My god *sigh* these laughs existed because of Toon Moon's cheesiness, as much as I wanted a clean version I wouldn't stop myself from laughing at some of Toon Moon moments tbh
Why is everybody saying this? He clearly does have a purpose in the Toon Makers episode, his rose allows Sailor Moon to make a stronger attack! It literally gives her magical energy or something. Also, he was not that useless in the anime, he freed Sailor Moon when she was being captured several times, and he sometimes could kinda fight (although not nearly as good as in the manga).
OH MY GOD. I am a lifelong moonie and have been ever since middle school. And let me tell ya, as a fan of cheesy Japanese anime Americanizations and sailor moon I was DYING to see this pilot once I heard of it. It bothered me so much that I actually wrote part of a script fic about it during my sophomore year. Never completed it, but I still have it on my wattpad to this day. Now I just started my first year of college, and this definitely gave me a massive pick me up because of how impossible I thought it was to find and yet how badly I wanted to watch it during my late middle and high school years. On behalf of similar sailor moon fans, I’d like to thank you so much for your work in finding and making this pilot accessible. It couldn’t have been easy. I honestly thought this day wouldn’t come, but it’s fitting that my high school era ends with something like this.
You should watch PGSM Sailor Moon. It's also a live action adaptation that ran for about 40 episodes, plus a "Wedding Special" (a sort of epilogue to the series).
+@@abbycollins Why you say god instead of gosh, say oh my gosh right? And I only read/heard it few years ago, not 2 decades ago like you, luckily that was a quick wait for me, since 2020 closer.
'Oh my God' is fine. Have a word with yourself. It's their language, their turn of phrase. Mind your manners. Especially when they are being respectful to work from ours. You can find the Live easily enough these days from online JP retailers. Finding one with subtitles can be problematic and communication a chore if you're not native but there are those serving as mediators, I've worked with them in the past, they'll be able to advise you. Just a case of searching around as I've not been involved in that side of industry since first stage. Others have done it on/via Reddit. So you shouldn't have much issue. Just ask around.
One thing we all have to remember, is this is a working demo, this was a single test reel and pilot episode meant to get greenlit for the actual show, yeah the art and animation is rough, but it was made on a shoestring budget, if it had been given the go-ahead, among retools, the quality of the actual show made from this would have been better for sure.
I'm not saying you're wrong. The actual animation probably would have been given a bump up. But it still would have been pretty crappy. This is not that many steps down from the final product.
This was just a Test Promo. During the Spring of 1994, it did air as an Interstitial on Various Syndicated Affiliates. Ultimately, DiC and TOEI worked out a Deal to simply dub Sailor Moon and bring it to the States for the Fall of '94, and Saban's Concept was scrapped.
Actually, Raven doesn't think it was by Ron Wasserman. I forgot the exact reasoning, but she thinks it's by the same composing team that did the music for The DiC dub

Once again Ray Mona. Thank you for all your hard work and investigation for tracking down both the pilot and this music video. I still wonder who the name of the actress is playing Venus. She’s absolutely gorgeous.
Awesome video 👍 I still can’t believe Sabon Moon is found!! Thank you for all your hard work and dedication and good job on your western world of sailor moon documentary’s
To be fair to this westernized version, the disability representation was good to see. A girl in a wheelchair, just dressed ordinary and dancing with her friends, having fun? Even today, not a whole lot of shows want to bring in disabled characters as anything more than talking points or background stock.
Just think about this.... There is an alternate dimension where THIS was the Sailor Moon the US ended up with, and the original english dub of the anime was lost media
Anyone low-key wishing now someone picks up the rights to do a live-action Sailor Moon but using the Power Rangers format like this show was gonna try to achieve? xD I can totally see this kinda thing airing on Nickelodeon hahaha TY Ray Mona for giving us a chance to live through this lost media, it feels surreal and it rocks!!
AHHHH thank you! This has been stuck in my head all these years. Never thought I’d see anything better than the OG one. The arm dancing at 1:57 still sends me.
I showed my mom this and explained that this was almost the Sailor Moon we got. Towards the end she started thanking God and walked out continuing to thank him.
I just discover your documentary both Part-1&2 and I was really surprised this lost media of the original Americanized Sailor Moon was finally found in 2022 today that's crazy to me.
This is great seeing the intro much clearer rather than though someone's camera. When it comes to the song itself, I think you did a much better job with your cover. Also, I just want to point out that footage from the ending of E.T. was used at 0:57.
I am showing the pilot to two girls I babysit for. I recently got them into the DIC dub (yes, they’ve seen the Viz dub, too). I look forward to them seeing this version!!
Thank you for taking this clip. It has been stuck in my head since your documentary came out. 😅 As always, a huge thank you for finding this clean footage. You have done a HUGE service for the Sailor Moon fan community. Please, link your Patreon! We need to pay you for that work!
It's pretty rare to find live action, hand drawn animation, and CGI all in the same production, especially one of this age. The CGI transformation isn't even bad by early 90s standards, even without considering that this is basically ashcan.
The intro for this honestly has no right being so damn catchy, but here we are. Also, it's so nice to finally see this without the shaky footage and some guy (rightfully though) laughing throughout the entire thing.
what the heck did I just see, lol! thanks for allowing us to see what could have been... kinda glad it didn't happen cause.... wow. but still, nice to have this documented!

There’s a certain special sadness that overpowers you when you know that, being twelve at the time, you would have watched this and enjoyed it has this made it to air. It would have been 4:00 in the afternoon, you’d have been tired and hungry and longing to chuck your math workbook right in the kitchen trash and this would have been on. Honestly, if there's one way to describe the Toonmakers version of Sailor Moon, it's that it looks like a typical 80s cartoon made just to sell toys. And also, Sailor Moon in this looks like a blatant She-Ra knock-off.
Not gonna lie, for something this old, I can respect that this is the 90s nostalgia thing, but when it comes to the US trying to also make a live cartoon style of sailor Moon, makes me wanna stick to the original Japanese version, my opinion though, cause this is too cheesy for my taste
I like how Tuxedo Mask is very on character by doing nothing except popping up and providing emotional support like in the original anime

I’ve wanted this for so long! Thank you! ^__^
I wonder what chibiusa and characters like sailor Neptune Uranus, and Saturn would of looked like.
Just think about this.... There is an alternate dimension where THIS was the Sailor Moon the US ended up with, and the original english dub of the anime was lost media
that's a terrifying idea
Holy cow, I'm still in awe you actually found it!! Amazing!
This and the intro of Guardians of the cosmos are lowkey 🔥, catchy as every corny intro of the 90s 😅
FINALLY! A high quality version!
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) is from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment.
@@Naminski1a I knew that.
I am showing the pilot to two girls I babysit for. I recently got them into the DIC dub (yes, they’ve seen the Viz dub, too). I look forward to them seeing this version!!
did this ever happen?? what were their reactions??
Thank you for taking this clip. It has been stuck in my head since your documentary came out. 😅 As always, a huge thank you for finding this clean footage. You have done a HUGE service for the Sailor Moon fan community. Please, link your Patreon! We need to pay you for that work!
Ok but this is catchy AF
Thank you so much for this!!!! 8D
Awesome I was wondering if you were going to upload this separately 🥰 thanks again big sis
It's pretty rare to find live action, hand drawn animation, and CGI all in the same production, especially one of this age. The CGI transformation isn't even bad by early 90s standards, even without considering that this is basically ashcan.
Mid-'90s.
I never thought we would all see direct captured footage of the toon makers sailor moon 🌙 intro and pilot episode 😀
Starring:
Stephanie Decker as Victoria/Sailor Moon
Mindy Cowan as Kendall(I renamed her from their original name, Blue)/Sailor Mercury
Dani Delacey as Dana/Sailor Mars
Tami Adrian George as Sarah/Sailor Jupiter
Unknown Latina Actress as Carrie/Sailor Venus
Melendy Britt as Luna
Adrienne Barbeau as Queen Serenity and Queen Beryl
Good thing DIC decide the anime in the US instead.
You’d have had no resistance. None at all. 😂😂😂
Thanks for uploading. Sad, really. You can tell there was at least some effort thrown at this. Thank goodness for the Library of Congress!
You really did an awesome job finding this very lost gem of this. I’d definitely gonna check out the documentary on this one.
this makes me look forward to the next thing you find. it's almost like a lost digital buried treasure hunt.
Thank you so much for uploading this! I'll check the documentary, as well.

*Ah, the 90's... Where you could really do these dances without fear of ending up on the internet, becoming MeMe or ending up on TikTok.* 😂
*And says the legend, SAILOR MOON wasn't the only anime to turn live-action in the 90s. They say SAINT SEIYA also became a live-action in the 90's lost in time... He was even the first to turn the character Shun, into a woman (long before Netflix). It's just rumours, I don't know if it's true. I read an article about when they announced that SAILOR MOON live-action from the 90's, had been made available on the internet. But have you ever wondered if it's true.* 😁
Wish they released this ! Need to bring this back on to dvd
A surprise banger of a song, even though I will always prefer Moonlight Densetsu
Dear lord, they were really phoning it in with the windsurfing and ships.
"Don't you see, fellow board members? It's SAILOR Moon. Get it? Because she's a SAILOR?"
Glad you posted it.
The one time the dub and the sub are the superior versions.
Awesome I just love that this was finally found 😀 and a clean version
Dear gods so glad this did not happen. Sailor moon is my favorite anime of all time. Being the huge fan that I am I could not see that happening if we got this ..tho I must say I have 2 rooms in my house for sailor moon merch alone so if we did end up getting this I would have 2 extra rooms in my house since I would not be so dedicated to sailor moon merch
Both versión could coexist
@@RolandTemplar they could but look how awful this looks would you really want them to?
2 rooms for Sailor Moon merch? As a basement-dwelling college student living with my parents, I'm super-jealous. 😅
@@JarethTheGoblinKingForever lol you wont be in collage forever.. and yeah 2 rooms i been collecting sailor moon merch since i was a youngling. Have a lot of time and money in it. My only other collection that comes close to the size of my sailor moon collection would be my harley quinn collection then in 3rd is my chun-li collection
Totally feel like this is a "New Coke" scenario: The mistake wasn't making the Americanized version, the mistake was thinking it had to be that or the DIC dub.
Today is the day the American Sailor Moon was uploaded today after being found.
This would make a great aerobics track 😊
😂 точно
Honestly, if there's one way to describe the Toonmakers version of Sailor Moon, it's that it looks like a typical 80s cartoon made just to sell toys.
And also, Sailor Moon in this looks like a blatant She-Ra knock-off.
Son: Mom,can we have Sailor Moon in our home?
His mother: We have Sailor Moon in our home.
Sailor Moon at their home:
Not gonna lie, for something this old, I can respect that this is the 90s nostalgia thing, but when it comes to the US trying to also make a live cartoon style of sailor Moon, makes me wanna stick to the original Japanese version, my opinion though, cause this is too cheesy for my taste
And they did sailor mars dirty on this one
We all need to get down on our knees and thank God for making it so we didn't have to grow up with this
Good thing these never greenlighted.
There she is! Ray Mona is truly the Light of Feminine Lost Media!
this opening was pretty catchy honestly
Been waiting for this😍😍 thank youu!!
Well lets be honest, without this rendition of it; we would not have the sailor moon we have now
Just Got Notified!
I'm glad this was found and even more thankful this never took off.
This is hella catchy imo!
0:44 1:03 - these scenes aren't included in pilot. Earlier it was mentioned as 17 minutes long, so they might belong to those 7 minutes more footages.
You know the pilot would work better if it was fully animated.
Yeah but then it wouldn’t be saban moon ya know? What’s the point of JUST reanimating it? This was based off power rangers approach.
Thank you for uploading the intro. This has been stuck in my head ever since the documentary.
