Denzels' career is stellar. Everything he's in, he elevates the movie. Equalizer, inside man, flight, man on fire, american gangster, Malcom x. And of course Training Day, which is my favorite.
Random tidbit in case you missed it: Eva Mendes is not Alonzo's wife and that apartment is not his house. She's his mistress and he most likely pays for her and his illegitimate son to live there and only stops by when he wants sexual favors. Oh he definitely has something over her.. Almost no woman would be that happy and content being some dudes on-demand booty call like that... ESPECIALLY when they have a kid together.
💯. I grew up in Inglewood and my friend I grew up with was a product of that kind of relationship. His mom was Mexican and his dad was a white LAPD detective who only showed up a couple of times a month to see his mom.
So what I love about this movie is the actor who plays Smiley is actually a native Maori from New Zealand, and he's constantly cast to play a VARIETY of ethnic people and he always does his research on their dialects and culture to make sure he's portraying these people as accurately as possible. Blew my mind when I saw a supercut of his roles over the years.
Denzel just knocked the part out of the water. A well deserved Oscar. It is to mention that Eithan Hawke is holding his own and giving a very good performance too.
Ethan arguably has the more difficult part. Also, I really admire that Ethan makes interesting choices. Denzel's choices have been less than stellar over the last decade or so.
Alonzo was a dead man walking the entire movie. The Russians shot that car up without hesitation and weren't looking for a penny. His payment was his life. Period. He did all that for nothing.
"It wasn't like Denzel was playing the character, it was like the character was playing Denzel." That's a great way to put it. True acting right here. Denzel's a freaking genius. You see so many sides of Alonzo throughout the course of the movie and yet they're all so seamlessly apparent as aspects of one man's persona. On top of that you never get the sense that he's emulating anyone. He basically conjured up a whole nightmare of a psyche from scratch. It's not a simple one either. It's clear by the finale that his main obsession is control and that losing it is what finally breaks him, which is standard for movie villains, but the aggressive moralizing he does and the subtle hints that he was once a young idealist himself make him a far more interesting character.

Jake says he dropped it off at headquarters as evidence. But we learn that Jake actually kept the money. Antoine Fuqua decided to remove the scene cause he did not want to portray Jake of having been compromised and newly corrupt after his "Training Day" with Alonzo and events.

If you haven’t seen Denzel in Glory, you need to check it out. His performance earned him the supporting actor award and his part is similarly charismatic and intimidating.
Denzel was at his best! But Antoine Fuqua noted in the director’s commentary, that the movie wouldn’t have worked without Ethan Hawke, in order to make it work, it needed a rookie as believe able as Jake. Not too wise, not too weak. He had to inhabit the audience. And ultimately Jake was our moral compass 🧭

@@ΒΞΔΝ It wasn’t reading between the lines. It was seeing what you wanted to see. Denzel is my favorite actor ever since Glory came out. He was even better in that than Training Day. The only reason he didn’t get Best Actor for that was number of lines. Then what made him my favorite person in Hollywood was an interview he did where he was asked how hard it was performing a role he did to which he replied, “Acting isn’t hard work, look out your window, the guy collecting your trash has a hard job. Actors don’t!” That was an answer a long time coming. I just defended Ethan because you obviously harbor some hatred and jealousy for him and posted some undeserving disparaging comments. I don’t let BS go without pointing it out. Apparently you are a better casting director than the one for this movie. The Academy Awards aren’t as good as you either. Denzel won for this but Ethan shouldn’t even have been nominated for his role, according to you. Or three more times? Conundrum: How are you so much smarter than everyone else, and a “thespian whisperer”, yet still a nobody? I am done with your dumbas$. I broke the rule: “Never argue with an idiot. What’s even more special about this film is the small little things you notice when you rewatch it. Like in the scene after they kill Robert, in the car, Alonzo is speaking on the phone and you can hear him say “make sure the tub is clean” I think you know what that is referencing…
Denzel's performance becomes better and better with every additional viewing of this movie. I notice how much of what happens in the 3rd act of the movie is set up from very beginning of the movie.
After all these years, I'm still not sure if Alonzo was being honest or not about Jake cleaning things up from the inside. That's how good Denzel's performance was.
Right. I think Alonzo had a split second of clarity/regret for the path he took. You hear Rodger tell him that he was just like Jake when they’re sitting in his house. But then it could just be more manipulation.
I've probably watched this movie at least 7 or 8 times in my life... and it's all because of how Denzel just owns every scene he's in. Stone cold killer.
You should consider watching Street Kings because it’s almost like an alternate world where Alonzo & Jake keep it going. Keanu Reeves plays a veteran cop who bends the rules and Forest Whitaker plays his Captain(?) who’s as corrupt as Alonzo so it’s almost like the Training Day characters in the future 🤣 The movie was even directed by David Ayer who wrote Training Day!
It's funny how we know Ayer wrote Training Day. But he wrote the screenplay for another film that came out months earlier that was a smash. It was The Fast and The Furious. Somehow most people forget about that.
This was terry Cruz's first movie, he was on set as Denzels body guard and then the last scene came up and they asked him if he wanted to be in the movie, he later said he wasn't even paid extra
I love how you're spending the entire movie trying to reconcile and rationalize that Alonzo is somehow the good guy in all this. Denzel was brilliant here.
Besides this and both Equalizers, Antoine Fuqua also directed Tears of the Sun, Shooter and The Magnificent Seven remake; other great crime action thrillers are Street Kings, We Own The Night and End of Watch
After all these years I just realised why that dealer followed the 'best players.' The dirt bag was looking to get them hooked. Awesome reaction/review mate 👍😄
Love Denzel as an actor. He had many great films like Book of Eli, American Gangster, and Flight. Loved his role in Taking of Pelham 123, even though the movie was cheesy imo. Just a great actor no matter what role he plays, villain or hero.
This is a movie that requires multiple viewings, you will alot of subtle details the first time around. When you watch it again you will look at certain scenes in a different light knowing Alonzo planned everything to set up Jake . Down to his dialogue makes it difficult to tell when he is being honest or trying to manipulate Jake. Alonzo is such a layered character
5 other Denzel Washington perfomances you gotta see are ''A Soldier's Story'' (1984), ''Glory'' (1989), ''Malcolm X'' (1992), ''Devil in a Blue Dress'' (1995) with also an standout performance by Don Cheadle as ''Mouse'' and ''Man on Fire'' (2004). P.E.ace from overseas, the Netherlands.
I absolutely love that ending! I was sweating the whole time, but also, this is what happens still, cops like Alonzo do anything not just for money but for power, in my country Mexico, you can trust anyone but the police 😢 the chemistry between Ethan and Denzel was perfect! Looooove your reaction! I wonder if you have watched the movie “Sicario” it will 🤯 your mind!
I was a huge fan of Denzel before this film, after I was an even bigger fan. For me, this is his gold standard. Definitely in the highest echelon of actors.
The acting of Ethan Hawk is nothing less than phenomenal. When Denzel puts the gun to Ethans head you can look in his eyes and literally see his life flashing by. 100/10 Edit: spelling
btw, the scene after they did a hit squad on roger, when he's going back to denzel's car, you can see him on the phone setting up the hit at the ese's house.
Denzel looks and sounds the same in a lot of his movies. What made this performance stand out was a completely different personality taking over. It's like our host mentioned - it was the dirty cop playing Denzel. He did fantastic. It was also one of Ethan Hawk's better performances. He gets cast in roles that don't suit him very well, but this one as a rookie cop was perfect. Well done. Great movie. Eve Mendez was hot!
I used to think Denzel was the second greatest film actor of our generation. Now that Daniel Day Lewis has apparently retired, however, I think that puts Washington in the #1 spot - between this, Fences, Flight, American Gangster, Philadelphia....just wow.
He was awesome as Macbeth in Joel Coen's new movie too! I didn't realise till reading about it after that he's classically trained and started in theatre.
Why? He was going to get killed Anyway and Alonzo was willing to give the money to the Russians and fix it after killing mob in Las Vegas but no also I won't say deserve to die but he had it coming
Funny when I showed this movie to my dad (he’s a cop in Chicago) within the first 10 minutes of the movie he said “he’s a corrupt cop” but the real ones are less flashy.
This movie introduced Denzels OG Pimp swagga walking style to the world. Another epic Denzel movie is Crimson Tide with Gene Hackman.. That movie was fking edge of your seat shit dude..
A truly epic film all around. Exceptional performances, writing and directing by everyone involved. Easily one of my favorite cop/crime films along with the original Dirty Harry. Am glad I got to see it on the big screen as a sneak preview back in October 2001. Hard to believe it's been over 20 years now.

The actors that always play good guys in every movie most of they're careers , always play that one role as the villian & it's always they're best role because of that one reason alone💯 just like Leonardo DiCaprio plays the good guy in every movie but when I found out he was gonna play the bad guy in Django Unchained , I knew I had to see it for that one reason alone & I didn't care about the movie itself because I already knew that was gonna make the movie special & he murdered that role same with Joe Pesci in Goodfellas & Lawrence Fishburn in King Of New York & Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight 💯 The really famous actors that always play those good guys roles in all they're films , always murder that one role that they finally play in as the bad guy & that's why ppl like those villians so much in movies because they're so used to seeing them playing good guys in every movie & never playing a bad guy so if u see a good guy actor that u really like & he's gonna finally be playing the villian in a movie , u know it's gonna be a phenomenal performance even if the movie ain't all that great💯 that's why I wanted to see this movie so bad when it first came out in 01' cuz Denzel never did that villian role before in a film at the point in time in his career & he was already a huge star from playing good guys before that so yeah all those good guy actors that played in all those movies that I named as the bad guy , is they're best roles!!!! Each & every single one of them!!!! Hands down & all of them actors got either a Oscar or a Oscar nomination for that one villian role they all did so yeah!!!!

In the category of 'Best Actor in an Supporting Role'.
@@k.delpino1124 should've specified "leading role" my mistake
@@k.delpino1124 basically, the whole point of my post was to highlight that he obviously should've won for Malcolm X. Don't get me wrong, I love Pacino but let's be real now... Denzel deserved it.
Great performance in : Man on Fire , Richochet , Hurricane and John Q.
Was ROBBED for Malcolm x
You know how hard i laughed when he gave her the Chinese menu instead of the warrant. Lmao hahaha
If you haven’t seen Denzel in Glory, you need to check it out. His performance earned him the supporting actor award and his part is similarly charismatic and intimidating.
Here are some other "Rogue" Cop movies that are definitely worth watching- A Man Apart, Smoking Aces 1+2, WAR, Bullet To The Head, and Den of Thieves.
Bad Lieutenant!!
Don't forget Narc from Joe Carnahan with Jason Patric and Ray Liotta
Denzel was at his best! But Antoine Fuqua noted in the director’s commentary, that the movie wouldn’t have worked without Ethan Hawke, in order to make it work, it needed a rookie as believe able as Jake. Not too wise, not too weak. He had to inhabit the audience. And ultimately Jake was our moral compass 🧭
Nice way of saying Ethan Hawke is a terrible actor, but was all they could afford, and did ok in this film.
@@ΒΞΔΝ Is that what got from that comment? Your comprehensive reading skills are at third grade level, then. I feel bad for ya.
@@frankiek2269 It was reading between the lines, nothing to do with comprehension. I feel bad for someone who gets offended by their fav actor being disliked. Third grade emotional control. A third graders name as well....Frankie...what man goes by Frankie?
I'm better at this than you, stay in your lane.
He was a moron compass
They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.”
I'll never forget seeing it in the theatres and was like... I need to see it again. Classic.
This movie is a total masterpiece imo it was so shocking when it first came out and just held you from the beginning to the end
Denzel is a total G
After all these years, I'm still not sure if Alonzo was being honest or not about Jake cleaning things up from the inside. That's how good Denzel's performance was.
Right. I think Alonzo had a split second of clarity/regret for the path he took. You hear Rodger tell him that he was just like Jake when they’re sitting in his house. But then it could just be more manipulation.
a corrupted cop supporting the cleaning up of corruption? no. denzel is only good in this because people don't know/see reality.
Absolutely amazing film! Denzel and Ethan played it to perfection. Stone cold classic movie.
I've probably watched this movie at least 7 or 8 times in my life... and it's all because of how Denzel just owns every scene he's in. Stone cold killer.
It's crazy because the protagonist was chilling with the antagonist the whole movie.
That sounds awesome
Also has Hugh Laurie, which is always a plus !
It's funny how we know Ayer wrote Training Day.
But he wrote the screenplay for another film that came out months earlier that was a smash.
It was The Fast and The Furious.
Somehow most people forget about that.
Bro Street King's is a classic and barely talked about
Also Harsh Times with Cristian Bale is a David Ayer film that takes place in this universe
Denzel won an Oscar for this didn't he? I cant remember. I freaking love this movie! More people need to react to it.
He did.
It was actually his 2nd Oscar win.
The first was for Glory (1989).
“I’m surgical w/ dis bitch, Hoyt!” 💯🔥😎😂
This was terry Cruz's first movie, he was on set as Denzels body guard and then the last scene came up and they asked him if he wanted to be in the movie, he later said he wasn't even paid extra
If a cop start playing "Still Dre" when he gets in his car, you know he's crooked 🤣
Saving that girl in the alley got Jake LIFE insurance.
Man on Fire is definitely worth checking out. It's a surprisingly powerful movie.
This film is a masterpiece. Probably my favorite on-screen performance by Denzel, right in front of Man On Fire.
Definitely one of my favorite movies ever. If you live in LA you have to watch this.
I love how you're spending the entire movie trying to reconcile and rationalize that Alonzo is somehow the good guy in all this. Denzel was brilliant here.
This reaction was the BEST! So authentic
Fallen is another gem by Denzel and is also criminally underrated
Think thats the greatest thing about Denzel’s performance. He makes you like and agree with him while he’s the antagonist the whole time!
Love Denzel as an actor. He had many great films like Book of Eli, American Gangster, and Flight. Loved his role in Taking of Pelham 123, even though the movie was cheesy imo. Just a great actor no matter what role he plays, villain or hero.
Denzel Washington with John Lithgow - RICOCHET (1991) is playing on HBOMAX
"What you want to beat them up ? Go ahead , get down protect and serve brother."
Fallen and John Q. very underrated Denzel movies
Informer: It's going to be a long day.
Me: Oh you have no idea how long this day's going to get.
I watched Training Day in the vhs days and damn Denzel killed this role
I never saw Denzel in a movie as a bad dude before, and was blown away
I hearing the commentary that Antoine Fuqua described Alonzo is basically The Devil. Makes him so effectively scary and charming
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I knew you would. It's a shame that they don't make movies this good anymore. Hollywood is so different now. Smh
Edit: spelling
A lot of his fans were upset. Because Denzel won the award after playing a villian.
btw, the scene after they did a hit squad on roger, when he's going back to denzel's car, you can see him on the phone setting up the hit at the ese's house.
Denzel could legitimate play any film character ever. I mean he could be Indiana Jones and id buy it even after knowing Harrison Ford.
Denzel’s unbelievable, I absolutely love his performance!!!! 🤩♥️
No one mentions Flight as you did, and I thought that was a great film.
@@travisstrickland7270 I think Flight may be his best performance.
Awesome Movie and Work Bro, Thanks 👍👍👍 Greetings from Helsinki, Finland 🇫🇮🇺🇸🇫🇮🇺🇸
The female drug dealer they robbed was portrayed by Macy Gray. Awesome singer
This movie teaches you 2 things..
1. Don't mess with Russians
2. No matter the scenario, always have more contingencies planned
Why? He was going to get killed Anyway and Alonzo was willing to give the money to the Russians and fix it after killing mob in Las Vegas but no also I won't say deserve to die but he had it coming
I always thought Denzel a older person actor but this role was so gangster i loved him since
Funny when I showed this movie to my dad (he’s a cop in Chicago) within the first 10 minutes of the movie he said “he’s a corrupt cop” but the real ones are less flashy.
This should have gotten Denzel Oscar number 3 or 4. The man is an absolute beast with his acting skills second to none.
Ay man, this is the.. third video I've seen from you. Great content and reactions man, you got a new subscriber here
Denzil is a legend
If you haven't seen it, American Gangster is one of his best movies. Training Day ofc the most iconic, but American Gangster is so underrated.
Agreed, I preferred his performance in that movie.
This movie introduced Denzels OG Pimp swagga walking style to the world. Another epic Denzel movie is Crimson Tide with Gene Hackman.. That movie was fking edge of your seat shit dude..
Okay, alright, alright, alright. I've already watched some of your videos. But after this video I had to subscribe. Good work. Keep it up.
A truly epic film all around. Exceptional performances, writing and directing by everyone involved. Easily one of my favorite cop/crime films along with the original Dirty Harry.
Am glad I got to see it on the big screen as a sneak preview back in October 2001. Hard to believe it's been over 20 years now.
this movie is so badass. this is a case where NOBODY could have been casted better than Denzel for this character.
So stoked to see someone react to this!
This is such a great movie. I really love your channel and enjoy your reaction and commentary very much. Greetings from Stuttgart, Germany 😀
just to add to the musicians as actors in this movie, the lady they rob is Macy Gray
Great reaction! This film is great and Denzel’s performance is phenomenal. The man was scary. I agree with you that he is basically evil Batman with a gun 😂
My dad took me to see this in theaters with him when I was 13. It was legendary.
King Kong ain't got sh,.$ on me! Denzel did so much research on this role. You wanna go to jail or you wanna go home. He picked that up from actual undercovers. Well deserved Oscar. Awesome reaction as always, thank you.
Wow, that scene with roger before they execute him, i have only ever seen the UK/EU version and that dialogue about slaves and killing someone on duty isn't it.
The version i have seen with a different edit is better than the on here but it still interesting to see slightly different versions.
I've seen this movie a dozen times, and I never noticed Terry Crews is in this lol. Great movie, thanks for the reaction! This is the performance that made me a Denzel fan when I was a kid.
Crews' first scene in TD was actually as the shirtless dude clapping up the pigeons on the roof in the jungle.
This was his first film.
he was between jobs.
Going from pro football to doing security and then getting more roles.
@@k.delpino1124 Legit the first time I remember seeing him was in The Longest Yard. With all the cheeseburger puns lol. Cause he was one of the only parts of the movie I liked. I'm so happy that dude found success, he seems like the nicest guy. Plus super charismatic and entertaining.
I remember watching this movie in theaters, sadly it was in the aftermath of 9/11 and movie theaters were almost empty.
Great movie and actors. I agree that you gotta be a great actor when the audience likes you but you're THE BAD GUY.
I put Denzel's performance along with Michael Douglas in WALL STREET, likable corrupt bad dudes.
