Alonzo's character is masterclass in both writing and acting. His manipulation is a perfect combination of letting Jake make his own assumptions, pressing him when he hesitates, lying, and actually being honest about certain hard truths about cop work. This is always gonna be one of Denzel's best performances, and for good reason.
Denzel was a beast in this film, one of my all time fav movies from him. he was cold and calculating, not one you want to go toe to toe with. great reaction! 👍
@@mikeyb3859 oh bro I should punch myself in the face for not thinking of the book of Eli that might just be my favorite Denzel movie right there 100 out of 10!!!💪🔥✝️
This is one hell of a film and Denzel's performance definitely deserved the Oscar he won, but Ethan Hawke is one of the most underrated actors in modern American cinema. As an actor, he effortlessly went toe to toe with Denzel and was just as worthy of an Oscar nomination.
He got that nom and although he didn't win, it's coming. He's been nominated for nearly every major acting award and is respected as an actor's actor. As he ages we'll see more of his range
Oh I didn't realize he was nominated! First Reformed is an Ethan Hawke film where he definitely didn't get a nomination, despite it being possibly his greatest performance.
When people say someone played a role so well that no one else could've done it better. There's normally like 1-2 guys who maybe could've put up a fight. Like heath ledger joker, Robert Downey Jr iron man and Bryan Cranston Walter white. But this right here there truly is not a single person that would even come close to doing what Denzel did in this movie. This is one of if not the best acting performance I've ever seen. Literally no one would've come close to Denzel.
*Here's another one that has " Finally" been released from you TH-cam Copyright! There are a few release reactions that will be coming so stay tune.Sorry for quality, nonetheless hopefully you all still enjoy my reaction*
You could tell Denzel Washington had fun doing this role. I heard in a interview that about 75 percent of his lines were all improvised. Denzel acted his all off in this film!
No matter what we do in the world, good, bad, or indifferent, It will always come back to us. Jake's good came back to him and saved his life, and Alonso's bad got him gunned down in the middle of the street after all of his so called friends turned their back on him. Great movie.
The first time I saw this, I was stoked to see the Monte Carlo. I had a 1980 Monte, looked pretty much like that. I got it stock, but had it repainted, pulled all the trim, put a spoiler on the back, dropped a 350 in it that came out of a Corvette, 850cc Edelbrock Carb, headers, dual exhaust, 373s in the rear. Also put fat Mickey thompsons on the back and tinted the windows with 20% tint. It was a really heavy car, and just ran on standard fuel since I didn’t do anything else engine wise. It still did 0-60 in 5.5 seconds and the Quarter mile in 14.75. Not the fastest car out there but for what it was and how heavy it was, it held its own. I loved that car, still miss it to this day. Haven’t had anything nearly as powerful since, because I got married and had a kid, so the car had to go to make room for a more practical car for a family. Got rid of it in 1996, Haven’t had anywhere near the cash to be able to get a leisure car since, and still have a Sentra I bought new in 2005. There’s no feeling like being slammed into your seat, unable to lean forward because of the g forces from rapid acceleration. That thing was a beast off the line, just not great at the top end due to the gear ratio. It also got maybe 10 miles per gallon, if I was lucky lol…but gas was like $1.25 a gallon back then for premium.
Nobody does his early movies. (I took a look at IMDB. He has alot of good movies that need to be reviewed.) Mighty Quinn, Fallen, Deja Vu, Philadelphia....just to name a few
Terry Crews, Dre, Snoop, lot of talent in this. Good film, there's a few good gritty cop films. Keanu Reeves did a good one called Street Kings, pretty underrated
The director used Denzel perfectly.. he's NEVER the villain and always plays a hero with strong morals, so we were all giggling at his crazy antics, even if they felt a little off.. then the shotgun scene happens and you STILL wanna trust Alonso.. "make sure that bathtub is clean" says Alonso on the phone, right before he feeds Hoyt that "play along, change things from the inside" bs. Alonso is crazy, he walks into incoming fire.. still plays with Hoyt's mind with a shotgun to the face.. he STILL tries to play him when he shows up at his gf's.. then says he RUNS the ghetto and all the Damus (Bloods) just live there.. "King Kong ain't got 💩 on me" shows you how full of himself he is... he probably got the idea of calling Smiley when the girl said "my cousins from Hillside 13 gonna blast you fools!" INSANE character...
I agree almost 100%. I do take issue with Alonzo's rant near the end. I took it more as him pathetically lashing out knowing he is beat. He looks like he's about to start crying at the end of the rant and he's fighting back tears when he says "What a day. What a motherfucking day."
I think in the commentary it said that he chose Smiley specifically because of that question he asked in the alley. Could have easily asked any of his other contacts or subordinates for a similar payout. Just another example of how complicated and deceptive of a villain he is. This movie can be viewed in many different ways depending on your interpretation of Alonzo.
Even that scene in the car after "make sure the bathtub clean", to this day I wanna believe that he's genuinely giving Jake one last genuine chance to play ball...it's just that when Jake doubles down, Alonzo had no choice but to turn up the theatrics more than ever to make sure Jake didn't leave the car trying to blow the whistle.
its hard to believe Scott Glenn is still alive (the guy at 7:30) he was born in 1939 and has been shredded for decades he's been in quite a few good movies Fun fact: Scott Glenn played Creasy in Man on Fire (1987) then Denzel played Creasy in the remake (2004)
I love it when he say's he's "surgical" with his shotgun. The whole purpose behind using a shotgun is NOT having to be pin-point accurate. You just point it straight at the target and pull the trigger; even if you're a little off, it's still going to f*ck them up royally.
Denzel's performance in this is stellar. Alonzo had me on the edge of my seat the entire film. A man you would absolutely not mess with and scary af. The performance is so good, I still feel the same way on every re-watch.

I've had a lot of friends that were Surenos so the cholo scene hit home but fun fact about that Smileys house is actually listed as Smiley's House on maps. Their house is in Lincoln Heights which has a gang called East Side Clover which is a mostly Mexican gang now but in its early days they also had some token Irish members that had founded it hence the name but thats mostly a memory now. Oh and originall the Hillside Trece gang was going to be from the real life gang the White Fence neighborhood which fought against white sailors in the zoot suit riots but they must not have had permission but im petty sure in the original script it was Varrio White Fence and that was largely considered one of the first LA street gangs to go from just fistfights and bats and kives to actual guns and molotov cocktails. They've fought with this enemy hood Maravilla for decades since at least the 30's the only black gangs where it';s two different hoods of the same overall gang would maybe be 8 Trey Neighborhood Crips vs Rolling 60's Crips. I think that beef dates back to the 70's. It occurs to me you might not be in the west coast so i thought I;d drop some knowledge. If you ever start down the LA hood flicks more you're onna have a good time with that. Both Chicano and black gangster flicks are pretty classic from the 80's and 90's. Strangely enough not a lot of Asian gan culture represented though. But then again the biggest gang in LA is the police.

Both are fantastic/wonderful actors, and no one will ever dispute that. I just don't enjoy any of their movies though. They aren't boring; they just... aren't my thing I guess.
If Denzel would've survived the Russians...he would've ended up in Mexico as Man on Fire....lol... in order to redeem himself to humanity....lol...just fanboy'in on Denzel..he's just fucking great
I don't think Denzel's made a BAD movie :) Shit, I even like Virtuosity! (Was my introduction to Russell rowe!)
Can't wait! LETS GO!!! :D💪 😎🤘
Virtuosity is an awesome movie!! Love it!
One Of My Favorite Films
You should watch "Belly" with DMX and Nas.👍
@Devin G I love watching your videos and can you post videos of you watching Bruce Lee all his movies from the 1970s
Movie recommendation: "A Soldier's Story" featuring Denzel in a breakout role. It's an excellent film.
Denzel only allows his bad guy characters 2 endings: Dead or in jail. He doesnt do roles where the bad guy wins.
Thanks for noting that this is a re-upload.
And Howard the Duck. So bad it's good. First true Marvel movie with Stephen Spielberg and George Lucas of Star Wars fame.
What up Devin! Good movie! Eva Mendes is HOT AS F! 😍🔥🤣 lmao. Ok Big D… Time to check out *”RUDY” FROM (1993)* A little Inspiration!! 🏈🍀🇮🇪🇺🇸
Classic movie 🎥
I’d love to see you react to some gangster/hood flicks like Baby Boy, Paid In Full, Belly, etc…
The first time I watched this it was a ride.
Das what made Alonzo sinister! All the advice he was passing on was true; but his motives were wrong.... just my opinion. 💯🔥🤙🏽😎
I know he won for this, but I’m going all in on Flight…Denzel is incredible!
What up D? How have you been?? Not sure if you remember but Denzel got the Oscar for this one! Well deserved!!👊👊🏾💪💪🏾!!
American needs more central and southern American restaurants. Not just in big cities, I would like to see El Salvadorian or Peruvian restaurants in strip malls everywhere.
WOOOOOOOO SUP DEVIN HEY THIS MOVIE IS CLASSIC !!
Devin don’t remember if you’ve done it but Law abiding citizen a must see
i just noticed snoop and dr dre are in this.... weird how you notice things when your older
At the first meeting I woulda told Denzell to FO.
Not only a good movie, but they had a showing of it at the White House when Obama was in office
Been going through your backlog, great reactions my friend. You should finish the star wars movies, fuck the haters, you do you. But I totally get it if not, wars and trek fans can be toxic af.
Man you should check out a Michael Douglas film called falling down. One of the best 🤙
you gotta watch The Northman !!!!! fact, plz dont skip over it if it comes up.
Your reactions are priceless
Really wish you would check out Smokey and the Bandit 1+2. Hilarious cult classics from 70s into 80s
