roger wasnt the samdman , he stole the sandman money so he could pay for the warrant to get his friend roger and steal his money and if he wasnt in his situation with the Russians he would've never went after roger
Fun fact, Alonzo was supposed to get away but Denzel demanded that his character get what was coming to him. A true masterful performance by one of the greats!
Denzel Washington won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his brilliant menacing performance in Training Day! Fun fact: Some of his lines in the movie were improvised by Denzel, especially his iconic "King Kong ain't got shit on me" line! He's truly a legend!
Nothing that he did was for anyone but himself. He wasn’t just going after the big fish to be altruistic or anything, he was just a psychotic corrupt cop abusing power. No need to try and find a redeeming quality, there wasn’t one. He had been doing this for years, it’s not like he just turned bad after a mistake in Vegas. That mistake was just his downfall after years of getting away with basically being a crime boss with a badge.
Perfectly said. Man was literally a murderer and absolutely evil. His "friends" in his head backing Jake at the end said it all. People hating on Jenny and calling her a gold-digger in Forrest Gump is the only common misconception that drives me crazier. Only when she got clean did she ever seek out Forrest just to heal/rest. And only when she was dying did she ask anything more.
It's not really a grey area, Alonzo pretended to have a warrant to search the woman's house so he could steal from her . The guy Alonzo shot was his "friend." He knew what his friend was doing all along so if Alonzo didn't need the money, he would've never did anything to the man. Lastly Alonzo left Jake there to die, ain't no grey area, Alonzo deserved everything that happened to him.

Alonzo and Roger had history. Roger was also an LAPD Narcotics officer but he was also a drug trafficker during his days as a Police Officer and even during Retirement. There was also a rumor that the 3 Wise Men from the restaurant that Alonzo and Roger stole money confiscated from drug dealers at the LAPD division and Roger was somehow a loose end since he planned to use that money for himself in the Philippines since Police Internal Affairs will ask Roger how he was able to collect a high pension as a Narcotics Officer, making Roger a threat. In other words, Jake was supposed to kill Roger so Jake can lose his job as a Narcotics trainee but Alonzo had to do the dirty job with the other corrupt cops and Alonzo realized Jake was also a threat and needed to be killed.
17:41 Fun fact: Snoop’s character wasn’t supposed have weed on him. But, no matter how many takes they did, Denzel kept finding more. As production began to run behind schedule, and Fuqua was facing disputes with the Teamsters, he just had Snoop ad-lib the medicinal line.

49:42 - Did you notice how the reporter in the final scene quoted Denzel's line from 28:51, except the story actually turned out to be about Denzel's character instead of Ethan's.
For me this had to be the first movie I seen Denzel in where he wasn't a good guy but he did a great job with this role. It's like when the good guy has been good for so long and he finally turns bad
You mean Denzel finally playing a bad guy or Alonzo turning evil? I think Alonzo's been evil all along is why I'm asking is all. Anyway, it's definitely one of Denzels best. Ethan Hawke held his own too.

No He wasn't the Sandman. Macy Gray was the wife/girlfriend of the Sandman. So this is what happened. Alonzo was in Vegas where he got into a beef with an important Russian and beat him to death. The Russians didn't appreciate this too much and gave Alonzo the chance to live by telling him to pay for the death of this important Russian. Obviously, Alonzo didn't have the money. The Russians gave him a week to get it, or he would be killed. So Alonzo cooked up this scheme. He was always a crooked cop, he and the others he ran the streets with. He and his group manufactured this scheme to get the money he needed to pay off the Russians. Unfortunately, he was saddled with this rookie cop he didn't have time to deal with, and so the only way to get above all that training bullshit is to try to get the kid (Hoyt) involved, talking all this BS about getting the bigger fish and all that garbage. Alonzo never cared about the big fish. He was a crooked cop who'd once been a good cop. Anyway, he had seven days to find the money for the Russians or he was going to be killed, but then he finds out he has this rookie cop he has to look after, and he didn't have time for all that. So he tried to make the kid a part of it, bring him into the scheme by making all kinds of promises he was not -- or could not -- deliver. And Hoyt, being naive, at first believed him (just like all of us did, watching the movie). Alonzo's plan to get the money for the Russians had been in the works before Hoyt was dropped in his lap, so he had no choice but to try to bring Hoyt along, only Hoyt wasn't going for it. First things first, Alonzo had to get to the Sandman, and get the money he needed to bride the top guys in his police department to get the warrant for Roger, his "friend", with whom he had had a relationship for ten years and with whom he had been involved in shady things. By the time of this movie, Alonzo had been corrupt for a long time, which is evidenced by the corrupt cops he had in his squad and the street characters he associated with. He had associations with corrupt cops in the higher levels of his department, and he had nurtured a lot of relationships with many people operating above the law, in the shadows. So at the time of this movie, there was nothing redeemable in him, and all of his claims that he did the things he did in order to get the bigger fish was just smoke and mirrors for Hoyt's benefit, to try to get him to play along. None of it was true. At this point he was a stone cold criminal. Sandman was in prison, at an honor ranch, but Alonzo was able to steal the $40,000 from his girlfriend. This money was to pay for the arrest warrant he needed for Roger, which is why he met with the higher-ups of his department. And this wasn't the first time he'd bought arrest warrants. "Who's driving?" "Me..the green Mercedes?" It was a well-oiled machine of corruption. Alonzo got his warrant and then went to visit Roger. Of course, the arrest warrant was not only bogus because it was fraudulent, but it was also bogus because Alonzo was never going to arrest Roger. His sole purpose was to kill Roger and steal the money in Roger's floor in order to pay off the Russians. And he'd been planning it for a week, long before he about Hoty. Obviously, he couldn't steal Roger's money and allow Roger to live. So again, Alonzo tried to get Hoyt involved, by not only trying to bribe him with the money he was stealing but also by trying to implicate him in Roger's shooting. If Hoty had done the shooting, he would be involved in all of it, and there would be no redemption for him. When he didn't go for it, Alonzo knew that Hoty was a liability and decided to kill him. While leaving Roger's house he called Smiley and his gang to set up for Hoyt's murder. It didn't quite turn out that way. The rest is history.

He was actually at his worst. Why did he have to be crooked in order to win an Oscar!? He didn't perform well enough in any other movie before Training Day?
Another great Denzel Washington movie you should check out is Man on fire! Its about a bodyguard who goes to great lengths to rescue the daughter of the family he works for who was kidnapped.
Was Alonzo a bad guy? Love that you struggled with that question. A character is not judged bad or good based upon the result of what they do but by their motivation for doing. When he shot his 'friend' (as you called him), even though it may have removed a drug dealer from the streets (a good thing), that's not why he killed him. For 10 years prior he could have killed him (or arrested him) and saved a lot of kids getting addicted to drugs. When he killed him it was for his own needs, not for the needs of the community. His needs were also created by his own actions, not the actions of others. So the answer to the question is, 'Yes, Alonzo was a bad guy.' I hope that helps.
You are wrong, he said he watched him operate with impunity, which means Alonzo was not able to get him until that day. His motivations were selfish, but his motivation was to survive, which is understandable. He wasn't collecting the money to be frivolous with it, he was collecting the money to purchase his own life.
@@dwl3006 That's an interesting opinion. I won't say you are wrong, because there is no right or wrong insofar as opinions go. My comment might appear like I'm saying it as a flat fact, but again it is only an opinion. Comments sections are replete with opinions, it's the place you go to when you have an opinion about something featured in a video. However 'impunity' means that he committed the offences with no fear of punishment - not that Alonzo had no power to intervene. Alonzo knew he was committing these offences so could have punished him a lot sooner than he did. Alonzo provided that impunity by not telling in the first place. So unfortunately I cannot accept your opinion in this case. Just because something is understandable, it doesn't make it right. And Alonzo created the situation whereby he required the money in the first place. He was prepared to commit murder in order to pay what he had to and earn his own impunity - since it would never come back on him if his friend was dead. Again, just my opinion.
@@FrancisXLord No, what Alonzo was saying was that he was powerless to intervene for those 10 years. Alonzo knew he was commiting offences but that certainly does not mean that he could have punished him sooner because the entire theme of the movie is that the system is corrupt, which means that power players get away with their crimes. He operated with impunity means Alonzo (and nobody else for that matter) had any ability to stop him for those 10 years. Alonzo would not say that he operated with impunity if Alonzo himself had the power to stop him. Alonzo had no power to intervene until Training Day. Now, maybe Alonzo was lying and he did have the power to stop him before, but that doesn't change the intention of his statement which was to convey that he had no power to intervene prior to that day. He was prepared to commit murder to save himself, which as you said, is not right but understandable. He did create the situation but admitted it was a mistake, and what even a normal person is willing to do in order to preserve their own life is very accurately portrayed by Alonzo. You would be surprised how ruthless someone can become just to save their own life.
@@dwl3006 'Impunity' is derived from the from the Latin word 'impunitas' in turn from 'impunis' which means 'unpunished'. It does not mean that he couldn't have been punished, and Alonzo demonstrates that he could have been punished by punishing him when it was convenient for him. Why didn't he do that sooner? Incidentally, there were legal means by which he could have obtained a search warrant if he was witness to his crimes, but he needed one in a hurry and didn't have time to go through the usual process.
@@FrancisXLord You are being too literal, and it makes me wonder if English is even your first language. If he says he operated with impunity, he is implying that nobody was able to stop him, otherwise he wouldn't be able to operate with impunity. He literally compares it to a chess game, where it took him 10 years to finally have the opportunity to "checkmate" his opponent, which means prior to that moment, the opportunity was not there. If he operated with impunity, it is never without a reason, and it is never because other people aren't trying to punish him (including competition). This shows you have a shallow understanding of what impunity means and implies. What operating with impunity literally means is that Roger was able to sell drugs without consequences or fear because he had the power, connections and protection to do so. Any other interpretation that deviates from this is mental gymnastics and simply bad knowledge of English language. Remember he had to convince the three wise men to allow him to do it, which means it was in their hands, not Alonzo's, and they only agreed because Alonzo was able convince them of then necessity of the operation. He didn't do it sooner because the three wise men did not allow him to do it sooner. And why didn't the three wise men allow it sooner? We will never know because the movie does not tell us but usually in situations like that it is because of a complex balance of interests and back-scratching relationships. Most likely, someone like Roger was providing some sort of usefulness to either the three wise men directly, or to people that were important to the three wise men. The three wise men by acquiescing to Alonzo's request are clearly vexed, and it is understood that they are sacrificing a valuable asset in hopes of keeping another valuable asset (Alonzo). And as I said, the theme of the movie is that the system is corrupt, so there are many reasons why he could not have gotten a search warrant earlier. For example, Roger was being protected by power figures like the 3 wise men. More than likely was that Roger was useful in other ways in which Alonzo, and others needed him up until that point. The fact that you keep harping on this point shows that you have a naive understanding of corruption. Again, if someone operates with impunity in a corrupt environment, it is almost always because they are heavily connected to various layers of legal, judicial and political protection, usually with a combination of bribery and blackmail (if I go down I am taking you with me). Maybe it's better if you stick to watching easy to understand Disney cartoons.
Fact about this movie: the script was actually written in the 90s and was originally very different. Alonzo was originally a latino cop instead of black.
Damn how can I forget remember the titans. Solid ass movie. Sucks that he only won awards when he played a villain and not that inspirational ass character
There was a narcotics detective in my old city that reminds me a lot of white Alonzo, I’m not saying he’s as bad as Alonzo but he wore a black leather jacket and a gold cross chain and had the exact same kind of personality and drove a 1970 black Dodge Challenger. He scared the absolute shit out of me and my friends. Showed us his tattoos that were tally marks saying that each one was for putting a cap in drug dealers assess. The thing about these guys is they work in the shadows.
Saw this movie when I was younger back in 2014 on demand and loved it ever since. I understand it not being everyone's cup of tea but it's a great crime drama. Denzel and Ethan are very great here. The ending shocked me the first time as well as the reveal he was a villain. Great reaction, guys
Sandman was the person in the ghetto. That shot at them in the beginning with Macy Gray. The friend Alonso had to get permission from that circle of men that he had the green light to take him out and keep his money.
He won because (1) Al Pacino won for "Scent of a Woman" which was Pacino's lifetime achievement award when Denzel ought to have won for "Malcolm X"; and (2) Russell Crowe ought to have won the Oscar for "A Beautiful Mind" the year Denzel won for "Training Day", but politics worked against him including Crowe being arrested in NYC for assault.
His friend that he killed for the money was not Sandman. 18:13 is when they say on the radio that Kevin Miller aka is Sandman. So when they shook down Snoop the street level dealer they got the tip that his supplier was Sandman. They called it in and got his real name and address @ 18:13. They went to Sandman house with the fake warrant to steal his money. That money was then used to buy a real warrant for his friend house who he knew was a real kingpin (but not Sandman) to get the money to pay off the Russians.
Wow, I had never noticed that Alonzo very casually asked Hoight if he carried a backup gun in that first phone conversation. He DID have the entire day planned out way in advance, just like he said. 🤔👀
There's no gray. Alonzo is just purely bad. He IS the big bust. And shooting a drug dealer in no way changes that. If a bad person kills a bad person they're not magically good. Trying to redeem him doesn't work
*"The movie is even more Gary"* some say that Ethan Hawke character kept the money. Because at the end they still announced Denzel character as decorated/ not under investigation officer of 13 years. which mean Ethan Hawke character didn't tell.*
Lol it’s not a grey area to me. That’s saying he’s the lesser of two evils because he took down a big drug dealer. He’s not tho because he was in control the whole time. He committed to that one good thing the whole film lol and it was to his benefit, not because his morals.
great reaction....FYI the guy that Alonzo killed, roger, wasnt the sandman. the sandman was in jail and macy grey was his girl. ROger is Aolonzo's friend an its implied he is a former cop who trained alonzo
He was an ex cop and Alonzo was a rookie cop when they met. Alonzo mentions that the 3 wise men ordered him to Jack Roger and Roger responds about they want his pension.

What saddens me is how you couldn't see how corrupt Denzel was the whole movie 🤣🤣🤣
That's why this movie was masterpiece he was manipulating the viewers too
its because he keeps saying its to catch the big fish
He killed him because he needed that money not because he was selling to kids. 😂😂
Ikr? He's acting like the corrupt things he was doing was for the better of the community lol, it was solely for himself.
25:38 When you realize Roger was just reading the paper with a pistol in his hand.
Ethan Hawke's performance reminds me of Tom Cruise's in Rain Man. No awards and rarely mentioned like his costar was, but damn GREAT performance.

Roger wasn't the Sandman. The forty thousand Alonzo stole to buy the warrant for Roger belonged to the Sandman.
Man on fire, inside man and John Q need to be on your Denzel list!
Man On Fire for sure! 🔥
People liked that movie in the USA?. That movie is so clichee.
One of about 10 movies I watch over and over. Every time I am flipping channels and come across it, I watch it.

Why did he have to be crooked in order to win an Oscar!?
He didn't perform well enough in any other movie before Training Day?
33:16 key word “friendly”
You can be friendly all you want.
Friendship is something very different
Fun fact : One of the Bad guys who was robbing his friend at the house was also the main bad guy in the first Bad Boys movie who killed Mike's friend
40:34 Terry!!! How you doing buddy. Mr. 99. he in alot of movies and used to be Mr. Old Spice.
😂😂
This is my fav Denzel movie! Wooot! You guys keep putting up great stuff.
Denzel Washington enough said. My favorite actor.
Another great Denzel Washington movie you should check out is Man on fire! Its about a bodyguard who goes to great lengths to rescue the daughter of the family he works for who was kidnapped.
_’Smiley’_ is played by Cliff Curtis, who was just in Avatar 2.
Once Were Warriors and 10000 BC
Like Law Abiding Citizen, this is one of those rare movies where the "bad guy" dies and nobody's really celebrating it.
I wasn't celebrating in the end of training day I don't know why
This is is just one of the reasons why he is the goat in acting‼️🐐
The baby 🐦 ... those are the moments us parents live for
After the credits, two police men showed up to his house , opened his trunk of the car, and took the black bag with the money inside.
I don't think I've ever seen it take so long for someone to grasp what's going on in a movie
you can't finish a full bowl in 3 hits LMAO ... one of the funniest scenes to me
Denzel won his Oscar from this role
Fact about this movie: the script was actually written in the 90s and was originally very different.
Alonzo was originally a latino cop instead of black.
You are right, It is inspired by a real LA police officer, although the story is not 100% the same.
Denzel Washington got a Oscar for this performance!!! Great reaction 😃
And he only went after the big fish for the big money. He’s literally the epitome of what most crooked cops have been doing for years
Denzels part "Alonzo" is based on the cop who killed Tu PAc and Biggie. infact the license plate on Denzel's car was the Officer actual Badge number.
My 3 favorite Denzel Washington movies are.
Malcolm X
Remember the titans
A soldiers story
You two should react to those if you haven't seen them.
You get yo hands off my ridge wallet 😂😂😂😂 yall that bit was absolute gold I love this channel
Bought a ship called “I’m gonna live forever” no idea how long that troupe has been around
"KING KONG AIN'T GOT SH*T ON ME!!!"🤬🦍
Saw this movie when I was younger back in 2014 on demand and loved it ever since.
Denzel was good in this no doubt, but in my opinion he deserved an Oscar more for Flight, and Philadelphia. He was tremendous in those.
Malcolm X
He won because (1) Al Pacino won for "Scent of a Woman" which was Pacino's lifetime achievement award when Denzel ought to have won for "Malcolm X"; and (2) Russell Crowe ought to have won the Oscar for "A Beautiful Mind" the year Denzel won for "Training Day", but politics worked against him including Crowe being arrested in NYC for assault.
Great reaction and review! I liked your conversation during the video!
You two gotta watch the Denzel movie Deja Vu you'd love it
Denzel ad libbed the King Kong speech
Masterpiece ever. Great
Y’all should do some hood movies like Menace to society and New jack city 👍🏾
His friend that he killed for the money was not Sandman. 18:13 is when they say on the radio that Kevin Miller aka is Sandman.
So when they shook down Snoop the street level dealer they got the tip that his supplier was Sandman. They called it in and got his real name and address @ 18:13. They went to Sandman house with the fake warrant to steal his money. That money was then used to buy a real warrant for his friend house who he knew was a real kingpin (but not Sandman) to get the money to pay off the Russians.
Antione Fuqua seems to have a quite a few movies with Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke in them.
Wow, I had never noticed that Alonzo very casually asked Hoight if he carried a backup gun in that first phone conversation. He DID have the entire day planned out way in advance, just like he said. 🤔👀
2 gun with Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg is such a great movie. Great action mixed with some comedy you'll love it.
I'd love to see you guys react to "John Q with Denzel Washington"
You can tell the layers on top of layers with this movie by the comments.
Denzel's first academy award for Best actor! He already won supporting actor for Glory.
Everyone was scared of Denzel after this one!
Denzel won his first Oscar as leading man for this movie.
Denzel was speaking Korean in the wig shop, not Chinese. Just a minor clarification lol Great reaction!
Absolutely lovin' this unofficial Denzel journey yer on... I hope this means one day you'll do Deja Vu and/or Unstoppable :)
I'm at 31:52, and I just remembered, this part is not even the climax. The coaster is about to surge up, again, lol.
🤣😂🤣😭 tried justifying a grey area. Great reaction ya'll.
great reaction....FYI the guy that Alonzo killed, roger, wasnt the sandman. the sandman was in jail and macy grey was his girl. ROger is Aolonzo's friend an its implied he is a former cop who trained alonzo
He was an ex cop and Alonzo was a rookie cop when they met. Alonzo mentions that the 3 wise men ordered him to Jack Roger and Roger responds about they want his pension.
I can’t believe that was y’all first time seeing that at the time 😄😄
Denzel was clearly a manipulative, evil, corrupt cop! Cops aren't supposed to steal & murder! Definitely a villain.
So true
