  • Difficult first start after deep storage, 1944 T-34-85. Will the monster 38 litre V12 diesel roar into life ? make sure you watch the field test video as we have full interior footage showing the racks full of shells and the machine guns still in the turret. Please subscribe as I have more tank videos on the way, you can also see this tank in action at the Capel Military Show.

    It was awesome to hear the engine catch and come to life. The more it was run the smoother and tighter it sounded. I'm no expert but to my ears that sounded great!

      I'm not sure that's correct Steve. T-34's were legendary for their Reliability like a Sherman. That V-12 was so reliable they also put them in the T-72 Decades later. You sure you're thinking of the T-34?

    • @ManDownUnder2
      @ManDownUnder2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Supes Me that is a myth my good man yes it could of been reliable but they got 12 year olds to build the engine and im not joking, another problem was the bad suspension and the super human strength needed to change gears it only 15kph instead of 25kph some tanks even carried a spare transmission it was a major flop oh and little room inside very cramped

      Man Down Under The Soviets actually purposefully reduced LT reliability and longevity in order to cut production costs and reduce man hours required per unit of output. They actually did much better at this than the capitalist Germans and in some cases matched the mass production oriented Americans. They correctly reasoned that it made no sense to put 10,000 hour bearings in an engine that was in a tank with an expected lifespan under 1,000 hours. So they used bushings and very few tanks survived long enough to wear them out anyway. If they did well you got your money’s worth get a new one and go on with winning the war. The German Tiger was a far superior tank but was in excess of 1 million man hours to produce (they even bragged about this in the manual) vs only maybe a few thousand man hours for a T34.

    It’s beautiful, almost surreal, to see this piece of machinery from almost a century ago roar back to life and move around on its own power.
    Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but that thick white smoke at the beginning indicates that the engine was coated in protective oil before going into storage. That could explain why the engine is such pristine condition after all these decades.

      Yep! I'm in 70s & when 4 recall Gramps modifying an accordion kid's over-the-head back brace, to suspend 1 of his Thompsons teachin' me to shoot it w/100 shots in drum at tire bouncing down hill on full auto. Other gangsters came out to farm for fall shoot with Gramps arm in sling telling boys farmin' is dangerous! They all whined like little biotches, so Gramps offered them chance to win some of their money back against me just 4 yr old kid, but would need 20:1 odds. Maury The Mole said "BS Boss...we'll just give you 10:1 odds...ain't that right boys???" Gramps agreed, they all shot first at the tire w/cardboard square inside as had seniority. Maury The Murderer hit 22 times, Ernie The Eraser hit 35 times, and rest of crew not so pretty good. I had least seniority shooting last with 69 hits out of 100. Boys wanted to kill Gramps for screwin' 'em, but each glanced at his Luger Broomhandle Auto and finally agreed it was "Nice Shooting Boss!!" They coughed up the $2,850, Gramps added $150 to it, and Monday morning bought small house w/basement for last gang member finally getting out of prison at SPSM in Jackson. Gramps also got him job as Night Custodian at High School meeting requirements for release. And as for Gramp's Thompson, it was the sound of WW2 all over again, AND IT SOUNDED VERY IMPRESSIVE FROM WHERE i WAS STANDING!!

      The Korean War also. The North Korean and Chinese armies were given a bunch of T-34/85s by Stalin to fight South Korea and the US-led UN Coalition. It's very possible my own great uncle (a US Army infantryman) may have found himself across the battlefield from some of these (maybe even on the receiving end of their shells). That 1950s war was a strange combination of World War II, World War I and modern warfare all rolled into one chaotic brawl.
