Correction: the pass name is Hurricane, not Hurrah which is in Utah. The drone shot credited to my Son @michaelcharliedelta. He rode the pass a week earlier on 800GS Adventure. See his COBDR on his channel.
I posted the same question down in the comments but reposting here hoping for a reply. Are you using an adjustable midrange screw to keep the DR happy at high altitude?
I have not touched the carb in any way since set up at near sea level. Procycle carb kit with opened air box, LeoVince exhaust. It did fine both on the TAT in 2019 and since. Sounds crazy!
Very impressive seeing you climb Ophir Pass from the West side. Congratulations JR on succeding this well known difficult Pass. You're a great inspiration for me to live more adventure on my motorcycle. I greatly appreciate your video for I plan to do the COBDR next summer. I think Ophir Pass will be my biggest challenge on that route. Just hope that the weather will be as good as you had with minimal traffic. Can't wait to see your next video with Brock Gill. ''Less fear, more adventure!'' Great content from you as always. Thank you so much.
I didn’t even realize I was doing Ophir till I arrived at it. Glad to have had the weather on my side. @BigRockMoto has a good video of the pass on his COBDR. Brock is releasing video tomorrow where I join him. Good guy.
JR & DR, dual sporting beast! Great job of riding those incredible mountain trails. When they look steep on the camera, they ARE steep. You captured beautiful video of the mountains in all their splendor. Just stunning. Video editing and music top notch. I'm stunned that people are that clueless driving their cars on those roads. Cheers!
So impressive! Your core strength, cardio, grip strength (got arm pump just watching the video), legs strength... and yes that dude on the GSA was killing it too! Ton of respect! The mental state of those ppl taking their cars up there!? This new generation has lost it. Ha!
Another excellent video, looking forward to seeing the next video, even if Brock is in it. Just kidding he seems like a great guy and he also makes great videos. Let’s Ride
All I can say is WOW ! You got the moxie sir , thanks for a stunning video , again . I will keep my thoughts on anyone attempting that pass on anything wider than a side by side to myself .
... another excellent video !!! can't ride anymore , back issues , so glad to see someone my age do'n it !!! I always wanted to try one of those bikes - Thank You ! have done some of these trails in my full size pickup ... safe travels ...
It was a little worse when we went up a week later. More dry and lots more traffic. We went into Ouray and enjoyed ourselves there, then took the alt route, which turned out to be excellent.
Thats funny. I was relaxing after getting home from Georgia this evening watching this same video and remembered your question and thought "well, If he watches this it should explain it all"!
Putting the Bush Pig and the body to some real tests on those passes! I've been over them in a suzuki samurai and they are no joke. Animas Fork is one of my favorite spots to stop! The mining history there is something else for sure! Appreciate you bringing us along man!! Looking forward to the next one!
I think a Yamaha TW200 would probably be made for loose rock because of the fat tires, I would have to try it and see if I ever decided to get one. Great Video
I first rode Ophir Pass in 2003 and the upper section was far better condition. I heard locally that the maintainers leave it less improved for the off road types. It use to be considered one of the easier passes but from your video, corkscrew looks easier. Great video.
I did Ophir in my Land Cruiser a couple years back. A few motos went down in front of me in the big scree. I was happy to get out and give them a push.
Enjoyed the video! Yes, I can believe there was a Toyota Camry on Ophir Pass, because when I was through there on the TAT in 2021, a box truck had attempted it, was stuck, and the entire pass was closed because of it. Who does that? LOL We had to detour.
Great ride on the DR. Well beyond my skill level for sure. As we approach National DR650 Appreciation Day (as proclaimed by Verbal Widget) it's great to see the bike put through its paces. Thanks!
Taking a Camry on Ophir Pass is next level adventure riding!! 😂 Those GSs may be heavier than your DR but they have gobs of torque at their disposal, which more than makes up for the weight......imho. What an incredible ride you had that day!!
Good job keeping it upright and on the path on that rocky climb, looked serious. And assembling these videos, you have skillful instincts and craftsmanship. Can't help but wonder what you did in your working life. You've also been blessed with good health and the ability/knowledge to maintain it. At 73 it's nothing short of impressive. But who's counting? 😂 Just keep gettin' it, have purpose and direction with God's help! ☮️
@@jrdepew I knew it was something that required intelligence and skill! I solo'd at weyers cave, what a terrific learning experience. My friend (the one who photographed the bridges) kept his plane at luray. We had some fun trips in his plane. Boy the time sure knows how to get away... Blessings!
Sure enjoying your videos of this latest trip! Your channel is my favorite on TH-cam. What tires did you use this trip? You’d mentioned they were working well.
An amazing video and ride JR. I am very impressed with your videos. I have a 2017 DR650. Great bike. As I watch the video I try to figure out the route. Any chance of posting the routes somewhere?
Thanks, better lucky than good sometimes! I have Cogent Mojave rear shock and Cogent modified front with their cartridge drop-ins and constant rate springs. It’s very good for my purposes. 14/42 but I have the 15/42 with me.
Wow! What a beautiful ride! Hey does that helmet cause issues at 50+ mph? I have a wr250 and ride with a dirt bike helmet. It pulls my head back over 50.
It does some. More than my Arai adventure helmet. Probably less than a dirt bike helmet cause it is designed to flow higher speed air. The bill is removable. Good for price.
Huge respect on the Olphir pass! Brock drugged me down Olphir back in 2020 I had less than 50 miles experience on a dirt bike and it was the first day of riding in Colorado. Great times and some good memories.
Great Job JR. And great riding especially through that tricky section past the Camry. Watching that made me nervous. My goal is to be like you 30 years and be doing even more adventure and have more skills then I do now. Have you had any issues with DR650 since you've owned it?
It has been flawless for 26,000 hard miles. I did have an ignition box pin problem while on the ORBDR 2023 and covered on my channel. Due primarily to rackless luggage compressing onto the plug and breaking off pins.
There seem to be a lot of pretty big displacement bikes on this route. Do you think it would be possible to load up a Honda CRF300L dual sport with camping gear and do the same route? Just trying to get a feel for whether or not this could be done on a smaller bike.
I’m a ‘returning rider’ at age 66. Had a street bike in the ‘80s, that was a long time ago! Would like to do some motocamping and plan to do the Pennsylvania BDR-X this summer, which is dirt/gravel roads. I’m shopping for a dual sport, the Honda CRF300L is a good one but the Yamaha TW200 might be safer for me, although that bike can’t really do interstate highways. I don’t care much for street riding at this point, really just want to be off road in the backcountry. Thanks for the inspiring content!

Congratulations JR, you rode that DR like a champ over those passes!
Hanging on!

Thanks for watching!
Amazing riding - I am enjoying your moto-adventure. I can't wait to get out on my DR650 and explore some trails and camp.
Right on!
All I can say is WOW ! You got the moxie sir , thanks for a stunning video , again . I will keep my thoughts on anyone attempting that pass on anything wider than a side by side to myself .

I’m very grateful to still ride these trails. Sidexsides or pickups come to us all eventually.
It was a little worse when we went up a week later. More dry and lots more traffic. We went into Ouray and enjoyed ourselves there, then took the alt route, which turned out to be excellent.
But you made it and got a story to tell. Good on ya!
FYI, that wasn't Hurrah pass ,it was Hurricane pass. Nice video though. Looking forward to your visit with Brock.
Ahh, so close! Thanks for correction.
Epic music to some magnificent shots! Well done, JR! Great video!
Thank you immensely, music is a tough but rewarding medium to use. The scenery is so grand you can’t mess up.
Ophir is definitely one where very few people have ever wished for a bigger bike.
I may revisit on my WR250R soon. What an awesome day that was.
Hello, I've watched many videos of this type and this one ranks right up there with the best of them. Good job JR .
Whow! Appreciate that bunch’s.
Joe, this weekend when I asked you "what makes Ophir pass so hard?". I understand now. hahaha. you're a great rider.
Thats funny. I was relaxing after getting home from Georgia this evening watching this same video and remembered your question and thought "well, If he watches this it should explain it all"!
Joe this is a beautiful video. I really hope I get to do this sometime.
It was memorable, no doubt.

I’m sure they appreciated it. Adventure brotherhood.
Good riding, im still having flashbacks from that pass.
Fearsome Ophir! No picnic!

Great video. Good to know I'm not the only one who has to work on roads like Ophir Pass.
Not at all!
Did one with my boys. Loved it. I have some many places I would love to ride. May be awhile before I'm back there Lord willing.
So many places, so little time!
Great ride on the DR. Well beyond my skill level for sure. As we approach National DR650 Appreciation Day (as proclaimed by Verbal Widget) it's great to see the bike put through its paces. Thanks!
What day is that? Need to put on the calendar! Light some candles and prepare appropriate remarks.

Amen to that! From 30 till retirement I was a pilot. Health wise, good genetics I 🤔 think.

Right!
Awesome
Thanks!
Mr. DePew, I absolutely enjoy you video's. I'm glad you met Brock. I hope to meet and ride with you someday. How can I contact you?

Probably not much help, Started on WABDR, pavement to IDBDR, pavement to UTBDR, from Green River, UT I'm on Trans America Trail tracks.
cant wait, soon.
It will be epic!
Do you have a video that breaks down your camping setup and luggage?
No. Maybe I’ll do one. Nothing real special. Just tending to light and minimal.
Beautifully ridden and shot. Another good one-thanks.
Are you running stock gearing, 15/42? Suspension mods?
Thanks, better lucky than good sometimes! I have Cogent Mojave rear shock and Cogent modified front with their cartridge drop-ins and constant rate springs. It’s very good for my purposes. 14/42 but I have the 15/42 with me.
Wow!! Best yet!! And that guy driving the Toyota must forfeit his man card in violation of basic common sense!
It was crazy. I’m sure some 4x4’s rescued them if the oil pan survived.
The Toyota guy never had a man card and if he did someone screwed up in handing it out!

Nope. Set it up at sea level per Pro Cycle and never had a problem.

Wow, those were some serious altitudes! Did you have any jetting issues JR?
No I didn't. Other than judicious use of choke for cold starts I had no issues.
Great ride I wish I was there. Do you have any suspicion modes done to your DR
Cogent Dynamics, front and rear.
