Well my Tuesday suddenly got less productive. Thanks for all the videos, here and on the other channel. I'm waiting for the big yellow elephant in the room to make it's return to our screens.
All three side by side looks like a scene from a Star Wars droid factory circa 1977. Great job love seeing old stuff brought back to life and still be useful.
There is sooo much dry humor is your videos it almost makes me cry. 😂 Every time your wife makes an appearance or is referred to I think in my head about the white knuckle recovery service! Killin me smalls… Thank you…
Cracking job Wes didn’t know you had a second channel will check it out I think your welding looks good and painting not so bad either looks cold over there hopefully wether warms up soon take care to you all 👍🔧🔧🔧👌
@@baggerbegger There is a lot of room for stuff like that, but the problem is the warranties. You have to be confident enough to not get comebacks all day every day because you couldn't fix it right... You could still do board work and the like, but gotta be sure you know what to do and that is a specialty business especially when there are no schematics.
I used to torment a co-worker calling him a module swapper. He had 20 years on me but never figgered it out. Oh well. and this was in the late eighties.
Around where I live Airgas came in and bought everybody. And yes, they are a screw job. A smaller regional company called Maine Oxy came in, I switched and can't say enough good about them. Great to deal with and prices are reasonable.
I sold my gas computer to AirGas. Great deal for me horrible for my customers. When buying a tank make sure there is no company names stamped or molded in or on the tank.
Airgas is absolutely awful, I'd drive 30 minutes out of my way to go to the praxair place over them. Not that they were better on price, but definitely better on service. Nowadays I don't weld much, so I eat the cost of tank swaps at the farm store. Less hassle and I usually run out of gas at 7pm on a saturday anyways, and both of the welding shops within an hour of me close at 4pm.
You are correct. I was unaware of your second channel but despite its hidden status it’s already bigger than my first! Lol Looking forward to the projects .
For those of us without a solder pump you can put a little of that liquid flux on the solder wick before you try to desolder. Helps the wick to draw in the old solder.
To clear solder from plated through-holes that refuse to give up easily: Dip the corner of your wick end into the offending hole, then lay the side of your iron tip on top of the wick and gently squash the wick down against the board. The idea is to get at least a couple strands of wick down far enough to actually touch the offending solder. Cut a fresh end on your wick & dip the last 1/4" or so in liquid flux before each attempt for best results. If a through-hole still refuses to clear even with this method, the problem is almost always insufficient heat transfer from the iron tip to the wick and solder. Raising the iron's temperature generally does NOT improve things at this point; it will mostly just nuke the flux faster (very counterproductive). What you want instead is more thermal mass and a larger effective contact patch transferring heat from the iron into the wick. In other words, switch to the biggest chisel tip you've got that you can fit into the available space on the board.
I don’t know why, but when that Miller welder responded correctly by increasing the engine speed to weld it brought a smile to my face. So great to have the correct parts.
always enjoyed checking the Proof dates on the O2 bottles. they last forever it seems. had one show up in our shop with it's first proof stamp back in 1917! still worked...
I always got a kick out of finding bottles with small squares stamped in them (a square consisting of four smaller squares, tipped up on one corner)... Just imagine a swastika with the open ends filled in - which is exactly what it was.... Thousands were brought back to the U.S. during WWII.
oh buddy are you ever right about welding gas I'm a welder in Alaska and i feel like I'm constantly being taken advantage off its outrageous. Honestly your videos are second to none thanks for the entertainment.
As far as the welding tanks are concerned, you are so right. I bought a set of oxy/acetylene tanks off Craigslist and after stopping at a place right up the road from me I was told I had to drive an hour away to get my tanks filled.I did spend a fortune at the same shop up the street buying a tank for my new Tig welder but you are right it’s a cartel.
Amen on the welding gas. I worked at a place that would send me to fill their tanks and even with an account and "owning" the tanks it was an ordeal. Praxair bought out most places.
You are right about the "welding gas cartel" Wes lol. The only arc welding gas I buy is 100% argon for my TIG and it had gone up $%&)FCKrr % in the last 2 yrs. I use self shielded flux core wire on my small wire feed [fake MIG] welder. The rest of my heavier steel welding is good old stick SMAW. My cousin has a XMT 304 and you are right on about it. That powercon is a great welder. That idle control is needed to save GAS $ and engine wear $ and your hearing lol!
Came home from another less than inspiring day at work to learn one of my favorite TH-camrs has started a second channel. Maybe today isn't so bad after all. Thanks, Wes!

Wes's Welder Warren! Glad that purchase worked out so well for you. I've seen computer techs with way less skills than you on the electronics repairs. Thanks as always.
I love old welders, I have fond memories of the old 1949 P&H welder I was given and hauled home from Wilmer Tx. It had a V4 Wisconsin for power, had a rod through the block. I procured another and let me tell you after much cleaning it worked great. Yes it was Only stick welding. It would burn a rod big as your little finger. IT WOULD MAKE A HALF ASSED WELDER SUCH AS MYSELF LOOK LIKE A PRO. THICK STUFF, HEAVY NO PROBLEM.JUST CRANK IT UP SOME. UPHILL, DOWN HILL OVERHEAD. YEA I LOOKED GOOD AS I ONLY HAD A CRACKER BOX PREV.
Hey Wes, when you're using that desoldering braid, flux it! It'll make it so much easier. I also like cleaning boards before and after working on them with some 90%+ iso alcohol using one of those push-top alcohol dispensers and some acid brushes. For anybody else reading this that struggles with soldering, clean what you're working on really well with alcohol, use flux on the joints you're soldering/desoldering, and keep your tip clean! For the last one, get a brass sponge and some tip tinner. Guaranteed good results.
I would use the biggest chisel end in the iron too. Seems dumb but it works well getting heat in quickly without heating up everything else over time. Use it all the way down to SMDs sizes. I used to hate solder wick too till I started fluxing everything after watching Louis Rossmann. Everyone should have a desoldering station, invaluable for through holes.
When I was a pipe welder/ fitter we used to fight over the powcon welder. They were the smoothest welding machine around. When welding xray good arc stability was crucial. This was 30 years ago, I'm sure better equipment is available now, but in its day they were awesome machines.

tip, when removing through hole take iron first add new solder on connection then use the sucker that way you are pretty much sucking fresh solder makes things easier imo. and always use sucker to remove its less of a pain in the ass then trying to heat up pull the leg out then have to go back in with wick.
Great work with the stick welding. I learned to weld with a cheapo Lincoln coffin box years before I ever heard of a MIG. I think it made me a better welder. Not sure why stick gets frowned upon so much these days. It still works great for a lot of applications.
I had myself chuckling... thinking how funny it would be if you built that stand at the end......but without using a single piece of the new equipment. 😂 😂 Idk why but it had me laughing thinking about it.
My late father bought some oxy/acetylene tanks from the US Navy back in the 70s. Used them for years until sometime in the late 90s when our usual supplier retired and air gas came to town shirtly there after, then all of a sudden they were useless. Something something about still being stamped government property.
Hey Wes! Just a suggestion on removing components from the board. Use a de-soldering wick to remove the solder from the board. That way, you won't put too much heat on the board & lift the tabs.
About 55 years ago my parents bought a very early (for the UK) colour TV and shortly after it arrived, an engineer appeared to carry out some safety mods. Some caps wired to the base of the display were subject to failure if the tube flashed over (25kv) and unfortunately tended to explode. The fix was to fit modified caps which had a plastic wrap to contain the resulting damage ! Must admit that I had heard of the reputation of your problem caps - maybe some shrink-wrap would have been enough of a fix :)
Thank you so much for getting that PowCon running beautifully! The 2007 Suzuki Eiger, 400 is all ready for the trade. We just need to set up a time and we’re good to go. Thanks, Wes.
I think you should use flux on the desoldering side as well. Flux while desoldering might have saved your plated thru hole. Alcohol for flux cleanup. Always nice to see old equipment brought back on line.

I have around 25 bottles total between the truck, garage, farm, and my parents place and I can confirm that Matheson is the best I've deal with. They won't take everything, but they will take anything under a certain size and anything with a slick neck. They have a list of companies that have been bought up or are out of business that they accept bigger bottles from too. Last time I saw them bring it out it was about 4 pages long

I stumbled across Gathering Dust and have enjoyed that content almost as much as I like to "watch Wes Work". I know everyone here is glad you don't charge for watching and making suggestions.
We usually had a helper to adjust your heat while welding and you could tell him up or down while you welded. I also had a couple jobs where an inspector watched your amperage (duplex mainly) and would shut you down if you exceeded recommend parameters. Same guys that tried to teach you to weld on a chalkboard. Good times. Great machines.
From heavy duty mechanic to welding to electronic board repair. The breadth of your skill set is amazing.
Thru hole circuits are pretty easy actually, give it a try you'd be surprised

Ahhhh yes. Because your channel is so well known for being provocative and fringe....
TH-cam algorithm at its best. 😂
On the plus side maybe that means we'll get some more electronics troubleshooting vids. You did a few of those way back on your channel and I've always very much enjoyed them
All honesty I enjoy your content and always have. I REALLY love that you don't say like and subscribe. Almost every youtuber does and it's incredibly annoying.
The Bell Wes Mugsys coming for badmouthing gas
I stumbled across Gathering Dust and have enjoyed that content almost as much as I like to "watch Wes Work". I know everyone here is glad you don't charge for watching and making suggestions.
Great result Wes! 🖖👍👊😊
Gota love that wheel rim on that powcon cool machine.
The doggo look, as the plug is plugged in ;-D
Thanks for the video warren 👍👍👍👍👍
My Dad said the PowCon was an awesome welding power source and almost bullet proof.
I'm impressed with your soldering skills. I was ready to correct your technique! LOL
Those were pretty good welds for stick. You're a man of many talents Wes.
Great work getting all those machines running.
Next you'll have a space carved out for metal projects! You'll have a Fireball welding table and a plasma table. Its a ball!
Never cease to amaze with all you know Jack of all trades and master of some😮
1:35 Lol! Well done Wes!
