@@JamesVSCinema Strangely, this seems to be one of those movies/series that falls through the cracks. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it mentioned in comments as something that people ask for reactions to. Like you said, they’re such great movies (the third one is awesome as well) that it’s kind of surprising.

@@carlrowland3757 It was originally done as a trilogy. The other two were added much later, and imo, don’t measure up to the earlier films. The Bourne Identity, Supremacy, and Ultimatum were originally novels by Robert Ludlum. It was a trilogy. After his death, someone else added onto the original stories.

The words you're looking for to describe Jason Bourne's elusiveness is “situational awareness."
That’s what sets him apart. He’s hardly ever running just briskly but calmly walking and grabbing simple items he can use to escape. He doesn’t waste his energy trying to fight every person in his way.
Marie floating off into darkness is so haunting, a real gut punch.
Really makes you want to see Jason take them all down.
Just give the man a box of pens and a magazine subscription and he's got this
The Bourne movies are by far the most realistic and gritty in their genre. He is amazing at what he does but not made out to be super human, when he gets hurt you really feel it. Thanks James, these are some of my favourite movies and remind me of a special time in my life.

Back at you James. Even if you don't react to the other movies past Ultimatum I highly recommend watching them when you can. It's worth watching how they made these movies too in the dvd extras, really interesting.

I felt the Bourne series effectively carved out its own sub-genre of "realistic spy film", sorta the way Gundam and Patlabor formed the "real robot" subgenre of mecha anime and departed from the until-then "super robot" genre. The Bond franchise definitely had movies that were more grounded, but from Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice, and especially into the Roger Moore era, the stories became regularly almost fantastical.
That's a good explanation of why my mind always links the Bourne movies to the Burn Notice TV show even though they're tonal opposites.
This franchise has the best one-on-one fights since 007 took out Red Grant in from Russia With (Tanks) Love! The editing puts you inside the fights. In his “spy movie” Hitchcock said he wanted to show how hard it was to kill a man with brute force; Matt Damon really shows that.

The "real" doesn't refer to the feasibility of the physics or technology-it still relies on suspension of disbelief for the audience to accept such "unrealistic" technology exists-it describes to how humans, nations/political groups, and the world would make use of such technologies were they to exist, how they would use them economically, militarily, and politically, and thus the social and cultural repercussions, as well as technological constraints that would still exist. So "real" as in literary realism.

@@Comrade.Question Burn Notice is like a deeper exploration of all the skills it takes to be Bourne but without a lot of the mysticism created by the mystery. Michael Weston feels more human than Bourne does doing similar things, because you have more insight into his head and thought process while Bourne's entire style is meant to signal "automatic"
But you see in the later seasons he was an absolute monster in the field in a way he just doesn't let out anymore for his own conscience. He is very comparable in skill level to Bourne but is really good at hiding it behind covers.
My favourite of the trilogy. Really gets into the background of the character and it's not pretty. Bourne's body is almost broken by the end of this film, but he's closer than ever to knowing who he once was and who he is now. It's a very intelligent film for this genre and it's shot so damn well. That opening. That chase through Moscow. His confession / monologue. I don't think action films get any better than this.
Once Paul Greengrass joined the franchise (starting with this movie), the Bourne movies starts to get more intense with his hand-held camera style. It’s epic 🎥
@CYB3R2K30 I can understand where you're coming from, I generally hate it. But I really thinks it's used well in these movies and suits the claustrophobic and chaotic nature of these fight scenes
'The Accountant' with Ben Affleck is a pretty good one in this sub genre too.

I saw this movie at a theatre in Springfield, MO, which is about 10 miles north of Nixa, MO. When she tells Jason he was born in Nixa, the whole theatre got quiet for a moment and then burst out into cheers!

The director (Paul Greengrass) said that is what it means. It was a metaphor to his past. He chose the exit (aka light) to escape the darkness of his past.
The Machinist also had a light and dark moment like this.

Run Lola Run. I've no idea if anyone has recommended this yet but it's all Franke Potente in a German film that is perfect for someone like you who works with the stylistic and film elements of a movie. Can't recommend it highly enough
YAAAAASSSS!!!! SO good!!! Franke Potente is excellent in it as well as a unique, excellent story.
There is a really great "behind the scenes" about the car chase scenes. The stunt crew invented a whole new system for pulling off the chases and being able to film Matt Damon in the drivers seat through it all. You should check it out. This is a great series and I'm happy that you are doing the whole trilogy (or maybe more).

Yes, but they are not exactly so mighty like Bourne as seen in this movie. Moreover, SAC also recruits from tier 2 units as well such as Green Berets, Navy SEALs and Force Recons. Although Force Recons are not part of SOCOM, many have considered them tier 2 due to their specialized skills and capabilities.
Yeah "chaotic" is a great way to describe the editing/camera work 😆 Think Paul Greengrass is one of the very few directors who can get away with/knows how to effectively use "shaky cam". Problem is far too many mediocre copycat filmmakers poorly copied his style after this film.
I always hated how people would use Bourne scenes as the example of quick cut fight scenes bc it works so well in this compared to contemporary uses.
Every JB fight scenes you know where they are what's around them and which physical attacks are landing.
All of which are missing in most other uses of this technique in action.
The car chase scene in Ronin is said to have inspired the Bourne chases. You should definitely check that flick out sometime soon. Can't go wrong with DeNiro, Reno, Bean, and more!
Yeah, don't sleep on Ronin, it's such a bareknuckle action thriller.

I hope you not only do the trilogy, but also the last Bourne movie with Matt Damon from 2016. This is probably my favorite movie series.

Franka Potente, Bourne's girlfriend in the first two movies, made a very good movie before all of this, it's called Run Lola Run. A really good watch.

Fun fact:Matt did all of his own fight scenes but car crashes and some falling scenes were done by a stunt man- David Leitch (John Wick, Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde director). Much love man ❤️
This film has so much rewatchabilty. Not just because it's awesome but you can pick stuff up in the backround on a second watch, like you can see a poster advertising the protest he uses to grab nikki from the tram
IMHO, the Jason Bourne franchise was the first and is the very best of this genre.

One of my favorite fantasies, is listening to the Bourne series soundtrack while walking through an airport! Lol. Don't knock it until you've tried it!
I love how everyone thinks they are after Bourne, when in reality its the other way around.
He never would have come after them if they had left him alone.
Paul Greengrass’s camera isn't chaotic; it moves like a human eye, flicking from subject to subject in a series of saccades.
In the final chase we see Bourne look up, cut to a road sign, then back to Bourne; he's confused, lost, and is looking for directions. We get that understanding in seconds.
This is really a trilogy that gets better with each film. Legacy and just Bourne aren't near as good, but these first three escalate, which is super rare for films. Glad you're continuing this. Plus, Judge Dredd/Billy Butcher is in this!

Yes! Please continue the trilogy type series. It does them justice when you watch the series of movies that portray the full picture of the story they were trying to tell. I would love for you to continue your Lethal Weapon journey as well!

Yes the longer car chase of ronin and this are similar because the violins and trumpets of the composers they are very intenser in the chase , and the protagonist breathe when they crashed with another car

It's a small note, but what I really loved about the Bourne films is that they weren't explosive or obnoxious like we've come to expect. The car chases were smash, crash and crunch - a visceral sequence of drama that didn't have ridiculous flipping around and blowing up. It added such a sense of realism to the whole chase, following a thread of slick, professional cinema throughout the trilogy. Some of my absolute favourite movies, and the soundtrack is enough to draw out the secret agent we all wish we could be!
Everytime you said "I love this character," I gave a knowing, sad smile.
Enemy of the State (1998) is worth watching. It has some lovely spy-craft elements.

You've gotta also check out bourne legacy with Jeremy Renner. It gets hate but I think it's really underrated.
Bourne is freaking chaos in human form. The man is a one person wrecking crew. And yes, the car chase in this is one of the most insane ever put to film. It's just bonkers. It's raw and brutal where so many car chases feel like a dance. No, this felt like just destruction and desperation from everyone.

I gave Robert Ludlum some of his Radiation treatments in the late 90s and he talked about the planning of making the first movie. I asked who would be playing Bourne and he said they want to use some young actor named Matt Damon. He gave us all signed books. Really nice man. R.I.P.

You'd honestly be surprised by how much of a beating most cars can take.
I used to go to some stock car races at a clay racetrack in Sycamore, IL. Every other weekend they'd have a smash-up derby where the last car able to move, wins. This was before cash-for-clunkers, so there were still a lot of huge old cars from the '60's and '70's which could be bought up for next to nothing and brought to places like Sycamore for their last hurrah. One time there was a derby with 2 giant Caddilacs, a host of similar but slightly smaller cars, and one sad looking mid-size station wagon from the mid '80's. The derby went as usual, the Caddys were tearing everything up as many had expected, and one of them literally tore the entire back half off of the little station wagon. The driver could literally have reached behind his seat and touched the ground. Then there came a moment at the end where the two Caddy drivers spotted each other lined up among the wrecks, and they charged right at each other, crashing with a huge explosion of radiator steam. The older one, actually from the '60's, clearly got the better of the exchange, but both were still running. Unfortunately they had somehow gotten locked together, so neither could pull away from the other. It looked like it would finish in an unprecedented tie, but then the sad little station wagon with the back half torn off fired up his engine one last time and floored it. It was actually front wheel drive, and he managed to drag himself a couple feet with the motor screaming, which was good enough for the win. Lol I just hadta share.

I'm glad you're reacting to these amazing movies!! You had the exact same reaction when Marie died so early in the movie as I did. Much like making a good cake, you have to break a few eggs. Same with great stories, some of the best drama's...not everyone makes it until the end of the movie or TV show.
I believe the premise of the fights is you have one or two handheld cameramen trying to get the personal up close shots between two people fighting while also capturing the moves, but this is spontaneous, so they don't know where things are going.
If you want another Matt Damon film to see his full range, check out The Adjustment Bureau... A total classic. One of my favorite sci fi romance movies... Anyway, great reaction.

Everyone that has already watched this movie: Well this is awkward....
The first is still my favorite for the girl and the humanity she brought to the story, and because the action is slightly more grounded. The chaotic editing of Greengrass goes too far for me; the fights here begin to lose their spatial sense. However Supremacy and Ultimatum are still magnetic experiences that I enjoy. For Supremacy I especially like that Bourne apologizes to the daughter of the people he killed. How often do you see an action hero ask for forgiveness for a victim of their action?
Man, i saw how that confession scene caught everybody off guard. The theater went very silent at that moment!
My favourite of the all the Bourne movies, and the best soundtrack as well.

There is also “The Bourne Legacy”, which chronicles another agent played by Jeremy Renner. He’s a product of the same program as Jason Bourne. No Matt Damon in that one. But then there is the film “Jason Bourne” where Matt Damon returns, and discovers dark secrets about the genesis of the program, which hits very close to home.
I love the weight Marie's death brings to this movie. She was such an awesome character and to lose her so suddenly and so early, it gave everything a gravity in this movie that I don't think it would have had she been alive. She was Jason's world in the first movie. She gave him hope and life and the ability to feel human. And to have her ripped away was just soul crushing. Grief was as big as an antagonist in this movie as any of the bad guys.

Yes! I love these first two movies in the series. Fast paced, great editing. He's like a walking, fighting computer/machine. I don't know how much of the fight scenes are real and what portion of them are CGI. GREAT REACTION.
I really like the ending where he tells the girl that her parents didn't died the way she thinks. Now she can move on knowing her mom didn't kill her dad in some kind way.
Matt Damon did indeed do his own stunts in the Bourne movies
After watching Jason Bourne running at Palolem beach, I always wanted to visit there and once I did, I ran there with Jason Bourne theme music in my earphone. It was a pilgrimage of sort.
That German actress is in an amazing movie called Run Lola Run, that you’d love.
Took a trip to Germany a few years back and stayed at a hotel that was just a short walk from the bridge where the foot chase took place. So I did a little Bourne tour of the area and retraced his steps. I also like the first movie the best, though the whole series is good, including the spin-off Bourne Legacy, with Jeremy Renner.

The part of this trilogy that I love the most are the locations. It's not some ritzy LA/NYC trope, it's in places we rarely see in movies - Berlin, India, Russia, etc. It feels way more real than a Bond movie.

Ultimatum is the last in the original trilogy, but there are two more movies in the series: the Borne Legacy (starring Jeremy Renner) and the last movie is simply Jason Borne.

Fantastic reaction as always! There's actually a fourth movie with Matt Damon, Jason Bourne (2016) It came out after The Bourne Legacy (2012) (which starred Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, and is only loosely related to the Jason Bourne world, but I felt still worth a watch).
A lot of people don't realize that closing scene in this is actually used in the 3rd movie too where she gives him the wrong birthday
Two remarks about bourne. In Supremacy there is a fight scene in an apartment. Bourne gets his face smashed into a cabinet. One shelf was made of brakaway glass,... but while filming the glass didn’t brake... ouch
And as a suggestion with a somewhat similar energy, you may want to check out: enemy of the state (with Will Smith and Gene Hackman)
In the car chase, the taxis are the old Lada cars, which were ridiculed in the west for their bulky, clunky, overbuilt designs. They were rough, but cheap, and consequently they were like a tank and could take a beating, so it’s not entirely unbelievable.
It’s hard to see because of the editing, but what Jason did in the car chase at the end when he was shooting at the Jeep, he was shooting at the wheel so it would flatten and turn the jeep in front of him, and let him pin the jeep in front of him with his bonnet of his car. Once it was there, he floored it and drove the jeep side-on straight into a central dividing barrier of an off ramp exit. When he did this, he leant head down on the steering wheel, as Lada’s are such an old car they did not have airbags, so he basically prevented himself fro being thrown out the windscreen or his head being smashed against the steering wheel by already having his head against it.
warch to"To Live and Die in LA" its ridiculously underated. and fits Bourne, but also Nightcrawler and Collateral.

Well, since on this track, I highly recommend that you don't only do the trilogy, but includes the fourth Bourne movie, Jason Bourne from 2016.
Enjoying these reactions immensely, thank you. Once you are done with Bourne, there are a couple of films in the same genre, but very different stylistically that I think you would enjoy greatly. An older school film is Three Days of the Condor with Redford and Dunaway, set in the 70’s. It’s fascinating to see what was “leading edge” technology in the story back then. And then 4 years prior to Bourne there was Ronin with De Niro. You talk about car chases … that film is a master class. And excellent espionage as well.

I love all the JB's! Jason Bourne, James Bond, and my favorite is Jack Bauer from 24. If you've never seen the TV show 24, it's awesome. Give it a watch sometime. Season 5 is the best.
The actress who played Marie is the famous german actress Franka Potente. If your interested in more of her work, check out the german classic "Lola rennt".
I always felt like Supremacy is the weakest of the trilogy, but it's still really good. It's also nice to see Bourne off the leash. Marie did kind of hamper him a bit since he had to slow down for her to keep up rather than being as smooth as he is in this movie. The third one is just as good as the first. Maybe a little better. Although I think the shaky cam was dialed up a little too much in both the second and third. They fight scenes in particular could have done with being a little less frenetic.
Love the track at the end of the film. The end is as important as the start.
