In the UK, Cartoon Network didn't get that far into the show. I guess the CN UK were creeped out on how the dubbing company that did S and Super S handled Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune.
Oh my God. That was like every bad teen girl stereotype rolled into one. Sailor Moon was my introduction to anime as well. I watched the horrible American dub. I owned some of the VHS as well. It was my first experience with how much we sensor stuff here.
Honesty, I never actually knew that there was an American version, a pilot of the show until only recently from another TH-cam user, I may not be a sailor Moon fan anymore but learning about this kind of info about what things were like before changes were made is interesting And it really makes you look things in a different perspective And you start to understand why certain changes were made when you look at it from another angle This is lost media with a capital LM
This was wild! It kinda blows my mind to think about what we could've gotten had things went down differently, but in that respect, I am thankful we have the original Sailor Moon anime that's made such a huge cultural impact on animation. Ray Mona's documentary was so cool to watch and see the whole journey she went through to find this piece of lost media and learn about more of the behind-the-scenes makings of this show! She also did mention how Mercury's actress wasn't actually a paraplegic, but then again, the 90's were a different time and I'm sure the creators had only good intentions since they wanted to create a diverse cast of heroes for young girls, similar to what Power Rangers was! In the end, this was definitely an interesting journey to go through and see this lost pilot finally being found!
The animation reminds me a bit of the OG She-ra with the cheesey dialogue/fights and headband. (No hate though to She-ra. 80s She-ra was awesome, and to this day is my favorite superhero. )

That’s the same argument that I made about this pilot episode. Although there might have been diversity as far as appearances goes they all seem to have the same type of personality and all of them are interested in the same things. At least in the anime version they have different personalities and are interested in different things.
I hate how America has to ruin and whitewash EVERYTHING, LIKE PRECURE? A.K.A GLITTERFORCE? also you should watch precure. BUT LIKE THE ORIGINAL SAILOR MOON HAS SO MUCH work put into it. Each scene was hand painted and drawn, beautiful music, story and it was so amazing 💕 I'll never let go

What got me into anime was when Mazinger Z was brought to the US in '85, under the title "Tranzor Z". The voice acting was not bad, and the music was actually better than the 70's elevator music it originally had, and watching the episodes we did get (Mazinger Z was about 96 or so episodes, but Tranzor Z only had 65, we lost 30+ episodes due to American syndication of the 1980's, etc), the censorship was pretty minimal, in the episodes I had on tape, back in the day. It had a lot less censorship, and a LOT less CRINGE than what Voltron gave (To this day, Go!lion, the original Japanese lion force Voltron, and Dairugger XV, the original Japanese vehicle force Voltron, in its original, uncut Japanese is the only way to watch it, imo). The US dub of Macross do you remember love had like, what, a third to half of the contents removed, including important bits in the climax. We don't see what happened to Hikaru......he's like missing after killing the big baddy.....for a few years, I wondered, "did Hikaru perish in the explosion?", for this was early 1995, when the internet was JUST born for the public.....shit, it was still crowning in the delivery. All that, and more, is why I just stick to the original Japanese with subtitles.
"That render is rough." Yeah. Time has not been kind to animation and VFX. On VHS tapes, we now live in a world where a generation has grown up without CD's and computers without disc trays. Time isn't being kind to the 90's generation.
I would not be surprised if this is why English dubs got popular, Americans had to do something, and English dubbing is the best thing that ever happened to anime released in the west, because we get some good anime and video games to boot, plus all the amazing voice talents we have today
While I applaud this show for its diversity in characters appearances I must say that I prefer the Japanese anime version because it had diversity of personality in the characters. In this episode they featured all of the sailor scouts as only being interested in clothes and makeup (and probably boys too) in their everyday lives. In the Japanese anime version each scout has a different interest. Mercury is interested in books, computers, math, science etc while Jupiter loves to cook. This of course is just a small list of their diverse interests.
To be fair, he did die in season 1 and 5, and was too weak in season 4, but he did help Chibi-usa and Usagi in season 2 and season 3 he did keep Chibi-usa alive with his life force, but in season 1 he did save Usagi’s ass more then once not against the “big bad” Queen Barel but from episode to episode against the monsters and the 4 crystal/rock leaders lol
I do agree that the diversity is nice, but it definitely felt like they were pushing that so hard just to say “hey, we are diverse and this show isn’t cultural appropriation” even though it kinda is, but the original anime and even Sailor Moon Crystal is way better plus I think the Viz Media redub VAs are phenomenal and fit every character so well like now that I’ve seen so many animes I can pick Erica Mendez, Cherami Leigh, and Christina Vee out every time I hear them, but I still will always think of them as Haruka, Minako and Rei lol

Not even Luna’s gonna put up with this. She may have nine lives but there too short for that. 5:15 Believe me this won’t be the only toy plug in they put in this show. The compact, those flying hang gliders, Mercury’s battle chair. 7:05 Oh come on! How can you have Tuxedo mast without the top hat?! That just takes away from the ensemble. I actually used to have Salor Moon VHS tapes too. And VHS for other anime too. I mean on one hand the diversity is nice. But on the other hand part of me wonders if the wheelchair girl was added so they could push more toys. Because you know if they did come out with the complete line of toys that battle chair was being sold separately.
Yes this is corny, but it is important to remember that it is a pilot episode. A low budget proof of concept. If it had taken off, it probably would have been better than this. They used this template for other shows that turned out better.

Wow 😳😳😳......well, I really liked the diversity in the characters but to be honest, that's about as far as I can go but I give them an A+ for effort on the idea. Speaking of crazy Americanized versions of anime, Zamber, have you watched the English dubbed version of an anime called Ghost Stories? If not, look it up and believe me when I say you'll see and hear every definition of the word insanity on that show because the English dubbed version is so crazy I'm wondering how they let kids watch it. Although, if you're going to react to Ghost Stories then I would advise censoring a bit for younger viewers cause they swear like sailors in the show.
With all due respect Zamber, and this coming from someone who likes older animation techniques, this looks awful. Why, I think the company who made this pilot got in trouble with Japan, just like TriStar got in trouble with their Godzilla(1998) movie, though the animated series that came afterwards was awesome.
I give a lot of sympathy for anything that was made before I was born lol So, I try not to judge the animation since this was merely a mock up and nowhere near the final product. Even as a kid in 1984, Voltron left a nasty taste in my mouth, due to the censorship, the voice acting and trying to 'americanize' the series. Go!Lion is the only way to watch that series. And we all can't forget Poke'mon's famous (infamous) 'jelly doughnuts' If the original Dragon Ball would have had the 1995 Ocean voice actors (they are the ones who did the Ranma 1/2 series in the mid 90's, uncut), with the modern uncensored Funimation did, it would be excellent. 1995's Ocean dub of Dragon Ball was censored (and the air brushing was god awful), but excellent voice acting. Funimation gave a uncensored Dragon Ball, but BAD voice acting...and totally different dialogue when you have the dub and the subtitles going at the same time. It's original Japanese with subtitles for me. If you ever take requests for reaction series, try "Combatants will be dispatched!" and "Star Trek Lower Decks", as well as "Moyashimon: Tales of Agriculture", "Moyashimon Returns", and of course, the classic "Lucky Star", please. :D

They didn't let kids watch it. It was a straight to dvd release with a 13+ age rating before it was on streaming platforms.

Well...that was gross. Some things were cool though. They're powers seemed a little more useful and diversity was nice. The rest though....
