. Sam’s so cool.
This channel just keeps on giving such quality content. Another amazing show. I can see one for metal blade records coming as well!
Relapse Records too maybe haha
There needs to be a documentary on Earache, that label brought extreme metal/music to a wider audience and a lot bands wouldn't have a legendary status if wasn't for that label.
there's going to be a book this year
Necroticism " by Carcass has to be. Heavy, melodic ,fast , groovy. All in there. And actual catchy riffs and songs. X.
No Lawnmower Deth? Cmon, guys. I'm disappointed.
^ This.
it's ok, Sumo Rabbit will be hunting them all down.
Caesarino Zeppeli I agree.... needed some Lawnmower! And sadly no Fudge Tunnel and Confessor. 😔
I still have a Grindcrusher longsleeve, faded and full of holes :)
You guys nearly took off Sleep. I'm going to have to start tuning in live haha.
Carcass and Entombed. That is all.
never trust a person who doesn't like Morbid Angel, he might stabb you in the back.
i dont really like mb......
@@shanek8603 no one has ever said they don't like Morbid Angel . Death Metal rules Grimdcore sucks
The Berzerker - Dissimulate. Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium.

Sadly ended up missing the first half of the episode, but you people obviously did well without me. Really like what this list ended up as. Really well-balanced list in terms of genres, showing the wide impact Earache had and still continues to have on metal as a whole.

What do you think about Earache’s becoming a major straight forward rock or even Americana label of late?
I remember listening to Fudge Tunnel's Teeth ep in high school...Shit for Brains.
Nocturnus. Original Morbid Angel drummer/singer.
James Wray Mike Browning
Very nice guy. He's reformed the band under the name Nocturnus AD. And are working on a new album, continuing where "The Key" left off.
Vektor, that's all, Vektor
What’s your Vektor Victor?
Yea Vektor is at the top of the thrash foodchain by a loooot. Great video guys Sam Dunn I just wanna say your a top bloke loved your documentaries metal a headbangers journey and global metal very interesting it's great you include some of the obscure bands as well as the legends my top 15 is in no particular order
1 Carcass Heartwork - Absolute masterpiece they mixed grindcore, death metal and melody all together such a perfect mix love the guitar work too quality solos.

I really wish MW the art of partying wasn't taken off. Definitely essential imo

I learned from the band's thank you list and no other influences and making my mind up at the store was insanely tuff to decide.
I am really surprised they never heard "The Key", the song Neolithic turns me on.
Props for including Cult of Luna and Bolt Thrower though
The Grind Crusher was a great compilation, a great way to get into some heavy freakin' bands!!
Hate Songs in E Minor by Fudge Tunnel and Streetcleaner from Godflesh.
What about a Noise Records debate?
How would Sam not know who Nocturnus? Seriously?
I don't... & Sam's familiar with 20x the bands I know.
He's a noob.
i want to say very good presence by Mr. dekay, you enjoy talking about music we can tell easily, keep up guys and awesome video as always ;)
Dekay is the man!
Confessor & Old Lady Drivers... if not mentioned damn well should be.
Fuck yeah Danny's back! You two are the power duo
they need to do a debate about best compilations! my vote 'this comp kills fascis: Vol 2'
Vol 1 though has the better artwork.
Holy Crap, Sleep's Holy Mountain was almost left off! Board disaster avoided. :D
Sam, thank you for mentioning Dan Seagrave. Truly a master of the macabre.
Winds of Creation really needed to be up there
agree 👍
Brilliant album!
That’s another album that is so hard to find now a days
I discovered Nocturnus' "The Key" because of this archived episode! Great fucking album!!!
Dig from Earache ripped off every band he ever signed, didn't even pay Jeff from Carcass for drawing the Earache logo.
Pretty piss poor aye
Carcass Heartwork, THE essential!
I just love every episode with Daniel. Love the way he describe every band and album with passion! (of course Sam as well)
carcass - necroticism
entombed - left hand path
morbid angel - blessed are the cheesemakers
cathedral - forest of equilibrium
Carcass - Necroticism
Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium
Bolt Thrower - Warmaster
Entombed - Wolverine Blues
Wow sam I'm surprised you didnt know about Nocturus?
Glad to see Bolt-Thrower up there!! Interesting, Symbolic and The Sound of Perseverance are my favorite Death records haha
Janus Stark - Great Adventure Cigar
i hope you guys managed to listen to nocturnus 'the key'
Hey guys love this video maybe do some other videos about record labels what I'd really like to hear about is Relapse Records
Nocturnus' "The Key" is a masterpiece, along with their other 2 albums (and debut EP) IMO. Surprised none of them knew about the band but that's cool, there are just too many bands to know them all.
I'm 43 and I don't like streaming music and I never heard The Key but have been trying to get a copy
Browning was in Morbid Angel in the very early years
I still have Morbid Angel Alters Of Madness on cassette tape and it still plays good but at that time there had never been a music mixed with so many elements that had such incredible clarity. While I loved when David's vocals got even heavier a little later on, the music on this record is second to none!
Scum wasn't the first release... Mosh 001 was the Accused. A quick google search would see that. Scum was Mosh 003
I thought that it was the Heresy/Concrete Sox split? Oh, well. All great stuff.
That was number 2
www.earache.com/catalogue/
Ah. Well, it's been a while. LOL
Nate Johnson how did they not know this??
@Banger Are you planning an Atmoblack show any time soon? A relatively newer genre for sure but rather big for more recent metal history. I'd totally take a day off work to be able to participate!
Not on our radar yet, but we are open to suggestions. What bands would you put in there?
BANGER @Banger
Well, you could handle it two ways.
Should try this for other record labels. It would be pretty interesting to see.
Essential albums on Relapse Records? Make it happen.
Nihility by decapitated... and btw what happened to that album I can’t find it anywhere
N.O.C.T.U.R.N.U.S.!!! >The Key< is KILLAAA!!!
I think it would be awesome if you reviewed Nocturnus The Key
I need that Lich King shirt!
so, did you boys check out "The Key"? verdict??
Not even a mention of Berzerker? Poor Sam, even after he counted to 12 instead of subtracting 3 from 15, he has to count up to 13 twice instead of subtracting 2 from 15. 57:20, 58:45. Hate Eternal - I Monarch..... a gem for early 2000s for earache
Jack Jackson yeah 2004 amazing record.
I guess it's too early for Terminal Redux but 20 years from now that will be a legend.
When was Annihilator signed to Earache?
What about a Post-Metal essential albums? Great episode on the band debate.

Yes that one too
ND’s Scum was not MOSH001. Get your facts straight before you start (I know I’m 3 years late😂)
How is Vader not on here? Personally I feel like the Ultimate Incantation is a must.
Love my some Vader!
I might be the only person who knew about Earache as a youngin' (I'm talking like 8, or so), so I don't think I deserve any flak for calling them EAR-RASH records until my early teens when I had, "wait a minute," moment after looking at the logo properly. You're free to disagree, but it's the sun of my musical universe... Heartwork was Carcass trying to be Judas Priest, & overachieving it!
Earache released some really great music. But their merch is atrocious. Worst print-quality I've ever seen.
Really? My Godflesh shirt looks just fine, but all I've really gotten from Earache was a GF shirt and patch.

No mention of Gama Bomb?
scubavader They are great, but not essential, especially compared to those who made the top 15.
Not having a Decapitated album on there is like if you did a Nuclear Blast essentials without having a Meshuggah album.
Heartwork by far is the best!!!
I haven't watched this yet but CATHEDRAL better be on here!!
no berzerker??????
I dont get ANY news, that I didnt know.

Yo can you give a shoutout to Cairo, Egypt? The metalheads here are Sick \m/
BOLT THROWER!!!!!!

I love how the statement at 58:15 on municipal waste physically hurts Daniel at 58:24.
What, don't like Altars of Madness?I highly recommend Altars of Madness cd/dvd 89 live show
Altars of Madness has to be top ten
