this was the first cat power song I heard. It was on the what's up matador compilation, and after a few listens, I had to get What Would the Community Think. She's incredible!
I love introverted Chan, I mean I'm very glad she's sober/not suicidal anymore, but the things she created while she was in her 'mess' stage were so amazing.
I am 40 years old and have seen and heart a lot of music in my time BUT i have to say this is one of the best female performances EVER... fantastic song and a stunningly beautiful woman
Bought this on a whim at the record store the other day...heard her newer stuff and enjoyed it, but this particular song/album is hauntingly beautiful...Phenomenal to be exact....always playing in my head....BIG XoXo ;)
The show is called "Nulle Part Ailleurs", from the TV channel Canal Plus. It used to feature an artist a day, taken from pretty much all musical styles. I'm sure you must have seen many "Live at Nulle Part Ailleurs" mp3s from various artists around...
its probably one of the saddest songs I have ever heard. I absolutely love this performance but it must have taken a lot out of her to relive this again in front of so many people
Thank you ever so much for posting this. Favorite Cat Power Song of alot of great songs. reminds me of many great early perfomances I got to see in NYC. She was so young, raw and talented, still is just a little more grown up and polished now....but still a fucking amazing talent and presence
I still have a flame gun For the cute cute cute ones And I saw your hand With a loose grip On a tight ship I still have a flame gun For the cute ones To burn out all your tricks And I saw your hand With a loose grip On a very tight ship And I know That in the cold light There's a very big man There's a very big man Leading us into Temptation Jackson, Jesse, I've got a son in me Jackson, Jesse, I've got a son in me And he's related to you He's related to you He is waiting to meet you He's related to you He's related to you He is dying to meet you Backhand, role reversal Where is someone Backhand, reversible roles I know there's someone I still have a flame gun For the cute ones To burn out all your tricks And I saw your hand With a loose grip On such a tight ship And I know that in the cold light Is a very big man Leading us into Temptation Jackson, Jesse, I've got a son in me Jackson, Jesse, I've got the son in me And he's related to you He's related to you He is waiting to meet you He's related to you He's related to you He is dying to meet you He's related to you, he's related to you He's related to you, he's nude as the news Nude as the news, nude as the news, nude as the news All over, all over, all over, all over, all over, all over, all over you
I assume the guitarist is Tim Foljahn, since Steve Shelley is behind the drums. His face is not clear to me because of the lighting alas. BTW, my understanding is the reason she's using the borrowed Flying V is because her beloved SIlvertone was held up in Customs. I think Chan was 23 or 24 when this video was made. And *way* out of her comfort zone...
if you question, it was on french tv show called "Nulle Part Ailleurs" (NPA) on late 90's probably 96 or 97 in the same show, once, i saw alison david with red snapper (my second smash !)
I'd have to add to that a couple that are slightly more "upbeat", but every bit as raw: Naked if I Want To, Rockets, and actually, one of her newer covers: Breathless. Sure, we're all glad she's happier (and actually finishing shows) these days, but the musical landscape is seriously missing the blunt rawness she showed in her earlier recordings. I wish I could find that somewhere else, but two of my favorite artists (Modest Mouse, and Cat Power) have lost it in their music.
thank to you. in this late 90's, i think we, french people can listen good music, because of "Bernard Lenoir" on the radio "France Inter" (and his "Black session"). Some groups had their best success in france like BlondeRedhead...
No it's not, she's said already that it has to do with her abortion. Jackson and Jesse are Patti Smith's kids. Jesse Jackson's kid and the whole scandal happened after she wrote the song.
Some music is art. Some music is medicine for the artist. Some are both. This is very much the both. She, also, happens to be beautiful at the same time.
yea she does...but the way she sings now is much more breathy.....shes changed quite a bit....sings more calmly, longer hair, doesn't have as much depression, obviously shes older, but she still looks really really young for her age, shes a really interesting person
It's from a french TV appearance(not sure what the show is) and I'm guessing it would have been from soon after the release of what would the community think, so around 1996.
hmmm, im feeling sad, to know, that ife missed 10 years of good music experience since yesterday, i try to listen to every song she ever made each one is touching my hard, sometimes so badly, that holding of my tears is hard work
Ya, I know what you mean, I'm going to see her in a few weeks in sydney, i'll try and get a bit of the concert on my phone, but yeh the introverted chan was something awesome.
That's probably because she was high on something. I think that both 'periods' of her life are great in regards to her performing. I'm glad the she's sober. The latest cover album 'Jukebox' is brilliant.
Her voice penetrates like no man ever could
this was the first cat power song I heard. It was on the what's up matador compilation, and after a few listens, I had to get What Would the Community Think. She's incredible!
Same for me!
Same. It was on the Matador video collection. It’s one of my favorite videos
I've got this song stuck in my head and let me tell you, it feels great
+jock it's tatooed on my brain
I love introverted Chan, I mean I'm very glad she's sober/not suicidal anymore, but the things she created while she was in her 'mess' stage were so amazing.
I absolutely love this song. Gives me chills every time I hear it.
i was just getting the chills and saw your comment!
I honestly think I've watched it 100 times.
Such a raw performance, they don't do like this anymore. I like how her eyes are like closed and she looks sad. Makes you feel what she is singing.
She makes great music for listening to by yourself.
I am 40 years old and have seen and heart a lot of music in my time BUT i have to say this is one of the best female performances EVER... fantastic song and a stunningly beautiful woman
La première fois que je la vis, je crois... Exceptionnelle de classe, authenticité, talent... Une chanson envoûtante!
So much raw emotion, beautiful. She is so talented.
Bought this on a whim at the record store the other day...heard her newer stuff and enjoyed it, but this particular song/album is hauntingly beautiful...Phenomenal to be exact....always playing in my head....BIG XoXo ;)

There a few songs that have really stuck with me throughout the years. This is definitely one of them.
Great song, nice performance with the sonic youth drummer.
it melts my heart, ever since the first time i heard this song. stunning performance, really!
Such a brave and haunting piece. This performance just cuts right to your heart in an unexpected way.
a decade plus before England Daughter!!!!
Yes, Steve Shelley on drums. My fav song from this lovely creature, Chan.
This is the hell of a song, haunts me since 1997...
Christ is she beautiful, her voice chills my bone marrow.
This is the best versions of one of the greatest songs ever.
Everytime she sings I shiver. Metal Heart is my favorite, but my god...this is brilliant!!!
Cat Power is awesome...I love her voice...I wish I could see her live.
its probably one of the saddest songs I have ever heard. I absolutely love this performance but it must have taken a lot out of her to relive this again in front of so many people
It's so haunting.
Sorry for responding to a 15-year-old comment but what’s sad about this song? and is it somehow autobiographical?
@@slacktoryrecords4193 I think it's about an abortion she underwent, she's spoken in interviews some time later about it.
she is still so gorgeous i dont care how old she is see i saw her live she is radiant
One of my favourite songs ever
Who knew Jesse Jackson’s illegitimate child would produce such a great song.
Unbelievably gorgeous and haunting.
I love that she is rocking the flying V..so fucking tough!
jeeezzz this song ...blow my mind away
No bassist....wow, amazing. Love Cat Power and this song
Best live performance in history. This is just perfect.
I love this song I wish she could sing this one again!
Jacksooonn!! Jessieee!!
She's amazingly beautiful. She looks like Kurt Cobain as a girl in this performance, so moving.
Yeah, I downloaded it a while back but lost it afterwards. Don't know how it can be better than on the album, but it really is.
Thank you ever so much for posting this. Favorite Cat Power Song of alot of great songs.
reminds me of many great early perfomances I got to see in NYC. She was so young, raw and talented, still is just a little more grown up and polished now....but still a fucking amazing talent and presence
This is a very nice live performance. She's got a great voice on this one.
THANK YOU for posting this... the best performance I've ever heard ! AMAZING, MIND BLOWING !
so calm and so powerfull. I remenber watching her on live when i was a teenager, I miss this TV show. Vive "nul par ailleurs !" ;)
Yep, this is so much better than the album version.
i just cannot get enough of this either
unquestionably magnificent !!!
my favorite cat power song! all the better seeing this live version!
It is Tim Foljahn of Two Dollar Guitar on guitar and Steve Shelley on drums.
this live is amazing
I love this version of the song...thanks for posting it.
What a powerful performance! Just pure, real, raw. What is it? It is music that makes u feel! Amazing.
no shite..it's about time this video re-appeared.. my fav Cat Power performance ever
thanks for this! i love this song. to bad she didnt perform that much
oh man, i'm so happy to see this back on youtube AND a link to the video. thank you
Merci d'avoir reposté cette vidéo !
Great performance ! Love u Chan !
I still have a flame gun
For the cute cute cute ones
And I saw your hand
With a loose grip
On a tight ship
I still have a flame gun
For the cute ones
To burn out all your tricks
And I saw your hand
With a loose grip
On a very tight ship
And I know
That in the cold light
There's a very big man
There's a very big man
Leading us into
Temptation
Jackson, Jesse, I've got a son in me
Jackson, Jesse, I've got a son in me
And he's related to you
He's related to you
He is waiting to meet you
He's related to you
He's related to you
He is dying to meet you
Backhand, role reversal
Where is someone
Backhand, reversible roles
I know there's someone
I still have a flame gun
For the cute ones
To burn out all your tricks
And I saw your hand
With a loose grip
On such a tight ship
And I know that in the cold light
Is a very big man
Leading us into
Temptation
Jackson, Jesse, I've got a son in me
Jackson, Jesse, I've got the son in me
And he's related to you
He's related to you
He is waiting to meet you
He's related to you
He's related to you
He is dying to meet you
He's related to you, he's related to you
He's related to you, he's nude as the news
Nude as the news, nude as the news, nude as the news
All over, all over, all over, all over, all over, all over, all over you
Uno de los mejores temas de Chan, qué buen video!!
The line "he is dying to meet you " is dark... considering the context of the song. It makes my heart ache.
I assume the guitarist is Tim Foljahn, since Steve Shelley is behind the drums. His face is not clear to me because of the lighting alas. BTW, my understanding is the reason she's using the borrowed Flying V is because her beloved SIlvertone was held up in Customs.

probably 96 or 97
in the same show, once, i saw alison david with red snapper (my second smash !)
achingly beautiful.
Perfectly grateful to you for bringing this back
Still the best Cat Power song.
I'd have to add to that a couple that are slightly more "upbeat", but every bit as raw: Naked if I Want To, Rockets, and actually, one of her newer covers: Breathless. Beautiful song, excellent performance.
Is that SY's Steve Shelley on drums? Great. :)
thank to you.

love this!!!!love cat power!!!!!
maybe 300 times! Especially when drunk... much love
SOSOSOSOOOO BEAUTIFUUUUUULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
incredible, i miss the early days of mrs. marshall
thanks so much- it killed me when this was taken down originally.
she sounds amazing and looks so cute! :D
october 1996
i'll be seeing her in sydney too! even though the cover isn't so great i can't wait to see metal heart! i thought that day would never come
No it's not, she's said already that it has to do with her abortion. Jackson and Jesse are Patti Smith's kids. Jesse Jackson's kid and the whole scandal happened after she wrote the song.
Thank you Chan
Some music is art. Some music is medicine for the artist. Some are both. This is very much the both. She, also, happens to be beautiful at the same time.
Her voice is Jesus! Especially at 1:18.
Cuts deep like a bastard but in a high redemptive way, beautiful emotional gloom.
Uno de los mejores temas !!

sounds like PJ Harvey...and that's a compliment!
Atemberaubend, umwerfend, leidenschaftlich...
hmmm, im feeling sad, to know, that ife missed 10 years of good music experience
since yesterday, i try to listen to every song she ever made
each one is touching my hard, sometimes so badly, that holding of my tears is hard work
sometimes i prefer her voice from back then that recent times, especially her voice post-2005
She IS the hottest woman I have ever laid eyes on.
Ya, I know what you mean, I'm going to see her in a few weeks in sydney, i'll try and get a bit of the concert on my phone, but yeh the introverted chan was something awesome.
i love this song!:)
i agree with you music is the only thing worthwhile
Yea I love how she looks here
That's probably because she was high on something. I think that both 'periods' of her life are great in regards to her performing. I'm glad the she's sober. The latest cover album 'Jukebox' is brilliant.
it was from 1996 or 97
she was in her early twenties
Yes that is Steve Shelly from Sonic youth
It's f*ing amazing...
is that Steve Shelley on drums? this song is great, never heard it live... Chan is the best
@bohemianrye
kudos for use of the word 'dingbat'!
very beautiful!
sheer perfection.
oh my, poor little chan, here she looks more damaged than ever
the best tune
Thanks for the info!
outstanding.
