Your videos make me realize two things: 1) Uncovered skin and uncamouflaged weapons, gear and boots really make you stand out. 2) The camouflage pattern itself doesn't matter that much. This 71 year old pattern is almost as good as recent patterns like Multicam. At normal combat distances (50+ meters), one is as good as almost any other. Whereas a military would have to pay royalties for something like Multicam, older patterns like the one in this video are probably off-patent by now and free for anyone to copy.

Yeah, if only they were technologically fifteen years ahead of schedule, then they could've started the war with rockets and nukes. Or if you went back in time and micromanaged everything with hindsight... In all seriousness, Maybe the Germans could've won if the British and French didn't declare war for Poland, but that's like half the war off the table. If they were only warring with Soviets on that one front, the Italians would've joined in when they were ready, and the Fins and other minor axis supporters might've gotten more serious in helping the germans out.

Love hunting in my German camo. I use an SS oak A pattern type II smock and dot44 trousers. Since they're meant to be worn over the wool uniform I can layer my cloths and not worry as much about color.

9:52 Was the best, even that close the Dot 44 was superbly effective, the Germans were the masters at camouflage during WW2 and it into an art form.Splinter A&B,Tan and Water, Oakleaf & Palm Tree no name but a few were also equally as effective as Dot 44 in their respective theatres of war.
Very impressive. When still I had a hard time finding you, or failed completely. At first I was thinking the coloration wasn't quite right for this terrain, but as the video went on, it worked incredibly well against the less vivid greens and earth tones. Great video as always and cool K98k! Just picked up a Swedish M38 and eventually hope to pick up a German variant
One more thing, if you did more cammoflage effectiveness videos. With different color rucksacks, like MARPAT Woodland, with a Multicam rucksack. Or vise versa or any patterns that blend well really. Your the only guy on TH-cam effectively doing these videos. So I'd love to see you blending different cammoflage patterns. Maybe not just with rucksacks. Maybe use different Tops and bottoms to? In my opinion this is the best camaflarge pattern ever made its far superior to anything you can get today and it works even better in an Autumnal setting someone should make it in a more modern cut uniform
Glocknade Clipazine Actually the Wehrmacht's splintertan is a very, VERY good pattern. It is being used in Ukraine by some groups now, it's just the right pattern and color for both urban and forest. Would like to see Brent trying em :)
Harbard Just in like a BDU format or old style re-enactor stuff? I have a splinter padded uniform that I wear out skiing with a feldgrau m43. I've actually never seen an effectiveness test of it, but it is very aesthetically pleasing to the eye. I heard that they presented the East German helmet design to Hitler in '44 and he just said no, it looks stupid, Nazis had some great style you have to give them that.

As a WWII reenactor who does Russian and occasionally partisan, DOT44 has killed me more than any of the other German patterns. If the DOT wearer is not moving he often becomes invisible, even if standing in the open against a suitable background. On the other side, Soviet WWII leaf pattern can be just a deadly as many of my German opponents have discovered.
There is a story about when the West German Army was created. The former enemies are talking about how to create it. Supposedly the one thing that the Germans would not budge on was their camouflage.

That "Erbsentarn" Pattern was... lets say... the Grandfather of today's german Flecktarn - which is pretty obvious to see. I remember the day - I think it was in 1989 - when the German Ministry of Defence showed the new Uniforms to the public on TV for the first time. I called a friend of mine and said... "watch out, the SS is back...!" But what ist not very well know, that the world wide famous German Designer Wolfgang Joop was responsible for the Cut of the Fflecktarn-Uniforms. Hi Brent, thank you very much for posting this video! I didn't see this video until now and it confirmed to me how wonderfully effective the pattern then and still is. I think I've said this before but I have never seen this pattern tested by anyone but only seen pictures. I think what makes this pattern so effective are three things: 1. The dominate color is brown and light brown that matches the ground if on prone and dry twigs and leaves if in kneeling position. Woodland pattern's success was due to generous use of brown, light brown, and black but it would of course be less effective on the ground but performs far better in woodland environment than Dot-44. Both patterns uses green sparingly (somewhat for Woodland pattern). 2. The tightness of the pattern matching clutter and clusters of twigs, leaves as well as the ground....maybe too tightly while the the Marine P42 seemed perfectly proportional to. 3. And it seemed to be the first pattern to transition from one color portion to another... something that Multicam does extremely well. However it is of course not the best pattern because it uses dots which the eye can catch more easily as you know making P42 a bit more superior.

Question for you - do you have a favorite source or two for surplus or good repro historical camo? Probably would have been more accurate to have a Sturmgewehr or even a G43. I noticed that the canteen lid reflects quite a bit of light. The SS even had a mask with that camo to cover the face. This is quite an interesting Camouflage. I would like to see how well the reversible Oak B pattern works.

Sir A very interesting couple camo patterns have popped out of our friends in Ukraine. I think you should check out P1G-TAC and their "Zhaba/Jaba" camouflages. They have a bright green camo for heavily foliated environments and a yellow/tan camo for prairie and arid environments. Very interesting stuff and made in excellently cut, modern uniforms. P.S. Great videos as always.
At distance the small details totally vanish (as with any other intricate pattern). I think the most effective camo is the modern German "Fleckentarn B" that uses larger areas and higher contrast.
I think it took many decades for camo designers to realise this. Testing Auscam (DPCU) in the 1990's, it was discovered after much investment that it really didn't work that much better than the jungle greens the Australian Army already had (but wanted to replace), especially after a day or so out on manoeuvres. The second version "Midpoint DPCU" has the same component shapes, just spread out a bit more to make them more contrasting to the base colour and it apparently works much better.

Good Impression Brent, I know you're probably not a reenactor of this period, but low boots with gaiters would have been a bit more true to the time. Like I say, I know this is just an effectiveness video and you're not fully kitted out in period correct gear. Good stuff though. Have you seen the post war Austrian dot camo? I saw some effectiveness pics and damn it works well. I'm surprised it isn't as common in new clothing formats.
I'm from California, and when I spent time in Oklahoma and then Arkansas at night, I was amazed at the racket those bugs can make. We don't have those bugs where I'm from, at least my part of CA. (Guess we can't have too many weapons either here in CA...) I watched another video about SS camo and man I wouldn't want to have been walking through a late WWII forest...seems like it largely would've been a crap shoot if you got hit or not since it seems like you can't see the camo'd enemy beforehand very well. Definitely wouldn't have wanted to get shot let alone died in those final days.

I'd first seen mottled paint on WW1 German aircraft, and then the uniforms later in WWII, to even the present. Effective too in nature, from leopards & cheetahs . Good use of terrain, until You move,
Many of those older German patterns are very effective the Russian army is even using some modified German designs albeit on a limited basis. I even looked into some of the repro stuff myself but the price stopped me. BTW you have a ridiculous selection of camo and weapons. Keep it up
That forest isn't that bad as a stand in for the European theatre, obviously more sunny, but a lot of the foliage looks to be similar to lightly wooded areas of west Europe, though perhaps not closer to the Black Forest part of Germany.
It is the predecessor of the actual German Flecktarn and it least as effectice. I like the German BW gear because you can buy it at reasonable prices and it is very, very durable. Don't get cheated with bad chinese copies of it. However, some copies are not that bad either.
Me: finding Waldo will be easy, like he weres a bright red and whitee shirt. Waldo: switches sides to the Germans. Me: FUCK now I have burn down mother nature herself to find him.
from this video you can clearly notice effectiveness of face paint just pick mud and rub it to face and if not wearing gloves to hands too so you are less visible
Awsome video as always. I have a question though: Is the german WWII Dot Camouflage you're wearing a reproduction or is it an actual uniform used by the germans? If yes, how did you find something this rare?
Just as a note for historically accuracy. Most camo was randomly issued and it was extremely uncommon to find a man dressed heat-to-toe in any of the camos of the Heer or SS.
What unit are you trying to represent here. Because I know the 12th SS mainly used this camo but you don't seem to have any insignia on your tunic. I know the dot 44 tunic doesn't usually get much insignia but they sometimes wore the bolts and almost always the eagle on their sleeve
you should place yourself closer to the camera. you are usually so far out. Anyone at that distance wouldnt be seen. you should stand against some brush or bushes too so we can see the effect of the camo. I think the flecktarn is best thus far.
+James Corless This is 12 minutes of exposure at close ranges and further ranges, plus I leave the movement phase out of the initial position so that you guys can see how the pattern looks on the move. I even take monetary pauses on the movement out, I think there is plenty here for someone to get a pretty good idea on what this pattern looks like in this environment.
Is it still historically accurate though that jackboots were still used along with the camo uniform or is it supposed to be the low boots with gaiters?

The camo pattern was never issued to fallschrimjager officially, there was a few here and there issued. But fallschrimjager used a different camo pattern and they also didn't use the standard pattern of uniform which that is.

This video made me realize that it does not matter what kind of camouflage you are wearing if you hide behind a tree nobody is going to see you.
I just got my hands on a German WWII 44 Dot Camo uniform and also a reversible Platenenmuster blouse. Is amazing how good they are!

The Russians have actually revived many of these older German WWII patterns and have some modern day uniform cuts in them.
By far my favourite Camo pattern! Kinda hard to paint on miniatures though... It's cool to see the camo in action, good stuff.
You ought to try out Splittertarn also. I think that camo pattern is just sexy. Well, I think that about nearly all the German camo patterns really.

The Social Regressive Germans have also been pioneers of camouflage development.
I use this pattern in WW2 reenacting, the Gi's walk right past me Everytime.

the uniform seems to change color with the surroundings. 4:15 the top part actually looks like the same color as the tree, and at 8:12 it looks green.

I watched another video about SS camo and man I wouldn't want to have been walking through a late WWII forest...seems like it largely would've been a crap shoot if you got hit or not since it seems like you can't see the camo'd enemy beforehand very well. Definitely wouldn't have wanted to get shot let alone died in those final days.

I'd first seen mottled paint on WW1 German aircraft, and then the uniforms later in WWII, to even the present. Effective too in nature, from leopards & cheetahs . Good use of terrain, until You move,
Many of those older German patterns are very effective the Russian army is even using some modified German designs albeit on a limited basis. I even looked into some of the repro stuff myself but the price stopped me. BTW you have a ridiculous selection of camo and weapons. Keep it up

That forest isn't that bad as a stand in for the European theatre, obviously more sunny, but a lot of the foliage looks to be similar to lightly wooded areas of west Europe, though perhaps not closer to the Black Forest part of Germany.

theunwitness Those are actually Russian Jack boots. I picked them up from Trident military some years ago.
It is the predecessor of the actual German Flecktarn and it least as effectice. I like the German BW gear because you can buy it at reasonable prices and it is very, very durable. Don't get cheated with bad chinese copies of it. However, some copies are not that bad either.
Have you considered trying German Splinter camo, just for fun? It's not too hard to come by. It is also from WWII era.

from this video you can clearly notice effectiveness of face paint just pick mud and rub it to face and if not wearing gloves to hands too so you are less visible
also if you sit in bush your hand and face will shine more than branches etc whout it

Just as a note for historically accuracy. Most camo was randomly issued and it was extremely uncommon to find a man dressed heat-to-toe in any of the camos of the Heer or SS.

I recall that it was issued completely at random. A helmet cover here, pants there, field jacket here, smock there.

What unit are you trying to represent here. Because I know the 12th SS mainly used this camo but you don't seem to have any insignia on your tunic. I know the dot 44 tunic doesn't usually get much insignia but they sometimes wore the bolts and almost always the eagle on their sleeve

you should place yourself closer to the camera. you are usually so far out. Anyone at that distance wouldnt be seen. you should stand against some brush or bushes too so we can see the effect of the camo. I think the flecktarn is best thus far.
+James Corless This is 12 minutes of exposure at close ranges and further ranges, plus I leave the movement phase out of the initial position so that you guys can see how the pattern looks on the move. I even take monetary pauses on the movement out, I think there is plenty here for someone to get a pretty good idea on what this pattern looks like in this environment.
Is it still historically accurate though that jackboots were still used along with the camo uniform or is it supposed to be the low boots with gaiters?

Looks like a predecessor to Flecktarn. I think that pattern was mostly issued to paratroopers.
The camo pattern was never issued to fallschrimjager officially, there was a few here and there issued. But fallschrimjager used a different camo pattern and they also didn't use the standard pattern of uniform which that is.
