This song was a highlight at concerts! You all performed it so well night after night. And I would get tears during the “We Were Here” part at the end. Thanks so much! ❤️❤️
Check out Therion too if you like Symphonic Metal. Just as sublime and sensational as Nightwish. You may also appreciate the Folk Metal, Neo-Medieval, and Melodic Death Metal genres.
I'm 72 and in total agreement. I likewise grew up with the Beatles, Stones and Led Zeppelin but also Stravinsky et al. This was an amazing performance and wish I could have been there.
The visuals at the "We were here!" finale always get me. Thank you, Nightwish, for reminding us of our humanity, our better and cosmic natures, and giving us words to dream by and live by.
In the grand scale of things, the gist of this composition, we are nothing but that. Footnotes to future generations. Or alien civilizations finding out a monke with big brain actually managed to off themselves. No matter what, we will eventually fade out on this Earth. The big question is will we continue on as a species through raping other heavenly bodies. But "Life" as we humans consider it, WILL end billions of years before Sol revokes its contract.
I'm 63 now. Grew up with Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Renaissance and other Hardrock or Artrock stuff. And discovered Nightwish last year. It' a great performance!
When I listen to that part I always think of how brief the life is. I start to make a comparison between our ancestors and us, and they were also here, as we are. They just vanished, evolved and here we are trying to evolve into a better society, and maybe not too far into the future we will be the ones who were here, and undoubtedly will be part of the history and will become "ancestors" for other "people" or begins. That part of the song always makes my body shake and make me realise that we are just stardust. Once we were, now we are no more.
@@camilomaldonadopinzon6847 And each and every one of us with hopes and dreams and fears lived their lives and died. Imagine 117 BILLION people that all were born and died before us. We think we are so amazing as homo sapiens, but just like you said; we're all just stardust!
I get emotional every time I hear the "We were here" part. This song really helps you remember how small you are compared to the universe and the things that came before and the things that will come after. It reminds us there's going to be time when humans don't exist anymore or that we'll one day be considered an ancient civilization ourselves. Beautiful! I've listened to this song so many times, I've lost count and I know I'll keep coming back to listen again!
He HAS to smile, he has the best job on earth - and he has a pinchable-cheek face, he's just damned cute (and I say that as a straight guy - the dude looks huggable).
@@TheReverendRobDiesel lol yes, I saw them live and Emppu was smiling and being cute the whole time. He also threw a guitar pick right at my face and I keep it in a special place haha. What a great experience seeing Nightwish live is!
I must have listened to this a thousand times, and yes, still also get goose bumps! I sit and listen in awe, and cannot wait to see this live. Beautiful from start to finish - phenomenal!
14:16 - 14:47 The Evolution of Music This has to be my favorite part of the song because it's so subtle that you might not catch it the first time around, but it's arguably the most brilliant part of the song in terms of storytelling. Within about 30 seconds, you can hear a beautiful representation of musical history. It begins with a harpsichord playing Bach's Minuet in G, followed by the voices of Chrismas Carolers singing a snippet that's reminiscent of Carol of the Bells to represent the Classical Music of the 18-1900s; it then moves to mid-20th century american Country Music with a short snippet of a banjo diddy ; the early 21st century follows afterwards with a riff from Metallica's "Enter Sandman" to represent the Golden Age of Classic Metal; it then ends with the drumkit briefly switching from acoustic to digital as it plays an EDM style beat to represent Club Music and the modern era. This is not a part of the song I see people talk about often and I think it definitely deserves more praise because it's absolutely genius.
Actually it starts before 14:16, exactly at 13:47.. it starts with tribal rythms and singings (probably they want to evoke the ancient music), then it lasts with a kind of Gregorian chants and afterwards those that you mentioned!!! In total is exactly 1 minute!
I really would love to see someone do a breakdown specifically on this part of the song. I think I'm missing stuff, and I'd love to have someone point it out. I certainly don't find all the things mentioned by Claire there.
She's a Goddess Valkyrie with a superior powerful voice, full of extreme feelings. Love you all Nigthwish, you are the best artist of music and deep feelings ever..... U're the only one that can make me cry while I sing with you.....🤘🥰😘
Anyone who thinks that a scientific worldview is cold, emotionless, and spiritually unsatisfying needs to hear this song. One of the most beautiful and moving things I've ever heard.
@@jedicouncil66 If you see it as despair, you are missing the point of the song. It's about joy and wonder. It literally calls us humans "the lucky ones".

Man, this song is definitely a masterpiece, I can't stop listening it, again and again. I saw you on live for the 1st time 2 weeks ago in Paris, and I'll never forget it. Please never stop... Being!
It's not her voice alone its the way she uses it. The various low and high notes she can reach and in different styles and even different languages. Simone Simons, Sharon Den Adel and Amy lee are awesome too for example BUT with no disrespect to them...Floor is the most flexible of them all and she can perfect any style she gets into...from operatic to heavy metal to hard rock to pop to jazzy-ish to growling...she has it all and she's worked damn hard to achieve it. her pairing with Nightwish is just marvelous because it introduced a lot of people to the band and genre and all the side projects that the band members had and have. Floor Jansen and Nightwish are for us today what Freddie Mercury and Queen were back in the day. Oh and no disrespect to Tarja(which I've only this year managed to see live and she magnificent as expected) or Anette(still waiting to catch her live). I like them too and we wouldn't be here to talk about any of this if not for their contributions as well
@@vlad-ovidiuadam6489 dude, your comment is pure and condensed truth, from the first to the last word. Also note that I've been listening to metal music (not the heavy one or a more instrumental one, but mostly to power metal, gothic and symphonic metal) for over 10 years, with the first group I listened to being Evanescence (whose frontwoman is the above mentioned Amy Lee), and the first actually loved to the deep being Within Temptation (not to be said, Sharon's band), so I totally get your comparison, and I can compare them as well with my musical tastes and history. They all have a wonderful voice, however it's not the bare voice which lets you understand the power of these bands, but the way they decide to use them. Just think of Whole World is Watching from WT, of Bring Me to Life from Evanescence: they are well known songs, but they are the ones which let you appreciate the frontwomen's voice the most, since they are literally able to crack your heart.
Am I the only one who starts getting all emotional with the concept of the song?? How can other bands ever compete with what Nightwish have turned into? This is philosophy, storytelling, poetry, science if you will...This is all what metal could be to me.
Вот сей час я увидел знакомые мне лица. Я переживаю, чтобы вы не распались. @Johnny Finn Nightwish will, one day, be hailed as the reason for the success of symphonic rock. If you haven't done it yet and want to sob uncontrollably, watch the movie "Imaginaerum." After dozens of viewings, I still choke up multiple times. If I had a "Make A Wish" opportunity, it would be to hang out with Emppu for a couple of hours... he seems SO happy making others happy that he holds a special place in my set of beloved musicians... maybe even the top one. 😀
I'm left completely speechless...never was there a more wholesome band than Nightwish...I lose myself into its universe, tales and ink stained pages...every song, every concept and concert is simply a magnificent work of art. They'll forever be in my ❤
you said what I feel for this band for years now but never been able to put into words.. thank you so much Nightwish and their music will be in my heart forever🤍
Couldn't agree more, every song is so diverse that you never know what to expect unless of course you are familiar with their music and you hit the nail on the head when you said there was never a more wholesome band and there probably never will be in our lifetime, especially with that contrived manufactured rubbish they call music nowadays. Great comment keep spreading the word and Nightwish will keep going.
Every time the ending happens, "we were here" I just get so overwhelmed with emotion and I sob. I don't know why. I can't help it. This song just really hits me
It should be emotional. "We Were Here" is a celebratory chant saying we existed, we won the lottery of birth and lived, overshadowed by the inevitable end.
It hits me every time as well. To me there is so much anguish, and yet a hint of defiance in that final cry. Humankind's unified voice shouting out to the uncaring and empty vastness of the Universe that "We Existed". The loneliness of being the only known sentient species, mixed with the resolve that even if there are no other eyes and ears out there (and I dearly hope there are) to witness our existence and eventual passing; the Universe created something worthy of note. It warms my heart to know that I'm not the only one who feels this way about that ending and so I thank you and wish you all the best. :)
Nightwish are now next level magical, beautiful, wonderful...... Tuomas- we are Indeed privileged to have lived while this man shared his musical genius.
"Ghost Love Score" was the love at first sight as when we heard Nightwish first time and loved them. "The Poet and The Pendulum" was the mourning for the old times of Nightwish and calling for the new dark adventures "The Greatest Show on Earth" was the great announcement of the epic era is about to come as Nightwish has finally established their best line-up! Now it is the time for "All the Works of Nature Which Adorn the World"
The best line-up so far. Most of us already made the assumption that they have reached their best line-up before and were proven wrong. I don't know if it is possible to get even better. But Nightwish is always full of surprises.
The entire album is Nightwish's masterpiece so far. And Floor's voice is so rich and colorful interpreting the lyrics, it touches something deep inside of me. :)
When people say music can heal the soul, for me, this is what they're talking about. This song removes so much negativity, anxiety, and existential fear from my ego that all I'm left with is appreciation and tears for the message and feeling left behind. I've not been moved by music like this in two decades.
Nightwish - their music is unapologetically artistic, they write and sing whatever they want and it's always epic in the truest sense of the word. No conforming to trends, just making music to the tune of their souls.
Nightwish - I’d argue - is keeping so many people sane, positive, and uplifted during this unprecedented time of uncertainty and fear. Thank you for it.
" unprecedented time of uncertainty and fear." Maybe open a history book some day. It's hard to find times in history where we've had it better than we do now.
About a year ago I "rediscovered" Nightwish after watching a random video here on YT. Haven't listened to Nightwish for like 10 years before that. I think the song was The poet and the pendulum, (didn't even know they had their third singer, after Anette) and since then I've listened/watched Nightwish songs almost daily. If that random video haven't been Nightwish, I might never have found out about Floor Jansen, for me the greatest singer there is. I might never have found my way back to Nightwish, for me the greatest band there is, and listened to songs like Poet..., Ghost love score, Storytime, Tribal...too many to write here. Thank you Nightwish, for making the best music I've ever listened to.
I feel you. I used to love Nightwish untill Annette came along. I stopped listening to Nightwish completely. Then one day I heard Floor on our national show Beste Zangers, saying she was now the voice of Nightwish. I've always been a big fan of her, loved After Forever, so I just had to check out her performances with Nightwish and damn I am SO glad I did. I absolutely LOVE Nightwish again! In my opinion they are better than they've ever been, even though I really liked them with Tarya too. Floor is just out of this world and Troy is such a great addition. So sad Jukka had to quit though, but this drummer is very good too, they are all just amazing!
Back in 2008 a co-worker introduced me to Nightwish. Wish I Had An Angel was the first song of theirs I heard (he had a copy of Once) and I immediately went out to buy it, only to find that the store I went to didn't have a copy of that, but they did have Dark Passion Play. As soon as The Poet and the Pendulum started playing, I thought, "that's not the same singer..." That song still hooked me though, the musicianship far exceeded anything I was exposed to at the time. I started looking more into the band, and found that Tarja had left. I liked Anette fine, never had a problem with her style, but as I went deeper down the rabbit hole I got more into the older songs, and I also discovered After Forever, specifically Dreamflight, and Floor's range blew me away. So when I found out she was going to be the singer for Nightwish, I was beyond excited. Seen them twice, both times with Floor, and those were two of the best shows I've ever been to. Waiting for show number 3, whenever that is...

That moment when all those pictures pass by of random people and everyone screams 'WE WERE HERE!'always brings a tear to my eyes. Probably my favourite Nightwish song of all.
It happens exactly the same. A few months ago I discovered this band (I had listened to individual songs without paying much attention) and I am fascinated. "The Greatest Show on Earth" is definately one of the most deeply emotional Nightwish's songs Tuomas has ever written, it is simply impossible not to cry with the history of us all while listening this absolute Nightwish magnum opus and to have Dawkins in the end, it's hard to not burst into tears, for it is simply the tale of our history here on this magnificent planet. Tuomas is a master of music. After going thru a solid dark time with the poet and the pendulum. He wrote a song to make us realise that its a chance to be alive. And simply living is the greatest show on earth.
17:29 Those young women in the audience, quite carried away with emotion, one of them reciting Richard Dawkins' speech along with him; that's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. If science and music together can still move people like that, maybe humanity has a chance after all.
The opportunity that everyone is looking for has existed for years and initially consists of self-reflection and after that taking knowledge about how the mechanisms work, all of which are based on lies and deceit and therefore will never end, until everyone knows what exactly from oneself about blackest word magic, which is much more subtle than many might believe is made. Really don't get it but trying to understand what I'm missing here.
@@123Suffering456 Have you tried listening to it while your reading the lyrics? Maybe being able to follow along would help? It's about the creation of our universe and planet eart. That's why chapter 1 is called Four Point Six. I guess I see it as a 20-21 minute rock opera dedicated to the creation of the planet. The first part I can see the creation of the stars and galaxies in my head....sort of like the music is painting it into existence. Part 2 "Life" is talking about life starting on our planet, single microbes up to humans (which is Part 3, Toolmaker). I adore part 3 now, but I will admit the animalistic growls the first time through really made me chuckle. I was like "Wait, run that by me again?" Part 4 has got to be my favourite though, once they start in with the “We Were Here” portion of the song I can’t listen with out getting teary eyed - from happiness. It’s a nice life reminder when your having a stressful day. Puts things in perspective.
This is surely one of the wildest show, which the band Nightwish had. It still brings back great memories of this show, even though I wasn't there in person, every time I rewatch this video I get chills all over my body.

I've discovered Nightwish last Saturday and I'm in shock from then (with Ghost Love Score at Buenos Aires). A truly excellent band and.... what a voice!. Sometimes, I wish that all the crownd and the band stays in silence so I can hear Floor sing like a goodness. I don't have enough words to describe my first encounter with Floor's voice. From then, I suffer the Stendhal's syndrome. What can I do, doctor?
This is one of the finest songs ever written! And here, one of the very best interpretations too: Floor’s singing is pristine. Troy is a monster playing all these instruments too. Frigging Unbelievable!
One of the most dramatic and inspiring songs I've ever heard. I never cease to enjoy this, listening over and over. In all aspects, the combined efforts of Nightwish are just remarkable. Thank you all.
This is the most awe inspiring song ever, the writing, composition, playing, singing and meaning behind the song. I missed this gig in London in December 2015 as my father was admitted to hospital my mum became ill shortly after. It became a kind of anthem for me as I nursed them both through rapidly debilitating illnesses. My dad passed away on March 1st 2016 and my mum 3 weeks later on March 22nd. My heart and spirit broke but I listened to this song on repeat and I understood how very lucky I was to have such wonderful parents who taught me, my brother, my kids and grandkids so much. Their brief time on earth has left a positive lasting mark thru their genes, their deeds and their teachings. I miss them so much each and every day but know when my brief time is over that I will go back where it all started and be one with them again. You have no idea how much this song has influenced my heart and way of thinking 🤗💕🤗💕🤘 Thank you all and to Richard Dawkins whos teachings inspired this song and album xxx
Dear Freya, l’ll hope for your mum and dad they believed (confessed to) in God before they died. It’s the only possible way for you to meet them again. Not via the teachings of Dawkins, because he is an athëist, not even a thrustworthy scientist.
Dear Freya, to start to begin with, I'm so sorry for your loss! I know what it feels like letting one of your parents go; I too felt it! Your parents would have been proud of you because of your care and dedication! You can be very proud of them!
Well, I rarely listen to so-called symphonic metal. But this... this is extraordinary. What a show-off of talent, musicianship, energy and pure joy this is ! What a fantastic show it must have been ! I'm totally blown off !!
Previously my favorite longest track was Ghost Love Score, but damn, this blows it out of the water! This song definetly is the ultimate Nightwish song.
Year after year i listen to this song with my students as an excercise (Im a biology teacher) and year after year i witness the birth of some Nightwish little fans that in a few months discuss with me their favorite albums and songs.
This song still leaves me speechless, sobbing, covered head to toe in goosebumps. After all these years. Truly the greatest song ever written, conceptualised, performed. You feel it within every inch of your soul. We were here!

It reminds us there's going to be time when humans don't exist anymore or that we'll one day be considered an ancient civilization ourselves. Beautiful! I've listened to this song so many times, I've lost count and I know I'll keep coming back to listen again!
Well Put, so true. leave this here for if we survive and they look back on us. 2024
I always love an appreciate how Emppu looks like he's just having a ball. All smiles all the time.
This song is giving me goose bumps everytime. For me personally, this is Tuomas' masterpiece.
It's up there, but "The Poet and the Pendulum" exists, so I have to politely disagree :)
And the song itself describes God’s masterpiece.
This is the ultimate rendition of Nightwish
@@Powerranger-le4up Funny thing to read on a video starring Richard Dawkins (though it makes sense from a believer point of view)
I must have listened to this a thousand times, and yes, still also get goose bumps! I sit and listen in awe, and cannot wait to see this live. Beautiful from start to finish - phenomenal!
14:16 - 14:47 The Evolution of Music
This has to be my favorite part of the song because it's so subtle that you might not catch it the first time around, but it's arguably the most brilliant part of the song in terms of storytelling.
Wow! I really never noticed this! Thanks a lot!!!
Brilliant observation I missed some of that but this was the second time listening to it now on to the third time.
My man
Floor has the most amazing voice, there are not words. She is the bar that nobody else can reach!
she sing like a dragon possessed by a demon. Definitely one of the greatest singers any band could wish for
She's a Goddess Valkyrie with a superior powerful voice, full of extreme feelings.
A cool song does not change the message of despair. The universe was created, as were we.
@@jedicouncil66 If you see it as despair, you are missing the point of the song. It's about joy and wonder. It literally calls us humans "the lucky ones".
"When I was little, I was fascinated by stars. I thought they were magic. I kept coming up with all these crazy theories about how they worked. I wanted to believe in magic. [...] When I grew up and learned the real explanation for the stars, they became even more amazing." - certified cynical dickhead Colonel Janus
@@jedicouncil66what despair? The despair is only found in the preaching of people so arrogant to the point of claiming "I know what god think".
It is a good song, but religion does help with it. It’s because of God that I love learning about the world.
Man, this song is definitely a masterpiece, I can't stop listening it, again and again. I saw you on live for the 1st time 2 weeks ago in Paris, and I'll never forget it. Please never stop... Being!
J'étais là aussi, c'était incroyable !

What an honest and true comment. Thank you very much.
nice to meet people with similar thinking
Every time the ending happens, "we were here" I just get so overwhelmed with emotion and I sob. I don't know why. I can't help it. This song just really hits me
Annie Pollard Same ❤️
It should be emotional.
I sob hysterically every time.
Gives me the goosebumps. If the song ended there, it would easily be my favorite NW song.
Nightwish are now next level magical, beautiful, wonderful......
Tuomas- we are Indeed privileged to have lived while this man shared his musical genius.
What do you mean "now"? They have been for at least the last two decades.

I´m crying my eyes out! WOW!
"Ghost Love Score" was the love at first sight as when we heard Nightwish first time and loved them.
"The Poet and The Pendulum" was the mourning for the old times of Nightwish and calling for the new dark adventures
"The Greatest Show on Earth" was the great announcement of the epic era is about to come as Nightwish has finally established their best line-up!
Now it is the time for "All the Works of Nature Which Adorn the World"
this!
Yessss
This!! I’d just humbly add Song of myself. I think its lyrics are deep.
The best line-up so far. Most of us already made the assumption that they have reached their best line-up before and were proven wrong. I don't know if it is possible to get even better. But Nightwish is always full of surprises.
Nailed it my friend
The entire album is Nightwish's masterpiece so far. And Floor's voice is so rich and colorful interpreting the lyrics, it touches something deep inside of me. :)
When people say music can heal the soul, for me, this is what they're talking about. This song removes so much negativity, anxiety, and existential fear from my ego that all I'm left with is appreciation and tears for the message and feeling left behind. I've not been moved by music like this in two decades.
This is it EXACTLY. Thank you for putting into words what I cannot.
Nightwish - their music is unapologetically artistic, they write and sing whatever they want and it's always epic in the truest sense of the word. No conforming to trends, just making music to the tune of their souls.
One doesn’t listen to Nightwish, one experiences Nightwish

I think recently a lot of people "found" nightwish, there seems to be a recent trend especially with "reaction"-videos.

I love Richard getting a huge ovation. After such an amazing performance, for the band to honor him in that way is truly inspiring. 🥲 ❤👍
such a beautiful piece of music
I can listen to this song over and over and over again and it never gets boring. It’s a masterpiece (as are many other Nightwish songs of course)
Year after year i listen to this song with my students as an excercise (Im a biology teacher) and year after year i witness the birth of some Nightwish little fans that in a few months discuss with me their favorite albums and songs.
You are the best teacher in the world!! I would not refuse such a lesson.
shameless request: can you share your lesson plan for that particular session? love to make more Nightwish fan with better efficacy.
This song still leaves me speechless, sobbing, covered head to toe in goosebumps. After all these years. Truly the greatest song ever written, conceptualised, performed. You feel it within every inch of your soul. We were here!
Beautiful❤️❤️I LOVE NIGHTWISH🔥🔥🔥
THIS IS MORE THAN JUST A SONG IS A MASTERPIECE, A EXPERIENCE OUT OF THIS WORLD WOW
Tuomas is a genius.... and Floor is the Queen....the best ever...
Floor is beyond a queen... I'd go with either Musical Valkyrie or Goddess. =)
you're right on
It is not our Earth, our universe. It is merely our time. It is truly a glowing testament to our beautiful finity.
@Nightwish, may your song resonate long, loud and proud through the dust and fire, and into the canals of the newborn. Thank you, love and cheers!
This is the only version of this song I watch now. When she says "Please sing with us!" it always invokes a tear or two. Absolutely stunning performance!
And Just like a few others on these comments, i'm in my 60s. My cd collection just got bigger after hearing and watching Nightwish over the last few months. Thank god that l dumped the Tv and found a far better life watching U-Tube instead. Life outside might be closed down (covid ) but I'm loving every moment watching and listerning to such Great Music. Take- care Everyone ...................................
The greatest song on earth ♥

@@ChrisPage68 And beautiful too :)
Thanks for your music. Me, and my 8 y.o. daughter love the band.
Every time I hear some NW songs, my feelings blow up in a party.
Hugs from Pontevedra (Spain).
When they started showing different people, races and cultures and sang "WE WERE HERE" and Emppu was so happy... I lost it, I was crying like a baby. And then when I saw Tuomas' smile I cried even more.
9:58 Emppu enjoying the pure musical masterpiece that he and the rest of the band is creating live.
*THIS* is rock opera. Nothing like it anywhere else.
I so wish I could see them live.
I saw them for the first time in 2018. They sound perfect. Floor kick ass. She sounds very powerful.
Kamelot does similar rock operas, look up The Black Halo album
@@xxxBradTxxx he doesn't Ask name of New band.... Kaamelott lover

Me too
I cant even describe the number of ways I love this song. The band, and Floor. None of my words will ever do them justice.
