    I waterbathed my marinara sauce, i added 2 tbsp of lemon juice to each jar before pouring in the sauce then waterbath for at least 35 mins turn off heat and let sit 5 mins before taking jars out....its acidic enough with the tomatoes and added lemon juice so u only have to waterbath

    We have been slaving over a hot stove, removing our tomato skins and cooking our sauce for hours. I have already saved your tomato sauce recipe for us to use instead, and it will be SUCH a time saver!! I also found myself thinking exactly what you said about making pizza, as the crust is not that hard to make. I'm curious if you have ever tried gluten free flour in this recipe? I have a bladder disease called Interstitial Cystitis, and I am not supposed to eat tomatoes, ever. But, I found I can have home grown tomatoes grown to be as acid free as possible (putting baking soda in the soil and buying the right variety!) So growing our own and making sauce for the year is very important to us! Thank you again for the amazing recipes!

    Your soup looked so delicious. Because of arthritis and Crohn’s disease, it’s been recommended to me not to consume the skin and seeds of tomatoes. We do love tomato soup around here and I had hoped to master a homemade version as buying an organic option is ridiculously expensive and still may not be what we are looking for. Your video is the second video this week that I have watched recommending roasting. I am definitely giving roasting the tomatoes first a try. Thank you for sharing.

    I wondered what your canning process is. When I do fruit or tomatoes, I bring the pressure up to 15# then turn the heat off and let the canner cool. I've done it that way for years and it's so much faster than taking it to 10# and keeping it at that pressure for any amount of time.

      They are there, usually playing in the living room or outside. We certainly have our moments too but for the most part they are great independent players who always have projects and things that they are working on. The under 2 age can be more challenging but I'll just throw her in the carrier if her project is unrolling the toilet paper roll or something similar ;).

      I suspect you need to have the sausage pre-cooked. Sitting on top of the dough and stuff it wouldn't cook evenly and would leave little.pools of fat. I worked at a pizza place for a few years and all of our meats were precooked.

    Hello! Can you please tell me about your stove? It's the exact style we are hoping to have in our future home build, but when looking in up the AGA brand it shows prices of $30k USD or higher. Where did you get yours? I'm assuming it's an older one? I'm very curious! Thank you!
    Also your videos are very inspirational! We are also a family of 6 and we just bought our first 3 acres. We are going to homestead as soon as we can get on the land. We'll be keeping sheep, growing vegetables, flowers, lavender, alfalfa, and likely a few fruit trees.
    Our kids enjoy watching your videos as well, they enjoy pointing out all the kitchen/food items that we have that are the same as yours. :)

      That's so exciting!! Congratulations on your new homestead! When we were renovating our home in 2020, I told Jim that an AGA was my dream oven but I knew that it would never happen. He started searching on Facebook Marketplace and one came up in our area for nothing, just the cost of hiring movers. I'm still in awe that it worked out! We got the deal of a lifetime but I do see them pop up every so often by us in the 5k range for the size that we have.

    Maybe you have already explained this in a previous video but how do you season your cast iron? I don't use soap on mine but it still doesn't always have enough seasoning on it to prevent food sticking. Also are there any foods you don't cook in your cast iron because of acidity or anything? Because i have used mine for spaghetti sauce but it strips the seasoning. Thanks in advance and I love your imaginative and simply recipes and preserving methods.

    • @FromScratchFarmstead
      @FromScratchFarmstead  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I always make sure to heat the cast iron before adding anything to it and cook in plenty of fat and haven't had any issues with sticking. It just naturally gets seasoned through cooking this way :). Thanks for watching!

    Overall what do you think of growing broccolini?
    Made my first sourdough whole wheat bread today, overall it rose and tastes fine. It is a very hearty loaf and the dough was tough and hard to fold and work with. Does your sourdough bread behave like that?
    What are you going to do with all the eggs from all the chickens, will you be selling some?

    • @FromScratchFarmstead
      @FromScratchFarmstead  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We aren't sold on the broccolini and may just go back to growing regular broccoli.
      Yay for making sourdough. A whole wheat loaf can definitely be a bit more dense. Do you think you need more liquid if the dough was tough? Without seeing it, it's hard to know but I wouldn't describe the dough that way.
      We sometimes sell some or give them away to family. :)

    The way you hold you knife is not the most efficient. I learned from TV shows (and then my own research) how chefs hold their knives in order to be able to slice faster. I don't know if I can describe it, but you hold the blade above the handle between your thumb and pointer finger. The handle is, basically at this point, just a counter-balance. It makes for easier and more efficient cutting. Having said that, if you're used to a certain way, it may be better to continue with it rather than change to something else.... God bless!
