Vertical Welding Repair.

- Hey guys, Here is a repair that definitely gave me a quick refresher on vertical welding. This crane suffered from the columns cracking the welds because of the uneven terrain they have to go through on a daily basis. Kick back for a few moments and see if you pick up any pointers. Thanks for your support.

"Not going to get done by looking at it!" That's what my dad used to say to my siblings and me 50 yrs. ago, you brought back memories.
Oh my! How many time did I have to hear my Dear Old Dad say that to me with " Come on my Son, it won't get done by looking at it",...that was me having to help paint the house in the summer time. Now where do you think a 15 year old's mind is on days like this when his buddies were off playing somewhere else. :)
"how much gouging can you watch before it gets boring" I can confidently speak for 80+% Of your viewers when I say you couldn't post a long enough video my friend.
I second that,it’s always nice to watch the master work
How much is not enough when a master is explaining the job as he does it making it interesting
All of the gouging…..
@@mfreund15448 All of the time
Ic uncut ! I'd watch
Watching this man work has done nothing but help me with technique and learning new ways of doing things! The knowledge speaks for itself!
Isaac, great content today. I am 81 and enjoy watching a professionaL ply his skills. I think back when I used to work around some very good welders, but you are very skilled and do a great job explaining your procedures. So I just set here in Fredericksburg and watch you work. Thanks a lot
How could we not learn something from a master welder and fabricator who shows us Honor , Honesty and Integrity in everything you do sir. Thank You for showing us how to do it right. Prayers and love to you and your family. Love ya brother !!!
That is definitely the "mother of all vertical welds" I have ever seen. Great work as always!
There's few real masters of their trade that work, make the time to video, edit, explain, and isn't afraid to show their mistakes like IC Weld does for all of us. I'm a retired sheet metal worker. 30 years. I had my master's license for the last 20 years. I could never find the time to do everything it takes to make really good videos like IC Weld. Props to you sir❗️🙂
Were you a union sheet metal worker if so what local? Just curious .
Great to see the camera man back helping out, thanks for taking us along!
This isn’t the first time that you have been to this location, I remember another time you were working on a crane it looked like this thing.
Thank you Sir’s for sharing this video
My father was a rig welder,he was taught by my grandad in the Texas oil fields.(Grandpa had a shop in George West ) .
I was his helper on pipelines in the 70s -80s as that is what we did follow those pipelines .Dad taught me a lesson about welding magnetic pipe. That was to wrap the ground around the pipe when you strike an arc it will neutralize the field ,depending on which direction and which joint was magnetic .
Stick rod is All you use on a pipeline.
6010,7010,8010 ALL DOWN HILL AS PRODUCTION IS THE NAME OF THE GAME ...7DAYS A WEEK 12+ HRS A DAY..
NOW ON LAY BARGES THEY WOULD USE SUB ARC .
THAT IS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT THING ...
HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY NEW YEAR
GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES
Sheesh! That's a long weld out in the field. Man folks are hard on equipment. Thank goodness for 'em, too, because you'll always have stuff to do.
Well if this welding thing doesn’t work out, you could work as a surgeon with those precision hands! Outstanding work as usual.
Issac you are the best. Never get tired of watching your videos. Always interesting
Said it before, and I and others will say again. Always learn something from every video.
This is the best no nonsense and to the point channel out there !
Gets the job done … great team effort.
The different pieces of equipment You chose to show us is interesting Issac.
Thanks again and Best Wishes to You and Your Family !
*I C Weld* Bravo well done, thank-you sir for taking the time to bring us along. GOD Bless.
Always a pleasure to watch you work Isaac. Everyday is a school day
“It ain’t gonna get done by lookin at it!” Love that Isaac! 30’ of Flux core for Heavy Industrial use should shut up all the TH-cam welding “experts” that constantly dismiss Flux Core as only for hobbyists or non-structural welding applications.
your getting confused with self shielding wire, flux cored just refers to a centre fill, theres rutile, basic limestone flux or pure metal core variety also. most these still need gas. self shield uses mostly lot zinc, hence strong white fume. gas shieled are still the premium but you just cant use them reliably outside, hence self shield is better then.
this looks like a rutile sand based self shield, got the slight kind purple slag and nice smooth ripples
Yep, he's using Hobart Fabshield 21B, flux core, no shielding gas. Said so right in the video.
Another EPIC welding video. With all that weld plus the peening action of the needle scaler, probably better than new! Loved the overhead shots of the service truck, too!
I'm impressed with your channel. I heard CEE cutting edge engineering tell his channel that he watches your channel.
Well done ISAAC! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Really great to see your son working hand in hand with you!🙏🙏🙏
Happy New Year! 🎉⭐️🥂
Greetings from the oldest town in Texas, Nacogdoches and Happy New Year. Another great video of a true craftsman at work.
First! 👍👍👍
An IC Weld video is a great way to start the day before working in the shop.
Very neat prep work done on this equipment before the welding.
Well done Team ICW. That was a monumental repair of the type that I would normally expect Alistairc123 to be doing !! Hats off to the master also for sticking with the job to the end. If it was me, as soon as the rain started I would pass the torch to the apprentice and let him hone his skills while I sat in the warm, dry truck eating lunch and listening to some relaxing music 😁
Well i think it would not matter if it was 5ft or 50 ft watching a man with your skills do this job is more a pleasure than a chore you may find it surprising but im gonna hazard a guess more people have learnt how you do things by watching rather than being told or class room taught . Yes the theory is great but it cant beat watching a hands on job .. keep on posting Isaac ill always watch . Many thanks from the uk
your videos are never boring
Happy New Year to everyone. And you are definitely never boring. It's great to see you working with your son. He has become a good welder himself and an asset to your business. Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming in 2025.
From the gouging rods to the umbrella, everything professional and pretested. That was a physically demanding job. Thanks for letting us look over your shoulder again. Best wishes for the new year to you, your son and the rest of your family. Greetings from Germany.
“They don’t come with those marks “😂😂
Man twenty feet of vertical gouging and welding would suck, then again it could have been all up hand. yet you did it like the professional you are.
That was one long gouge and weld. Amazing how you show us how just clamping and welding doesn't get the job done. Thanks for the vid. I never think the gouging gets boring!
When you have that amount of equipment and you depend on others' inspections you have things like that. It's call the price of doing business. You find the problem you fix the problem and go on about you day.
Nice fix, sir.
If everything was maintained perfectly, you’d have a lot less work, and as I fully enjoy your work and videos, I’m happy you can post these videos, and kinda thank the companies that don’t maintain their equipment quite as well as they should
Really good looking outcome. Thank you for sharing.
Top notch preparation and welding !!!! Happy new year...From the UK
Great learning experience video .This kind of field training is top notch. Was going to ask about the de magnetism until answer found in comments.
It is always fun welding vertical, or overhead in a man basket with a helper dancing a jig behind you.
Love some Arc-Air gouging! My favorite wrench while deconstructing railcars. Hucks, bolts, rivets, and weld stand no chance! Keep up the great videos!
Big improvement. I got a peener like yours and it makes things look better, I hope they are stronger.
That is a lot of prep work and welding. Awesome vid.
The clouds worked out nicely. Thanks for the videos.
Never hurts to get a little vertical welding practice in now and then, but that's taking it to the next level! 😀👍
Happy new years guys 🎉 thanks for sharing, lots of love to you and yours
Big job! Way to get that repair done! Thank you for narrating what you were doing along the way of repairing the equipment. 👍🏼
I love your umbrellas
This would be a heck of a good way to learn to weld uphill lol thats a lot of vertical gap to glue back together.
great share thanks to you both.
Love your set up. Very professional.👍👍
Thank you IC for another good video and happy new year!
man, this takes me back to my days welding structural, minus the MIG. We always ran stick off the old Lincoln diesels. they took a second to spool up, unlike the Bobcat! I miss welding every day
Great work as always. And you approached it exactly how I would have.
Always a good job done, guys. Thanks for the video
That looks like a Texas sized batch plant off in the distance by the looks of all the cement silos. A lot of gouging. But on the bright side, if for some reason your vertical up practice was lagging behind, you're up to speed now brother!
You get all the good jobs, plus you have a needle gun man....I am so jealous 🤣👍👌💪🔥🔥 Those cranes are probably at least 30 years old. At least any I have encountered were and they were beat up too. They live a hard life. Well done my friend
Thank you for the video !!! And there is no such thing as to much Air Arcing !! I enjoy every step of the process ....you do fantastic work !!! 👍👍👍 Can't wait for the next video !!
Glad to see that PPE. Falling off a lift can happen in a few seconds and far too many people do not respect that fact.
longest uphill weld I have seen to date.
Very nice job. Always enjoy watching a welder do these kind of jobs. Working in the elements, long vertical passes reminds me how difficult maintenance welding is compared to production welding. Keep up the good work.
Incredible work, wow, nicely done.
Top job Issac . Never a dull moment, job , with you for certain . Enjoy . Your dry climate . Tis wet here in the uk 🤦♂️
That was a cool video. You guys got some excellent footage of the gouging.
The "whah-bulance" line had me laughing 😂. Great job Isaac (and son) , as always you made a difficult job look easy! Happy New Year brother, be safe!
Thank you for sharing, always a pleasure watch your project, i learn a lot, have a happy day 👍👍👍👍
Lovely job. Thank you.
Definitely got your practice on vertical welding on that job 😱
Nice job Isaac
Greg from northern Michigan. Good time to charge by the inch !
Every time I see you post a video I say to myself "this is the video I will get sick of watching him gouge" and every time it's not. Keep trying, maybe it will be the next one. I'll be sure to watch it.
I'm surprised there's no struts or bracing. Absolutely wild. This machine works great, in the perfectly flat world it was designed for. The kind of world with no friction, no air resistance and spherical cows. 😅
You speak as though that machine rolled out of the factory yesterday...
@@ShainAndrews That thing was built way after the Eiffel tower, so the engineering principles of steel structures were well-known by that point. It's old, not ancient.
Another great job, file under “long welds” . Thanks for the video. Happy New Year to you and your family.
I love that with the dark filter. 🎉
WHAAAA-BULANCE!!! Thanks for your videos. Keep them coming
Great video ! Thanks for taking the time and trouble to post.
Happy New Year from BC Canada
Another job excellently done thanks for sharing
Some straight up welding for sure❤
Really good job, and great video. Thanks!
Making arcs and causing sparks! I hope you have a prosperous new year! 👍✝️🇺🇲
All the best in the new year
very nice work, thanks for the video and lesson
You on the road again! I hope there’s good money in it.
Great video excellent camera shots
Hey! Love watching this channel.
I’m a little surprised that you did not preheat or maintain heat on this. I feel like it would have been a benefit using a weed burner to get started. Maybe I’m wrong.
Great work and love the videos!
The material was thin enough to not need preheat. I usually dont preheat anything under 1/2". That plus welding vertically is usually a slower process. It's slow enough to build up heat as it goes.
@
I see. Makes sense!
Love the videos!
Very good repair to keep this iron producing. Looks like the original fabrication was wanting and, yeah, it's in rough work. Ideal conditions seldom exist in the real world. That's why you have a business. You keep them going. When is Junior going to start welding on the job?
Once I started flux-core, everything else went by the wayside. It's expensive wire but it works so well outside and on old iron. Last summer, a wildfire claimed my beloved Bobcat, so I think my heavy welding days are over. Still have my wire feeds and plasma but torches and welder are all gone. Happy New Year to all with hopes of a healthy and prosperous new year. dave
At least it was all in a wide open area to get at though 😎👍 self shielding wire is by far faster than using SMAW, made the right choice there. Too bad you couldnt have this in a shop to use dual shield FCAW. Oh well! You made it happen as per usual, thanks for sharing and letting us be apart of it. Happy New Year to you and your family. Keep the vids coming!
What a wonderful and educational video, Mr Isaac.
Happy New Year.
Holy lord liftin thats a hell of a job easy money right there !
another great job done i enjoy watching your videos
Nice to see more of your vids!
Thanks for the video, happy new year.
I've welded the same spot numerous times at our company. They'll pay us oodles amount of OT to fix them but won't buy a new one lmao. Three journeyman ironworkers making $85hr. Normally about a 12 hour job as they don't open up until winter time hits. Then we have to defrost the crane and get S**T moved around in our shop to get the crane inside. We make concrete bridge girders. We have 8 cranes on site. This is one of the biggest issue with the cranes. Work at Knife River
Always interesting Issac !
Thank you for your time.
Mi-jack travel lift. Have a few where I work and have been driving them for 24 years. Caused by the carne crab walking and twisting the crane do to poor yard maintenance especially when maxed out on lifting capacity
I thought those bucket gouges were an option from the factory 😂. Pro job as usual.
Happy New Year!
Wishing you and your family a very great New Year , Issac….cheers from Orlando, Paul
Nice going guys, happy new year
I had a very similar job recently and the piece was magnetized and maybe energized a bit. Couldn’t figure it out. It was spitting the puddle back out at me like blowing out a candle. Bad day in welding history.
Good video, Issac.
